My little dog (a teacup poodle) lived for almost 18 years. She went everywhere with me. I work construction so she rode in my Truck . It was funny she would not let anyone near the truck and tried to nip and barked and growled almost like she knew it was mine and her truck. She followed me around concourse of malls right at my heel without a leash, she also rode my Harley with me tucked into my vest with a little hat and glasses not moving a muscle as we rode. There are probably pictures floating out there on the net. It was the happiest time of my life. The saddest day was the day she died. I am a big strong man and i cried like a little baby for weeks . Tears still flow when i think of her . She loved the beach so she is buried there.
That's awesome man! What a privilege to be blessed with such a companion. I am 2 years in a relationship with a very similar dog. Her name is Daisy, she is a 120lbs German Shepherd.
I got my first dog at age 40 and decided that I wasted 40 years of my life living my lonely dog less life. Now we are getting a second pup. Best days of our life are filled with dogs.
I can't imagine not having a dog until the age of 40! So glad you took the leap and decided to share your life with dogs. Dogs bring so much love and joy to my life EVERY day. 🐶💕
Had a stroke and a brain aneurism followed by brain surgery. My dog never left my side. Two years later my dog suddenly starts giving me nonstop kisses and never leaves my side. Three days of this and I have another stroke. Needless to say he’s now my most valued caregiver! Better than any specialist I’ve seen!
It's a blessing to have them as a care companion. My neurologist insisted I get a dog to help me with my epilepsy and she has been amazing. She is so in tune with my stress emotions which helps me stay calm and avoid seizures. Amazing caregivers they are!!!!
This story made my day - So cool! Dogs are amazing! We’re barely scratching the surface of how much emotional intelligence they have . I loved this guys book!
There is something to that for sure. My dog seems to know a few minutes before my wife coughs at night (he jumps off the bed and sure enough 30 second later she will cough when asleep). There is something they are picking up on that humans can't otherwise detect.
They own your heart. It took me a couple years after my last girl died - at 17 yrs - before I could get another, but Isabella (new girl) is my bff now.

Yes, same with our 8 year-old lab. It has changed my outlook on life, how very, very few people actually mean anything. Humans are mostly a waste of space.
redcaddiedaddie they do get embarrassed though, when I catch my pit bull eating off the table or something he knows he shouldn’t do, he looks down and won’t give eye contact lol
@@VeganWitch111 they probably became invasive because of people abandoning them. The abandoned dogs keep breeding and it gets out of hand. It starts with people breeding too many dogs and adopting dogs they can't take care of
Dogs are much better than most people as a friend and a family. Most humans give you "human migraine" dogs give you love and loyalty. I always tell people "I love dogs more than most people" 💚
I love dogs. I feel so sad when people say, " we lost our dog, we cant replace her. No more dogs for us". You are NOT "replacing" a dog companion, you are giving another dog a chance. A chance of a life. As my first dog got older, I got her a dog companion. She taught the puppy so much. How to behave in the house, on the lead, out at Cafes !! Second dog has now taught my third. Dogs love to Sleep.
So true, we have a much longer life cycle than dogs. My 16 yr. old dog recently died - she lived a quality, full, long beautiful life - she enriched & filled our life with love & I’m sure vice versa .. thing is SHE lived a FULL, LONG life … we are sad she’s gone but that’s normal grief. Giving another dog or dogs a full life is a gift we give ourselves AND them.
When American Sign Language was the primary language used in my home, my dog (who had only known spoken language before) picked up the meanings of several signs on his own (walk, car, hungry and eat). When I realized he had done this, I taught him quite a few other signs. He learned to respond to the sign only version of all of the commands he already knew, and he continued to demonstrate that he understood a great deal of signed communication.
@@madamdardis I don't let my dog do the doggy stare while I'm eating. She knows so she positions herself behind chairs and couches and out of the corner of my eye I can see her slowly peeking out. When I turn my head to look at her she tucks back in. This goes on a few times every meal 😂 But after every meal, I whistle and she comes out and she gets a few scraps. It's all about routine.
My Dad had a heart attack and when he came home from the hospital, our dog, Sport, stayed in the bedroom with him with his head on my Dad's chest everyday for over a month while my Dad was on bedrest. That is love.
Dogs are a blessing. I had open heart surgery and our dog insisted on staying near me all the way through my first month or so of recovery. He’s a terrific dog, and my wife and I are very lucky to have him.
Dogs have 'co evolved' with us for over 60 000 years. They spend all their time observing our behaviour, anticipating our actions; they know us better than we know ourselves. Every dog I have had the privilege to give a home to have been the best friends, most generous companions and the most empathetic souls I have ever encountered. Dogs show us how to truly love another and how to live a good life.
Wow .. I share your sentiments. You have said it all so well.. I am aging and struggling with post cancer damage. My dog who is 11… has merged with me and we are now the same age. I had worried about me , keeping up with him.. but he’s is slowing down , 85# who I could never train the pulling side of this part pittie guy, and it’s hard watching him sleep more but Mama needs rest too. He came to me right after the passing of my 14.5 year old dog.. they got together at the Humane Society and even though my new best friend was behind a door that opened daily and blocked him to untrained minds n ears.. lol.. my 2 guys who’s consciousness is higher than most people I know.. they both spoke to me.. no words but did. My now best friend has been my 4th Protector of the Universe. This is the their position in the world and my life! There's a discussion in the Talmud about whether or not animals have souls. Dogs maybe yes--because if they misbehave, they are ashamed and ask forgiveness. Food for thought.
When my Mammy passed away 3 years ago, my German Shepherd Charlie used to drop white socks at my feet, I guess she thought that they were tissues. Absolutely almost broke me, when the time came last October to put her to sleep. I still cry often and still call out for her to come with me for walkies. She was my best friend and my soulmate I believe. Super intelligent dog. Miss you my Charlie 💓

@@fairwitness7473 Sometimes they leave us on their own. I rescued my girl from a abusive home. In a very short time, she trusted me and followed me around. Then after many years my little girl was deteriorating, but kept eating and and doing well. Then her health took a bad turn and I said OK I have to make that difficult decision. That night when she was sitting with me she looked at me and made a soft sound I picked her up and she died in my arms. I guess she returned the favor of saving her, for I don't know how I could have made that horrible decision.
I miss my Maggie too. I have 2 others but she was extra special. I adopted a 3rd dog replacing Maggie just 2 weeks after she went to heaven. Very sorry for your loss. Please know that shelters are currently overflowing with dogs being dumped off. Sometimes opening our heart again is the best way to heal and honor our lost ones. Hope you find joy again.
We love our friends & family, spouses & children of course, with our entire soul & being. However, our dogs, our cats, hamster, fish whatever are in their own category of love. It’s all encompassing, knowing that they will love us to their last breath. Can’t get that from family! Animals understand, us by their very design, it’s innate. From the tilted head to the hand nudge to pet them to the let’s go out & play, to the I’m here to care for you service dog. They truly are gifts from God & truly love us to their dying day. I’ve had to put several dogs & cats down. I’ve lost my dear parents & sister. I know they are well & happy in Heaven being cared for by God. But, when my animals passed, I swear my tears were going to turn to blood my sorrow was so great & all encompassing. We learn to live with loss, it’s all part of life, but no matter human or animal, the loss is real, & a hole is left in our hearts. I still miss my childhood dog who was taken away from me at 11. I am hopeful that when I die, I will see my loved ones again, & pray more to see my animals. I hope I’m right. ❤️🐾🐾
I lost my baby girl at nearly age 16. She was a Rottweiler and husky mix. This cat lover cried for days after she died. I nursed her in the last days of her life when she couldn't get up anymore, gave her water. She didn't want to eat anymore. It broke my heart to see her go and would give anything to see her again, my baby girl Kita.
I know that the joy and happiness a dog gives you is counterbalanced by the pain of there loss. This is what love is like. I cried for my dog when I lost him but I found another dog is the best cure for this. I loved.all my.dogs and dream of them and hope to see them again.

My two dogs are the sole reason I am still alive today. They represent all my hope and faith for life. They supply the necessary strength to keep going and the trust that god won’t leave me alone and end it all.
I feel the same way. I feel they are counting on me for everything . Even protection. It’s the same way I felt when my child was little. I had him to keep me going everyday. Thanks for sharing.🐞
Without describing the method (for obvious reasons), here's how my dog prevented a dark time becoming my end. My puppy had free access out my back door. She was a few months old. I'd decided to depart life. In the final act, she came in and put her head on my knee. That recognition of my pain acted as a circuit breaker. I stopped and re-evaluated things. That was 22 years ago. Eva became riddled with cancer at 13 and I had her put down at the suggestion of the vet. Her cancer was throughout her body and it would have been a painful ending I couldn't allow. Dogs are amazing.
I am so, so sorry for your loss. I have been there. A loss of a dog is so overwhelmingly heart breaking. It really catches me off guard every time I lose on,. I just can't believe how much I love my dogs,. But I do. Dogs are so much more than pets. Even more than family for that matter.
Looks like you left this comment a year ago which was when I had to put my doggy down...she was 17 years old. I’ve lost quite a few people and known my fair share of suffering but this was maybe the single most heart breaking experience of my life. Wow, I have been blessed....... I got my dog from an animal shelter and trained him to be my service dog. I was injured in Iraq was give a Prescription for a service dog. I did get help from another veteran in understanding and direction for training my dog. He was already 5 when I started his training. He went from trining to yank my arm off to now walking without a lead at the grocery store. It amazes other people, but it amazes me more!
I Totally respect what you have done to bring the best out of your dog-firend! I advocate that there are no "bad" dogs - there are screwed owners. Not every body shall be allowed to train dogs. You - please, get your hands on as many dogs as possible to bring the best of them - did you consider helping in a near-by dog shelter?
I have a similar story with my dog and I've thought about this a lot. I hypothesize people who can train their own service dogs will have a much higher rate of success. Canine Companions has huge flaws in their model, despite be such a prolific organization. One of the biggest issues being that Puppy Raisers get to keep their puppy if it flunks out of the program. I've heard of Puppy Raisers intentionally sabotaging their success because they don't want to let go. On top of that, you can go in and get the exact dog you need from a rescue. You can even re-home and retry if it doesn't work out, and no one would hate you. But, that's a big factor for success versus trying to breed your perfect puppy, which is exactly what CCI does. And, they need exceptionally perfect puppies since the dogs will be going to homes where the handler probably couldn't have trained their own dog. They need their dogs to be absolutely bomb proof. On a side note, I hope your actually wheres a lead in the store. Otherwise, it would be breaking the law. But, good job. :)
Peter: It's great training your own dog. I have been stuck in bed for some time. We got a great German Shepard. I started out simply teaching her the names of things and to push, pull and hand it to me. We did four training sessions a day for 15 mins per session. I would put 3 items on the bed, then go through push the phone, hand me the cup etc. Once she got the names of things down, we would add new items. After a while she started bringing me things & setting them down in the training area and then getting in position. lol She was asking to be trained. Anyways, we started putting things around the house, out of the training area and I would say "hand me the phone" or whatever. It took her a little while to understand what we were doing but it's like it just clicked in her mind. "Oh, you want me to find things and bring them to you" As soon as she understood, she would bring anything she knew the name of. She now understands I can't get up and get things and that is her job. Unfortunately, when she "got it" she started guarding my stuff. She doesn't want anyone taking anything away from my bed or my table. lol We are working on that. Anyways, I think, when you train them yourself, they understand more, you get that bond. Our dog understands when anyone says "hand me the phone or hand me a towel" but she will not do it for them if they don't have a treat. It's hilarious. If someone else asks her, she will get the item & stand there holding it just out of their reach & she won't give it to them until they trade it for a treat. When I ask her to hand me the phone, she grabs it and gives it to me. I do give her reinforcement, a "good girl", a quick pet and an occasional food reward but she always gives me whatever item I ask for. She understands that I need the help. If someone else does the training, they do things only because they were trained. I think a smart dog would come to understand but, if you train yourself, you know they understand & you get a closer bond.

I think they have their little reaction to negative behaviors of humans too. And they suffer a lot when poorly or badly treated. At the same time their happiness is hughe when treated with respect and dignity. Yes they have similar emotions to us. My mini thoughts on this. I think we will need a lot of time to really start to understand them well. Difficult task as they have other tools than humans like highly developped smell, etc... but i love this studies, i love dogs, and also all animals really.

God placed dogs with us so the we could learn from them .. Dogs love unconditionally . Something humans have not yet been able to learn .. Dogs have infinite patience, they are perfect teachers.
What imaginary dogs do you know? Dogs love unconditionally? Ha ha ha. My parents have a German Shepherd that chose them over the original people that got the dog. My mom has a Chihuahua that *loves* whomever has food treats. This dog has no loyalty, lol. Infinite patience doesn't exist when the dog wants food like now, now, now. How about *now*, lol! Yeah they're perfect teachers. Domestic dogs teach people to take care of everything so the dog can live a blissfully spoiled life. It's their cuteness. I fall for it every time.
@@raymurphy2182 ...Your trying to teach grossly flawed humans about bigger picture truths? I do this all the time, but it's way over most of their heads. Dogs can't read or talk, but have superior humane characteristics than dummied down humans. If a person with their humane thinking still in tact, takes time interacting with just one dog, that dog acts out many of the wisest teachings that are in a bible. (By the way, I stopped going to man made church over forty years ago.) Sadly, simple minded people won't "see" it due to poor comprehension. But by society's lowered standards, these people are considered to have good enough comprehension skills. What a joke that is! Our corrupt leaders actually don't allow many experts freedom of speech. The whole issue of "no proof" of a God has been tampered with, just like so many other truths. The dummying down of society is so obvious to me in many detailed ways I learned how to learn about. Our leaders benefit greatly by using many clever tactics that work on the public to keep the public fearing "the end". This weakens them in many critical ways. They become much easier to mold and much quicker to conform with the stupidest teachings. Reality is much simpler to learn, if you first learned to not be dumbed down by our vast amount of fake and corrupt so called "experts". The things I actually proved wrong against massive odds don't surprise me. I learned to analyze everything on my own decades ago. It was a very time consuming and slow but steady process to wisdom that few people still only come close to matching my problem solving ability. I wasn't born with proven high levels of intelligence. I learned to not trust any typically highly accepted "truths". But that meant I had to prove my untaught ways of analysis credible, which I have done over and over. Many of my longshot odds, unpopular views from over twenty years have turned out to be correct. But guess what? I still can't tell people to verify by googling articles. As always, the wisest realities are not allowed in the media. Most bits and pieces that need to be connected are right out in public in the business world, but they are so hard to even see ....then connect. Our wealthiest business leaders know exactly what I'm talking about. They are never going to talk about this either.
I've had dogs all my life, even when I traveled internationally. I love my dogs deeply. I am content with their companionship and love. They are everything that humans cannot understand and that is: unconditional love and undying loyalty. If you've loved your dog, he/she will save your life, attack your attacker, stand between you and peril and will love you no matter what, even if it means their death. _If we humans were even a little bit of those things, we would be better people for it._

Dogs steal from their masters all the time. They attack and disfigure their masters’ children every day. They destroy their masters’ property all the time. They are always doing sneaky, deceptive things. What is the matter with you?
Wow this is so accurate !!! Praise God for this blessing of dogs. I always find it amazing that spelled backwards is God . Quite interesting and amazing all at the same time ♥️ makes sense since they give perfect and forgiving love , just like God/Jesus does for us.
I had my shelter rescued shepherd mix for 18 years before I had to have her put to sleep. I held her paw as she took her last breath. I'll never get over her but I believe I will see her again.
I, too, had a dog for 18 years. I got my Angel as a pup at just 3.5 weeks and had to bottle-feed her until she could feed on her own. Failing kidneys due to old age is what caused me to give her the last act of love - of "mercy" - I could give to my wonderful longtime companion. I swear, from the moment the vet techs laid her on the table and swatched where they would give her the injection that ended her life, and until her heart stopped, she looked at NO ONE, but me - and expressed sheer LOVE. I would swear on a Bible she told me "thank you" and how much she loved me! I've had to have other animals euthanized over the years, but none have relayed such a lovely and heartbreaking message, or one so strongly.
Destiny's Computer - I think so too, but I also train horses and, occasionally, I've trained house flies, just for kicks. I am now beginning with some births that come to my window. So I am starting to get confused! Lol.
Jeffrey Carter - No offense, but I'd like to clarify some points here. Maybe it is correct to say that crows, "and ravens", are amongst the smartest birds. But, it is obvious that: dolphins, whales, elephants, chimpanzees, baboons, and many other species are far smarter than birds. - And, as far as dogs are concerned, I very much doubt that a crow could, for instance, guide a blind person through the city trafic. This doesn't only show how smart dogs are, but it also shows how selfless, faithful, generous, trustworthy, loving and, therefore, admirable living beings they are. Wouldn't you agree? :)
Anyone who has had a bad day or been very sad and had your dog come and sit right up against you or sit in your lap, knows about the love of your pet. It goes so much further then your pet likes you because you feed him/her. When your pet comforts you, their reward is only that you feel better, no hotdogs involved.
They know know, my oldest girl dog always tries to take care of me when I'm sad or sick or hurt. And even though she can't actually heal me it always makes me feel at least a little better
How do you know they get no reward for comforting or sticking close to the animal that gives them food & takes the place of the pack they would be with in nature?
@@FigaroHey I'm afraid you lost me? The people in the video say your dog only loves you because you feed it. Do you agree with that? I think people and their dogs love each other. Your dog comes to cuddle just to be close, not just when you're eating, or you call your dog up to cuddle because you want to be with them. Both of you enjoy being together.
The love between you and a pet is so personal and wonderful. I have lost many over the years, there is nothing harder than having to let go of something that means so much to you. I thank God for each one I have had and loved and was loved in return. 💔

“Shelter dog” is not a breed. You can get pure breed or mixed from shelters. All dogs deserve to stay with their human forever no matter where they come from.
Maly Pejsek people don't buy purebreds because they can do more tricks. They pick purebreds for their looks and for character traits that are common to the breed. Shelter dogs aren't a lower quality type dog. Many of the best trained dogs are shelter dogs. Plus comparing purebred vs mixed, against Shelter dog vs dog with a home is like comparing apple and oranges.

@@kitten6363 What on earth are you taking about?! You can thank dogs for humans faster evolution for a start and when we started using languages. Dogs greatly helped us with hunting, protection etc which gave humans more time to learn and do other things. There is a reason they are called 'man's best friend'
Dogs are so amazing! I adore them. They love to have a job of some sort. Otherwise, they get bored and this is usually when they can become destructive. Ever notice how carefully they watch us for cues to our own behavior? They love softer, babytalk and to be treated well, rewarded for things we need them to do, either with food or praise! The better trained they are, the happier. When mistreated, or separated from humans, they get depressed, as they were meant to live in a pack. WE are their pack! These dogs were not mistreated or abused in any way. They were rewarded and with humans that were kind, so the negative comments to the contrary were just not necessary.
Seems like you just like to hear yourself talk. Nobody said the dogs were abused so I don't know why you are ranting about it. And i'm not sure why you typed a bunch of things about dogs that everyone already knows about. So thanks for contributing nothing and wasting my time. This is TH-cam. We are not a bunch of 2-3 year olds.
I’m much better with Dogs than I am with people. I love my dog more than anything & tell him that everyday. He’s with me everywhere & has stuck by me when people turned their backs on me. They’re truly amazing and mere words cannot express the way they become tied to our soul.
Dogs love us unconditionally as we should love them but we as humans are unable to love unconditionally. A dogs love is pure and we are very luck to have them.
Dogs do NOT love unconditionally. I don't know where people get this nonsense. Try not feeding a dog and then kicking it whenever it comes near and then see how unconditional that love is. That statement is one of the things that clues me into the fact that this person knows virtually nothing about dogs. As a dog trainer unfortunately almost all dog owner fall into this category. I pity the lives that the majority of dogs live with humans. I'd reverse the roles for most dog owners and then maybe, just maybe, they'd get a clue as to what their dogs were going though by being with them.
What causes some dogs to suddenly, without provocation, turn on their owners? In a recent news story, 2 pet pit bulls attacked their 22-year-old owner in Canada for no apparent reason while she was walking with them, as per usual, through the woods; they mauled her to death as if acting in collusion. Officers on the scene said they've never witnessed so gruesome an image as the deceased girl with the shredded throat. Both dogs were promptly euthanized by authorities. Sometimes house dogs stalk & kill strangers, even helpless infants. Why? I don't understand. On the other hand, we have countless reports of dogs saving human lives.
Pet in todays world who says humans can’t love unconditionally? The people important to me I’ll always love unconditionally no matter what they have done. I will always give people chances, I will always understand their demons no matter how dark and I chose to love instead
writerforlifeify to answer that question, animals have bad days just like we do. Some get sick and we can’t tell some grow old and don’t know what they’re doing. It’s so much deeper than you think. In the case you’re referring to, there may be more to the story. They were in the woods? Maybe the dogs ate something, stepped on something poisonous, got stung. Who knows
I love my dogs so much as soon as he started talking about wether or not his dog loved him I started tearing up and the moment my dogs heard me start choking up they popped their heads in the room to check on me and when I saw them do that I immediately erupted into tears and they leaped onto my lap. Halfway through the video and heard “even a shelter dog like Callie can do this” and it made me smile big, thank you so much for rescuing her. Now back to watching the video
I adore this man!!! I long for the day when every scientific experiment involving an animal is done by people who have the same amount of empathy. If we don't extinct ourselves I know that day will come.
Shelter animals are the best! They KNOW you've given them the one thing they want more than anything else: A forever home and they love and appreciate you so much more.
What a remarkable presentation. l thoroughly enjoyed it and yes sir you are correct, dogs are very special. l have 2 German Shepherd's, my husband died in my arms from natural causes, ex military, he was only 58. l have absolutely no doubt, that l wouldn't have survived this tragedy without them. They are highly trained dogs, however l did notice a change over the year since my Dear One has been gone. My dog's behaviour changed, they refuse to leave my side, to the point that they now sleep in the bedroom. We 3 have walked down this path over the last year with shattered hearts, however, we 3 are also walking along a path together towards acceptance to our loss and we 3 are adapting. So yes, dog's are indeed extremely special.
Dear Gates...thank you for sharing your story with us. I, too, have outlived the love of my life and my dog Lilly, has helped me heal and move up from that dark pit. Blessings to you, friend. Meg
@@megyoung9303 I don't know what I would have done without our little chihuahua dog Maxie and our orange cat Elmo when my husband passed away from cancer four years ago. They had been with us for over a decade when my husband was first diagnosed. After my husbands passing, they were both stuck to me, one on one side and the other on the other, be it on the couch or in bed. The two other cats are very sweet but hadn't been with us for long and were less involved. My little dog Maxie and my cat Elmo have also since passed. Besides the two other cats, I now have two rescue dogs, mom and daughter. They had been living in a pen with an old barrel for shelter!. They are real pieces of work! They are so joyful when I return home from a simple grocery store trip, you'd think that I'd just come home from the 100 years war. All of them, cats and dogs, past and present, have been a true blessing.

Watching and learning from Dr. Gregory was fascinating and heartbreaking at the same time. I couldn't help but think of all the dogs we torture in labs around the U.S. Dr. Gregory is not one of them, obviously, he takes great care, and has learned a great deal in a reverent way. But so many other dogs right now are being tortured unnecessarily in our university and business labs.
I used to always have cocker spaniels and eventually with age they would become deaf. I used hand signals along with verbal communication and it was so much easier and less traumatic for both of us when the inevitable deafness came. My dogs are and always will be my joy and my reason to live. 💕& I know it goes both ways 🐾🐾 Thank you Dr Berns for what you are doing for us & our furry family ❤️
Why the dichotomy of "cat people/dog people"? We love both and most dogs and cats can learn to get along. Our cat showed a great deal of empathy when our dog came home dopey from getting her teeth cleaned. The cat stayed with her friend until she recovered. These two don't cuddle or play with each other, but they are aware of each other as fellow beings and live peaceably without any sign of rivalry. They seem to appreciate each other's company when stressed, such as during thunderstorms. I appreciate your effort to document dogs' responses.
You are so right - dogs and cats should be loved equally. Our dog liked to sit in the porch, when his cat friend came along they'd have a quick nuzzle before he'd bark for us to open the door and let the cat in. What a partnership!
To highlight as a joke, if you haven't seen it yet, I'd highly recommend looking up dog diary v cat diary.... I've had both over the years - while over-simplified, anyone who has had both should appreciate the humor in it, and probably be able to relate to some level!
My late kitty, Twilight, was brought home as a kitten companion for the puppy I had many years ago. They spent a couple of years growing up together, occasionally being caught just chilling out side by side in the dog's bedding. Even though I grew up with cats, I'd always preferred dogs and rather liked the idea of having both together to see how they got along. It was such a joy, though my cat ended up having me all to herself for several years until I got my second dog, Merlyn. By that time, she had gotten over dogs as a thing and had moved on to a rather peculiar love affair with my ball python, Vader. Humans seem to be the only species that still has an issue with learning how to get along with others who we think are different from us. We can learn so much from our non-human brothers and sisters.
I have a standard poodle and a ginger cat that adopted us. He loves that poodle so much.. she on the other hand, just tolerates the cat and occasionally gives it a kiss. They lie together a lot, he loves to be close to her. Its so sweet. She is my guarddian angel and the cat is her guardian angel.
But she is with you, Molly will never leave. I wrote a piece which seemed dictated to me; I wrote so fast, I could hardly keep up - the page was full, I was crying, where did it come from? I am not sure how to put this here, if you know and could guide a Senior, I have Facebook? Blessings to You and Molly🐾🐾🌟❤️🦴
My dog passed away in march of 24, Canton I love and miss you so much words can’t describe you were and always will be my bestfriend and brother, I will be with you again one day
So pleased you recognise that humans are animals! People generally seem not to recognise this. Your quote"other animals" was a ray of light. I was beginning to believe that I was the only individual that uses the term "other animals" in speech. Thank you for the logical view.
Was I the only one who winced at the word “replacement” in regards to his first dog? His line right after that; about his second dog being an anti-Pug because he loved his first dog so much; did much to make up for a term that to me, at least, implies one dog is as good as another...
Glad someone else appreciated this as well! Call someone a mammal, and they won’t argue with you. Refer to humans as an animal, and you’ll have poo thrown at you like a chimpanzee.
Rose Thorne same! When he said that, I patted my dog (who overheard the whole thing, lol) and told him “he doesn’t mean ‘replacement’. He’s just trying to fill the empty space in his heart”
I blamed it on his science background. It discourages emotional expression. A new dog "replaces" one you lost about as much as a friend, family member, or mate is "replaced" by any new relationship. :p
I do believe dogs love us or something very close to love. I know I loved my dog because I respected him as a sentient being and because I could give him a secure and happy active life and he responded every day with what appeared to be happiness and affection - a bit like a marriage I suppose. I miss him.
My dog has been with me for 12 years . Only been without him about 6 times over night . I can't live with out him . He couldnt live with out me . I'm blessed to have him .
Their just so amazing! They have one flaw, they don’t live as long as we do. Nothing they can control tho. I don’t have children, so my dog in an odd way has slid into that spot in my heart.
I think of my dog as a partner. We communicate well. When she puts her paw gently on my chest she is saying I have a need you can fill, can you guess what it is. When I say the right words she jumps down and acts excited and goes in the direction of what she wants. I have trained her with language and she has trained me with her actions /reactions. I love this about our relationship.
A dog is the only animal that will love you more than they love themselves. I have enjoyed and owned dogs throughout my life, I’m 58 now and feel blessed to of been loved by them all.
I am by no means a professional trainer, but my dog and I have a special connection. I swear he understands me without words. He just needs some kind of signal, especially hands, to know what I mean. He knows when I need a cuddle and when I’m joyful. He’s my partner in crime and my best friend. I love him so goddamn much.
I think most dog owners would agree. I lost my best buddy yesterday. He was 15, and I am distraught tbh. He understood hand signals too. I know this because he understood when he was at one of the back doors, if I pointed to the other door, he’d come to the door I’d point at. Apparently, only dogs understand this. Not cats. They have a connection that supersedes any other animal. It’s because we have been together as two separate species for so long. And, anyone who says that a dog can’t smile….doesn’t know a dog, because they do!
I’ve loved all my dogs so deeply, it’s a bond & a love you have like no other. All they want is to be loved. I see ppl chaining, leaving them out in extreme weather, neglect & abuse them, and they will still love. That’s why when you see or hear about what some ppl do to them, it’s heartbreaking . They ask for so little but give so much back in return. My dogs are my precious babies until the very end no matter what! They are you’re family! ♥️🐾🐾♥️‼️
Where I live in Australia it is legal to keep a dog chained 24 hrs a day! A dog near me has been chained for over 8 years. Animal Welfare says they cannot do anything. Shameful, YES.
@@mcgreemcgree6752 omg!!! That’s shameful. They just passed a law hear that you are not allowed to tether dogs . Where are the animal activist working on that? Maybe you can call one of these rescue groups to see if they would like to give the dog up?
Loved this talk- I deliver dog agility training in England and my focus is on positive reward based training, clicker training where we use repetition to help the dog understand what we require. Dogs are very clever and can recognise our own facial expressions they know when we are happy, sad and how we feel. I've leant so much from my dogs and that are all so different when it comes to training some show great resilience where others can only cope with small repetitions of training once or twice a week. 😊
We have 4 rescue dogs for many, many years. When one of our fur babies pass on, we always find another to adopt. We do this bc they are absolutely the best friend any of us could have to love and they love soooo much in return.
My baby girl is a veterinarian. She could always communicate with animals very well as a child. She found and recommended our two rescue pups and our cat. They are incredibly sweet and special. When she says I have a good pet for y’all, we listen. She should pick pets for people as a sideline job.
I often look at my dog and think, "Ellie really wants to say something to me." But she doesn't. She probably thinks, "He wouldn't understand it anyway.... so why bother..."
As an animal lover to the very core of my being, I really love this project and will be researching to learn as much as possible about the progress that has been made since this TED talk took place
This is a really interesting field. I can definitely attest to pets having different personalities. It's so much fun raising a litter of kittens from the same parents and same variables and yet they each have their own personalities! We've got four kitties and it's been a crazy fun journey with them.
I had a pug years ago that I loved so much. When my husband died in 2007 , my son was 2. I couldn’t function and could barely take care of my son and myself due to severe depression. I gave my dog up- it was too much to take care of us three. I felt so guilty about this for years- because that pug loved me so much. Growing up, my son always wanted a dog- so I caved in 2 years ago and got a morkie- Sam. He brings us so much joy. I feel like I got a second chance with a dog. I will never ever give this one up. Sam has taken to me just like my pug and loves me so much.
My last dog a Chihuahua named Yoda died at 16 last year.He was sweet but just as protective as any big dog.He helped me through a very trying time by being my buddy no matter what.
We don't deserve dogs...but I'm forever grateful for the chance I've been given in this life to be loved by the greatest souls I've ever known, and those souls have four legs and wear permanent fur coats. They left permanent footprints on my heart and I was forever changed by their love. I'm a lucky human and I miss my boys every single day.
I have a Yorkie whom I love sooo so much, she loves me even more! Shes always there for me and always with me everywhere around the house. Shes smart and sweet and playful and makes me happy. She's my little blessing!!!! I'm addicted to dogs, best animals ever omg😭🥰🐶💕💕💕
I'm both a dog and cat person. I've had both and loved both very, very much. They're different animals with very different social behaviors. A lot of those differences are based in the fact that dogs, like humans, are pack-oriented, social animals that hunt cooperatively, and they have been domesticated longer than cats. Because the doc here speaks very successfully about dogs, I'm going to talk about cats. I think cats often get a bad rap, or a weird one, because of their natural behaviors. It's important to remember that dogs and humans have that social nature in common - we are both dependent on social relationships for survival. We CAN survive alone, but we do not thrive. Cats are more solitary by nature - though they are becoming less so through engagement with humans. But they hunt independently, and as a result of that, aren't as demonstrative as dogs - they don't have an evolutionary disposition to make big gestures visible to a larger group of animals. We do, and dogs do. We are louder, we are more accepting (well, dogs are - I sometimes think humans are becoming less so!) of behaviors we don't always like, we are more conciliatory (again...). We are more willing to go along to get along, because at basis, we NEED social relationships. Cats are different. They don't have an evolutionary need to get along, so if you are unpleasant to a cat, the cat will leave you alone or try to get away from you. For cats, "unpleasant" can mean making no effort to understand their language and customs. These features are more subtle in cats, because their habit is to communicate up close with one or two other animals. Much of cat language is nonverbal - ear position, eye contact. In fact, you may have noticed that cats very rarely meow at each other. The meow is for US (and often for dogs) because we don't read ears and eyes that well. Mostly what I want to point out is that cats are just as intelligent, and bond just as intensely with and love their humans, as dogs do. They simply express it differently - and they have expectations in return. They require respect. I don't see this as unloving,I see it as healthy. Unconditional love is delightful, but personally, I require respect, at least from other people I engage with. I will not love someone who abuses me, or ignores me. The first, I go away from. The second, I'll likely ignore back, because I feel that's what is hoped for, and I'm not here to purposely annoy people. I love dogs AND cats, but I interact with them differently - and I usually interact differently with individuals from either group, because in my experience, they all have very different personalities. But I have NEVER had a cat that didn't bond with me, or clearly love me, because I DO respect them, pay attention to what they're expressing, and give love and attention of a sort that cats enjoy. Never, ever think that cats don't bond, don't care, are indifferent, and don't suffer from separation or being abandoned, because they do, as much as dogs. They simply aren't habituated to show big responses. (And please do not think that because they're not as domesticated, they can "take care of themselves." Abandoned cats that never learned to hunt - and many don't because their mothers weren't there to teach them or didn't themselves have hunting skills, which are LEARNED - will starve if left alone. Just like most dogs.) Both species love, bond, grieve, get bored, get lonely, get irritable, get happy, get depressed. Just like us. Please, love cats AND dogs for the joy they can bring us, because they will love you back.
Exactly. This dude lost me at “you can leave early.” Obviously he knows nothing and represents one thing. Dogs are cool (they love cats and cats love them if they’re allowed to bond gradually; it’s called night and day for a reason) but humans... What a disappointment of a species. Good luck with his TED talk. And thankfully cats choose their owners.
Agree, "of the darkness..."with all you've said. I've had bonds with all kinds of animals. You simply put in the time and pay attention. My dad had a great gift, able to establish trust with horses, turkeys, dogs, squirrels...I watched him and tried to learn.
@@ssy12335 my grandpa was the same. He taught me a passionate love and respect for everything that walks, creeps, swims, and flies. That love, and the results I've gotten by putting in the time and energy to KNOW any member of another species, is one of the greatest sources of joy in my life.
Dogs are like humans but without a filter which makes them act and react in a straightforward and open way. Even though they can't communicate like us, we will always know where we stand with them
yeah, except for the millions of times that people have a dog, and think the dog would never attack them, and then suddenly, out of the blue, it attacks them, proving that they didn't in fact know where they stood with the thing. Stupidity doesn't necessarily mean benevolence.
My dog Halley (a small female border collie) was my best friend and the absolute love of my life, it's pretty weird saying that I know but she really was that special to me, she was just unique, velvety soft, cheeky and fun, funny and adorable, just beautiful inside and out. We had the greatest bond and she made me happy like no human could and I miss her every day. Ricky Gervais hit the nail on the head when he said "Dogs are amazing, they have soul, you couldn't invent a better thing or have a better thing in your life, not a house, not a car, a dog, they are brilliant"
Never failed... had attack dogs lay down for a belly rub.. just wish people could let go of ego and realize the more true love u give u get back ten fold
The pain of losing a beloved dog can be, and usually is, almost unbearable. We cry and grieve often as much as if a beloved relative or friend has died, and yet we will adopt another dog into our family to fill the hole left by its loss, knowing full well how much losing the new dog will hurt.
They're the best!!! I love when they talk to Us,some carry a conversation I say,bc of the way their tone changes!!!I just love Our furry friends and wingless angels, they are truly a gift!!! ☮️❤️ Thanks

Oh man. I'm so sorry for your loss. After 50 years I just found my soul mate. I know when it's time I'll be inconsolable. I know you'll be ok but dang it hurts. I lost my dog five years ago - he was 16. I miss him every minute of the day. :-(
@@fairwitness7473 Sometimes they leave us on their own.
Animals understand,
us by their very design, it’s innate.
Having a dog is a “loan” of incondicional love for 10+ years that you pay with a shitload of grief and pain.
I know that the joy and happiness a dog gives you is counterbalanced by the pain of there loss. This is what love is like. I cried for my dog when I lost him but I found another dog is the best cure for this. I loved.all my.dogs and dream of them and hope to see them again.

Thank you so much for your service 😢😭
God bless you and THANK YOU for your service, Peter!

@@raymurphy2182 True. I spoil mine. It's my duty. How can anyone resist? It's entirely true that we learn from dogs. Very true.
They are never going to talk about this either.
...oops..."You're" trying to teach.
Agreed!

dogs are not capable of love.
I believe God put dogs here with us so we could see a pure source of loyalty in an otherwise unloyal world.
Dogs steal from their masters all the time. They attack and disfigure their masters’ children every day. They destroy their masters’ property all the time. They are always doing sneaky, deceptive things. What is the matter with you?

I, too, had a dog for 18 years. I got my Angel as a pup at just 3.5 weeks and had to bottle-feed her until she could feed on her own. Failing kidneys due to old age is what caused me to give her the last act of love - of "mercy" - I could give to my wonderful longtime companion.
I swear, from the moment the vet techs laid her on the table and swatched where they would give her the injection that ended her life, and until her heart stopped, she looked at NO ONE, but me - and expressed sheer LOVE.
I would swear on a Bible she told me "thank you" and how much she loved me!

Actually crows are the smartest. Go check out some of the videos about them. Amazing
And, as far as dogs are concerned, I very much doubt that a crow could, for instance, guide a blind person through the city trafic.

Shelter dogs are wonderful and can be trained to do anything a purebred can. I am very glad that this has been proven, more than once.
Not all of them and not with the same degree of difficulty
The diversity of a mixed breed dog always beats a family tree that only has a few branches.

When my dogs are loving me I feel more secure than when most humans tell me “everything will be ok”

@MaxwellGonzalezJnr Hello Maxwell what's up?
I absolutely love this! I love dogs more than people! This is amazing! Thank you for doing this!
Can you see me...👁👁👀👁👁👀👁👁👀👂👂👂👂👂👂👂👂can you hear me too.
That makes me sick. I wish they would STOP!
@@debby8428 I agree cruel to dogs must be stopped. Labs should use cats.
@@Bill-dj9hv No. Labs should not use anything that is living.
I appreciate your effort to document dogs' responses.
mooster47 it’s called a joke... it’s ok to laugh and not take things so seriously mate. Cheers!
Me too, I’ve had and loved both cats and dogs.
We can learn so much from our non-human brothers and sisters.
it took me 55 years to understand unconditional love... I thank my two dogs for helping me for that incredible gift
So sweet
My first thought when he said dogs in an MRI was, I wonder how they did this humanely. They did it quite well! Awesome

I do this too! Or I say "non-human animals." I really don't understand how some people even believe that humans are not animals.
I miss him.
Very well put... and thoughtful.
Far better than a marriage!
That's not odd at all.
@Lucious De Luca Thanks! You're the reason we love dogs😂

I agree Rosie. What's up with you?
I’ve loved all my dogs so deeply, it’s a bond & a love you have like no other. All they want is to be loved. I see ppl chaining, leaving them out in extreme weather, neglect & abuse them, and they will still love. That’s why when you see or hear about what some ppl do to them, it’s heartbreaking . Hey there
Loved this talk- I deliver dog agility training in England and my focus is on positive reward based training, clicker training where we use repetition to help the dog understand what we require.
She has found a job fir her soul as well as her heart and mind 🥰

This is a really interesting field. I can definitely attest to pets having different personalities. It's so much fun raising a litter of kittens from the same parents and same variables and yet they each have their own personalities! We've got four kitties and it's been a crazy fun journey with them.
My dog is my baby and my companion. No love is like this. Truly unconditional.
As much as I love my pups, this talk was light on substance. I kept waiting and waiting . . . . . nothing.
My dog is my best friend and my blessing. I love her so much!
Just like most dogs.)
Both species love, bond, grieve, get bored, get lonely, get irritable, get happy, get depressed.

@@warondogs8199 so no human has ever attacked another out of the blue when they thought it would never happen?
My dog Halley (a small female border collie) was my best friend and the absolute love of my life, it's pretty weird saying that I know but she really was that special to me, she was just unique, velvety soft, cheeky and fun, funny and adorable, just beautiful inside and out. We had the greatest bond and she made me happy like no human could and I miss her every day. Ricky Gervais hit the nail on the head when he said "Dogs are amazing, they have soul, you couldn't invent a better thing or have a better thing in your life, not a house, not a car, a dog, they are brilliant"
If my dog doesn't like you, then I won't like you. They are the greatest judge of character and can "feel" when someone is no good.
Never failed... had attack dogs lay down for a belly rub.. just wish people could let go of ego and realize the more true love u give u get back ten fold
Yes! I have used that phrase many, many times, and I have found this to be extremely accurate!!!
The pain of losing a beloved dog can be, and usually is, almost unbearable. We cry and grieve often as much as if a beloved relative or friend has died, and yet we will adopt another dog into our family to fill the hole left by its loss, knowing full well how much losing the new dog will hurt.
