What’s up guys! Im Dr. Lindsay a Small Animal Veterinarian and today were going to talk about
3 Common Reasons Your Dog is Eating Grass???
    1. The first reason you might not have known is that Grass can act as an antacid for your dogs stomach. Most dogs are reported to gobble up grass first thing in the morning and then moments after vomit up yellow foam or bile. And after they vomit they are perky, they want their breakfast and are ready to start their day. Eating the grass fills their stomach with something that they can then retch it out, releasing the bile contents that were nauseating.
A simple solution to this problem is feeding you dog a small bit of food right you wake up or even bring some food outside with you to feed to them. That way the bile in the stomach will digest food like its meant to do and not cause irritation.
    2. The second reason could be from a dietary deficiency in vitamins and minerals or fiber, and your dog is craving more nutrients or fiber in their diet. Dogs will eat grass to get more fiber, which helps them digest their food, pass stool, and keep their GI system operating like clockwork. You may need to speak to your veterinarian about switching their diet to something with less protein and more fiber.
    3. It might just be INSTINCT for dogs to eat grass. Dogs are Omnivores meaning they eat foods of both plant and animal origins to complete their diet. If your dogs diet is complete and balanced and your pooch still loves eating grass, don’t be worried!
Dogs digestive systems, dietary needs and cravings have evolved to fit the lifestyle of domesticated dogs, while canines in the wild got their nutrients from grass eating, plants and eating an entire animal they hunted for dinner.
Is Grass BAD for your dog to eat???
NO. Normal grass eating behaviors are perfectly fine. However, grass treated with herbicides and pesticides can be toxic to dogs.
So if you know your lawn is treated for bugs, try to avoid them from eating grass. Feed them small amount of kibble or treats before going outside and teach them commands such as “no” and leave it” for them not to eat the grass.
If my dog starts eating grass does that mean he is sick?
It may indicated that your dog is sick or feeling nauseas due to bile build up from not eating due to a secondary disease. A Study at UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine found that 9% of dogs showed signs of illness prior to eating grass. The research also concluded that grass and plant-eating is a normal behavior for domestic dogs.

My dog used to eat grass a lot. She would even eat fallen maple leaves and throw them up like she would with grass. I've been sharing my broccoli, carrots and cabbage with her and I've noticed a pretty significant reduction in her wanting to eat grass.
It's so fun to see her eat her veggies.😊🐶❤️
    She's such a good girl.

hahaha, we jokingly call our dog a goat. She grazes regularly on fresh spring stems, but she's also known to eat a bunch if her stomach feels funky.

My golden retriever grabs mouthfuls of grass and yanks it out of the lawn all the time. He'll gulp it down, roots, dirt and all before we can get it out of his mouth. He eats a partially raw diet with some no salt green beans.
