Put this into practice at the range over the past week and it’s completely changed my strike and consistency! This is what separates this channel from the rest, mark really is a top coach, thanks!
Just tried this move at the range after practically duffing my 4 wood all season. Game changer. Never hit it so straight and far in years. Saved me a $175 visit to my pro (who is awesome in his own right). Mark, you are the best on TH-cam at these concepts.
I’ve been playing for 32 yrs now and I to “am shocked”! that I can consistently hammer my 3 wood off the deck. I’m much better at it now but still not confident with it. These are good tips.
After watching this concept Yesterday I was keen to put my new way of hitting a 3W off the deck, by using this technique it’s a game changer for me, great tip, thanks for providing this tip
Great advice, Mark! Every mid-to-higher handicap amateur golfer I see needs to watch this video and save it to watch several more times! I am a senior golfer who still has a 95+ MPH clubhead speed with my driver and 92-94 MPH with the fairway woods. However, I do not play any fairway woods with less than a 16.5* loft (17.5* preferred). The funny part is that I have my strongest hybrid lofted down to 15.5* because I hit down on it a bit more than I do with my fairway wood (3 to 5 degrees with the hybrid vs 1.5 to 2 degrees with the 4-wood). I don’t have both clubs in my bag together, putting the hybrid in my bag when I am playing short par 4s (or very long par 3s) and/or par 5 holes where I want to go for greens in two and want the added spin from the hybrid to hold the greens (I also carry either a 22* or a 24* hybrid).
Thanks Mark. Great explanation. I have always been able to hit a 5 wood off the ground but struggled with those low slices with a 3 Wood. Now I have something new to think about and try.
Absolutely spot on, I don’t carry a driver because I hit down on the ball. Instead I use a deep face 16 degree off the tee cut down to the same length as my 7 wood. Off the deck I use a shallow face 15 degree cut to the same length. I very rarely go to the range so I try to eliminate as many adjustments as possible.
Mark I've been watching your vids for a while but only just subscribed sorry but I've been running to the club every time to practise your advice, I've got to tell you that I've gone from scoring 100 + to 85\86 in 3 months following your tips and once I've played a few comps I think my 22 handicap will be coming down very quickly. Cheers pal keep up the great work.
I'll tell you what once I started figuring out how to hit it higher on the face, my 3 Wood off the deck game improved so so much. This is such a great tip great content as always Mark!
This was exactly the video I needed this week. I've been working really hard on my game and have seen big improvements everywhere apart from the 3 wood off the deck! Thanks Mark!
Mark, thanks a lot for this. Tried it today (granted only at the range) and I went from a fade no longer than my normal 6/7 iron to low, bullet draws carrying 200 total 230 with my 17 degree utility wood. That’s now my current driver range, tried the same with driver but got the short fade, weak shots but wow what a difference, thanks. Now I need to work out my driver to go further than my utility wood😂
I must make this comment because I have been having trouble as stated in the video, and it was killing my scores. So I have followed putting into practice just making the very slight move left with my left elbow - the results fantastic so thank you sooooo much
Hi as an older golfer i have a set that goes to a 6 iron then carry a 4 and 5 hybrid and then a 7 and 5 fairway wood and driver. They cover ever iron club from 5 to 2 iron but for me much easier to bit and control. I play off 12 by the way and am getting that down to below 10 quickly now. Love your videos, they are really easy to follow and understand.
I placed the ball one ball forward in my center of my stance.it really let's me cover the ball and ensure a solid ball first strike..I do play for a slight draw...hybrids as well
Great tip. I mainly use my 3-wood, 5-wood for accuracy. My driver is unreliable. This past week I used your tip and gained huge distance. 3-wood off a tee was 240, normally 200 yards. My 5- wood was 210 or better. Normally 190. I was able to par the longest par 5's measuring over 550. Thanks for the turbo tip.👍
Great video mark, I was out Monday and decided to use a 5w off the tee as I'm struggling with my driver plus it was only a 9 hole par 4 and to my surprise was pretty successful with it (2007 big bertha diablo) I did hit 1 beauty with it at 240yds I was shocked 😲
I switched to the Halo 3+ Hy wood early last year, which made a decent difference to my scores, because I found it so much easier than a 3 wood. Watching this video, though, I wonder whether its because I'm naturally doing what you're saying here and hence the results are better. I do sit the ball back in the stance a bit when playing it and also look for a slight descending blow. Time to dust off the old 3 wood and see if I can replicate the hybrid swing/strike. Great video as always. Keep em coming.
I appreciate your vids! I’m a year into golf, and I’ve gone so back and forth between scooping and digging with my 3 wood.. I eventually pulled it out of the bag and replaced it with a ping g410 5wood at 17.5* (I think one of your previous vids made the 3w to 5w recommendation 🤔) A tad shorter with a bit more loft (I cranked it up to 19* to start) really helped me mentally to hit down. Now I’ve got it down to 16* and I think I’m fine without a 3 wood 😅
@@zazhou that's one of the reasons i picked up the used Ping 5 wood... as it's a bit stronger at 17.5 for a 5 wood... so it gave me a good option to start with a decent 5 wood loft at 19... but to be able to have 3 wood loft with a shorter shaft when i wanted to crank it down to 16... i'm not consistent enough to hit a modern 3 wood.... but I find myself BARELY pulling out a wood anyway... on par 5's i've learned my lesson in trying to "Go for it" in 2... now i just lay up to 100yards and give myself a better chance on an approach. : )
Exactly my issue and the reason I haven’t hit 3 wood for 6 months! Used to hit it really well and now I top it too much. Ill be getting it back on the range 🤞🏼
Love these tips, got a handicap of 5 but fairway wood is a club I tend to avoid hitting unless I have a good chance of getting on a par 5 in 2 due to not being confident with it
Tried this today with my 5 wood ( the 3 and 5 wood are the two that I struggle with) some improvement, I think I need it further back, great tips, I saw a few start looking a bit better.
This explains a lot. After replacing my driver I "suddenly" unlocked the potential of my swingspeed, and really needed to get the woods working. My hybrid 21* is great, but it only goes around 200-205meters, and my driver is consistently landing from a high ballflight around 225-230. Really missed having something in the middle for those layups/hazard-savers. Going out tomorrow already for a range+park course session, no better chance to practice. :)
Mate, I watched this video, took away 1 thing which is to keep more weight on front foot, played a swindle yesterday and shot 45 points and won. Supported better wood and iron play
Great video Mark! For me the issue is playing the FW like the driver instead of more centrally located in my stance. This isa game changer - thank you!
great video instruction thanks, i recall seeing the famous Snead v Hogan shell match , and seeing Hogan blast a 4 wood onto the green, he gouged out quite a divot like an iron rather than 'sweeping' the ball off the turf, in fact i think we average golfers have been told too often to 'sweep' the fairway wood rather than your advice ! cheers
Thank you Mark I took this advice today at my club (Silloth on Solway) we are off mats but it seemed so strange to put the ball back in my stance and handle forwards but the results were fantastic I have a Ping G 400 5 wood and wow wow
I tossed the 3 wood out and have a 17 degree shallow-faced Ping, and I'm in love with it. Then tossed the 5 wood, obviously, and go straight to 21 degree 7 wood. Happy. But I have a 19 degree driving iron, too, and this is the best combination I've had in the bag in years.
I love my ZX mk1 3 wood. It's the 13.5 degree strong 3 wood. Great off the tee when a driver is too much club, but I'm more than happy to smash it off the deck into long par fives if needed!
Great video I will take to the driving range when the snow melts and try to dial in my Cobra Ltdx Max 3 wood. If I don’t I might trade in and get the 5 wood. I have the 7 wood and hit that great.
My 3 and 5 woods are my favorite clubs in the bag, I'm pretty consistent with the both of them. I don't even have a driver in my bag because I find my 3 wood runs out just as far. Good tips mark 👍🏼
I tend to be a bit steep with the woods as I play the 5 wood from 5 iron position and 3 wood from half a ball with in front of that. I have TS2 fairways at 15 and 18 degrees, cranked up 0.75 degrees to help launch.
I think the issue with trying to play the 3 wood from closer to the middle of the stance is that due to its a longer shaft its more difficult & leaves less time to square the face. Would you suggest having the 3w shortened & swingweighted so it plays at 5w length?
I worked this out for myself after not carrying my 3w for a year. I wish I had seen this tip earlier. I realised the ball was in a similar position to my driver. Once I moved the ball back for all my fairway woods to about middle with the handle a bit forward the difference was dramatic.
Nice one Mark. I've got my 3 wood set to 16*, any lower and it just doesn't launch. I'm happy with it though as a couple hundred yards will do me off the deck.
Calloway RazrX 15 degrees loft . Great video I have been very inconsistent with 3wood and I believe it because I’ve been sweeping at the ball with the handle in a neutral position so if I understand what your saying ball position an inch back from lead heel shaft handle forward slightly and club face slightly closed am I correct 👍
Lowest I hit off the fairway is 16.5, and a 21 hybrid behind that. Depending on the lie, wind and shape of the hole I choose between the two. Definitely agree an iron like swing on my 16.5 fairway with a baby draw is the ideal shot. That said, a high cut can work as well depending on the hole. I play of a 2hcp.
I have a 16 degree 3 wood and I can hit it off the deck. My issue is it sometimes fades right. The part of this video about ball position will help me a lot, because that is a struggle of mine; not knowing where the ball should be in my stance. There are times where I hit a nice baby draw because the ball was in the right position and other times where it fades because the ball was in the wrong position.
Great tips! Just picked up the G430 5 wood and absolutely love it. I seem to get used to hitting it off the tee or deck, then struggle a little switching it up. I guess mixing it up at the range is a good plan?
LOVE YOUR VIDEOS! It’s probably best that I not start wondering how rolling the trail forearm over the leading forearm (which I JUST got the “feel” for after 30 years of golfing) works when having the wrists ahead of the club head and… well, thankfully the 3 wood off the deck isn’t something I’ve struggled with over the last couple of years-it’s actually one of my favorite shots to hit. 😂
Would appreciate a video about hitting off a tee with fairway woods. What comes over from driver swing, what fundamentals stay from fw off the deck. I find I'm better off the deck, I just don't know what I'm doing off a tee.
I play a fade with my fairways primarily. I don’t really try to hit down on it, but on the LM I am descending into it slightly. The 3 in my bag currently is a 13 degree sim2 ti, so I don’t have much loft to give. Even with a fade, this thing comes out screaming. Perfect for the dogleg rights.
I strike the ball much better (draw) if I place the ball back of center of stance,I also play driver from middle of stance for a draw. Probably a band aid for something I do wrong but it feels great and ball goes where it should
hey mark, on short 4s and I need to hit my 3 wood I find it much easier to tee it up (like a driver but not as high) and slightly swing up and it works 100% better for me then level/downward ON A TEE, not off the deck obviously. am i crazy or maybe on to something? had to go to 16.5* 5 wood to find more consistancy that old 15* (and shorter shaft helps too)
Great video Mark, thank you. I've shied away from using my fairway wood, unless off a tee, but this gives me some great pointers. Should my weight be slightly on my lead side to help with hitting partly down?
@@MarkCrossfield good day on the range. Some bad habits to work through but I was happy with the immediate results. Definitely more dependable strike and direction. I’m a slow swinger so I have a 16.5 degree 3 wood :)
4:58 gave me a "holy shit" kind of realization about my swing. Such a simple concept yet I've never heard or seen it demonstrated. Always have struggled with a slight slice (or terrible lol) with my 3 wood. I've never been able to hit a pure straight shot and this just clicked for me. Ball has always been to far forward in my stance!

Taking this to the range TODAY. Thanks
Let me know if it helps
@@MarkCrossfield good day on the range. Some bad habits to work through but I was happy with the immediate results. Definitely more dependable strike and direction. I’m a slow swinger so I have a 16.5 degree 3 wood :)
Hello Mark could this technique be applied to long irons and hybrids
Totally yes. 👍
Putting my 3 wood into the middle of my stance was a game changer.
