I've been using a 3W for 30 years and this is the best instructions on how to properly hit them. I watch this video often to get all the info Clay is putting out.
I love your videos. It’s nice to see someone that just purely knows what they’re talking about. How each part of the swing affects the next. When I watch a lot of golf videos something is missing. You’re irons videos have changed my game forever. Can’t thank you enough
As a left handed golfer I really appreciate you using the terms "lead" and "back" for explaining hip, shoulder and arm movement instead of left and right. We are always burdened with translating the left and right. Thank you
one of the best explanations ive seen out there. Ive been struggling with my woods and saw a few things that "will" work. Im going to try this out tomorrow.
LOL. I crush my drives, I'm on or at least near the green with my irons, but I pull out my 3 or 5 wood and I'm like a beginner again. I either top the ball or push it way left...I totally understand you.
A light grip on the club and a slower backswing will also help with your timing, shoulder turn, and wide arc extension, needed for distance and consistency.
Wow, can't wait to get out on the range and put this into practice. This guy has a great delivery for a tutor, already I feel more confident about my 3 wood.
3 Wood is my best/most consistent club...but this video taught me A LOT!! Especially ball positon and keeping my eyes in BACK of the ball (sometimes I slide forward as I transfer my weight...not good). Thank you!
I topped my fairway woods every time, so I just hit a 4 iron. I thought you had to swing up, so I stood up out of the shot every time. Now I swing down, and I have not topped it since. I`m 58 and have not broke 50 this year. I used mt 3 wood four times this week and shot a 47. My partner could not believe how well I hit it. 180 yrds every time. I feel like I am taking lessons. You provide an outstanding service for the average golfer. I feel much more confident. I can`t thank you enough.
Brilliant explanation and walkthrough as always of all key elements. Your videos have helped me go from a 20 to 11.8 handicap in a few months. Big thank you from me Clay, keep up the good work. ps, only bit still having issues with is big drives....
Fantastic lessons. I'm a 2 handicap and have lost my ability to hit 3 wood consistently. Cant wait to get to range and implement this. makes perfect sense and i know what I'm doing wrong. Developed a bad habit.
Hi Clay, I've been watching you're vids through lockdown here in the UK to keep me sane lol but honestly wish I could come Stateside just to get lessons off you. such informative vids, cheers matey & stay safe.
Thank you for so much information about the swing explained so well. This is the detail that golfers need to improve their game. Practice without a understanding of what you should be doing is a waste of time......this makes me look forward to those par 5's.
I been watching your videos for 3 years now. I was wondering if you could make videos about golf strategy. When to use the driver, how far away. When to use fairway woods. When to use hybrid how far away. What lie and what club is best. When to use wedges etc. When holfing I'm never quite sure which strategy is best. Now that I know how to swing pretty good, I need help which club and when. Thank you very much for all you do.
Well done Mr Clay. You can remove the topping of 3 woods in a jiffy. Besides you gave us many other tips that will help our golf. You speak smoothly, confidently and one gets the impression you are so accomplished and fully know your golf. That was also evident from your golf swings and changing them for educating the viewers. That requires skill and being on top of your own game. Thank you for your excellent and much needed tips. Regards
Good morning Clay and Q, I have a question regarding the eyes behind the ball in the 3 wood downswing. Does that same eye position apply to irons also? Thanks
On the course I find myself asking “What my inCLAYnation?”. Remembering tips, after practicing drills. 75 on Par 73 from the tips yesterday… and there is much more room for improvement and consistency. Finally someone explains what I should be doing and what happens when it felt good but went weak. Didn’t think I could be more golf obsessed… I was wrong… My girl wants words with you Clay😂 .
Hey Clay- real good video. Easy to follow- thanks. A great investment that I've made for my golf game is a simple tripod (15 bucks) my phone fits in so I can take a video and compare to yours. Very easy to compare and see where I'm off. Thanks again
Clay ... well done! All great points that I have missed in playing. Keeping your eye slightly behind the ball when swinging your woods was an exceptional tip! I'm now a subscriber ...!
Thanks Clay, this helped me alot! When you hit 3 wood off the tee, do you play the ball up towards your front foot or near the middle of your stance still? Thank you!
In another video (can’t remember which one), I recall Clay teaching that “you always want a slightly descending blow for a 3-wood, whether it’s teed up or on the turf. A descending blow will create contact higher on the face, which creates less spin and more distance” (something to that effect)
Thank you. I worked on this and went out to play Tuesday with the ladies. Only topped my 5 wood about two times. The ladies were surprised how much better I was hitting.
Great video. Not sure if there is a difference b/t hitting 3 wood and hybrid, but the left shoulder tip had me hitting my hybrid consistantly solid, straight and far. Thanks.
For all full swings/shots, save for the driver, the ball should be within a couple of balls just in front of center. Best of luck! Nate | TSG Instructor
It's simple folks , once your right elbow touches your right side then at that moment you are now hitting the ball with YOUR TURN from there till impact ..... thats all there is to it and you use that sequence FOR EVERY CLUB
I’m reading that pro have shorter shafts in drivers than what I can buy off the rack. I’m 5’9” If I get fitted, will that show what length clubs I should have? Thnx
Great stuff, thanks. For teeing off with a 3-wood, I'm guessing I'd want to tee it low and maybe have it slightly forward of the usual position, is that about right?
Great question...if you move the ball more forward in your stance you'll be hitting more up on the ball similar to a driver and get more distance that way. You can of course leave the ball position the same as hitting off of the turf as well. Whatever works best. Play well! Nate |TSG
It depends on what you're trying to accomplish. You can swing like you would from the turf and make contact on the downswing by moving the ball back in the stance a little bit or you can move the ball forward some and hit it on the upswing like you would a driver and launch the ball for more distance. I just wouldn't tee it too high in either scenario. Best of luck! Nate | TSG Instructor
I am 5’9” and weight 140 lbs hitting 3 woods 250yards off the tee using driver like swing, and cant get it on air from the ground cause using the same technique.
Thanks for the lesson, I found it very useful. However, I don't believe that, as you've stated, its the pulling upwards of the lead shoulder that releases the lag. If you freeze this video at 5:54 you will notice that at contact with the ball your lead shoulder is in fact only slightly tilted backwards and yet you've released all the lag by then. Something else is releasing the lag. Can you explain that?
Such great content on how to smoke the 3Wood off of the deck. I typically can carry my 3W 260-270 yds with a roll out to 290 off of the tee... my goal is to do the same off of the turf. I will keep some of these tips in mind!

As a left handed golfer I really appreciate you using the terms "lead" and "back" for explaining hip, shoulder and arm movement instead of left and right. We are always burdened with translating the left and right. Thank you

Thanks Clay. Very comprehensive lesson on one of the more difficult shots in golf.
Glad you enjoyed it!
thousands of golf videos, this guy is above nearly all of them

thanks for the videos. In my opinion the best golf instructional channel on youtube. and it is not even close.
Love those bullet points printed out on the screen! Great visual reminders as takeaways from the video. Keep up the awesome work, Clay!

Nice to see this drill. Lee Trevino used to teach the same way. So many others say you have to sweep the club. Which looses distance.

Tried to push every thing down , took a divot so deep I could feel the heat from hell, dislocated my back in 5 locations, retired from golf that day.
How should I approach a tee shot using my 3 wood? Since it is tee'd up, am I still trying to hit down on it and trying to take a divot?
I have found if I tee up a 3 wood I have to tee it lower than my driver to avoid the dreaded "popup".
You can tee it up to where you just have a perfect lie out of the fairway or you can hit up on it similarly to the way you would with a driver.
do you still hit down on the ball when hitting a 3W off the tee?
It depends on what you're trying to accomplish. Yes, if you're hitting it like you would be off the ground. If you're trying to hit it further off a tee then you would want to hit it like a driver.
