I’m new at this and just started taking a few lessons but this video was amazing. I was doing everything wrong but now you showed and explained it perfectly. Thanks. 🙏
Gr8 lesson Chris. I've always teed my 3W up 1/2" and crush it as I'm a good driver of the ball. However, from the fairway I never hit it higher than 20 feet in the air even with solid contact. I tried taking a divot just in front of the ball and now I launch it in the air. From now on I'll always tee my 3W low. Thanks Brother
When I close my eyes and think 3wood I see a topped shot. This gives me a great chance to change that. And your explanation of 3wood off the tee is excellent. Part of the reason for failure with this club is confusion about ball position, tee height, angle of attack etc. this helps clear that fog immensely. Thanks!
Agreed. I swore off fairway woods for years in favor of hybrids but i finally figured out that doesnt work either. So i put a 3w back in the bag and am struggling with it off the tee, fairway, ruff. Everywhere. Gonna give this ago. Been a couple other good fairway woods vids come out here lately on other chnls as well. Well see i guess 🤷♂️
Great lesson Chris! Took your instruction to the range and hit solid 3 woods from the turf and the tee for an hour. The next round, I shot 74 with birdie and eagle looks due to well struck 3 woods. I have renewed confidence w the 3 wood. Your lessons are a huge help. Thanks again!
Great video. As it happens I hit a downward 3W off the fairway and a level or slightly upward 3W off the tee as I find the slight tee height (maybe 10mm) gives me more reliable contact off the tee and more distance. I often use 3W instead of driver on this basis on tight holes. There are definitely two ways of hitting this club off the tee and both can work for different players.
Hi Chris, I actually use a very low green tee, so it's the same swing. It's transformed my game and simplified my shot thoughts, and set up off the tee and fairway. Thank you for going through this again as it works so well.
I just discovered your channel today and after watching this video I immediately "liked and subscribed" for several reasons. First of all you are a very good teacher. I think you would make a good teacher of any topic you know well, not just golf. Secondly, I appreciate all the reminders not to take things to extremes, like placing the ball slightly inside your left heel ("a ball or two") but not too much, or to almost take a divot, but not really. Plus your overall demeanor is very engaging. You're obviously a very good golfer, but you come across as not placing yourself above your viewers. I'm really looking forward to watching your other videos. Thank you from a new fan.
I’m a 70 year old 5 handicap and I’m impressed with how often i learn new things from your videos. Always wondered why my teed 3 woods didn’t get the carry that i got on the fairway….now I know…55 years late but…now I know. Thank you. How about teed irons I’m guessing the same thing would translate there?
Awesome again Chris! I've always been told to sweep with the three wood and have struggled out of the fairway. Recently discovered hitting down with my new 3W. Will try lowering the tee and using the same technique. Thanks!!
Great video.Thank you..... I know this is a silly question but I have to ask it. Do you look at the ball or the tee in front of the ball when swinging?
Thanks for the tip chris you make it so easy i will be trying this out tomorrow to use this club which i have not used for months due to having poor contact which i have not used for a while.
This promotes more consistency for sure.. Definitely gotta try these methods! Btw some tips to share: To adapt my setup and swing to the hills and lies on the course I do the following: 1. Determine where my club head bottoms out. 2. Where is the ball position perpendicular to my target line and body. The bill of hat, the 45 degree turn of my hip and how everything fits balanced as references 3. Rotate my body with minimum shift. 4. I create different angles in my backswing to deliver the club back and control trajectory & 5. I establish 3 progressively faster baseline tempos for set distance ranges.. effortless, more speed & full swing!
The way you describe it Chris it just makes so much sense. I've been trying to sweep it away and inevitably it goes low and left. Ball too far forward and result exactly as you said. Thanks for this video 😊
I have just recently took up golfing and Chris your videos have helped so much!!! I am no means any good yet but the effort is there lol ty sir for what you do
Great video. Probably the best I have seen. I love the explanation of the club face and the purpose of the swing. Probably common sense to others but it really clarified to me how I want to hit the shot. I have struggling with this club for a long time and now I am a lot closer to hitting better shots with this club
Thanks Chris, hitting off the tee has been a headache but using one swing makes much more sense - the tee is going lower from now on. Can't wait to get out and put all these tips into action,
Thanks Chris helpful video. I used to use the 3 wood as my driver effectively. Huge confidence with it and actually hit it often better off the fairway. However using driver now and lost my way. Also using hybrids so have opted for some lower loft hybrids to give a go as a 3 wood replacement essentially. Will see how it goes.
Hello from Arizona. I just found your channel. You’re great. You have helped with driver. I have never been hitting so good. The fairway woods helps. Thank you Sir 👊🏼👍
I really enjoy hitting my fairway woods. It's important to spend time practicing with them. I'm looking forward to trying this on the range. Thank you.
that was terrific! what a great instructor you are! And you swing is just gorgeous, love the perfect follow through! i can only dream of a swing like that! thanks!
This is exactly what I do and it works great! When using Driver I put the tee behind the ball in order to hit up on the ball. It absolutely works for me.
I had the two swing thing going with my 3 wood and the swing up move does creep into my fairway wood shots... spot on analysis. Thin fairway shots... drive me wild. lol I will give your tips a go. TY mh
As someone that is slightly over the top I definitely can see the benefit to having the two different swings for different scenarios as in the fairway I need to hit down on the ball as it's placed and off the tee with driver or 3 wood I would have to hit up on the ball
couple of things ... good info here, and would include a discussion about dynamic lofts - 15* vs 7*. I'm assuming this is due to a different posting (decel) move and shaft action, so that even with a downward attack angle, the loft the ball sees is 8* higher. Not sure I can explain back spin differences - may be due to where on the club face the ball was struck. Would be interested your take.
Golf youtubers must have a daily conference, heard the same ball position advice off a tee vs the deck on another video yesterday. Went from consistently topping to consistently ball striking immediately! Thanks!
Thank you for a great tutorial!!! Now I know why I could not hit my 3 wood, my weight was too much on my right side!!! and I teed my ball to high too! My poor 3 wood was standing in the corner for a long time! I am going to make him my best friend again!! Thank you for the tips!! 🥰⛳️🏌️♀️
Love your coaching style and explanations Chris, and the drills and changes you demo are so memorable and easy to implement on the course/range. What’s equally memorable though is my new favourite quote of the year at 2:00 - “if your club is moving upwards, it is TECHNICALLY moving away from the ground.” 😂
Great video👍 very good point, I'm so used to hitting up of a tee with the 3 wood, the few times I need to hit off the fairway I struggle to change that swing thought with 3wood. Think I'm changing my swing thoughts with 3wood. Cheers.
Hey Chris can you explain what type of swing path we need to have for a 3 wood ? I see how most pros or low handicap golfers almost swing their woods like irons but when I try it I always hit a horrible shot …only time I hit a effective 3 wood shot is if I do more of a driver type swing …
3 off the deck kept me loving the game. Old softball player. Grip it and rip it. Just don't lean. Keep more weight on the front foot and if that don't work, hit the five. Happy trails!
I cant get over how epic and game changing your lessons have been for me.. literally watch a video from Chris Ryan, implement it and VIOLA. Rinse and repeat! Thanks man 🙏
Chris, If you have the ball slightly further back in the stance than you recommend, would that also not foster hitting down on the ball , as you would get to it earlier in the swing and therefore more likely in way down than up?
How do explain the draw clearly hit on the left as can be seen by the path of the black line? Your club path wa a slightly left and face to path was 2° open?
Just want to say that I really enjoy the instruction. It is some of the best I have seen but as a golf course superintendent it really bothers me that in several of your videos you are hitting shots when there is grounds crew members mowing in front of you. I think this is a bad example to be setting for people. I have been hit by golf balls and so have my crew so please be careful and just remember that we are trying to stay out of your way while doing our job, and make the course the best we can for you. Please keep the amazing instruction coming. Please respect the grounds crew. Thanks for all you do for the game of golf.
I love my 3 wood off the tee, it's my go to club for most par 4's and tight par 5's. But off the fairway I am too inconsistent. My guess is ball position is too far forward off the deck. And possibly a little of me trying to help the ball up...... I'll give this a try!
Chris, great video. Let's say you are doing all these things correctly, but are struggling to get the distance you're in search of. For example, I hit a 300 yard drive on a par 5 and I've got 250 left. It seems like I am always 50 to 70 yard shy after I hit the 3 wood. Maybe I'm just not hitting it hard enough? I connect with it pretty good. I do have generic top flite clubs, so I'm wondering if that's it as well. Any thoughts would be awesome.
Like the tips you give, can you post some where you don't need be on the range or on the course? Like at home/office to practice because it"s not always possible to be outside (winter is coming). Thanks grts
Best 3-wood video I have seen on TH-cam. Strongly recommend.
Thanks Patrick appreciate it
FINALLY!!! I have watched hundreds of instructional videos before… yours have been the best by FAR. Clear, precise & to the point. Brilliant!! 🍺🍺
I’m new at this and just started taking a few lessons but this video was amazing. I was doing everything wrong but now you showed and explained it perfectly. Thanks. 🙏

Part of the reason for failure with this club is confusion about ball position, tee height, angle of attack etc. this helps clear that fog immensely. Thanks!
Thanks Craig, not easy when you hit a club from both tee and fairway, but having one swing should make things easier
Much needed video. I hate hitting with my 3W. Hopefully, I can change the love/hate relationship with the club.

Thanks Chris, I no longer worry whether I’ll top this shot. I’ve happily put my three wood back in my bag. Great clear and concise instruction.👏👏👏
Thanks Daniel, sounds like you have the perfect combo for fairway and tee 👊
I agree, great lesson on hitting the 3 wood. I am looking forward to implementing some of the things I learned in tomorrows game. Thanks!
Boy that makes great sense. Should I use the same technique for my 4-6 woods? I’m a 79 yr old senior.
Hi Chris, I actually use a very low green tee, so it's the same swing. It's transformed my game and simplified my shot thoughts, and set up off the tee and fairway. Thank you for going through this again as it works so well.
Good explanation and instruction. This wasn't too wordy, nor is there too much offered to think about for the actual setup and swing.
This is the only video I have found that explains how to use 3 wood. Thanks a million Chris.

So glad I found your videos. Have never had hitting fairway woods explained , let alone explained so well! Thanks

Yes, unless you’re hitting a 1/2/3 iron

Thanks for the tip chris you make it so easy i will be trying this out tomorrow to use this club which i have not used for months due to having poor contact which i have not used for a while.
Just purchased the Sim2 max D 3 wood and this video is a good learning tool for me. I have never it a 3 wood so will be using this video for practice.
This promotes more consistency for sure.. Definitely gotta try these methods! Btw some tips to share: To adapt my setup and swing to the hills and lies on the course I do the following: 1. Great job Chris. Very simple swing thoughts to improve 3 wood shots. Thanks
Great tip and wonderful explanation which I'm going to practise to get back to my once good fairway 3 wood shot which has recently strangely gone.
The way you describe it Chris it just makes so much sense. I've been trying to sweep it away and inevitably it goes low and left. Ball too far forward and result exactly as you said. Thanks for this video 😊
I will try that tip for 3 wood. I use to hit it well till I had hip and knee surgery. I am all recovered now but struggling with 3 wood.
Great video. Good pace of explanation (i.e. not to fast not too slow) thank you for dumming it down with simple que and external feels👍
I have just recently took up golfing and Chris your videos have helped so much!!! I am no means any good yet but the effort is there lol ty sir for what you do
Great tips Chris, I’ve been struggling with 3 wood off the fairway and know the ball is too far forward in my stance 👍🏼👌
Excellent lesson and tips Chris. Will try it tomorrow during practice. Cheers from Hull, Massachusetts
Best explanation yet on hitting a 3 wood. Very helpful!
Can't wait to get out and put all these tips into action,
Thanks Carey simpler is always good when it comes to golf
Thanks Chris helpful video. I used to use the 3 wood as my driver effectively. Huge confidence with it and actually hit it often better off the fairway. However using driver now and lost my way. Also using hybrids so have opted for some lower loft hybrids to give a go as a 3 wood replacement essentially. Will see how it goes.
Excellent video, presentation, and correct advice on the 3w technique! This works.👍
Hello from Arizona. I just found your channel. You’re great. You have helped with driver. I have never been hitting so good. The fairway woods helps. Thank you Sir 👊🏼👍
Extremely easy to follow and understand golf lesson.
Thanks
I really enjoy hitting my fairway woods. It's important to spend time practicing with them. I'm looking forward to trying this on the range. Thank you.
Great video. So you should look a club head distance ahead of the ball whether you are hitting from a T or turf ?
Thanks Chris! This tip totally transferred my fair wood game. An instant success.
that was terrific! what a great instructor you are! And you swing is just gorgeous, love the perfect follow through! i can only dream of a swing like that! thanks!
This is exactly what I do and it works great! When using Driver I put the tee behind the ball in order to hit up on the ball. It absolutely works for me.
Makes a lot of sense. I'm struggling a little with my driver but can hit my 3 and 5 woods more consistently off the ground.
I had the two swing thing going with my 3 wood and the swing up move does creep into my fairway wood shots... spot on analysis. Thin fairway shots... drive me wild. lol I will give your tips a go. TY mh

Thanks a lot for your lesson Chris! It really helps me do better in my game. Wish you success every time brother 🥂
great video, I still haven't had a successful fairway wood hit off the deck but hopefully this will help. It's the most elusive shot for me.
couple of things ... good info here, and would include a discussion about dynamic lofts - 15* vs 7*. I'm assuming this is due to a different posting (decel) move and shaft action, so that even with a downward attack angle, the loft the ball sees is 8* higher. Best advice for the 3 Wood. Kudos
Brilliant video. Thanks to you Chris I’ve finally managed to hit my new sim2 3W off the mat…..next is the fairway!
Great video, I will definitely try this out. Thanks for the tip
Golf youtubers must have a daily conference, heard the same ball position advice off a tee vs the deck on another video yesterday. Went from consistently topping to consistently ball striking immediately! Thanks!
Love it! Glad the instruction is helping
Thank you for a great tutorial!!! Now I know why I could not hit my 3 wood, my weight was too much on my right side!!! and I teed my ball to high too! My poor 3 wood was standing in the corner for a long time! I am going to make him my best friend again!! Thank you for the tips!! 🥰⛳️🏌️♀️
Great informative video. Like it very much but the best part is your beautiful smooth and easy swing. It’s gorgeous
Thanks for posting some great info, will have to try in a couple days Thanks
What an excellent teacher.
I really enjoyed the way you delivered your instruction. Look forward to applying the technique!! Thank you from Richmond, Virginia
Thanks Will appreciate that
cant wait to give this a go i used to be great with fairway woods but struggle now
Great video👍 very good point, I'm so used to hitting up of a tee with the 3 wood, the few times I need to hit off the fairway I struggle to change that swing thought with 3wood. Think I'm changing my swing thoughts with 3wood. Cheers.
Love that idea. Will be trying it asap. 👍
Wel done. I am certainly going to experiment with this tip, next time on the range and on the fairway! Thanks, Dick
Agree with everything said here. I emphasize shifting more weight to the forward foot AND level shoulders NOT sloped like a driver tee shot.
Spot on I figure that out for myself not 100% of the fairway but getting there
Thanks for this information and I will put it into my golf game. I've been driving well but the 2nd shot needs work
Very well explained Chris, it makes sense to me. Something think about definitely. 3w is a weak club for me. Would love to use it more.
Concur with the approach.. always treat my 3wood with same thoughts
Terima kasih pelatihannya..saya akan mencobanya
The best Tip. Thank you so much Chis
Thanks I’m struggling with the 3 wood fairway shots I’m using my 5 hybrid better loft but not enough distance so frustrating
Love it. Tried and true this past few weeks. Thanks Chris!
Thank you sir I will work on it ! Great teaching job !
Absolute spot on tips!! Thank you very much.

Explained it very well and it worked for me my 3 wood is back in the bag 👍

Once again, very good instruction and excellent video quality...kudos!
Thanks

Maybe the ground crew should respect the trainers do there videos and stay away from that particular hole.
I try to think of the ball on a runway and then let the club go from the back to the front and it helps me keep it on track
Great advice Chris,Thank you.
Very good Chris!!!
Does this same concept work for hybrids? I struggle mightily with topped hybrid shots.
Same basic setup for long hybrids? Or should ball be further back in stance?
So logical so simple and very effective golfing advice Chris....will definitely be trying this next time I'm on the range.
I love my 3 wood off the tee, it's my go to club for most par 4's and tight par 5's. But off the fairway I am too inconsistent. My guess is ball position is too far forward off the deck. And possibly a little of me trying to help the ball up...... I'll give this a try!
Hope it helps
Thank you! Terrific lesson!
Yup. Last year I was hitting down on the ball slightly and crushing it. This season, been hitting up on it a tad too much and it went to hell.
Thanks very much Chris. Now I know why I'm so inconsistent with my woods. Great lesson. 😊
Chris, great video. Let's say you are doing all these things correctly, but are struggling to get the distance you're in search of.
