Catallena is quite a song! This is just my interpretation, but what gets me is on the surface it's such a quirky, vibrant mv but if you dig a little deeper, you'll find so much symbolism for self-worth in the kpop industry. The girls start as beautiful mermaids, but despite that, their "cost" keeps being discounted, until they're cheaper than all the other options. In the end they choose the cheapest options to eat, and cry over the loss of these beautiful creatures that no one found any worth in. There's more but in general the symbolism is so fascinating, and sad
Omg this. I sort of had the same idea about this floating in my head. Anyways the master mind behind Orange Caramel is pure genuis. Them and Crayon Pop are the legendary gg, at least for me
Supposedly, they're crying because they found their own self-worth. They wanted to so badly be like or impress the "octopus" (which is one of the more expensive sushi in Korea, even though many argue that a lot of cheaper fish actually taste better)... but just like the sushi they represent, they're just as good as the octopus. However, there are lots of other theories, one being how the girls as sushi keep getting devalued just like how women in kpop "lose their value" over time as they older. This was actually their last song (I think), so it makes that message quite ironic.

"Oh my god what is that on her head" is practically Orange Caramel's live stage concept. Crayon Pop too, come to think of it.
I feel like Orange Caramel is the original KPOP. Bright colors and fun catchy songs. Sometimes I hate this new Kpop and want to go back to the original Kpop cause it just makes me smile.

Lipstick’s MV being about wanting to get with a hot table tennis instructor by defeating an all-powerful table tennis witch is the most wonderfully ridiculous concept for an MV ever
I just realized, I never did give you the englis title ;-; The first song you watched in this block does have an english title! It’s called Shanghai Romance.
And of course, it’s not Orange Caramel without predebut pledis artists. The male in Shanghai romance is Minhyun from Nu’est!
Time for some random fun facts:
- Catallena actually had no english lyrics sung by the girls! (The only english is the male adlib going ‘Red Sun’ in the background)
-Catallena’s MV actually got banned in Korea due to it “devaluing Human Life” when they were in the packaging. The more you know

In Shanghai nights Minhyun is the guy she likes from Nu'est, he got the nickname Shanghai boy because of it
I'm still convinced that the fish/mermaid tail that comes of the washer in WJSN Chocome 'Hmph!' is a direct homage to 'Catallena' and an acknowledgement that Orange Caramel paved the way.

So in Bangkok City they all are dressed like Nana but in a super over the top way. In this one they're all dressed like Raina. It's not as over the top but then Raina was more restrained than Nana. I don't think they ever did a Lizzy themed MV.
"Catallena" only has those iconic yelps at the beginning in the dance practice and the live stages. You need to check out the dance practice for the song.
also not sure if you peeped the ‘Red Sun’ adlibs in the bg or not but Orange Caramel really out here hypnotising us just like Dreamcatcher 🙃⚰️

Shanghai Romance is one of my favourites. I think Raina is the main vocalist, but I like Lizzy's solo lines the most.
Shanghai Romance is special to me cause its written by Hee Chul of Super Junior and Minhyun of Nu’est is in it... well Ren cannot be in it because he will be mistaken as another member hahaha

there is a specific set of Lipstick outfit that I like the most which is denim jacket with mini teddy bears all over lol thats basically how I watched Lipstick for the first time and got hooked
Their songs bring me back to the days of the para para sakura craze back in the 90s. All that techno and disco was epic.
When the singer said, "I love you" in chinese at the end of the first song I was so thrown off.

You've possibly already discovered this, but that first mv is called Shanghai Romance, and that's Minhyun from NU'EST seated at the table in the beginning of the video and appearing throughout. He and JR from NU'EST also cameo in Bangkok City. And, of course, all of NU'EST appear in ORANGE CARAMEL's "Dashing Through the Snow in High Heels", and-- as a further NU'EST-ORANGE CARAMEL tie-in-- Ren dances to "Lipstick" every time he hears it. He's probably spent almost as much time dancing to "Lipstick" and other ORANGE CARAMEL hits on Korean TV as he has to NU'EST songs :D.
As your reactions for their videos seemed favourable and supportive (I saw you struggling not to cry over "Journey of NU'EST"), I thought you'd like to know :)

Talented and quircky as, of topic these girls meet with Gfriend pre debut, as seniors to teach the girls all about smiling, but yeah orange caramel is fun to listen too
the dance practices are worth a lookl. They are hilarious in places. also look them up on Immortal Songs. You'll be surprised at how good they really are. OMG, Lizzy had a solo caalled GOODBYE PMS. Life is not complete without it.

Another prime example of Pledis being the shittiest company when it comes to promoting their groups (especially their female ones). After school had so much potential and this subunit was so unique and experimental with their sound, they deserved so much more than being tossed aside for years before disbanding. Same thing happened with Pristin. Still not over it. You should totally check out the main group Afterschool though, they were on the same level as other girl groups in that era like T-ARA, 2NE1, 4Minute, F(x), SNSD, etc. Actually, Kahi (a former member) did a collab with Hyuna from 4Minute and Yuri (Soshi) and performed a cover of Womanizer by Britney Spears. It’s great.
On a slightly unrelated note, does the first part of the chorus from Lipstick sound just like the chorus from Kesha’s “Take it off” or is it just me? “There’s a place downtown, where the freaks all come around” sounds just like the first part of the chorus. Someone tell me I’m not losing my marbles here...😟
Maybe because I became interested in kpop during the time when after school was at the height of their popularity but pledis did a damn good job promoting them honestly,imo. They were literally everywhere - especially uee and lizzy . Im ashamed to admit this but... I was annoyed about it (I was young I was naive, a new kpop fan who didn't comprehend how magical girl groups could be - ) id say it wasn't until kahi left the group(and pledis) and the members started branching out more into other activities that promoting the group seemed to decline so much(like literally I swear they performed first love two years in a row at the end of the year shows - which like what?).
But sure as an orange caramel and after school fan I would of liked more out of their newer release but I wouldn't say it was terrible. On that note it would of been great to have like a formal last single (kinda like sistar and lonely) but pledis became what it is today and yeah. I feel in part because they didn't know what to do since the members were getting older and graduating and adding new members was becoming hassle( which, understandable)
@@krystenw.5928 Pledis has a track record for abandoning their groups once they’re out of their peak era. After school was well promoted around 2009-2012/13, but once their popularity decreased as new groups started to debut, the less Pledis gave a crap about them. After Kahi left in 2015, it was like Pledis couldn’t be bothered with the group anymore.They’re promoting the hell out of Seventeen right now which is great. I hope they keep getting this much attention from their company even well after their peak era. But Pristin deserved so much better. They had 2 actual comebacks and one subunit release. And then a hiatus for 2-3 years before Pledis disbands them? Wtf kind of company does that? I mean, I’m glad the girls knew to leave the company and sign with someone else who would give them more attention, but Pledis has always been a crappy company in my eyes, right up there with YG and SM.

I want for orange caramel to come back. I don't care they aren't cool like others groups. To me, what was important it was their fun and original vibe 😭 I miss them so bad.
