In terms of Sexiness, I feel like in Kpop, the “sexy” girl groups were popular in the early 2010s many girl group during that time did sexy. The problem is, not many groups can pull off sexy well and have it look seductive or empowering without looking like a cheap sell out. After School, Sistar, Miss A, Girls Day were few of the groups who did that well but many groups came out and just did sexy with skimpy outfits and grinding on the floor. So sexy groups faded out by mid 2010s and the public started embracing the cute innocent groups in response and after that influx came the Girl Crush that’s preferred now.

@@antha0321 I would definitely include them, although Secret ended up relying too much on the cutesy concept once one of their cute throwback songs blew up pretty big.

BANG! is the unofficial Pledis anthem. Seventeen did their own version on this in 17Project and pledis girls (pristin) did so too when they joined produce 101. After School usually performed this with a drumline (as you have seen snippets in the mv) as an intro before the actual song

Regarding the pole dancing on first love, you were right! They learned how to do it for this comeback and this song! I don't know if you noticed but the girls were wearing lots of tattoos which, some of them, were covering the bruises they got from practising so hard this choreography. This dance is considered one of the most difficult dances in kpop and still, they didn't get anything for it (like prizes on the music shows). The girls did a great job with this dance!
Besides that, you should check out live performances of BANG! because in one of them they did the drum part themselves. They also did a tap-dancing performance which is ICONIC and you should definitely watch!
(I'm really sorry if something is weird in the text but I had to look up some vocabulary because English is not my first language)

    Love that part.😂❤
They actually learned pole dance for 7 months before the comeback 'First Love'. They ended up with bruises on their legs and through all the promotions, some of them ended injured.

I am so happy that you have reacted to After School. I've been stanning them since their AH! days when they were still pretty much promoted as the Korean Pussycat Dolls. Their original leader Gahee/Kahee already graduated when First Love and Flashback was released but she has made a solid foundation for After School's performances. She also became a trainer in Produce series so you may have notice why Gahee got a little emotional when Gaeun auditioned at Produce 48. Gaeun debuted after Gahee left.
If you'd like to hear more of their vocals, you should check out Because of You. Also please watch the live performance of First Love, it was really enlightening.

As far as I know, Afterschool hasn’t formally disbanded but they haven’t been active since like 2014. You should check out their sub-unit Orange Caramel.
If there’s one thing I’ll give Pledis is they really know how to train idols. Every single group they’ve come out with have very talented well rounded idols who are strong singers, dancers, and know how to perform. I’m pretty sure IZ*One and Fromis 9 are also trained by Pledis. Its too bad, they never grasped how to properly manage their groups. In After School’s case, I believe it’s similar to Nu’est where Pledis really tried to push them globally and sent them off to promote on Japan for way too long. After School was a popular group but they weren’t top top tier so Pledis didn’t have enough money to support their own groups and kind of shelved After School the same way they did Nu’est. Frankly I was hoping Pledis would’ve revived the group after Kaeun finished PD48, but they didn’t and I’m pretty sure all members but Nana (whos been most active but as an actress) has left the company.

That's not what happened to After School and it's a problem that has come about because fans think of groups as a homogeneous entity rather than a collection of individuals who have their own paths they want to tread, Pledis didn't stop promoting After School because of lack of money, they stopped promoting because too many of the members wanted to do other things; five things happened in 2014 that I know of now show this quite clearly, firstly Jooyeon left AS to purse acting, secondly Uee gave an interview where she outright said she thought she's graduate soon to do acting full time and she was the most popular member at the time and basically the "Suzy" of AS and if you look at her resume she does a lot of acting from this time and E-Young gave an interview about a year ago about how she formed her band and she said that in 2014 she went to her CEO and asked if she could form a band and that's how it came together, Raina started her solo career and Nana had two variety shows she was on then finally got her big acting break in China in early 2015, the members who when they weren't busy were doing the show After School's Beauty Bible at the time, there was no dungeon and Pledis wasn't stopping them from lack of money they were just at a point in their career where they wanted to pursue their own goals, however that does have a downside because not all members get the same opportunities like Jungha and Kaeun but that happens with every group unfortunately, for the most part they were very busy just not as a group.
When you say Pledis doesn't know how to "properly manage them" I think you are making the mistake that After School is the one and only thing Pledis is managing, what you may not know is that the members of AS don't have a "group contract" with Pledis they have an "individual contract" which means that Pledis has an obligation to manage their "individual careers" over the group's career, the member's wishes come first and if that means AS don't have time for a comeback then AS doesn't have a comeback which sucks for us fans.

Have you noticed the cute little girl in the first part and end part of Bang!? She's Xiyeon of PRISTIN. She's been a trainee of Pledis for 11 years before debuting. Pledis is really sh*t for treating their talented and beautiful girl groups bad. Smh

"BANG" ...This song is a great classic among Pledis artists, SEVENTEEN made their own version and later Pristin (female group) made their own version, which is otherwise very very good, I recommend that you see it from their mini concert dated 20160910 (this one became famous because the girls auditioned with this arrangement on the show "Produce 101")

Bang for someone who is not that familiar with the quirkiness of 2nd gen kpop is an experience lol, but I love it.
Fun fact: one of the little girls who are dancing in the beginning of the MV is Park Siyeon, who was like 10 at the time, and 6 years later rearranged the song for the Pledis trainees performance on Produce 101. Those Pledis trainees would then be a part of Pristin and we all know how that turned out :( She's an actress now though!
First Love's choreography is insane, and the fact that they did it at music shows too! like they brought out the poles and everything!! When I see people making "hardest dances in kpop" compilation videos or lists and they don't include this I know they really didn't do much research beyond new and popular groups cause how can you watch this and not think it deserves a (high) spot on the list?
Song wise, Flashback is my favorite of the three, though I like all of them there's just something about that "b-b-b-boy I miss you baby oh oh oh" I love it. And the part at 22:56 where they all pose one by one??? that's so iconic
It's very understandable how gay you feel lol I feel the same thing, there's one member especially that just takes my breath away whenever I look at her. She's the one at 9:20 her name is Nana and she's actually won that "most beautiful faces in the world" thing a few times.
I miss girl groups doing sexy concepts like After School, Miss A, Sistar, Girls Day, Stellar and others did... like of course I don't mind the sexy aspects of it but what I miss the most is that type of music, I really liked it.
Ps: one of After School's subunits, Orange Caramel is, dare I say, the best subunit in kpop. (and this is coming from someone whose two favorite groups have subunits, aka SNSD TaeTiSeo and RV Irene and Seulgi). They're songs and concepts are /really/ different from After School's and, in my opinion, they have one of the best MV's I've seen in kpop (My Copycat). I think you would enjoy them.
Ps2: After watching Produce 48, would you be open to watch the first season of Produce 101? I'd love to see your reactions to it :)
Ps3: it is always acceptable to want to kick Pledis in the ball

Ah, After School was the group that made me interested in all the succeeding Pledis groups because of how powerful and iconic they were back in the day. I think I can attribute that power they hold to Kahi, their leader. Their song Because of You is still one of my top songs to sing at a karaoke lol I definitely recommend listening to that and their ballads as well. Also, I'm glad we as the human race collectively agree that Pledis needs a swift and painful kick in the balls.

No joke, Nana (9:17 - 9:26 and 16:41 - 16:48) was my "first love" in kpop. Before I even realized I wasn't straight, I was SO attracted to her oh my gosh... Even seeing her now in these mvs, my poor heart LOL. But I agree with everything you said; I loved After School for their unlimited talent, confidence, and mature sexiness. I wanted to BE them, to have that empowering aura that they gave off, to strut confidently and own it. Maybe someday xD

Yeah Bang! is one of my all-time fave kpop songs. It's interesting to see someone catch up on old songs and like them, too :D I remember at the time I had been into kpop a few years already but just figured out that I could watch live performances on YT (I dunno if it's more obvious now how easy it is to see live perfs for newer kpop fans, but it wasn't super obvious back in 2009 imo), and I could not get enough of watching them live.

    Some info about AfterSchool,
This was Pledis’s first ever group
They were formed to be the Korean version of The Pussycat Dolls. They debuted with the song Ah! with 5 members.
They also introduced the graduation concept, which was most popular in JPop groups at the time with the 48 Family.
Another group with the same graduation concept is 9 Muses. And secretly T-Ara and RaNia too as they struggle to keep their lineup together.
They were the opening act for the Pussycat Dolls for their concert in Korea.
At their peak they had 9 members, but was very short lived lasting only a few months and they ever only promoted as an octet. In total they had 11 total members. Currently they only have 1 member remaining. It was also mentioned that the members had all went their separate ways but the group isn’t disbanding.
They have 3 subunits Orange Caramel, AS Red & AS Blue. AS R & B ‘s lineups were chosen by fan votes.
Orange caramel consists of all 3 of their 3rd Gen members. They were formed to show a cute image as Afterschool’s image was more sexy and they wanted to show another side to them.

AAAHHHHHHH OMG I SCREAMED WHEN I FOUND THIS!!! I also requested for this but only here in TH-cam.
I was waiting for you to speak in the first minute of Bang but it was pure silence lol.
    Just want to share too:
    1. An intro stage to Bang is a drum line performance, "Let's Do It" and they killed that shit! They learned that only in a matter of months before the comeback.
    2. They also did tap dance, "Let's Step Up", as an intro stage for their comeback single "Shampoo". A must watch too.
    3. The gay-est MV you will ever see is their "Because Of You" MV (most successful comeback of After School). A must watch again!
And I agree with you, they really had that "powerful" image so much that even their sunbae groups were intimidated by them. Especially when Kahi, their former leader, was still in the group. She was one of the coaches in Produce 101.
I know you don't usually watch live stages but their live stages are so powerful too :(
Sorry I had so much to say lol.

thank you so much for reacting to After School!! Theyre absolute icons but were unforunatley paid dust by their company and international stans. They're well known in Korea but internationall not many kpop fans, especially newer ones, don't know about these girls! Your points about these girls being sexy for the sake of empowerment over anything else couldn't be more true! AS kind of started the sexy trend when the debuted in 2009 but it never felt like they did it just for the sake to get male fans, if anything their core fandom was mainly women for the longest time! Pledis definetly forced the performance aspect on the girls a bit (especially w/ First Love and the pole dancing) but they've always been super into their concept and have prided themselves on the image they put out, which includes choreo, outfits, lyrics, etc. As a fan of them I just want to say thank you again for reacting!! Ill be sure to share your video on twitter for other playgirlz/playboyz to watch!!

From what I’ve seen, Gaeun is focusing on acting now and does music as a side gig. She released “Remember You” when she left Pledis in 2019. It’s basically a goodbye to the idol life she had dreamed of. It’s not fair that she wasn’t acknowledged, but everything happens for a reason. After pd48 I told myself that I would support her no matter what. She’s still young so she can debut, but most likely as a soloist. It would be dope to her and other idols in their mid to late 20’s debut in a group that focuses on sultry/elegance/femme aesthetics.

After School was the first girl group I ever stanned because of their strong and powerful image. They've been unapologetically sexy since their debut with Ah (which made waves at the time because of their "scandalous" outfits) but always in a confident, female empowerment way. I think a big reason for this is that Kahi, their ex-leader, was actually an active part in deciding their concepts and artistic direction. She had a very dtrong personality, was already 26 (27 ?) when she debuted with After School and she had extensive experience in the industry as a backup dancer. So you have a strong, confident and experienced woman in the decision-making process and you get After School.
But Kahi was so instrumental to AS that it left a big hole to fill in the group when she left. She was both an important vocalist and rapper, the core of their powerful performance AND a leader with influence over Pledis' management. She got things done and kept the group cohesive. After she left, no one else really could fill her shoes, Pledis started prioritizing other things like overseas promotions and the newly debuted Nu'est (but we know how that ended up..) and the AS members started doing more individual activities which always leaves the less popular members in the dungeon.

@@JampongJuicy oh...sorry about that misunderstanding, you never specified who mistreated the girls and you didnt even previously mentioned Mnet so given the context of the video i.e. the person in the video mentioning Pledis mistreating thier girl groups and also delusional Pledis artists' stan frequently say Pledis mistreats their girl groups, it sounded like you were agreeing with those delusional Pledis artists' stan and the girl in this video.

This vid is from 2010, you're right... but some of this vids were uploaded with really poor quality for some reason. Like 2PM's song "Again" was uploaded with terrible quality and they were a huge group back then from JYP. I dunno if sometimes posting vids on TH-cam wasn't taken that seriously or what, like they didn't expect kpop to blow up because of YT as much as it did?

Yes the girls learned pole dances for First Love. And yes After School is a full package, they have one of the strongest vocalists in the industry ever, they are all visuals, Nana and UEE were there to prove people what beautiful is, they have dance skills, synchronized and hard af, they have greatest concept ever and lowkey they also had very strong rap line. I am always mad at Pledis for ruining After School's members, they have the potential to become as famous as GG. Their sub-unit Orange Caramel was also so unique and well-known and slayed. The more I see people love them, the more I feel so sad. So many talented girls dedicate so much for their dream, and Pledis ruined it all!!!
Promise me you will check out more from After School, I recommend Because of You. That's forever my favorite song from Kpop, ever! SVT vocal team used to officially cover it in their early debut era, and NU'EST did to, in their Produce 101 SS2 audition. And talking about Seventeen and NU'EST makes me be more mad at Pledis. That company treats stars like rubbish and you know what I mean.
I really hope you like other artists from Pledis too, Bumzu (yes that genius composer who helps compose many SVT songs from the beginning) and Raina (the vocalist who hits high notes in all 3 songs Bang, First Love, Flashback) all have their solo songs and those songs worth a try. Also I believe you should check out NU'EST, they have received many mistreatment from Pledis, overcome many hard times, learned to make their own songs, went to Produce 101 desperately to avoid their disbandment, yet many people are still sleeping on their talents.
Seungkwan said NU'EST and Seventeen is a family a month ago. And back then After School members endorsed their juniors a lot, as well as Pristin got endorsed from their seniors. I can't belive artists from that shitty company are all so talented, unique, hard-working and all have golden heart and yet that company is, I guess you know what I mean.

I really miss sexy concept :/ and yes the shift of sexy concept is so sad.. I‘m really sad about everything happening in the kpop industry with concepts etc. When I got into KPOP in 2014 I was so into girl groups! AOA, SISTAR, BESTie, EXID etc. but First Love is still one of my favorite songs till this day, I don‘t know if you reacted to Girl‘s Day yet but I really recommend Something it‘s really sexy but the beat is really addicting and it‘s definitely my favorite girl group song ever made

Most of them look tall model like than most of the girl group&few are older&stunning. U can notice theres missing&adding member. I wish these (missA, 4minute etc) was one of those group that can stay long like GG. AOA probably the other sexy group but not all have the provocative look in their eyes.

  • @AmigaQ08

After School is the best girl group ever came to Kpop, fight me!! They're the concept queens. They've learnt a different kind of dance every comeback. For pole dancing they've trained for 6 months and even Lizzy broke her leg in the process and couldn't join comeback activities. They've learnt drums for bang did marching band dance, model walking, pole dancing, tap dancing, hiphop, street dance ..etc.Their leader Kahi is still one of the most respected dancer in Kpop and has been a trainer for PRODUCE series. For their sub-unit Orange Caramel they even had a concept totally opposite to AS concept which is still unrivaled in Kpop.Raina is one of the best female vocalists among girl groups. Yet, pledis played them dirty. They literally made pledis what it is now. Their last Korean comeback is First Love after that they were active in Japan for a short time but later because they never got any schedules or comebacks all the girls left once their contract ended except for Nana. After School never disbanded as they have a graduation system and all members are considered graduated.so now there's only Nana in After School but she's only acting and modeling now. (she's a supermodel)

he had it coming. In the second gen a lot of guys who had it coming ended up being destroyed. Well not Abracadabra. She wanted his job. In first love they suffered horribly to learn that skill. Lizzy never got to perform it because she broke a leg. Raina hurt her wrist too and only went up the pole once that I know of. That's her with the high note. She does that. Check out the subunit After School Red. They only did one song. Oh yeah. Nana entered the list at number two and then got number one several years running and is always on it. 100 most beautiful faces in the world. I think only one member is still with Pledis Oh yeah, for the Band promotions they became world class tap dancers and a world class drum line. from the moment I saw the thumbnail I was waiting for you to hit Raina's high note.

afterschool, much like 9muses, is one of the big tragedies of kpop. there are plenty of in depth videos that explain what went wrong and where and who’s to blame, but to simply say it: the company fucked up. it’s absolutely devastating because their discography is a pure goldmine and you can’t go one week on kpop stan twitter without at least one person wistfully remembering afterschool, but all that potential and talent went to waste because of incompetent companies, lack of funds or sheer misfortune.
