Orange Caramel were TITANS for a subunit. Like, their styling on stages was top tier, especially the Catallena era was very iconic for that (if you're curious look up their Catallena stages - their ketchup-mustard-fries dresses were ICONIC). In general Catallena was a huge meme in the kpop fandom at the time - the stages were exteemy fun, with the members a lot of the time just straight up screaming the intro jdbfjdbc. I really miss this wackiness from kpop these days - for me the wjsn chocome has some of these vibes. Plus suju always does some wacky stuff as a prerelease or as a bonus (fun fact - they have a whole subunit decidated to trot music, unfortunately now it's inactive though). Also!! Leo (from vixx) will be coming back with a 3rd mini album on the 23rd!!! I'm very happy and I think since he's your bias it's gonna be fun :D
Another fun fact is that many of Catallena's outfits were real food, in one setting they use Mochi and Gummies as hair bands, in another they used glasses of juice on their heads
we need the quirky concept back in kpop like can the kids stop doing the very overdone retro and girl crush concepts, lets be weird and fun and slayful?
One of the things that I always found cool with Orange Caramel is that Nana is in this sub-unit. Nana is considered one of top visuals in Kpop 2nd gen and history in general! Normally, you wouldn't put the 'breadwinner' of the group and the face of the group, in a sub-unit with this kind of concept I love that she accepted to scream on stage and were those weird and quirky outfits! For newer fans, Imagine Irene doing this kind of concept... I can't imagine it ahahaah
You're right but Nana wasn't the face of the group yet when Orange Caramel debuted. Uee and Kahi were the most popular and the most well known by the general public. Nana was recognized for her visuals but that was basically all at that point. Orange Caramel did a lot for her initial popularity honestly. And then when Kahi left, Nana's role in the group got more important and she correspondingly grew even in popularity til she became the face of the group.
WJSN Chocome and Oh My Girl Banhana subunits are the closest to OC recently, Crayon Pop were the other big quirky concept group back in the day, they were super fun! If you want to watch any more Orange Caramel mvs, the Korean ones that you missed are Gangnam Avenue, Abing Abing, Bangkok City and A~ing. You say they were aimed at an older audience but Orange Caramel were hugely popular with young kpop fans, so much so that they later eclipsed After School's popularity which is very rare for a subunit
Random bits of trivia: Shanghai Romance was written by Heechul from Super Junior. The love interest and the rival in the wedding dress were played by the same model. Catalina also had a cross dresser (the octopus/gangster are the same person). In the where's Waldo scenes Seventeen, Nuest, and Pristin are also dancing in costumes. It's fun trying to find them all. Their concept and MVs are just so fun. 😆
Most successful sub-unit ever! Their commercial success was up there with their original group After School. There is one live performance of Lipstick that has the LOUDEST Music Bank Fanchant I had heard until then. They chant each members name with their individual characteristic for like a minute straight. Those stans were dedicated. 😭
I miss the times when we had trot-pop in kpop. Shanghai Romance is one of my favorite gg songs in kpop. And a fun fact: The lyrics of Shanghai Romance are written by Heechul.
This has just made me realise how much you would enjoy Crayon Pop omg- take everything fun and quirky about Orange Caramel and times it by 100 and you get them aslhfsos I can't name a girl group that has done anything as weird as making a Power rangers and Sailor Moon combined mv
Its a shame we've lost the quirky concept in kpop, as well as true sexy concepts by adults and soft feminine concepts. The lack of all three is honestly whats distanced me from more recent kpop. Im so hsppy you enjoyed Orange Caramel! They are honestly so damn fun
Orange Caramel is like a mix between the Korean trot genre, pop culture (and regular culture?) parody, and club music. They're totally wild and I can just imagine going oAff to these songs at a gay club in Itaewon. I can understand not knowing when you would actually choose to listen to them again -- they have a very blaring, brassy sound -- but god if I don't get so hype when Lipstick or Aing♡ comes on. Also great OST for cleaning your apartment/house, although it might take longer from all the dancing you'll be doing as you go. If you react to them again, I definitely recommend Bangkok City and Aing♡!!
I'm so happy you got the chance to react to Orange Caramel 🍊. Their music is just so fun and light to listen to. It always a good way to bright up your mood when you are feeling down or just have a boring day. You are absolutely right. We need more variety in kpop nowadays. Sometimes I just don't want to have a darker concept in every song. Anyways, thank you for this reaction. 🥰💜
I remember Magic Girl being one of my first kpop songs that I heard, and it was on repeat for so long after that. Definitely captured exactly why kpop is different from other music genres, absolutely love it.
Catallena has a sampled Punjabi song in it which they use the lyrics "Jutti meri oy oy oy, paula mera oy oy oy" which I find absolutely amazing. Gives it a different flare compared to other songs in my opinion! Orange Caramel are one of my ultimate groups because their songs are just so fun and make you dance.
I’d be really happy if you can react to Secret ! They were my favorite group for a while , I recommend their strong and sexy side (because of your likings) Poison , Magic , I’m in love , Madonna , Talk that. But If you want to react to their funny or bright side , there’s Starlight Moonlight, Shy boy , YooHoo and I do I do. Btw You should also react to Jun Hyoseong’s discography ( Secret’s member) , I promise you won’t be disappointed. She was one of the most famous female soloist ,that was member of a kpop group, at the time!
I wasn't into kpop when this sub unit was active but I love their music so much I wish some other kpop group from this era did this type of quirky camp concept again
man, everything's perfect about catallena: the song, the video, the sheer joy you can feel of them performing. It's such a top-tier k-pop song, I can't.
I feel like Red Velvet is one of the only current korean girl group (at least their older songs and their Red songs) to give off that quirkiness and weirdness (like borderline ridiculous energy) orange caramel did back then, although maybe not as pushed
In my opinion, in modern k-pop, the closest group to Orange Caramel is VIVIZ. And not only by the number of participants, but also by merry trick. Of course, VIVIZ has a lot of serious songs, and they don't try to copy Caramels. But, there is definitely something close. During the time of GFriend, the girls from VIVIZ performed Сatallena of Caramels in a very funny way.
Ugh Pledis really messed up big time with OC. Their live stages were so good! Especially for Catallena. They had burger dresses, and juice cups as hats. My personal favourite would have to be the one where they dressed up as Chun Li for a Shanghai Romance stage
I really miss Orange Caramel, their songs, concepts and MV's were so much fun and unique, sadly they can't comeback for many many reasons 😭😭. I think Crayon Pop tried to follow the same path but it didn't work for them for the long run.
I miss concepts like this. It's what makes kpop kpop if you know what I mean. That's why I love WJSN Chocome's Super Yuppers. It's so reminiscing of these days.
Before orange caramel, there is Crayon Pop who wear weird outfit, superhero outfit with disco vibe with their hit Bar bar bar and Fm! Then there is Orange Caramel, a unit of After school, when this unit was created, Orange caramel became more famous than After school! Magic girl's outfit & choreo was cover by boysband like Super junior, U-kiss they parody the outfit and choreo, it was a huge hit in South Korea but international fans in that time didn't like it, find it childish but lol they became fans of Orange Caramel with Catallena
Fun fact: The "Catallena" MV was banned from Korean broadcast because the video "denigrated the value of human life." For some reason, Jo Se-ho was doing cameo in girl group videos this era. With regard to "My Copycat," he and Nana were both on the reality/variety show Roommates (season 2) - in which a bunch of celebrities of different ages from different fields all lived together in a house. Jo Se-ho also appeared in Fiestar's "Apple Pie" music video after he was paired up with Cao Lu on "We Got Married." For more Orange Caramel fun, check out the best Baskin Robbins ad ever - "Abing Abing." See here: th-cam.com/video/BmjDyCF87dE/w-d-xo.html Also, they did a collaboration with Cho Young-soo called "Funny Hunny" with a fun MV: th-cam.com/video/8jZOWNNEzUQ/w-d-xo.html Since you like trot, know that Lizzy had a solo trot song, "Not an Easy Girl" with a pretty cool MV that you might enjoy. See here: th-cam.com/video/ipouIsX1phI/w-d-xo.html
My favorite are Shanghai love, A-ing i recomend you to watch A-ing it's cute and has Little Red Riding Hood's concept, i love Copycat, Lipstick and i like Magic girl. Before her, watch Crayon Pop, it was Crayon pop who introduce weird fun concept. There is now WJSN Chocome with hmph, it reminds Orange Caramel's concept and sound
if you wanna go wacky and quirky, are you willing to try the legendary male duo, norazo? superman, shower, cider, and mackerel can be a good recommendation. some of them sadly don't really have official music video on youtube due to how old they are (especially superman and mackerel). be warned, some of their MV concepts are even... more unique than orange caramel dreamcatcher especially likes cider.

Have you ever reacted to Crayon Pop? They're also another group that's not quite like mainstream Kpop.
aing is their best song! please dont leave it out

yes i agree 😭
i think we all agree
yessssss
Momoland kept a quirky concept but everyone likes to pretend they don’t exists so 🤓
@@ajmikula2888 many groups actually :( but i think they meant currently, like 4th gen, not 3rd gen

It can only be said that their style is unique. No one can imitate

their stages, especially for Catallena! If you have the time, watch them. There're even stage-mixes :-)

orange caramel are so unique omg
also some quirky songs like these are crayon pop's bar bar bar and ioi's very very very !!!
My favourite girl group and the first K-pop group that I Stan.
Yay! Finally! You can also take a look at the legendary intros of catallena. There's even compilations with just the intro.
Surprisingly, a lot of Orange Caramel songs were made by GFriend's main producers from their early years.
Shanghai Romance, Magic Girl & A-ing They are one of my favorites and they have very nice songs in their discography.
I remember Magic Girl being one of my first kpop songs that I heard, and it was on repeat for so long after that. Definitely captured exactly why kpop is different from other music genres, absolutely love it.

Closest thing to orange caramel, probably be WJSN sub unit Chocome.
If you are interested in such concepts there was a group called CRAYON POP and they have similar things
another fun game: find seventeen members in My Copycat MV 😂
U NEED to react to Catallena live performance compilation please
it was kind of funny to think that most of these songs were made by the same exact people who made early GFriend's hits
뮤직비디오는 코미디가 너무 많이 들어 그녀들의 매력을 제대로 살리진 못한거 같다.
그녀들의 실제 공연 영상을 보는게 훨씬 그녀들이 매력적이다.
Omggg Bangkok City tho..
Def crayon pop next
AHAHAHA. I miss After School/Orange Caramel. ._.
The closest that we have to OC is WJSN Chocome, which is Luda, Yeoreum, Soobin, and Dayoung.
