It looks perfect on you! 1000% agree with the sizing, especially on outerwear. Many people size way too small and I think part of it is a leftover from the early 2010s slim fit minimalist trend. For anyone who happens to be very small and slim that might work, but if not it is nice to be able to raise your arms and button the top button.
I have two deck jackets from BronsonMFG, Olive and Khaki. But every time I see this jacket I get an urge to buy it haha it's so awsome. Congratulations on that pick brother 👊
Just picked up the new black/black version after wanting to get one for a while following your review. It sold out in seconds from Ironheart! Cheers for the great reviews.
Hi Cameron. Really appreciate your reviews. They’ve helped me make quite a few purchases. I managed to pick up a IH N1 Deck in black recently in large. I tried on the medium and although I could get it on even with a jumper and t shirt layered it was quite restrictive. I couldn’t get full range of movement in the arms and looked like I was impersonating a duck when I put my arms in the pockets. The guys at Rivet and Hide also agreed on the large after spending way too much time in the shop with indecision (great fellas and very patient). I know on many forums they suggest just taking the tighter smaller size. I wondered what your thoughts might be. I’m 5”10 (on a good day) and about 78kg. I have pretty broad shoulders and 40-41” chest. The large certainly feels better in practical terms but as it’s just one of my jackets in a collection , would you just advice me to bite the bullet and get the smaller version, as it would be worn in rotation through the winter and I have other jackets which I could layer heavy fleeces under. I guess I’m just looking for some assurance I’ve made the right decision. As your aware these are now sold out in the UK however I can still get a hold of the medium and resell the large I’m sure without loosing to much. Any advice would be very much appreciated.
Very great jacket. Worn for the first time today. Wore the collar up at 5 degrees and enjoyed the warmth. A bit like being hugged by a sheep and a little alpaca. All in all, a great jacket that also feels very high quality
I ordered the large I same height approximately and 172lbs. Tried the medium on and I couldn’t move my arms fully which seems ridiculous in any form of clothing. I do t think these will stretch either.
I hear your reasons for preferring this one to the RMCs but I love the look of the RMCs'. I will be trying on a bunch of these N-1s soon and hopefully find one that fits me.
Cameron, just found your channel, really enjoyed the video. If I'm not mistaken, the Iron Heart N1 has a 80% poly 20% alpaca pile vs the Real McCoy 100% alpaca pile lining. Curious to hear your thoughts on the warmth / softness difference between the two jackets on that lining. Also interested in hearing if you preferred the alpaca fur lining, or found the quilted lining to be preferred for the arms. The IH one also has a windbreaker lining built into the jacket that isn't original to the contracted design, so of course the Real McCoy doesn't have that... I know you don't have your RMC one anymore, but curious if you noticed any difference in wind penetration of the jackets as well. Come April or so, It'd be super interesting to hear your thoughts after having it for several of the colder winter months. Cheers!
Hey Nathan, welcome, good to have you. You are correct about the lining and the makeup of the N1. Personally I found the Alpaca lining on the RMC a little scratchy through the arms. But It's hard to compare them both as the RMC was sized like a medium so I couldn't really layer and had to wear t-shirts, whereas the IH I haven't really worn it with just a t-shirt. I have found the quilted lining (obviously) feel smooth, maybe not as warm right off the bat as the fur but still very comfortable. Sadly, i can't really remember or comment on the wind breaking of the RMC, I do know I was always so warm in it! Although not to contract I find the IH one better for me, though I suspect it is purely down to the sizing.
Hey! I think Large will be spot on. For me, i only wear this when it is super cold, so ill be wearing a warm pullover or flannel and this just fits perfectly over it.
Great review. The jacket looks nice on you! IH just excel at making Japanese quality clothing with a cut that looks flattering on western body types. They’re second to none at that. 🙏🏽
Any feedback/comments from folks in the US? In the Midwest, -2C is actually a mild winter. A cold winter over here hits lows around-10C (let’s not even talk about the wind chill). Stumbled upon this channel, lovely jacket!
I am looking to get this jacket, what do you think about the new brown color coming soon, its similar to the duck canvas color but just darker, I have too many black leather jacket so I want to try something different
I chose the black because it goes with pretty much anything. I think if i ever got another it would be the khaki or the olive. But that's just me. They all are fantastic
I recently purchased second hand a Deck jacket from the Japanese company UES. It’s a well made product but the big difference is the lining. It’s 75% acrylic and 25% cotton ..no comparison to the Alpaca Iron Heart lining. The outer shell is canvas heavyweight and the styling is well done. Pockets are perfectly placed. I’m all about natural fibers and that Iron Heart looks great. Thanks for posting.
@@TheSukhbirgrewal It was nicely styled and well made. I don’t know where you live and how cold it gets but I live in the northeast and it worked well..I have since sold it off and am going with 100% wool products..
Hi Cameron, thanks for the great review of the IH N1 deck jacket. I’ve just ordered the same jacket, size L in khaki. We must be a similar size, I’m a size 3 in UES flannels and a L in IH UH flannels. I had an IH N1 vest which was nice and solid, built like a tank, but I never wore it, so I sold it on. Although the IH N1 jacket is hardly cheap, it’s still £622 from IHUK, which I’m surprised at as everything else seems to be spiralling up in price at the moment. So if you want a different colour IH N1 jacket it might be a good time? Merry Christmas 🎉and thanks for the great review 😊
Hi bud. I just managed to get the N1 deck in large and I’m now wondering about size. Just wondered what your dimensions might be? I’m 5’10” , 78kg with 40-41” chest. The medium was tight and I had limited movement and my arms looked like I was impersonating a duck when I put them in the pockets. Just wondered what your experience was?
How cold of weather have you worn the jacket in? Is -2 about as cold as it gets there? Just curious as I live in Canada and -2 is a pretty nice day in winter, curious if this jacket is warm enough
Hey Cameron, love your content I'm 5'9 165 and went with a medium. Quick question how do you store this? with cedar? and if you've cleaned it yet how did you dry clean/steam?
Hey! tbh I store it like any other coat, either in my wardrobe or on the coat rack. I probably should have taken more care as i've already shattered a large button when it got caught closing the closet door. Though IH sent me spares. Not ha da wash yet either and it is holding up nicely!
Great point about jacket sizing. So often size chart = fit guide. But not when you want a winter coat! Also good advice for when you want to wear a hoodie under a denim jacket - could be a reason to size up. Question for you- I have the Real McCoy's N1 Vest. Agree about the pockets btw. I felt the Alpaca lining was somewhat stiff, not as soft as I expected. Is the IH N1 Alpaca softer than the Real McCoys? Is it something you even noticed?
Hey Erick, I believe it is softer than the RMC. I found the RMC lining a little scratchy but mainly that was it was because it was through the sleeves and the size was a little smaller so i wore it with t-shirt. So it was on my skin. Hope that helps?
Hi Cameron, I watched your RMC and IH deck jacket videos and the one question I have is do you think the RMC jacket was warmer given the full wool lining through the sleeves? Some posts have also speculated that RMC might have a more substantial wool lining? Thanks in advance. Tyler
Hi Tyler, You could make that argument but the insulation on the IH was warm enough for me. I think the RMC can be a bit 'scratchy' too. I highly suggest trying them on purely for the fit as the RMC just did not work for me proportion wise. The IH is just perfect.
I bought the SPL (Special Limited) version of the Real McCoy's Deck Jacket. A bit more pricey than the regular version. It comes in both Navy and Khaki and the hand warmer pockets are where I think you'd like.
Great review! Just bought the Melton Wool CPO Shirt from Iron Heart (my first purchase) and happy I went with Large. Waiting for it to come in the mail. Out of curiosity for fit on this N1, what are your measurements (height etc) thanks!
Not sure if this will help you but I'm 5'9" 155lbs and I bought the IH deck jacket in medium. It fits me well with some room for layering. I probably could have gone with a small but without the room for layering. All of my IH shirts are also medium so I find that my IH size is consistent in tops/outerwear.
@@journeymanedc thanks for this! I think this confirms it for me as well. I checked all the measurements on the site and I think mediums would fit me in some shirts, but I think for certain jackets Large may be better for layering for my frame. I'm closer to 5'10'' 180
Sounds like you got it sorted lads. Nice one. For the record I've about 6ft and 80kg. So i think the medium for you as Alex has said is a good idea! Cheers!
I wonder if Iron Heart has changed their whipcord material with this new jacket. I have an older IH black N1 deck vest and it now has a noticeably green tinge to it's faded color.
@@CameronO No but I saw that post too just recently. I have an older black vest and the whipcord looks black in low light conditions but has a greenish tinge throughout under normal sunlight. However, I think I read somewhere on the IH forum that there may be a new source of the black whipcord. I just received the black N1 from Division Rd and will compare them tomorrow.
Just got mine. Awesome jacket. My only complaint is that the handwarmer pockets should be deeper. Can’t get my hands in there all the way unless I make a fist
Of course looks and feel are sometimes two different things…..the large still looks small….for me oversized is the way to go. Especially if it’s going to be use for its intended purpose….yes it’s warm but still not enough for more extreme conditions. So I go oversize to make even more functional to accommodate thicker sweaters.
Hi Cameron! Seeing your channel for the first time. Really great review on a great looking jacket. quick question: in your opinion, assuming you are only wearing a t-shirt inside and the N1, what temperature do you think you can withstand during winter? Do you reckon you can wear only a t-shirt with the N1 when outside is 5 degrees Celsius? Many thanks.
Hey Marvin, thanks for stopping by. For me 5 with just a t-shirt is on the limit i think. Depends if it is windy, then it might be a bit light. As it is also quite hefty i find cold/wind can get underneath on cold days so i tuck my t-shirt in sometimes.
Great video! How does the whipcord fabric compare to the Jungle Cloth on the Real Mccoy's Jacket? Which fabric do you think is tougher, and which do you think is more water-resistant?
Hey Saumil, without the RMC in front of me it's hard to compare. Though from memory it was a tough piece of cloth! Probably tougher than the IH to be honest. But both are so durable it is hard to choose one that is superior.
Hi Cameron, love the video as usual. Jacket looks incredible. I'm also tossing up between tan and black leaning towards black. I was wondering, have you had to wash it yet? Wonder if it has any special requirements.
Hey Eric, I've not had to wash it yet. Not spilt anything on it and they hold up amazingly well through the elements. You won't need to wash for a good couple of seasons i would say.
Hi Cameron, Nice and detailed review for this jacket. I just recently bought my first N1 jacket same color as yours..How do you maintain/clean this jacket? #IH
Hey Cameron - big fan of the channel! I’ve made a few direct purchases as a result. I’m now thinking about an iron heart N1 this year. I’m in Dublin so probably a similar climate. Is the jacket too warm to get regular use throughout the winter? The one I like the look of is the oiled one which is apparently a touch warmer too.
Hey Keagan, thanks for watching! So I found I wore it quite a bit over the winter and even layered underneath in extreme cold. It's fine for everyday winter use. Though, I can't speak to the oiled version. I usually run hot too. Highly recommend trying on though, if you can!
I have just bought one in Khaki on eBay in new without tags condition for £365. The quality is second to none, and I am looking forward to the colder months to get the best out of it.
Would love to hear a bit more about how the jacket compares against the RMC. I just pulled the trigger on the RMC and the key reasons for me were a) the look (which is very subjective), I feel the D-pockets take away from the clean silhouette and b) the alpaca lined sleeves as I prefer natural materials over artificial fibers. You mention build quality. Would you recognize a difference between the two? I feel both are very high quality items.
Hey Alexander. Firstly I think they both have outstanding build quality. Though, as i bought my RMC second hand I feel because i didn't do the research and try on various sizes I may have had the smaller size. That could affect how the pockets were for me. From memory i couldn't really layer either. Also, I'm not too sure how old my RMC was and if they had made updates. I think you are right though, all are very subjective and down to the individual. Regardless, I think you've made a fantastic purchase and the RMC ones will last equally as long. It's closer to the original as well.
@@CameronO thanks for the quick reply. I tried both back to back and the pockets are certainly higher. I guess back in the days people were supposed to work in those jackets and not relax with their hands in the pockets 😅 another difference for me was arm length. As with all IH products arm length is substantially longer which is not a bad thing on a winter jacket. Anyways, great channel! Keep up the good work!
Thanks! Happy Holidays too. I haven't really just based on the sizing and the pockets to be honest. I'm loving the tweaks the IH guys have done. The vintage ones are really expensive aren't they?
@@CameronO I hear you, the sizes can be rather hit or miss a lot of the times. And I agree! I really like how IH lined the chest pockets with the same lining As the interior. Seems like a major plus for the colder months. Also yeah, they can be a bit pricy sure. Cheers cam! Merry Christmas
Well worth the money in my opinion, even just based on this video and not seeing it in person. My brand choices have changed so much in the last few years. I have so many items from Filson I haven’t even worn yet now I just want to sell them and buy all iron heart lol
Ahhh I’ve been going back and forth between purchasing a size small or medium of this jacket. I’m 5”6 and around 145 pounds, so I’d probably need a size small so that measurements like sleeve length hit right. I’m hoping that since I’m on the smaller side, I’ll still have some room to layer. Great video as always Cam!
Aside from the pockets, which do you like better? I think the Iron Heart looks better than The Real McCoy’s. How does it compare in regard to fit, finish, and durability? Do you like the alpaca lined sleeves, or the ones on the Iron Heart?
Hey! Annoyingly i think it is hard to compare. As the sizings don't really match up. The RMC was a 42 and I would say the IH runs larger. So one can layer one cannot. But if I had to choose on comfort it would be the IH. Though again, It's because I have more room in there.
It looks perfect on you! 1000% agree with the sizing, especially on outerwear. Many people size way too small and I think part of it is a leftover from the early 2010s slim fit minimalist trend. Hi Ray. I'm 6ft. For me, the large is the BEST choice..
Killer deal!
Keep up the good work!
had them both - alpaca lined sleeves reduce ease of movement - quilted sleeves are more practical
It looks the medium would gave been small on you. The jacket is excellent.
Yep, totally agree im glad I got the large!
Cameron, should you have gotten the N1 in an XL? The L looks snug as they're suppose to be a bit baggy
amazing jacket! good video :) take care
Thanks man! Appreciate it!
I have the same jacket, absolutely love it
Nice. Built like a tank hey!
Cam, happy holidays. I wanted to ask, as a vintage clothing collector, have you ever considered a classic 40’s n1 deck jacket? Love the videos.
Cheers cam! Merry Christmas
i have a dehen1920/ship john coming in january. it looks more vintage style than your new one with the lower pockets.
Hi Cameron, do you think this jacket is suitable for Australian climate. Long time listener first time commenter.
Potentially for Thredbo. But that is about it. :) Welcome to the channel bro!
Well worth the money in my opinion, even just based on this video and not seeing it in person. My brand choices have changed so much in the last few years. I have so many items from Filson I haven’t even worn yet now I just want to sell them and buy all iron heart lol
Hey Timm, It happens. Iron Heart are just killing it. For me it's right at the top!
Also nothing wrong with Filson - mix it up! :)
No problems man. I would suggest trying the medium as well. Small sounds good but Id love to compare. You never know.
Hi Pacoburrito, at the end did you get the S or M? Many thanks.
Great jacket great video thanx
Cheers Mike
What are your chest and high measurements please ?
42" and 6ft
Large looks well
nice fit. what are your measurements? height, weight, chest
Hi mate, 6ft (180cm). 80kg o 176lbs. chest I am always a 42. The large N1 is great. loads of room and not too tight like the RMC one was
Just remeasured and im basically a 41 chest
Nice jacket but it’s modified doesn’t look like a true naval N1 deck jacket .. but really nice coat
-2 is our summer
Really were do you live Antarctica?
-2C in Canada. You can probably see people wearing short sleeves
A good review...
How tall and your weight?
184cm and 85kg currently. Hope that helps
@@CameronO thank you 🙏
It’s this or the Dehen 1920 n1.
The iron heart is a car payment. The Dehen is a house payment.
I really love Dehen. I want something of theirs!
IH have such long arm lengths, like LOOOOONG
Haha you know what, i do agree. especially for their shirting. Compared to some Flat head flannels the IH's are damn long.
10 seasons .. 😂 it should last a lifetime if you take care of it at that price point
Expensive! For $750 I’d rather buy a genuine military surplus one.
Who buys a new winter coat every 2-3 years?
Height. Weight. Jean size.
6ft, 80kg, 33 Jean size.
Carhartt is much better than these so-called made-in-Japan brands. You could buy four Carhartts for the price of these overpriced Iron Hearts
In Peru:
Alpaca lining= cheap
Vicuña lining= king 👑
its such a great jacket, so bloody cool. id really love one but it ain't ever gonna happen 8(
