I have my Barbour Bedale for over 40 years. I sent it for re-waxing about 3 years ago and it still looks brand new. For water repellence it’s top notch. Cons, it’s a little thin for cold weather. I do have an original zip in liner but it’s also not too warm. So in the cold weather you have to layer up. Re-waxing was inexpensive. And I believe it you tear a Barbour jacket they will repair it.

I recently got my Workhorse V8 a few days ago and I've been wearing it nonstop. I don't normally buy expensive jackets, but this thing is a beast. Just feeling its construction immediately lets you know that Carl isn't joking when he says that triple-stitching waxed canvas is no easy feat. That said, I feel like the filson you chose really isn’t the right filson jacket to compare to these. That said for the price the Iron and Resin is an excellent jacket I think should be closer to the Freenote in the placing. Adore my Freenote jacket, only had it a couple weeks and it picks up compliments all the time. The cotton lining is nice, wool would be nice too but doesn’t bother me either way. The jacket as a whole just feels like it’ll last forever and I agree on the shoulder gussets, it’s my first waxed jacket with them and they’re a game changer!
@pyramidcranes2213 got the 20 Oz wool version recently too and love it. So Carl's criticism is a bit off as there's clearly a woolen version available that he mentions a lot himself.
I have a 1990's Driza-bone drover I bought at aTack shop for around $125 or so. I've reproofed it twice with Sailors Reproofing oil wax. I worked in a rail yard in all kinds of weather. Oil cloth or sail cloth is what they used to use for sails on sailing ships. It's canvas. Not sure if Driza-Bone is the same company from 25 years or more ago. I have Filson Double Tin chaps made in USA when I bought them back in the 90"s for hunting and I reproofed them with Sailors. Even the double tin isn't as thick as my Driza Bone drover. I was never much into those girly Barbour jackets.
Just got the devium waxed jacket. It is rugged, 4lbs, warm. It looks like I've already been using it for years. It's a little bit shorter. It was very waxed
I have a Thedi Leathers waxed canvas/leather jacket on order right now (should be arriving soon). It is a different, longer model. It is supposedly made from old US WWII surplus tents and buffalo leather. I got measured at the Thedi shop in Thessaloniki.
Planning on ordering a Heatstraps waxed anorak. Waiting on the Waxed mouton lined Deck. I have 3 Heatstraps wool jackets. Those guys are absolutely outstanding! I usually call to order. And I love supporting a small business!
I've got the Freenote jacket with 10oz canvas and flannel lining. I've had it for a couple years now, and absolutely love it. I got it for a ridiculously good price but honestly I'd have happily paid full price. I've gotten so much joy out of it. I do tend to only wear it in the fall and winter---not so much because it's too warm for summer (I live in the Bay Area, so the summer is cold) but just the vibes are so fall/winter. I can't recommend it enough! Edit: for what it's worth, I definitely prefer that it has just buttons instead of a zipper from an aesthetic standpoint. Obviously it reduces the functionality somewhat, but this is just a jacket that should have buttons, not a zipper imo.
Great review Carl. But you picked the wrong Filson to review. I love my Tin Cloth Short Lined Cruiser Jacket. It's not perfect but the fit is great, it's comfy, and looks great. However, I wish it had a nice wool liner for real cold weather wear. I've been looking at the Freenote jackets, specifically the Riders Jacket Heavy Waxed Canvas Wool. Have you reviewed this one or do you have any plans to review it? Does anybody here own one? It's a beautiful jacket and I'm wondering how long they take to break in, how they fit, and how warm they really are. Love your channel Carl; please keep giving us great content.
Just thought you should know Carl. I'm one year into my electrical apprenticeship I just hung pipe in an industrial cooler at a Costco. I wore some Carhartt bibs that your videos helped me out with. Any advice on winter boots?
Sure! It depends on budget of course, but I always liked wearing thicker socks rather than insulated boots. Winter weight Darn Tough Vermont and change them at lunch break. It makes a huge difference.
Brave Star Denim just uploaded an Iron Side 18oz dry wax that's available for pre-order @ $168. Looks promising, and Bravestar is amazing quality, at least from my experience.
Freenote Cloth and Ship John win for me. Best construction, features and looks. The heat straps looks like a Carhartt Detroit with an unflattering fit and while i understand his appreciation of the thedi ita clearly in a total different range pricewise and has a different aesthetic. Its more like the one honorable mention instead of a clear winner to me.
What do you think of Legendary Whitetail’s waxed jacket? I’ve been very happy with their flannels and their jacket would definitely be the most affordable in your lineup
Good evening Carl. I really enjoy your videos and appreciate all the hard work you put into them. Is it possible for you to do a video on hi vis winter coats? I searched for a past video, on this topic, but couldn’t find one. Thank you and have a great evening!
I bought a Bradley Mountain field jacket last month. It cost me a kidney to import it here to Belgium, but it was definitely worth it. I especially love the inner wool lining, it's beautiful. The only thing that bothers me is the chest pocket which is a bit too small.
Tin Duck is a one man shop. Handmade top quality craftsmanship! Gussets and extra pockets can be added as you can customize your jacket!! Construction is impeccable, with strong stitching, definitely not single stitched!
My new TAD Syntax jacket arrived today. I bought it because they had it in 3XL (I got the last on in that size) and not many companies have a 3XL or even a 2XL tall. It is not a wax jacket but sheads water in the rain like one, and is definitely bad ass on L👀ks.
Great video Carl! Did you get one of the Bradley Mountain jackets? Would like to see what that one looks like as I’ve heard it’s great…but cropped short which is something that’s a deal breaker for me.
Great video, Carl! One of my favorites so far. A not so well known brand you could check out is Peregrine from the UK. Huckberry stocks them and they might fall in between Barbour and Belstaff. Slim fitting motorcycle styles. LL Bean just came out with the 1924 Field Coat in waxed Millerain and that looks/feels great. Lastly, Taylor Stitch always runs a few waxed jacket models, but I'm guessing TS would fall towards the lower end of quality spectrum. You should've showcased your Tensaw! I love my Tensaw and Kingsman waxed vest.
Really enjoyed this video. I own the Iron and Resin and was biting my nails when you were ranking it. Lol. Im on the leaner side, so the fit works for me and I enjoy the uneven wax, as it seems more rugged to my eye. I also feel like its fairly heavy and couldnt imagine wearing a 24oz beast. Just wish it was made in the US. Im also really lucky to have won a Belstaff jacket at the LA distinguished gentleman's ride. Its beautiful and a tank (mainly due to the armor), but its really flexible and not stiff at all.
Thanks for talking about the Devium Overdrive, I’m very interested in getting one but don’t live somewhere I can go try one on and check them out in person and I can’t find anyone else really talking about them anywhere. I originally wanted to get a Barbour jacket but something about that Devium has really grabbed me Edit: The Freenote is sick too but I just don’t know if the style points and gussets justify the jump in price for my needs. I also prefer the zipper on the Devium to the Freenote’s buttons. This might sound like a silly question, but how do they compare in hand? Does one feel more ‘premium’ ??
I have a Filson tin cloth cruiser and it’s worn to hell but I still wear it because it’s so damn comfortable now. I ‘rewaxed’ it once and it does repel water pretty decently as long as it’s not pouring obviously. Dig the channel man…..thanks 🤙
Love my Freenote Cloth Riders jacket. Thanks for showcasing the Large size. I’ve been wondering if I should buy a Large over my current Medium, but seeing how well the Large fit you, I’m feeling good about my choice since I’m a tinier dude. This video was very informative with a lot of waxed jackets variety and DEFINITELY brands I never seen before so it was immeasurably useful for me. Saved as a future resource when shopping.
The king Of Cool , wore Belstaff and if they’re good enough for Steve McQueen, they good enough for me to own two Trailmasters . I like how they patina and mild to your body over time, I’ve owned mine for years and they’re still going strong and get plenty of wear , here in the U.K.
Choice is so subjective as the real choice is how it fits on the buyers body , I’m slim long body with wide shoulders so what’s good for me would in no way be good for you so all I can take from this is build quality and or features. Having said that I do love the Greek made jacket , I have a selvedge denim jacket with leather details very similar that gets compliments every time I wear it.
I love the look of that TAD Internal WX! A waxed herringbone?? Brilliant! I have a Flint & Tinder waxed jacket but it’s not the trucker. It’s the hunting style, which the model name I can’t think of at the moment. It’s in an olive color & I dig it, but don’t find it to be very warm. So I’ll throw those electric warmers in the back game pocket, which warms the kidneys quite well.
This is a bad ass video it’s a ton of work to just buy all of this product and create the comparison. I just became aware of Bradley mountain as a brand. Ordered their Wilder Waxed canvas backpack. Might need to think about that jacket. Ughhh lol.
I was on the fence for a flint and tinder and a filson short lined cruiser. Was pumped to see this video to see some more options! There are so many cool jackets between the thedi and the filson Aberdeen i will have to put more thought into my choice!! 👍
@@CarlMurawski I am very pleased with it. This is my first time trying the Staywax, and I really like the dry finish to it. It's nice to not feel sticky or having a gunked up watch face. I also have the new HB Hudson in a box, I just didn't have time to film that video yet. The TAD box was a smaller haul, so a quicker shoot on limited time. I love the run down. I have/Had a few on your list, and it spot on.
Hey Carl, I really enjoy your channel. I'm looking to buy a waxed jacket, like you I'm a bit stocky (5'8, 180 lbs). I'm trying to determine my size based on your modeling. You seem to wear a large or extra large. Based on my stats would I wear the same sizes? Thanks for your help.
Think Ship John would be my winner...great jacket. I also like Bradley Mountain, Railcar, and Rogue Territory...but so many great options. GReat video!
Another great video and comparison! The only downside to the better quality jackets is trying to actually pick one up when I have the cash... vs placing an order and waiting until next year to get one. Ha. Timing can be lucky at times... but I guess that's the game you play.
Awesome video! Your videos have helped me in recent months to build my wardrobe while having less but owning better quality clothing…. I would definitely recommend checking out the Filson short lined cruiser jacket. Only downside is it’s not made in the USA anymore. Still an awesome jacket. It was also featured in Yellowstone.
Everyone talks about the Ship John Will’s jacket, but the sleeper pick is the Ramblin’ jacket. I swung by the store to try the Wills for size and really didn’t like the fit. The Ramblin’ jacket on the other hand fit perfectly and wasn’t as bulky.
I have the Beckbe Chalfont coming tomorrow. Was looking for more western than trucker, and the shoulder gussets look good, as I don't like it when sleeves ride up arms while driving.
Looking for 0ne with buttoned and hidden hardware pockets a longer body so I don't get cold bump bumcrack breeze full wool liner both upper chest pockets 1 interior breast pocket and hood. I do all kinds of industrial outdoor work in cold wet weather in oregon. Lots of grease and welding and getting in 350 degree confind spaces for a quick period and tons of welding. I'd love to see a same video but hooded. But some extra length especially in back works better for real work in all positions I'm searching for a good one to just wax my own
You also have to remember that a lot of people don't want a hot liner in their jackets. Especially wool. I live in South Carolina. I want a waxed jacket for the wetter, chillier seasons but it doesn't get cold enough for me to justify buying any wool lined coats. I would not be able to wear it for more than a few weeks each year. I prefer it to be unlined so that if needed I can add my own warmer layer underneath. Less liner = larger customer base
Really curious about the marine layer. I like the wet look becausr i hope it means the wax has real function. Ideally i would also get a slightly longer jacket with the vertical lower pockets. I find those more comfortable for storage and resting hands. When walking or working i don’t find horizontal pockets all that useful in part because they don’t hold up your stuff securely or your arms up high enough.
I also would just say I think you could have split this into Field coats and work/trucker jackets. I think the TAD field jacket is better than the work jacket. I also think &Son's has two waxed field coats that look as good as any of the other mass produced ones. Thanks for the video.
Owned several Outback Trading Oilskin jackets from the late 80'- early 90's. Still have my Trebark Camo Pattern Oilskin...great hunting jacket. Easy to reproof. Always wanted a waxed jacket.
Are you familiar with the brand Manifattura Ceccarelli? They have higher end (more expensive, at least) waxed shirts, jackets, and longer winter and mountain coats that may interest you Another Italian brand is Shangri-La Heritage. I don’t know how often they have waxed jackets, but also have higher end leather and wool coats/jackets as well as a custom option
Awesome video as always.. I’m just a little confused why you used that Filson jacket instead of the short coat which is a lot more on par with the rest in the video .. just asking thanks..
I used the jackets I had on hand and wanted to spend the money on smaller brands. Everyone knows the big names, but these small shops are the ones I like to support.

And it does feel slim, kinda tight
Devium is an awesome brand!
Great video! My pick is: Private White V.C. - The Permanent Style Wax Walker.
You obviously enjoyed yourself on this video! Thanks for doing it.
Thank you for watching!
Can’t say enough about Tom Beckbe. I adore my Tensaw jacket. I also really enjoy my flint & tinder Hudson
Important to note that it's an unlined jacket for guys who live outside of the colder regions or prefer to do their own layering
Awesome video! Happy with my Freenote, Heatstraps, and Ship John jackets 👍
Good choices all!
I have a Barbour Beaufort, though a size too small smh, and it just has this X factor. No better way to explain it. Very nicely done videom too
Love mine...40th anniversary!
Good evening Carl. I really enjoy your videos and appreciate all the hard work you put into them. Is it possible for you to do a video on hi vis winter coats?
I searched for a past video, on this topic, but couldn’t find one. Thank you and have a great evening!
solid video brother, so many good options here!
Thanks man!!!
I bought a Bradley Mountain field jacket last month. It cost me a kidney to import it here to Belgium, but it was definitely worth it. I especially love the inner wool lining, it's beautiful. The only thing that bothers me is the chest pocket which is a bit too small.
I dont own any of these, but that would be my choice as well. Glad you are liking it. Maybe I will try one someday!
Tin Duck is a one man shop. Handmade top quality craftsmanship! Gussets and extra pockets can be added as you can customize your jacket!! Construction is impeccable, with strong stitching, definitely not single stitched!
The Iron & Resin Cruiser is the best jacket I've ever owned.
Same here. I bought one last year and I absolutely love it. It's not as waxed as the one he has though. Its pretty dry.
Iron and Resin Cruiser is a beast! I have it in black and tan. Great for motorcycle riding.
Thanks for talking about the Devium Overdrive, I’m very interested in getting one but don’t live somewhere I can go try one on and check them out in person and I can’t find anyone else really talking about them anywhere.
I originally wanted to get a Barbour jacket but something about that Devium has really grabbed me
Edit:
The Freenote is sick too but I just don’t know if the style points and gussets justify the jump in price for my needs. I also prefer the zipper on the Devium to the Freenote’s buttons.
This might sound like a silly question, but how do they compare in hand? Does one feel more ‘premium’ ??
I've got a Made in inglend waxed jacket 10 oz. it's perfect couldn't be happier.
Just got a Tom Beckbe and it's my first waxed jacket. Is it normal that it has an odd odor?
I have a Filson tin cloth cruiser and it’s worn to hell but I still wear it because it’s so damn comfortable now. I ‘rewaxed’ it once and it does repel water pretty decently as long as it’s not pouring obviously. Dig the channel man…..thanks 🤙
PS ~ If you wait till the summer or winter sale and they do happen to list it you can typically get them then for far less. That’s what I did.
I envy you. It's hard to buy. It's always out of stock. I'm waiting for the V8 for a long time😢
Love my Freenote Cloth Riders jacket.
I like the shirt that you are wearing. Who makes that
? Also, is there a company out there that will wax any non-waxed jackets?
Thats the Kato Brand Camp Shirt. It's pretty boxy, but I like it a lot.
Awsome video. Always appreciate the good, better & best!
The king Of Cool , wore Belstaff and if they’re good enough for Steve McQueen, they good enough for me to own two Trailmasters . I like how they patina and mild to your body over time, I’ve owned mine for years and they’re still going strong and get plenty of wear , here in the U.K.
What shirt is that you are wearing?
Choice is so subjective as the real choice is how it fits on the buyers body , I’m slim long body with wide shoulders so what’s good for me would in no way be good for you so all I can take from this is build quality and or features.
Having said that I do love the Greek made jacket , I have a selvedge denim jacket with leather details very similar that gets compliments every time I wear it.
Thanks Carl! Monotone Thedi would definitely tempt me but I’ve been burned before with a custom jacket.
I can recommend Barbour living in England but wouldn’t mind getting my hands on one of the Flint and Tinder jackets
Ughhh lol.
Thanks bro!!!
I’ve been waiting for this video and glad I did! Great video Carl.
Hope you enjoyed it!
I was on the fence for a flint and tinder and a filson short lined cruiser. Was pumped to see this video to see some more options! There are so many cool jackets between the thedi and the filson Aberdeen i will have to put more thought into my choice!! 👍
Oh boy I’ve been waiting for a video like this! Thanks for the awesome content Carl. Really top quality production and information.
Thanks a ton!
I just got the TAD Interval WX yesterday. Thus far, I am digging it. I think this is something I can comfortable wear all summer on the Ruckus.
It's a really great jacket.
Good choices all!!
Another great video and comparison! The only downside to the better quality jackets is trying to actually pick one up when I have the cash... vs placing an order and waiting until next year to get one. Ha. Timing can be lucky at times... but I guess that's the game you play.
I have 3 iron and resin waxed jackets and love them!! I know they are not made in the US but man they are heavy duty
Theyre awesome!
Thats right, Rips jacket was a black Filson short cruiser. I forgot about that.
Awesome that you covered Triple Aught Design. Didn't think people knew about this company.
Drizabone was my first waxed jacket but too outdoorsy for work. Barbour blends into the urban environment well and can be dressed up.
Why wasn't Barbour rated in your final ranking?
Owned several Outback Trading Oilskin jackets from the late 80'- early 90's. Still have my Trebark Camo Pattern Oilskin...great hunting jacket. Easy to reproof. Always wanted a waxed jacket.
Filson Tin Cloth?
Are you familiar with the brand Manifattura Ceccarelli? They have higher end (more expensive, at least) waxed shirts, jackets, and longer winter and mountain coats that may interest you
Another Italian brand is Shangri-La Heritage. I don’t know how often they have waxed jackets, but also have higher end leather and wool coats/jackets as well as a custom option
Great vid man, keep up the good work
Thanks, will do!
Tecovas makes a surprisingly good waxed trucker jacket, no lining, but I like it!
It's Barbour Bedale. It's a place in Yorkshire.
Appreciate the love here Carl! Great insights!
