    I am obsessed with deck jackets because they're warm as hell, cool as sh*t, have a fascinating history, and are made of all natural materials - some of which you've probably never thought to wear.
    For this video I break down the four deck jackets I own plus a few other popular models you can check out! Let me know which is your favorite!

    05:01 Charles just wrote me an email to note that the lining is described as wool, alpaca, and cotton - but through an error in translation. The cotton component is the very fine mesh the wool and alpaca is woven through. So there's technically cotton in the lining but the fuzz you're feeling on your skin is pure alpaca and wool, no cotton :D

      I have a Spiewak (sp?) it’s not super accurate. Waxed cotton, black mutton collar, quilted liner. Does have button cover nice heavy zipper, blue, w drawstrings. Kind of neat checkered pattern to the canvas fabric. I went down the N1 rabbit hole years ago. So I get it. This one came up used (barely) for a great price. So I grabbed it. Couldn’t see spending the $ for more original. Did end up wearing it a great deal. Still do. I did the surplus officers pea coat for years until I wore it a bit thin. This is still a bit dressy (don’t have to look like I’m skiing for a warm coat) having a nice not too fitted but comfy look. It can be almost too warm. I live in upstate NY. Still visit friends in the city and it’s perfect for a long day out there.
      Good breakdown of what’s available. Mirrors what I seemed to find when i did my search. Good info.

    The 'Lost Worlds' version of an N-1 deck jacket is made of heavy duty, black, horsehide leather. It features an authentic, 'fireman's hook' closure system for the storm flap covering the zipper, a full (body & sleeves) felted wool lining, and a knitted wool collar and storm cuffs. Roomy, wind-proof, warm and water resistant, its durable horsehide exterior makes it tough as nails and probably the most unique version out there of the iconic N-1. Apart from the use of horsehide for the outer shell, it's a highly accurate copy of a circa 1943 N-1 in all other respects. One of my favourite coats that gives real meaning to the N-1's other name: "foul weather jacket".

    • @garyp.7501
      @garyp.7501 25 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I'd say the 'Lost Worlds' ANJ-4 which is the jacket you are referring to seemed warmer to me and the pockets aren't quite as useful. (I no longer own one, because the one I was going to buy had been worn by a smoker so there was no way to get the cigarette smoke out of it.). Also the cost is like 2X all the rest of the N1's mentioned in this video.

    The other deck jacket that is in this same category is the 'Heat Straps Deck Jacket V1'. Major difference is that it has snaps instead of buttons on the front flap and the side adjustment straps (defeats the issue for open sea with the corrosion, but who is going to sea in one of these anyway.) and again a Mouton lining instead of the wool/alpaca blend pile. Also no snap on the handwarmer pocket like on the Iron Heart version. Also I can't tell from the website photos, but it also appears not to have the neck flap strap.

    I bought the deck jacket from Pike Brothers this past fall, mainly because I loved the look and it happens to be my last name. I absolutely love it! The jungle cloth is thick and the sleeves are great for me - they have an internal cuff and then wider than normal opening which works great with heavy gloves. I ride my motorcycle often in the winter in the Northeast and it keeps me very warm - I can't say enough great things about it. The only slight negative is that the wool collar is a tad scratchy, but I'm almost always wearing a collared shirt so it doesn't bother me. Highly recommend for half the cost of the others!

    Impeccable timing! I just sold my Iron Heart N1 to pull the trigger on a Dehen N1 yesterday. The IH was great but the fit wasn't perfect on me. I'm hoping the Dehen is as luxurious as it seems. You're right though, there really isn't much content out there on N1 jackets.

    • @Stridewise
      @Stridewise  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Awesome pick! I wish it was jungle cloth/bedford cord instead of waxed canvas which I'm kinda tired of, but if the Large is 29" tall I'd probably get one because the length is my biggest stumbling block!

    • @journeymanedc
      @journeymanedc 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Stridewise I agree. It would be nice if Dehen maybe offered the jacket in either fabric. Bedford and waxed canvas both have their advantages. I don't agree with the Stolen Valor thing on USN deck jackets. These jackets were made in WWII. If he ask the guy wearing it and he served he would be in his 90's. As long as you don't walk around saying that you serve in the military I don't think it is Stolen Valor. Just got the Iron Heart N1 delivered in XXXL and loving it. I started with a XXL and it was just too tight around the waist and a little snug in the shoulders. The 3XL is perfect. Just for comparison, I'm 6'4" with a 46" chest measurement. The length is spot on as well, which is rare for someone of my height. Unfortunately, it just warmed up here, so no opportunity to wear it. Should cool down soon though.

    Biased opinion here, but I love my Freenote Mariner. Because I bought it online, I trust Freenotes sizing over IH's. IH's sizing is a bit all over the place for me in general. Also picked the Mariner up last spring on sale, sold on both the price and the full alpaca lining. The idea of buttons on the IH didn't really appeal to me as it seemed redundant and alot of work to zip and button. Simplicity of design is more to my liking as well.
