Rich people wear cheap stuff. That’s what I truly see. They just don’t care. Quiet luxury is just the new monogram for the masses. Rich people dont care about their look. They care about their words.
Very true. Very rich intelligent, self made business people tend not to value status symbols. They know the value of each dollar. A good example illustrating this is when Tom gifts Logan an expensive watch and Logan is unimpressed. Logan also lectures Roman about how he should know how much a gallon of milk costs.
I wouldn't say "cheap" more like "reasonable price". You can get genuine leather bags, belts, and shoes custom made for you cheaper and with better quality than what they offered in High End Store such as Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Dior etc.
Not really cheap, do you call a £625 cap cheap? Definitely not for the ordinary folks. People always thought that the rich or old money people wear cheap clothing, they just wear plain expensive clothes.
Great spotting! Although I disagree with what the 'old money' aesthetic stands for. I don't think it's about choosing what's the most expensive, but about willing to pay a lot for high-quality garments, cause that's the former definition of luxury garments. Succession's costume design is interesting tho.
What I love is lots of my wardrobe is from zegna, purple label. Never worn brunello, loro piana, tom ford. Can honestly say it took me 3 years to build but I look at it an genuinely feel happy to wear them.
I think that high quality, well thought out and well fitting clothing is usually worth the money. No doubt about it. But at what point does a material turn from cotton to gold? lol
I was obsessed with Logan’s cardigans. They were just beautiful. And there was a very particular deep, but bright blue that made appearances on the men in the last season that just sent me.
the burberry bit in successions is not just about Burberry prints, but the size of it - the people in the show don't wear bags and accessories of this size in these settings. This point always gets neglected
True. What do you need to bring so badly? If you have anything important to keep near you, you could have a servant keep it safe in another room or something.
Actually, if you look closely, it's a Burberry knock-off! It's missing the side straps from the authentic bag. (No, I don't actually know this. I researched it.) I suspect the wardrobe people have a sense of humor and wanted an inside joke.
I challenge the assertion that "You need a lot of money to dress in the quiet luxury style" Actually you do not-you need to know how to identify luxury fabrics and quality construction along with the basic styles (such as blazer, pants, skirt, shirt, etc) to make up your wardrobe. Then I go to resale, thrift or charity stores and buy -for instance-cashmere sweaters for pennies on the dollar. I recently bought a stunning quality cashmere sweater set for *gasp* $25 (and benefitted the charity shop too). Take your finds to a tailor if needed and have them fitted if that's needed. Less expensive and way more green than poor quality clothes made in China, and you'll look like you came from generational wealth.
It's all relative. $3k for billionaires whose worth keeps growing billions a year is nothing. They are not the usual rich who we call rich. They are the rich people for the popular rich people we constantly see in the media. Imagine having a whole media empire where Lebron is just an employee and an asset of one of your divisions. They're off the scale😂imagine you want to buy some clothes for what it is to you paying 0.000000075% of your net worth (3,000 divided by 40 billion). Would you choose a certain shop or a brand just for the sake of getting into an empty place where you feel comfortable and have a more pleasant buying experience and get a high quality item? I would. Why any hassle for buying anything (queues and masses surrounding coming at you -they're famous-) when I can just get something really good and a good time for what it is nearly nothing to me?
It's all relative. Imagine buying a sweater for $30. Sounds reasonable? But there countries, where people earn $3 a day. to them $30 is half of their monthly wages.
You could perceive the quality of the attire in almost every scene. The baseball cap thing is a bit weird, tho. Sadly they did not care much about the pens and stationery.
I also just finished the show and you're right the costume design is fantastic imo shiv was one of my favourites everything she wore was very pleasing to the eye but never too flashy
@jamesleung you should mention the where Ralph Lauren and Loro Piana draw their inspiration. The truly old school brands like New & Lingwood or Anderson & Sheppard
This is probably a dumb question, but is more expensive cashmere less itchy? I purchased a $120 cashmere sweater from Everlane in 2019 and I could barely stand to wear it. I even attempted wearing another blouse underneath it but my skin said "nope!" whenever the cashmere touched me, haha. I've had my eye on a couple Ralph Lauren cashmere pieces but am worried that I'll have the same reaction!
In my experience, higher price doesn’t necessarily mean less itchy. I’ve had cheaper pieces that are soft and expensive pieces that itch like mad. I think it’s how they’re processed when they’re being made!
Truly wealthy people don’t even wear these “quiet luxury” brands as Succession suggests. There is no “formula” or “rule” and rich people don’t buy things always because they are expensive. They buy it because they like it or need it. Truly rich people also buy "normal" brands like Lacoste, Levi's, Rayban, Pantagonia, Ralph Lauren, etc etc... and they also buy very well-known luxury brands like Louis Vuitton, Prada, Gucci etc etc... This is all marketing and people still believe it that truly rich people will spend $600 for a cap... If the truly rich need a cap, they buy a good cap from any common sports brand! Truly rich people are not stupid! And even though there are some very rich people buying $600 caps, they are not the majority. As I said, there is no rule or uniform that all rich people use to be understood as rich. People spend their money in different ways and it’s not always on fashion. Truly rich people actually go bespoke or to a tailor when they need more formal clothes and they dress casual with all type of brands with all types of prices (high and low). They don´t think this way like the "quiet luxury" trend wants us to believe!
I prefer it to the maximalist “creative types” or nepotism babies. While I might also argue that the Roy’s aren’t truly old money in the truest Old Money sense
There's Quiet Luxury and there is obvious luxury. In some professions you have to look rich. Impressing people is part of the job. This is where MAD MEN beats SUCCESSION
I believe that more than about owning a certain brand it is about the design or craft, the exclusivity, the purity or authenticity, the design of the item that an old money notices. It doesn't have to be expensive always to appear rich or classy.
The Roys are definitely new money as their wealth isn’t multi-generational, you can see the distinct differences between them and the Pierce family who are actual old money. One of the subplots is how Logan has been rejected by the old money establishment regardless of his wealth, them wearing quiet luxury is intentional and a way to try an “fit in”, Lucas is the opposite of that somewhat embracing his new money status even though he too is trying to to craft an image
Became a fan of JMM frames many years ago (Jeff Goldblum's iconic frames). Seeing them on Jeremy Strong's character, Kendall Roy, further validates the timeless style. Spendy but worth it.
I've not seen Succession, but I found the analysis linking elements of some of the characters' personal/professional life to the way they dressed particularly interesting. I have on the odd occasion found myself feeling intrigued by others' piece selections, wondering if there's a facet of their personality or backstory that's on show at that given time.
Glad you enjoyed it, I was worried it might be a bit too niche of a topic. You should definitely give it a watch, it’s one of the best series I’ve personally seen!
Showing no logos is the best thing. It’s opposite what the Chinese want. They are always wanting to show the logos so they can show off to their friends and family that they have some money. I lived in Asia and saw this constantly. I even saw one guy still wearing a stitched on temp logo of a suit on the outside of his jacket sleeve. I told him that it should be cut off he immediately said “NO”. That he wanted his friends and relatives to see that. To give everyone the impression that he had some money. Even though it looked odd to leave it on the jacket sleeve. That’s why I think most people buy these expensive pieces so they can then show off that designer label. It’s ALL about the label. The name. Crazy.
7:03 I can assure you most of this brands are similar in quality to H&M and Zara. Nowadays if you want quality items you have to go to tailors or good boutiques. Most rich people buy the more expensive item of clothing is because they have the money and don't mind spending it.
would love to see a video where you show budget alternatives of these / give ideas about how to do quiet luxury without denting the bank account so much!
I love how you are providing this information most of the content creators only provide the real deal and everyone can’t afford them so it’s nice to have a dupe. I like the products in *amzclothes* .
I love this style. And I love sucession. I've subscribed in the hope you for whatever reason do a follow up on this/similar topics! Adrien Brody's characters outfit is my favourite tbh

James… if may say… it’s clear to me 99.99% of people have never had their own tailor.. or a family tailor.. and to me this is the origin of the rules and style you theorized .. agonizing boring days of childhood.. and it’s good quality
The way I see it, money cannot buy class. You either have it or you dont. Doesnt even matter if youre new money or old. Ive seen plenty for multi generational wealth being spent on the cheapest tackiest stuff
Old money people take care of their clothes, and keep wearing them throughout their lives. They choose classic styles because then their clothes never look dated, and some pieces can be handed down and worn by younger generations. They also wear cheaper stuff when convenient, such as during general public/press/charity appearances, when they need to look approachable. Invitations to red carpet events, give them all the opportunities they could ever want or need to dress fancily.
For me it's all about choosing a product from a brand based on its heritage. So, for example, Loro Piana are known for their high quality cashmere, so I would consider buying a cashmere product from them. But I wouldn't spend 300 quid on a cotton baseball cap just because it comes from Loro Piana when I can get one for 30 quid from any number of companies. Similarly, Armani designs and tailors beautifully cut suits and I might buy one if I could afford it. But I wouldn't buy one of their watches just because it has the Armani name on it, because they have no heritage in watchmaking. Understanding a little about what goes into a product, and what sets a high quality product apart from the rest, can go a long way in allowing you to make discerning choices, perhaps from lesser known brands that haven't jumped on the "Quiet Luxury" bandwagon and are therefore not ridiculously expensive. But you could never be criticised for your choice among those who really know that particular niche product or material. I'm fortunate to be based in Scotland where we have some fabulous quality brands making use of traditional skills and available natural materials, such as outdoor clothing brand Meander. Many of these fly below the radar but punch above their weight in quality and craftsmanship.
The caps where why I landed in this video, when i watched the show was the first thing I noticed about their fashion that fascinated me, all my caps look like crap compared to theirs, Yeah, it's a lot of money, but if I ever "have fuck it" money I would totally rock a $300 perfectly crafted piece of clothing
The characters in Succession basically wear exactly the same kind of boring mainstream clothes that old people who shop at Marks & Spencer wear except they cost £££.

I think that high quality, well thought out and well fitting clothing is usually worth the money. No doubt about it. But at what point does a material turn from cotton to gold? lol
I’m into silent luxury - Uniqlo. No one knows that I’m not rich.
Haha same
I was obsessed with Logan’s cardigans. They were just beautiful. And there was a very particular deep, but bright blue that made appearances on the men in the last season that just sent me.
I love these video essays I didn't know I needed... 😅😅 Awesome video!
I find it adorable that they had Roman wear a kids shirt when he ran home to his mom. What an incredible detail.
That royal connection makes all the sense in the world.
the burberry bit in successions is not just about Burberry prints, but the size of it - the people in the show don't wear bags and accessories of this size in these settings. This point always gets neglected
Very good point!
I still can’t comprehend wearing a $3000 sweater 😭
Crazy isn’t it!!
When you’re worth tens if not hundreds of millions the price tag doesn’t seem so large
It's all relative. Imagine buying a sweater for $30. Sounds reasonable?
But there countries, where people earn $3 a day. to them $30 is half of their monthly wages.
Its like 3 cents for them. Would you care?
All old money is quiet luxury but not all quiet luxury is old money
You could perceive the quality of the attire in almost every scene. The baseball cap thing is a bit weird, tho. Sadly they did not care much about the pens and stationery.
I also just finished the show and you're right the costume design is fantastic imo shiv was one of my favourites everything she wore was very pleasing to the eye but never too flashy
Yes Shiv looked amazing! I should have included more of her outfits in this video
it must be a really hard work to find these clothes and do this video ! thanks for your work
The Instagram account did all the hard work! Thanks for watching
@@JamesLeung Thank you! :)
Stumbled upon this and a very good analogy of the succession characters and their clothing choices. You are what you wear for sure.
Thank you so much 🙏
Truly wealthy people don’t even wear these “quiet luxury” brands as Succession suggests.
While I might also argue that the Roy’s aren’t truly old money in the truest Old Money sense
fascinating! i could watch HOURS of content on this topic alone
Thank you!
That’s $625 dollar cap you can get at GoodWill for $1.27 hahahahaha
The Roys are definitely new money as their wealth isn’t multi-generational, you can see the distinct differences between them and the Pierce family who are actual old money.
One of the subplots is how Logan has been rejected by the old money establishment regardless of his wealth, them wearing quiet luxury is intentional and a way to try an “fit in”, Lucas is the opposite of that somewhat embracing his new money status even though he too is trying to to craft an image
The LP Cap is a Rolex cap. I don't know how they got one without the logo tho.
omg such great video James!! I just started watching Succession and loved their costume. How were you able to identify each exact piece?
Thank you! There’s an Instagram page called succession fashion and they did all the hard work finding the pieces!
would have been better if you had included the watches they wear
This perfectly defines the term ‘fashion victim’.
Hi James! Was just wondering if you will ever get around to doing a summer styling video?
Absolutely will do! Probably around May. It's still Winter in the UK haha
Wealthy people wear luxury brands in they stock portfolio.
Excellent character study and eye for the brands. Your content is top notch ❤. You just earned a sub.
Thanks so much, glad you enjoyed it!
I’m more interested in your sweater than what they are wearing on the show. Where is it from?
It’s from Solace Theory 👍
Currently getting a vicuna suit done and its cool seeing loro piana get such attention in this show.
That’s amazing to hear! Have had any vicuña before?
@@JamesLeung Yes! I got a shirt as a Christmas gift from a work friend and the hype is not exaggerated.
Pay the Peruvians who made your suit.
The algorithm is feeding me fashion now ... time to spend some money
Love your videos! Keep up the good work! You've got fans in Texas! :)
Thank goodness for this video! My 2024 collection can now be complete!
Hahaha 🤣
at this point they could easily just go full bespoke, guess that would miss the point though
the funny thing about kendall (jeremy strong) is that he doesn't have a nice bod, so even loro piana clothes look meh on him.
See, he doesn't need that. He is phisically fit, just not muscled. He is going to be in the spotlight regardless
Quiet fashion and 'old money' don't need external validation.
My own personal style has really evolved into the classic, yet rugged aesthetic when before it was a mess of streetwear and left of center elements
Yes same here!
Now streetwear do be hittin though
The name. Crazy.
pathological mind set of some chinese
They are just NPCs.
Such good show. Think I’m gonna watch it again lol
Haha me too!
7:03 I can assure you most of this brands are similar in quality to H&M and Zara. Nowadays if you want quality items you have to go to tailors or good boutiques. Most rich people buy the more expensive item of clothing is because they have the money and don't mind spending it.
4:19: my ears started bleeding
All this insane clothing and the piece I'm most interested in is your sweater. Where did you get it?
11:32 he spitting facts
would love to see a video where you show budget alternatives of these / give ideas about how to do quiet luxury without denting the bank account so much!
Very good idea!
bro… just thrift
stealth wealth
The Gucci always coincides with the breakdown(s)! Great vid
Thank you!
6:57 Attitude of old money 😂, that sounds like sum crazy rich people use to justify their crazy expensive purchases.
I love how you are providing this information most of the content creators only provide the real deal and everyone can’t afford them so it’s nice to have a dupe. I like the products in *amzclothes* .
Succession is a great show. Best TV show last year hands down.
Totally agree! Might be one of my favourites of all time!
"all these prices have changed"
As if we could afford any of the prices anyways😅
Haha true 🤣
One of the few logos seen is on the bathing suit worn by Logan. It has the back tag of Vilebrequin. (They come from St. Tropez.)
I love this style. And I love sucession. I've subscribed in the hope you for whatever reason do a follow up on this/similar topics! Adrien Brody's characters outfit is my favourite tbh
I’d love to do more! Unfortunately HBO copyright striked this video and took all my montesation which doesn’t encourage me much! 😭
@@JamesLeung damn, that's a shame 🫠
If you buy any of these, they will be rich, you will be poor. Please Go Local, if not you can also travel world and buy their local Artist. Rather then B As Company
Great video! Well produced
Thanks so much!
James… if may say… it’s clear to me 99.99% of people have never had their own tailor.. or a family tailor.. and to me this is the origin of the rules and style you theorized .. agonizing boring days of childhood.. and it’s good quality
ok but where did you get the lovely sweater YOU are wearing?
It’s from wings of liberty 👍
The way I see it, money cannot buy class. You either have it or you dont. Doesnt even matter if youre new money or old. Ive seen plenty for multi generational wealth being spent on the cheapest tackiest stuff
I want to avoid buying from LVMH - can you make a vid about side stepping LVMH ?
Old money people take care of their clothes, and keep wearing them throughout their lives. They choose classic styles because then their clothes never look dated, and some pieces can be handed down and worn by younger generations. They also wear cheaper stuff when convenient, such as during general public/press/charity appearances, when they need to look approachable. Invitations to red carpet events, give them all the opportunities they could ever want or need to dress fancily.
*Costume Design and Wardrobe Selection are not the same thing.
I own three Ralph Lauren purple label pieces that I purchased from upscale retail shops, years ago.
CONGRATULATIONS
Sorry, but £300 for a cotton cap is just as stupid as £2000 for a "loud" burberry handbag. Maybe even more stupid…
I agree!
Okay but sweater are you wearing? lol I love it!
