actually it's 08+ that are known to blow up. The engines in the Hawkeye are tough. it was the last generation that was build strong. I've been running 360whp in my 07 sti for 6 years on stock internals and have never had a problem.
anyone who says the Hawkeyes blow up easy have no idea what the hell they're doing. poor maintenance, poor tune, poor driving skills, etc...
So does that mean the engine in the 05 blobeye is strong too? Serious question im considering buying.

Nice review, but high center of gravity? Not at all, the whole principle of the boxer engine is for low center of gravity. That's the primary reason Subaru goes with this engine type. Sit up high? Yes but that's much different than the car having a low center of gravity.

The motor can handle over 300whp reliably, you just need a good tuner like JrTuned. They had a hawkeye running 9's and 10's stock longblock.

Around 350-380 is when you have to get a built motor to keep it reliable
The day I have one of these sitting next to a challenger in my garage, will be a SWEET day. I've always loved the Hawkeye. In my opinion it's the best looking STI yet

High center of gravity ? The seating position on a Rally oriented car was set high so the pilot and copilot could see what's in front of the car while racing through different conditions. Not to mention that the seating position IS NOT the "Center of Gravity." The position of the engine however IS. And the STI is world renowned for its low Center of Gravity providing superior grip. Also, STI's are known for blowing when owned, tuned, modified and abused by twits whom don't know what they're doing or talking about, like addressing the seating position as "Center of Gravity."

When the time comes I plan on getting a 2005 STI. Paying off and upgrading my 2011 STi for the meanwhile.
I've got this exact model but factory original with a few genuine STI upgrades. Amazing car to drive and to look at.
I love my 05 Sti. Wouldn't trade it for anything in the price range. Currently doing a full build on the motor looking for a safe 450 wheel hp. I personally love the interior. It's a perforce car, I don't need creature comforts. Nothing beats the blue inserts and red stitching imo
One of the first 07 STI reviews on TH-cam good vid should do more vids of the old subies if u can possibly a 04

Great review m8....I had a 2004 blob eye had it few weeks and sold it.I,d wanted one for years it as soon as I bought when I just wasn't impressed
It was running 350 bhp and was very quick car but just couldn't live with the high seating position and the cars bare bones interior

Except where i live, it's almost impossible to get a good one, even when you somehow manage to save all the money. And all i want is a completely stock, well preserved one.
The 2007 sti came with stock external wastegate turbo , or you can by pase it to an external one ?
i had 2007 wrx sti, bought it with 47k mileage, did around 60k miles before it got wrecked in an accident, engine was working like a charm all the time

I was thinking of getting an 07 Hawkeye, but I’m pretty sketched out by the “blowing up engine” idea. Is it something I should worry about, or does it only happen to heavily modified ones?
You should look it up. There are some things to look for when buying a used sti as far as I know

Hey Evan, can you control the understeer with the DCCD button by the center console? If you make it negative, making the car more RWD bias, will it control the understeer on a stock STI?

It's a hit and miss. Just because it has been rebuilt doesn't mean you should trust it. Most shops butcher EJ rebuilds.

Imo blob eye is more aggressive if fully tuned...looks like a beast... hawkeye on the other hand is more beautiful in general.
Dang I wish you could review mine, with Feal 441 coilovers, Front/Rear whiteline swaybars and Bridgestone Potenza RE-71R's it handles like crazy glue on the road, and with 400WHP it just makes it that much funner!

Nice man, similar set up to mine. RCE t2s, enkei pf01 17x9 with RE-71R's, 450whp with blouch 1.5xtr on e85. Most bushing and F&R cobb sways. I agree, these fucken potenzas have endless grip its scary to take them to the limit. Gonna take it to the track this weekend finally too!

Forester XTs are awesome cars. Go for it.
I just like the way the Subaru's sound with the unequal length headers. I prefer DSM's a little more, make more power cheaper, more reliable, dirt cheap to buy.

hi. i have a 2006 wrx but with sti engine. i Don't know but could it be that it has a wet clutch?
Honestly, to really value the parts of an STi that costs money, you have to take the STI to its natural habitat compared to its price range competitors. That means taking it somewhere where you can experience rain, snow, ice, mud and gravel, dry road.. well, anything. What the STI does, is perform incredibly well in all those conditions due to the parts that cost money, but aren't straight up visible from a regular car ride down the highway. It's the unique AWD system with LSDs, it's the killer 6-speed gearbox, it's the rally suspension that is meant to soak up everything while putting down power - not really for eating up perfectly smooth and carved turns like your regular M3 or Audi S/RS line.
- Then on top of that the car just has so much character to it, nothing else feels remotely like it. You have to appreciate the soul of the car to appreciate how much you get for a pretty low price tag.

I love taking 264 out to the lake! I used to rip that all the time on my bike. Have you kept going east of the lake towards Eureka? Those roads are worth the drive.

I keep hearing about GD's interior rattling. Mine doesn't. Maybe I got a good one but whatever. Even if it did rattle I woukd still love it just the same. 2007 was the best year. Best gearing, torsen rear diff, GD, hawkeye headlights.

You really need to find a 2004 Forester XT to review, I would pay money to see what you think about one of those, in any form whether it be properly fast, a corner muncher, or stock even.
What would you say gets the STI to a reliable point that won't blow up on you? Forged heads? idk any help would be appreciated. Looking to get into the scene but I don't want the car to grenade on me 2 months in

Chris,
It really depends on what power goals you have in mind for the car. So much depends on the tune and the supporting mods. You can drop in forged pistons on a stock block and be OK to between 350 - 400 whp before worrying about breaking things. If your block is sleeved then you have that much more leeway in terms of adding power. Stock STI pistons are hypereutectic so they have good wear principles but are more prone to damage due to detonation at higher boost levels if your tune sucks. They actually have a low center of gravity hence why the boxer engine sits very low. Hence why the FRS went with a boxer engine to keep the center of gravity low. Wow dude. wow.
