It’s very frustrating to me as a South African that “feeding the starving kids in Africa” is a marketing ploy but then we can’t even buy these products because it’s sold through Sephora who doesn’t sell to us. Please don’t use us for your marketing

    • @PurpleCurllGurl

As a South African also, I think that's a really damaging perspective to have. "Don't help people who need help because I, a South African who doesn't need assistance, doesn't need help and won't benefit from that help". You do know there are actually starving children in Africa so why would you be apposed to them receiving help, regardless of how it's gotten... It's really self centred.

That's not exactly how tax deductions work. Usually donating part of the profits is simply marketing. You either get more people to buy the products or they'll be willing to pay more for the product and this will increase your profit by a higher amount than the donations are. You might give away 10% of profits but if this increases profits by e.g. 30% you're still making a net profit

HOWEVER, the recyclability claims turned me off from using these products, I work in the resource recovery industry and claiming that 'bio based' plastics are recyclable is quite misleading and goes against all the efforts that waste educators do, when consumers find out this type of packaging is not getting recycled, we are the ones who need to clean up the mess and re-educate them on the reasons why and how it doesn't apply to all packaging. I really hope I'm wrong and that the company consulted with the waste industry and performed tests for collection, sorting and re-processing in the places where these products are being sold that backs up those claims.

as a pharmacist/toxicologist/safety assessor I am not a fan of this brand for many reasons, first they changed the formula on the website without telling why (i have sereen shot proof) and i even asked in comments and in Dm on Instagram (still no answer), second i know hyram is a big advocate for no fragrances but in some of his product he used Benzyl alcohol which is considered a fragrance, and the product is marketed fragrance free, then the first product that contains "rainbow algae" according to his phenoxyethanol trick anything comes after phenoxyethanol is lower than 1% and his star ingredient the "rainbow algae" is under 1% and to be effective according to the supplier study it should be above 1.5%, plus he did the same as the inkeylist with succinic acid labeled as the active but not, rainbow algae extract won't be the ingredient that brightening the skin but actually tranexamic acid that exist but didn't have the spotlight, all of this is so shady in my opinion.
One more thing, if you are so cautious about environment in my opinion it's better not to lunch a skincare brand.

Hyram, who already is a white person living in Hawaii, made some very interesting (uncomfortable) choices with the b role in his ad videos. Additionally, from what I know, recycling bioplastics is *incredibly* difficult and rare, often you need to send it to a very specific facilty. Maybe he found some bioplastic I don't know, but yeah. It would have been nice to see literally any certifications behind this - certified zero waste facilty, b corp, certified fair trade, ANYTHING to back up his very, very big claims. 😕 even just being part of 1% for the planet! That would automatically provide transparency with actual proof, as opposed to all of his big claims of donating to 'save the planet'. Overall, I wouldn't buy it if it wasn't from Hyram, therefore, I am not buying it. Also, the inkey list has horrible transparency and no info on sustainability that I can find anywhere. He could have partnered with a truly sustainable company, like Plaine products. But did this instead, and I am not impressed sadly.

The whole selfless theme gives me creepy vibes simply because he is speaking as if he is giving so much to charity yet it is only 10% and the Ad that is provided for this brand have a theme of white savior. In addition, he complains so much about over pricing and small packaging, yet he is doing the same. I would respect him more if he was not so much of a hypocrite. Out of all the hypocrisy in this brand, calling it "selfless" is probably the most irritating. If he were being selfless, he would use his influence to campaign for already existing, larger brands to become more sustainable. He'd advocate for people to use simple, affordable products and donate the money they save to these kinds of causes. Instead he gets a tax break on unnecessarily expensive products, and gets praise for doing things other brands have been doing for years. One more brand donating 10% of their profits (IF they follow through on that "ambition") and using sugar cane plastic is not going to change the industry. There’s nothing wrong with that, of course, but I cannot stand when influencers pretend to care about the environment or others when all they really care about are the numbers in their bank account.
Don’t get me started on the name. Are you kidding me? What is Selfless about this? Are you giving up all of your profits to help others? No. Are you giving the product away for free to people who need it? No. It’s not selfless. It’s the opposite.

The cleanser is 20€ for 150ml, I can get the Soon Jung 5.5 cleanser, which is REALLY good and is 150ml as well, for 6€. So yeah, the intentions are good and all, but together with donating to charities and help the environment, the brand should allow almost everyone to purchase its products if it's branded as "affordable" by being a byproduct of The Inkey List.

And they benefit from using our languages to market things as exotic and interesting. The irony of using “selfless” as a brand name only highlights his arrogance. I also dislike the packaging, it’s definitely boring and very similar to the Coola packaging. The price point is too expensive for his audience as well, specially for such small products. Coming from someone that works in development projects with international cooperation in developing countries (or so called third world countries), the interventions have to be so carefully prepared to make a proper impact and sadly, most of the times, donations from private companies do more harm that good for so many complex reasons...
