Everyone should know about how hyram is not an esthetician or went to school for any skin care, whatever the dermatologist says is FACT! Hyram is just a skin care hobbiest on TH-cam let’s be real
I believe he did actually go to school for skincare and has worked professionally (under a contract/ for a company) as a "skincare specialist". Though, I do agree with what you're saying. He's not a dermatologist and Dr.Dray is a more reliable source for skincare.
Wait, I didn't know she have phD in molecular biology 😍 wow, suddenly I feel a bit inspired to get serious with the course I'm taking, thank you for mentioning it! 🥰
Hyram himself was very critical of "white-saviorism" in his video about missionary work so I was astonished to see him now commercializing images of African children to sell his own skincare products. Did these African children give permission to have their faces used in advertisements? Were they compensated? Hyram's skincare line is not even sold in Africa!
@@jennistone8740 I agree she was way too easy on him because there’s a lot of issues with some of his products and she tried to avoid those topics. Like how all his highlighted ingredients are at the bottom.
I was hoping that Hyram would never come out with a skincare line because it is just going to hurt him. Overpriced products in tiny bottles targeted towards teens for their parents to pay for. I unfortunately see that not even Hyram is exempt from hypocrisy. Preaching about enviroment and unexpensive products and here he comes with tiny plastic bottles containing virtually nothing. With the most godawful ad.
What’s really hurting him too is that his channel now is only about his brand. He’s moved away from what got him the viewers - reaction videos and reviews. It’ll be interesting to see how that goes long term.
I would say I would by some of his products but not all. It’s pricey cuz I Of the packaging and the ingredients. The sizing is actually pretty standard but for the price u can get similar or better products. However, it’s better than some products that are similar and cost 65 dollars. Yea they are a bit pricey for teens and college students.
I’ll be honest. When I started watching skin care related videos on TH-cam, Hyram was my go-to for information and product recommendations. Then after he mentioned you, Dr. Dray in some of his videos I started watching your content and now you are my go-to. It just seemed like the products I tried that Hyram recommended never worked out for me and I was overspending on skincare. Now with your recommendations, I have a full skin care routine that WORKS and doesn’t cost an arm and a leg. I use CeraVe, Aveeno and La Roche products every day.
@@Chelsea-fo4jy m'y dermatologist suggested it but I don't like it. For instance, vitamin c and hialurónic acid have alcohol as the third ingredient. Very dry
she went easy on him given the marketing, ingredients, pricing, and greenwashing associated with this line. i ultimately agree with her, there's not a lot of ingredients in this line that are necessarily, "harmful" per se, but rather, just over-priced inkey list formulations marked up at a premium price-point because of hyram's name value/recognition. i compare lines like these to, la roche posay for example, and performance, research/development and formulation are not even in the same stratosphere despite similar pricing. the logic that consumers should pay a premium for a smaller amount of product that isn't even innovatory by any stretch because "we like his content on youtube" is marketing at its finest. consumers should pay for effective and well-developed products. kind of ridiculous.
Your opinion is yours, her opinion is hers. I feel like y’all are expecting some big TH-camr to expose him and it’s pathetic to think that dr Dray is a person like that
Believe that Hyram means good and he actually investigates but he's too young and he's not a doctor, nor studying dermatology. Bothers me that influencers are more famous than actual doctors just because they're younger, pretty and have more charismatic tricks under their sleeve than doctors who are of course more scientific.
I mean… it’s not like he did it all by himself. We can’t just ignore the actual specialists/professionals who worked on the products and their formulations.
u guys are so funny. do u know that doctors can lie or not know stuff. u know how many doctors talked bs throughout history and even today. doctors disagreeing on something means that one of them is wrong doesnt it. u people freak out with an academic title its ridiculous and so far away from academic reality. its all about hierarchy and status for u people its gross
That's just how things have always been. Charisma and personality play a huge role in someone's success. Some people just have it in them to attract other people / be popular. And some really intelligent people will be left out because they have less appealing personalities. I'm not mad at Hyram for that, I think what he did is understandable. In all honesty, when you have 4 million people following you, who wouldn't be tempted to do something with it, business-wise ? Everyone needs to earn a buck. He saw an opportunity and he took it. And probably tried his best to come out with something ok. Now as a consumer I have the choice (and the responsibility) to inform myself from different sources before buying something and not just buy everything because Hyram says it's good. I hope he will learn and improve these products over time.
i wonder what people here consider greenwashing. in comparison to true sustainablity for instance. i thought greenwashing was the process of making something not sustainable appear sustainable at least from a marketing point of view. but there are sustainable brands that have been always eager to leave a small footprint. i feel like a lot of folks use that term to discredit rather than a description.
I feel the same. But I watched two reviews of Hyram's skincare line which have both been good. Dr Dray is not negative, she likes most of the products, so why is everyone negative in the comments? I'm genuinely asking, I don't understand?
I never in a million years would purchase this line because of the performative and irresponsible marketing tactics. Using footage of poor kids in Africa to promote the brand was white saviorism at its worst. It's not just cringey - it's unethical.
@@StateofKait That guy has been commenting in all critical replies of the product, alongside someone named "trap and dat". Honestly I think it's the same person 😆😂
Honestly, Paula's Choice and Korean products pack a better punch than SBH. I really want a cocktail of 5+ antioxidants, ceramides, peptides and omegas in my skin care routine. SBH just doesn't cut it for me. While I love the idea of donating to charity, I don't have to put a so-so product on my skin to donate to charity. They are two different things. I can use better quality products from other brands at a better price point and then donate money to my favorite charity.
@@khanguyen4868 Agreed. They have some really powerful antioxidants like Superoxide Dismutase, Astaxanthin and Pinus Pinaster Bark Extract. NIOD survival serums are incredible and are a great value for the price.
My problem with him is calling himself a Skincare Specialist. No, an enthusiast is one thing. A Specialist is another. I worked for a Pediatrician. Doesn’t make me a Pediatric Specialist. Do I know more than the average person, sure. Still doesn’t make me a specialist. Some of us have spent our life dedicated to this. And it’s kind of a slap in the face. I get he gives the disclaimer that he can’t diagnose or treat, but he still uses a title that many of us sacrificed a TON to get.
@VIVIANA CORTES TREVIÑO if you re-read my post I literally said he give the disclaimer. These are just my feelings as someone who sacrificed so much to, as a single teen mom, finish high school early, work all day, going to school at night for almost 2 years, passing my boards. Then doing it all over again in another state. It’s hard not to be a little miffed when I estimate about 6 years of education in the field, for someone claim to be a specialist. Do you see where I’m coming from? The definition of a Specialist is a person who concentrates primarily on a particular subject or activity; a person highly skilled in a specific and restricted field. It’s restricted for a reason because State Boards of Cosmetology regulate Estheticians and Medical Boards regulate dermatologists. The regulations insure you actually have the knowledge to call yourself a specialist in your field.
I had watched a video of his where he talked about the white-saviorism behind mission trips. With that context in mind..His promotional videos for the brand seem... pretty hypocritical
oh yes because white ppl have never made brands or anything /s. i mean his brand is literally called "selfless", looking at all the promotional stuff and greenwashing, it's evident he's trying to look like he's some magnanimous person who cares so much about the environment and people. but it's a brand. he's selling these products to make money, all this "selfless" and charity nonsense is essentially advertisement just to make more money. he's using actual problems in the world and acting like he's helping "fix" them just to make money.
I don't think it's the fact that he's white and selling skincare that's the issue. It's how he is using people from other countries in his videos. I personally found his promotion similar to those commercials where they tell you " with your donation of only $5 a month you can save this child from hunger...." I totally get other people's complaints on how he advertised this.
@@Zelda_Kitty that's literally not what the comment was saying lmao, they were talking about him using "poor African children" to sell his products, no one is stopping white people to make a product 🙄
@@ChocolateMuffin308 We don’t care about skin care “specialists” Bc they don’t have the knowledge or skills people who’ve gone to school for years do. They’re incredibly biased and guilty of promoting ingredients without the studies to back it up like Dr. Dray does, and there’s always a knowledge gap. Why people listen to Hyram and Susan Yara are beyond me.
So basically, Hyram partnered with the Inkey List, added plant ingredients like seaweed and green tea to products the Inkey List was already selling and called it his own skincare line...
Sounds about right! What I love is that footage of him wearing the lab coat and looking oh so serious about his formulations! You know, the boy did next to nothing in terms of creating these products
I seriously don't know why people listen to him ! Then I realized his audience is basically teens who don't know better... it's like me watching every episode of law and order then claiming I'm a lawyer
I'm not paying 30$ for Retinol in Squalane from Hyram when I can pay for the same thing from the Ordinary for 9$. Plus....I get a glass bottle that I can reuse for my essential oils.
I love to save the bottles for watercolor washes . I just bought the resveratrol and ferulic at ULTA for my under eyes . And the lactic acid which I’ve only sparingly tried around my chin .
Honestly was so surprised with his line because it pretty much goes against everythting he's previously mentioned in his videos? Not sure how much control he's had over the whle thing but especialy the African children thing, wtf!??

More of the same $h!t that other brands already have. To me it’s unnecessary and not healthy for the planet, or people’s wallets.
Well there are 40+ different cereal brands, 100+ makeup brands, 100+ shoe brands, and let’s not even get started on the 1,000+ clothing brands out there... do we need any of these? Not really but at least you have plenty of choices to decide what you want to up buy with your money. I’d rather have more options than be forced to choose between only 3 brands.
Exactly. It seems strange to formulate a brand that's meant to help the world when more brands/production of products is harmful to the environment. It's a greenwashed cash grab in my opinion
I wished Hyrum would spend more time getting actual education on skincare, but I guess he’s making too much money without any formal education, so why bother? I think he’s nice, funny, seems conscientious about the environment, but not at all an expert on skincare…
How do you know he’s not doing this? From the videos I’ve watched he’s said he watches a lot of dermatologists on TH-cam and even some dermatologist have mentioned in their videos that Hyram has reached out to them with question or needing opinions on different topics/issues. He’s also never said he had professional training so is it his fault if people are assuming he is someone that he never said he was?

Used to enjoy Hyram's videos but his promo videos feel very dishonest to me since he doesn't even mention the 10% :/ feels like he wants us to imagine a higher percentage.
the 10% to me really looked like an afterthought. it's listed in a little blog post? type section on the website, not front and centre, and they only said they had the "ambition" to donate that much after they started getting a lot of heat. i think they're going to try to back out of it soon
@@sunscreenhoarder6558 Exactly! It's very difficult to even find the statement, and the 10% isn't promised. I would be surprised if they don't manage to donate 10%, but due to his marketing I'm still not impressed. If he were proud of 10% he'd be upfront about it.
I was expecting a higher percentage tbh, I mean I’ve seen even indie small businesses donating 10% of profits for pride month and things. For a company who’s whole branding is philanthropy/saving the environment you’d think it would be like 50% of profits
The only product I bought from this line was the Mandelic acid serum because I’ve been needing a good gentle exfoliant in my skin care routine. I’m enjoying this product so far. I have very sensitive skin and get rosacea on my cheeks if my skin gets too irritated. I find that it doesn’t at all irritate my skin and my face feels so smooth. 😊
Brilliant thanks! I just purchased this second hand because of the same reason and Dr Vaneeta Rattan's products are very prohibitive for me price wise. She recommended mandelic acid for coloured skin. So I'm glad that it's working for you, hope it does for me too! 😊
I saw these products in Sephora in Germany. I think there are so many good brands here that offer more for that price, I couldn't bring myself to splurge on a 30 ml tube for over 20 euros. I rather invest the same or even less money in La roche posay, Eucerin or Avene products that I've personally tested for years and know work for my skin. But as Dr. Dray says if you want to support Hyram and the cause it makes sense. Everyone has different priorities.
I think it’s not fair to compare it to brands that are not by any means ecological, cruelty free or anything like that. However, I understand your point! We have a lot of brands that have great products and are actually cruelty free for much lower prices!
@@ellenvitoria6144 if he actually wanted to be ecological he wouldn't make a brand in the first place. not even to people in their twenties, imo. probably more like 12-14 year olds who are just getting into skincare, since he's very much a beginner channel and that seems to be who he targets his content at most. people in their 20s are usually already on much stronger actives than just 0.5% sa and 3% mandelic acid, ya know? but the price range is something i feel only middle class people can afford and i certainly don't know anybody in their twenties rn who i'd consider middle class.

Hi! I read the information on his website, and it says that his Mandelic Acid serum contains 3% Mandelic Acid, and his Salicylic Acid serum contains 0.5% Salicylic Acid. I've expressed my opinion about his products a few times. For me, i just think this is another skincare products that we don't need. We have a lot of better options out there with more reasonable price. I personally don't want to spend more than $10 for a skincare product at this point. But this is just me, considering i live in Southeast Asia where skincare products are very affordable and accessible.
Thanks for the review- you nailed it at the end with the summary of having better products in the market that are more affordable- I don’t believe any of these products will be replacing my current skincare routine
Were all waiting for someone to rip hyram apart for creating a skin care line. Tbh, I was too a little bit. But I appreciate the professionalism of this review. There is positive bias and negative bias. I think we're all looking at this through a lens of negativity. Sure, we don't need another skincare line, but, he's following a career path that WE as an audience put him on. Thanks for just looking at the products and not bringing in ANY kind of bias. I personally won't be purchasing it, but atleast the products seem thought out, and, like you said, not another maracuja magic voodoo facial mist.
I agree with this so much. Honestly, I'm disappointed in the line and won't be purchasing, but I think many people are just WAY too ready to rip on Hyram for any little thing. There are ABSOLUTELY valid criticisms about the products and marketing and I'm glad people are aware, but I think Dr. Dray really struck that good balance between honesty and optimism!
I wouldn't blame his TH-cam audience for him releasing a line. He's perfectly capable of simply not creating one. Fans asking for a skincare line are not responsible for a grown man's actions.
Hyram is just another example of how the internet loves to give platforms to just about anyone. He has stated multiple times he not a licensed esthetician or dermatologist. But the people rather follow him then actual licensed people. People were always in his comments saying “he should make his own brand” and now he has. Just like every other unlicensed influencer lol. Ironic Edit: and I understand that thousands of us, including myself can’t afford dermatologists. But there are dermatologists on TH-cam. Licensed ones that aren’t trying to promote just about anything.
You can be the most educated person in the world, but if you are not entertaining then people are not going to watch you, that's just how it works and the value of entertainment should not be overlooked, imo he is a great intro into the skincare world with easy to digest concentrated bits of helpful information that he gets from professionals and presents in an interesting way, as long as that gets more people into using sunscreen and avoiding harsh scrubs - I'm all for it.
There is a reason Dermatologists sacrificed 13/14 years of their lives to be committed to skincare, rather just someone who is popular and calls themselves a 'skincare professional'. I'd never buy a celebrity range of anything
@@morgianasartre6709 i do agree he’s a great intro into skin care! And i agree with everything you’re saying. @Abdul Basit We can stop creating skin care lines and also donate to charities. We don’t need more products on the line in order to donate to charities that’s just silly. Sure it gives some money to these causes, but there’s already charities and organizations supporting these causes and the formulas aren’t even innovative enough for me to justify buying it because I’d likely throw out half the bottle which would go straight into a landfill and wasted. I honestly don’t get the point, and that’s probably because it’s a cash grab more than trying to be sustainable. It’s kind of a waste to create a whole new brand of Non-innovative formulas that are already existing on the market when he could just start a fundraising campaign for sustainable causes or team up with a line that already exists. It just comes off as wasteful and self-centered to me. If you have something new to bring to the skin care world by all means create a line, but don’t copy old formulas and then slap sustainability causes on the price tag and think you’ve done some thing new or worthwhile. If sustainability is what he cared about, it would be the focus of his project. But it isn’t it’s his own line that is the focus of his project.
I would rather hear a non biased opinion from an actual dermatologist… than listen to everyone else, and I also listen to my own skin and use ingredients that benefits me. I love her honesty and her opinions have made my skin amazing due to her suggestions!!! I take her opinions seriously
Calling a brand selfless when its going to get you rich and not the people who actually create the physical product and ingredients, while also damaging the environment since the best product to buy for the environment is the product you don’t buy.... donating a few dollars to causes does not outweigh the damage. Just don’t call it selfless and act like it’s a charity product when it’s not
Yes, reducing waste is best for the environment but this is aimed at people who *do* buy skincare. I was surprised by the small product line. Like Dr Dray said, there could've been so much more. The name is off putting to me for the virtue signaling alone so, I'm not buying this stuff either. But it's not accurate to say that Hyram is making all the money and the Inkey List isn't. Their name is on the bottle too and they're using Hyram to make money. It's a symbiotic relationship that makes charitable donations to his pet causes- that's why it costs more. If everybody gets a slice of pie, you need more pie.
UPDATE: this line has been on 50% discount at every sale at Sephora. From memorial day, to point multiplier days, to a mini skincare sale in which every day a new group of brands were on sale, even for two days AFTER that specific sale ended. I don't think his skincare is particularly bad. My impression was: "selflessly making oneself hundreds of thousands of dollars" The fact is that Hyram could probably raise as much money from charity streams without creating waste. And using more affordable and less skincare products in general and making your own donation makes more sense. Even though I don't really agree with the idea of charity. It has been a practice for thousands of years to make sure to keep poor people around so that you could seem charitable by giving them money without really helping them. As long as western imperialism and white supremacist organisations like NATO, the EU, and the USA exist, no amount of charity will fix the issues in the developing world

I also can't think about a good reason why they didn't make campaigns with the charities and how the products would help certain projects. It's not hard to make the young people of Gen Z excited about their own skin health and the environment at the same time. Gen Z is already a really environment conscious generation.
I'm happy for Hyram and wish him success, I am a fan of his but I will not be buying his products! I already had a list of products I wanted to try and I ended up buying those instead! There are already so many great products out there that are readily available. I hope that the products are great and help others but they aren't for me. The only thing I would consider buying is the cleanser but the ingredients aren't special enough for me, I will stick to my Krave Beauty one! Thanks for the review!
Thank you for your honest run down of the ingredients and input on the less studied ingredients, though I wish I could find a review where someone actually used the products correctly for more than a couple uses besides James. In the instruction videos, Hyram says to squeeze from the end of the tube to get precise drops.
Cassandra Bankson mentioned the getting the products out part. Even after she saw the instruction videos she still felt they weren't the best packaging.
If I wanted to donate I'd donate to a charity of my choosing without giving the middleman a portion. Using donations as some kind of strong point to lead with in marketing is ... leaving a bad taste in my mouth. There are better ways to go about it, and calling the line selfless... does that mean he is not profiting from this at all lol. Cmon
Chantecaille are, in my opinion, the worst. They charge silly prices for their products and preach that they'll be making donations through the sales. Which, I assume, they do. However, people need to understand that it's NOT the company who is making these donations (even though they will acquire a tax break because of this) it's the buyer who is making the donation - every single time! Because of Chantecaille's pricing structure, their profits are totally unaffected. They never make a loss because of the "very generous" donations. I can only assume that Hyram is making some profit, otherwise how will his brand continue.
The neutrogena fragrance free rapid wrinkle repair is the best retinol I've ever used. I love retinol as an acne sufferer, so I've tried a ton of different products. The neutrogena one is so moisturizing, it doesn't irritate my skin at all, it works, and it's only $20 for a large jar that lasts me for a while. Using it with hyaluronic acid has been great for my oily acne prone skin.
I love it too! Especially I the winter months when im a little dry but still works on my oily skin. I use it with niacinimide and hyuloronic acid at night :)
Thank you for your unbiased and honest review. It means so much. I am not interested in this line. Korean skincare already fulfills my needs at much lower prices.
Thanks to Dr Dray for mentioning Hyrams video about his experience with humanitarianism that is posted on his selfless TH-cam channel. The video made me change my thoughts on Hyrams intentions. I still won’t be supporting the brand and will continue to use my money to support in other ways but appreciate this video.
That’s cool !!!! Anything else we need to know u do to make us think ur a good person ??? Do u give to the homlees too ?? What ?? Oh yeh let’s keep that to ourselves ✋
I won’t be buying anything from SBH. The green washing, the undisclosed partnerships, the white savior act, and the 15+ minute long promo videos for each individual product really put me off. I unsubbed from Hyram after the second promo video.
Undisclosed partnerships? Which video did he upload not letting his audience know that it was a "sponsored video" ? I would like to go watch it. Because I have watched most of his videos , and noticed in every single video he stated he was not a dermatologist, and the sponsored videos he always stated that it was sponsored. Which was far in between. He actually didn't do alot of sponsored videos atleast from what I seen.
@@Squishy_0402 He's disclosed when specific videos are sponsored, but from what I understand he's also had separate partnerships with brands such as Youth to the People in which he was being paid to generally promote their products, and he didn't make that clear to his audience. BlueMJ did a video on this, and there's a pinned comment that includes the brands who have confirmed paid partnerships with him, if you want to check it out. It may very well be that he genuinely loves all the products from those brands that he's promoted, but it does make me question his motivations a little. Especially because he also did a video for another channel (can't remember which one now) where he went through his own skincare routine, and literally none of it was stuff that he recommends to his viewers 😬
I am grateful to Hyram for introducing me to ingredients and becoming more interested in my skincare routine. Because of his videos I have been introduced to the wonderful Dr Dray and a few other dermatologists. With that being said, after listening to board certified Dermatologists I had to unfollow Hyram because while I appreciate his enthusiasm for skincare, he’s not certified or professionally educated in skincare/skin issues/etc. I wish him nothing but the best but I likely won’t be supporting this line. I’ll be curious to see how far the brand grows and the general reception.
$20 for 5 oz of cleanser seems more than middle of the road. And having to purchase more often would just produce more waste so that’s not really helping the environment.
This is the most educational skincare channel on TH-cam. I love your analyses! Thank you. For my "extras" other than my inexpensive cleaners, I usually buy products from Tree of Life Beauty, a small company out of Crossville, TN. I'd love one day for you to review their products. They are very cost effective and seem to do well and be fairly non-irritating for my almost 65 years old skin. I love their Retinol and Niacinamide serums. I tried those after I tried The Ordinary and haven't gone back yet. I have used the Aquation for my moisturizer for awhile now, on your recommendation and it's really nice.
I love how Dr Dray’s reviews are always professional, serious and very matter of fact. She throws zero shade, just serves straight up facts and let’s the viewer draw their own conclusions.
I appreciate that she sticks to facts and the ingredients. Hearing how it feels to her helps too because I will not use any product that feels horrible on my skin, no matter how good it might be for you.
I’m scared to watch. I notice that you’re showing us your “feels” even more, these past couple of months. SO refreshing, so real. I get the feeling that you’re being even more brave, more “YOU”. Show us how to do it, Andrea!
Why would I pay more for “Selfless” when I can buy The Inkey List. It’s a pointless wasteful line. If he wanted to be environmentally friendly he would have found another way to make money.
Found another way to make money, such as....??? It's so delusional to critique the *skincare line* being wasteful and not environmentally friendly when literally ANY BRAND of ANYTHING created by ANYONE is not going to be any more (or less) ecologically friendly What do you expect him to do? Raise money with a clothing line? Because that's not ecologically friendly either. There's only so many methods he could've chosen and he chose to raise awareness via skincare because skincare is one of his hobbies. Which, makes sense. Should he just ask people to donate point blank period? Because that simply wouldn't have worked in the first place.
Let me be honest I would never buy anything by "the skin care expert". Also what is up with those prices? He is no Paula's choice skincare. This is only another cash grab story to me. Easy pass!
It’s a marketing ploy. His audience is a bunch of idiots. So they will buy into it. .. I say that because he’s a guy with google - no education in skincare. He googles ingredients then makes a video about it and people take his word 🤣🤣 they al deserve what they get
@@miac6262 honestly he should have stuck with promoting the ingredients rather than talking about saving the world in every advertisement. This guy isn’t even an esthetician or dermatologist yet he gave himself the title of “skincare specialist”. What does that even mean?
I think Hyrems 2nd channel is also called Selfless. For me the cleanser is the only product that sounds good for my old “wiser” skin as I have yet to find anything anywhere anyhow that does not leave my skin feeling a bit dried out. Thank you for the review! You are literally one of maybe 5 “TH-camrs” I trust info from ❤️
Hey what’s up with the negative comments on Hyram. Dr. Dray did not negatively review the products at all except they are a bit pricey, possibly for such and such reasons . We don’t have to dislike Hyram to like Dr. Dray or vice versa.
So as someone who bought the product this makes me feel more certain about my opinion. Over priced (look at the sizes compared to other mid tier brands) and a little too basic with little percentage of everything with ingredients that can cause more irritation even to those that are replaced with. Idk, this feels like a flop to me but I do wish him the best. It’s hard to eat your words when now you’re the INE behind the wheel and see why certain brands do certain things. Big talk with little studies. Man, not gonna lie, I’m pretty disappointed and feel used. Oh well, back to Paulas choice when I finish his products. :/ agh! Man, just ugh… :/ he can only get better from here …
Don’t feel bad. His marketing team knew what they were doing. The whole “I’m saving those poor black children in Africa” was a deliberate choice. He sucks you in thinking oh that’s so good of him, when he’s really just marking the price up and donating that extra money with HIS company name so HE gets a tax break. The green washing and white savior complex was exactly what his younger audience wants to hear. But when you step back, and the curtain is moved, you see it all for what it really is. Congratulations to you for seeing all this. Even though you bought them, you won’t be fooled again with these tactics if another brand you use tries them.
I was really looking forward when he was going to drop his skincare line. But when i saw the prices, it kinds of put me off as well because it’s not CHEAP at all. Like it’s even a lot more expensive than Cerave. 🥲🥲
His products is just not that impressive to me. I was pretty underwhelmed when reading the ingredients. They're not as intriguing as Krave Beauty or other products that is good and much cheaper. The products are fine , I just wouldn't throw money on them.
@@Meegoreng100 I'm not an expert but I think the same way you'd only expect the flavors of the ingredients you put in while cooking is probably a good analogy to what you'd also only expect the effects of what ingredients and the amount of it on a skin care product, so yeah, seeing it that way, it is going to be the most important aspect of it, the ingredients will dictate how the skincare product will work
Everyone should know about how hyram is not an esthetician or went to school for any skin care, whatever the dermatologist says is FACT!

I don't see anyone accusing her of being mean.

Did he say it?
I haven't seen anyone say that...
Not gonna buy his products no matter what but I really hope he speaks on this
Exactly. Hyram's skincare line is full or hypocrisy. Definitely not buying it.
I don’t think people really ever ask for permission, and that’s so problematic and hinges on exploitation.
Does he donate any of the proceeds to Subsaharan African charities?
That is so gross. 😷
The only reviewer I trust, because she is a DOCTOR
I so agree with you…..
So agree!
Doctorly gave a review that was a biased waste - Dr. Dray gave a very honest unbiased one.
There’s only like 6 decent skin reviewers on TH-cam and they’re all doctors or scientists.
YES!! I do like watching Hyram's videos and I'm happy for him, but Dr. Dray is the person I actually TRUST and look to for honest product reviews!
SO many people have been reviewing Hyram’s line and tbh, THIS is the review I really care about 😱

The ONLY review that matters.
She was so easy on him though. I know I’m a little opinionated and negatively biased towards Hyram but I was hoping she would go in a little harder.
Agree. I felt disappointed when I found out he was releasing a brand. Just felt too soon and more of a money grab.
What’s really hurting him too is that his channel now is only about his brand. He’s moved away from what got him the viewers - reaction videos and reviews. It’ll be interesting to see how that goes long term.

Doctorly's the most goated channel out there but this is a great too
she went easy on him given the marketing, ingredients, pricing, and greenwashing associated with this line. i ultimately agree with her, there's not a lot of ingredients in this line that are necessarily, "harmful" per se, but rather, just over-priced inkey list formulations marked up at a premium price-point because of hyram's name value/recognition. i compare lines like these to, la roche posay for example, and performance, research/development and formulation are not even in the same stratosphere despite similar pricing. the logic that consumers should pay a premium for a smaller amount of product that isn't even innovatory by any stretch because "we like his content on youtube" is marketing at its finest. consumers should pay for effective and well-developed products. kind of ridiculous.
Exactly what I was thinking
💯
Totally! I'm surprised she didn't address the green washing, the doing a skin care line that pretty much portrays the white survivor trope..
Using poor black children in his ads is the worst of it all.
Exactly
I mean… it’s not like he did it all by himself. We can’t just ignore the actual specialists/professionals who worked on the products and their formulations.
But you can also say that about every celeb who comes out with a makeup line. They’re not makeup artists 🤦♀️
u guys are so funny. do u know that doctors can lie or not know stuff. u know how many doctors talked bs throughout history and even today. doctors disagreeing on something means that one of them is wrong doesnt it. u people freak out with an academic title its ridiculous and so far away from academic reality. its all about hierarchy and status for u people its gross
As someone who was put off by the greenwashing and cringey marketing, I really appreciate you keeping it drama free 😎
Dr dray keeps it simple, we ask for a review, she gives us a review, the end. Thats how it should be
Truth🙌
i wonder what people here consider greenwashing. in comparison to true sustainablity for instance. i thought greenwashing was the process of making something not sustainable appear sustainable at least from a marketing point of view. but there are sustainable brands that have been always eager to leave a small footprint. i feel like a lot of folks use that term to discredit rather than a description.
I feel the same. But I watched two reviews of Hyram's skincare line which have both been good. Dr Dray is not negative, she likes most of the products, so why is everyone negative in the comments? I'm genuinely asking, I don't understand?

SBH just doesn't cut it for me. While I love the idea of donating to charity, I don't have to put a so-so product on my skin to donate to charity. They are two different things.
He works for a skincare brand though, so that could be his title within the company??
@@MeghanOfficialMusic when used within that company yes. Outside that company, no. He’s only a specialist in regards to that company’s products.

The definition of a Specialist is
a person who concentrates primarily on a particular subject or activity; a person highly skilled in a specific and restricted field.
With that context in mind..His promotional videos for the brand seem... pretty hypocritical
exactly what i was thinking about
yeah he should've just changed his skin color real quick
oh yes because white ppl have never made brands or anything /s. i mean his brand is literally called "selfless", looking at all the promotional stuff and greenwashing, it's evident he's trying to look like he's some magnanimous person who cares so much about the environment and people. but it's a brand. he's selling these products to make money, all this "selfless" and charity nonsense is essentially advertisement just to make more money. he's using actual problems in the world and acting like he's helping "fix" them just to make money.
I don't think it's the fact that he's white and selling skincare that's the issue. It's how he is using people from other countries in his videos. I personally found his promotion similar to those commercials where they tell you " with your donation of only $5 a month you can save this child from hunger...."

@@sunscreenhoarder6558 Exactly! It's very difficult to even find the statement, and the 10% isn't promised. I would be surprised if they don't manage to donate 10%, but due to his marketing I'm still not impressed. If he were proud of 10% he'd be upfront about it.
Nothing was ever promised
All was said was "goals". Never compromising to anything
I was expecting a higher percentage tbh, I mean I’ve seen even indie small businesses donating 10% of profits for pride month and things. For a company who’s whole branding is philanthropy/saving the environment you’d think it would be like 50% of profits

That was what Cassandra Bankson said in her review.
not even to people in their twenties, imo. probably more like 12-14 year olds who are just getting into skincare, since he's very much a beginner channel and that seems to be who he targets his content at most. people in their 20s are usually already on much stronger actives than just 0.5% sa and 3% mandelic acid, ya know? but the price range is something i feel only middle class people can afford and i certainly don't know anybody in their twenties rn who i'd consider middle class.

Hi min ❤️
Your video was great.
Dray really struck that good balance between honesty and optimism!
finally a comment not tearing Hyram to shreds😆
This is well said
Someone else also left a great comment saying we should review the products not the individual. 👏👏👏👏
Ironic
Edit: and I understand that thousands of us, including myself can’t afford dermatologists.
Abdul Basit how would all these changes happen? Idk, fundraising

Calling a brand selfless when its going to get you rich and not the people who actually create the physical product and ingredients, while also damaging the environment since the best product to buy for the environment is the product you don’t buy.... donating a few dollars to causes does not outweigh the damage. Just don’t call it selfless and act like it’s a charity product when it’s not
That is commodity fetishism after all
My thoughts exactly. The name is nothing but a pathetic attempt at pandering. "By selfless by buying yourself out overpriced product."
He gives major white savior vibes.
@@barbieblue3336 thank you I knew my brain lost it for that word
Yes, reducing waste is best for the environment but this is aimed at people who *do* buy skincare. I was surprised by the small product line. Like Dr Dray said, there could've been so much more. The name is off putting to me for the virtue signaling alone so, I'm not buying this stuff either. But it's not accurate to say that Hyram is making all the money and the Inkey List isn't. Their name is on the bottle too and they're using Hyram to make money. It's a symbiotic relationship that makes charitable donations to his pet causes- that's why it costs more. If everybody gets a slice of pie, you need more pie.
I need your objective opinion because for me it's overpriced for the size of the products
Hope the review helps

From memorial day, to point multiplier days, to a mini skincare sale in which every day a new group of brands were on sale, even for two days AFTER that specific sale ended. I don't think his skincare is particularly bad. But the way he is doing the marketing with his line, especially the 'selfless' thing is quite hypocrite after all that video talking about missionary work. My impression was: "selflessly making oneself hundreds of thousands of dollars"
The fact is that Hyram could probably raise as much money from charity streams without creating waste. And using more affordable and less skincare products in general and making your own donation makes more sense. Even though I don't really agree with the idea of charity. It has been a practice for thousands of years to make sure to keep poor people around so that you could seem charitable by giving them money without really helping them. As long as western imperialism and white supremacist organisations like NATO, the EU, and the USA exist, no amount of charity will fix the issues in the developing world
I said this on Cassandra's video review and i will say (edited) it again here:
as a pharmacist/toxicologist/safety assessor I am not a fan of this brand for many reasons, first they changed the formula on the website without telling why (i have sereen shot proof) and i even asked in comments and in Dm on Instagram (still no answer), second i know hyram is a big advocate for no fragrances but in some of his product he used Benzyl alcohol which is considered a fragrance and also can be used as preservatives and according to EMA annex III it is consider one of 26 fragrance allergens , then the first product that contains "rainbow algae" according to "HIS" phenoxyethanol trick anything comes after phenoxyethanol is lower than 1% and his star ingredient the "rainbow algae" is under 1% and to be effective according to the supplier study it should be above 1.5%, plus he did the same as the inkeylist with succinic acid labeled as the active but not, rainbow algae extract won't be the ingredient that brightening the skin but actually tranexamic acid that exist but didn't have the spotlight, all of this is so shady in my opinion.
One more thing, if you are so cautious about environment in my opinion it's better not to lunch a skincare brand.

Cmon
"charity donation" by big brands is code for massive tax exemptions in the US lol he's certainly profiting lots
Yeah, even leaving that drama aside, his products seem to have nothing out of the ordinary which will make people change their current routines
There are a bunch of middlemen to be paid. All legitimate, but that's what makes the consumer pay more.

Why would I pay more for “Selfless” when I can buy The Inkey List. It’s a pointless wasteful line. If he wanted to be environmentally friendly he would have found another way to make money.
Honestly nobody is telling you to buy it either.
I don't understand the wedgies and why people are so quick to defend who they stan from a perfectly valid opinion 🤦♀️
His followers are forever asking him to do it soooo...he did I guess.
Found another way to make money, such as....???
It's so delusional to critique the *skincare line* being wasteful and not environmentally friendly when literally ANY BRAND of ANYTHING created by ANYONE is not going to be any more (or less) ecologically friendly
What do you expect him to do?
Raise money with a clothing line? Because that's not ecologically friendly either. There's only so many methods he could've chosen and he chose to raise awareness via skincare because skincare is one of his hobbies. Which, makes sense.
Should he just ask people to donate point blank period?
Because that simply wouldn't have worked in the first place.
Let me be honest I would never buy anything by "the skin care expert". Also what is up with those prices? He is no Paula's choice skincare. This is only another cash grab story to me. Easy pass!
Right overhyped and so pricy because it’s hyram behind the line
Yep i just cancelled my order. His retinol doesn’t have enough to be effective.
Like do we really need another skincare line offering exactly the same shit as other lines? No more celeb/influencer skincare PLEASE.
@@tareqelkhoury celeb/influencer make up is annoying too.
Lol the irony Paulas Choice isn't even a dermatologist
I don’t get what his skincare line has to do with saving kids in Africa lmao
It’s a marketing ploy. His audience is a bunch of idiots. So they will buy into it. .. I say that because he’s a guy with google - no education in skincare. He googles ingredients then makes a video about it and people take his word 🤣🤣 they al deserve what they get
@@miac6262 honestly he should have stuck with promoting the ingredients rather than talking about saving the world in every advertisement. This guy isn’t even an esthetician or dermatologist yet he gave himself the title of “skincare specialist”. What does that even mean?
@@lifeisrosyyy Basically it means that he watches a few videos by dermatologists and has started to believe himself as knowledgeable as one
That’s surprising to hear, especially because he talked about why he stopped doing humanitarian work like that.
I hate his Saviour energy 😹
I think Hyrems 2nd channel is also called Selfless. For me the cleanser is the only product that sounds good for my old “wiser” skin as I have yet to find anything anywhere anyhow that does not leave my skin feeling a bit dried out. Thank you for the review! You are literally one of maybe 5 “TH-camrs” I trust info from ❤️
Bruh I was on the edge of my seat! I can feel how so very careful Dr Dray is with this review LMAO
Hey what’s up with the negative comments on Hyram. Dr. Dray did not negatively review the products at all except they are a bit pricey, possibly for such and such reasons . We don’t have to dislike Hyram to like Dr. Dray or vice versa.
Thank you! They give different perspectives that I appreciate for different purposes. I don't know why that's difficult for so many to grasp.
People got done tearing down all the makeup you tubers so they have moved in to the skincare you tubers now.
@@xxxxMonkeyGirlxxxx This is sad to see. It seemed relatively less dramatic before
So as someone who bought the product this makes me feel more certain about my opinion.
Thanks for the feedback - I resisted buying anything myself, and you’re the first “person” (ie not an influencer) I’ve read anything from.
His products is just not that impressive to me. I was pretty underwhelmed when reading the ingredients. They're not as intriguing as Krave Beauty or other products that is good and much cheaper. The products are fine , I just wouldn't throw money on them.
Right? there are literally nothing outstanding and you can get the same results with less expensive skincare.
The thing with ingredients.. does that really should be the end all of wether its good or not?
@@Meegoreng100 I'm not an expert but I think the same way you'd only expect the flavors of the ingredients you put in while cooking is probably a good analogy to what you'd also only expect the effects of what ingredients and the amount of it on a skin care product, so yeah, seeing it that way, it is going to be the most important aspect of it, the ingredients will dictate how the skincare product will work
unrelated but omg the unusual hilichurl xDD
