    Or he simply considered love-potion the most dangerous amongst the four potions, because it is basically the magic equivalent of a rape-drug.

    • @BlueSparxLPs
      @BlueSparxLPs 7 ปีที่แล้ว +62

      Even worse, really. Date-rape drugs are known to make the person more suggestive and submissive, whereas love potion goes beyond that and gives the person an irresistible lust toward the person.

    • @BlueSparxLPs
      @BlueSparxLPs 7 ปีที่แล้ว +87

      Desdemona, I disagree. I've heard so many rape victims say that they would have rather died as opposed to living with the trauma it cased them. Death is not the worst thing that can happen to a person. The worst things are the horrors that you carry with you for the rest of your life.

      slughorn doesnt think people taking advantage of each other with love potion is the worst thing in the world

Besides her lineage I think she still could've been in Slytherin by her ambition. It's kinda ironic how the Founders had a better grasp of consent than literally everyone in the Harry Potter books that Harry came into contact with. Boy tries to enter girls' dorms? Gets ejected down a slide. However, Lockheart suggested that students ask Snape to help brew "love potions", the Twins sold them in bulk, and Molly Weasley bragged about making SEVERAL as a student. (Also, all the characters were kinda horrible to Fleur simply because she was pretty? Like...they legit sexually harassed her.) And...yeah. Merope using that thing as a daterape drug gets overlooked too often...sorta like the Mauraders' sadistic torment of other students (not just Severus)?

    • @lindenshepherd6085
      @lindenshepherd6085 6 ปีที่แล้ว +62

      Anonymous Fellow : Quite true. I never noticed that bit about the founders, but honestly I did not care for Merope's actions, especially considering her past. The way she treated Tom Riddle Sr. leads me to think much of her choices regarding her love for him involved control because of how her father treated her. She was not an overwhelmingly good person and allowed past indignities to affect and change how she handled her relationships, which to me only emphasizes the danger of Amortentia.

    First, it's pretty clear that Voldy's mother was not 'bad' at magic but she was abused and ridiculed which aligns up with what we know about magic and mental health from the books and Fantastic Beasts. I think its just the simple horror of being able to force anyone into doing your bidding as effectively (and more easily) as the imperious curse

  • @natetso3307
    @natetso3307 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1349

    Merope Gaunt, died young, believed to be a Squib, abused by her family for lack of magical ability...
    Wait... Wait a second... WAIT A SECOND
    I think Merope was an obscurial!!!
    Think about it. Merope was thought to be a Squib by her father. However, in the memory Dumbledore shows to Harry, she is able to preform magic with her wand, though not with control or with the desired intent. It should be noted that Credence, the only well-documented obscurial, was also thought to be a Squib by Graves/Grindlewald. She was tortured and constantly put down by her father and brother, just as Credence was by his "mother". She died at a young age, but a very old age for an obscurial, so this part is a stretch, but not overly much, as Credence (and possibly Ariana Dumbledore as well) lived well past the perceived limit of an obscurial's lifespan, and he is the only really well-documented obscurial we have.
    Not to mention the child Merope brought into the world. How could a young orphan, raised by Muggles, and a half-Muggle himself, possibly grow to be the most powerful Dark Wizard of all time? Sure, he is the heir of Salazar Slytherin, but only half, and there is no other heir of Slytherin (to my knowledge) that has ever come close to matching their ancestor's power, when Voldemort himself surpassed that power. How could he possibly have done it? Unless his mother passed on to him the dark power of the obscurus that was growing within her just as he was. Did Voldemort tap into the obscurus's power before he was even born? I would say yes. I would say this is the secret to Voldemort's power, and how he was able to mark himself as the most powerful Dark Wizard of all time, by mastering the unknown power of the darkest and most powerful creature in the Wizarding World.
    Someone get some Ravenclaws over here to review this. I'd also love it if this could be seen by those Slytherins up above the towel, or even made into a video ;) Great video guys, love the theory (even if it probably wouldn't work with mine) and keep it up!

    Merope wasn't the last heir of Slytherin. She had a brother who lived long enough to get blamed for the death of the Riddles. Also, isn't love potion pretty readily available? I mean Fred and George legally sell it in Diagon Alley so couldn't Merope easily have gone to Knockturn Alley and find a shady potions dealer for it?

    • @nguyenyen3584

      We don't know that for sure but even then, there are different variants of love potion. For instance, Molly Weasly brewed one when she was at school and she's never said to be a potions master. Even if Merope is bad at magic, for all we know, she could have had the know-how to make a rudimentary love potion.

She didn't go to school so there is no way in hell she could brew that by herself buuut she may have heard about the amazingly talented student that just graduated and was on his way to becoming the youngest potions master..... she totally could have found him and said who she was and that she needed help. Now idk what exactly a potions master does outside teaching but it makes sense to me that they charge people to make potions for them. I am sure her name would have earned her a favor such as supplying her with love potion....basically Horace was her dealer.

      ObsessedGamer ~ whether you consider someone to be an idiot or not is your opinion and based on your own level of intelligence (this does not always indicate superior intelligence btw, since we all know about the dunning-kruger effect). However, for a single mum to casually put together 7 books for her child going through high school, one for each year, using age appropriate content and vocabulary, increasing the complexity of the plots appropriately for the perceived age per year and to demonstrate an innate understanding of the inner workings of a child and their inter-personal relationships during each year of development throughout those formative years is pretty impressive to most. As a mum I can honestly say this woman's understanding of children on many levels is spot on. She also has an exceptional grasp of the English language and has a creative ability very few could compete with. If that makes her an idiot then I aspire to be as idiotic as her one day :)

      Or, you know, that if you follow the use of a love potion to it's conclusion as did Merope, it´s actually rape. And if you do this for a prolonged period of time, you´re essentially creating a sex slave, which is absolutely vile and I don´t see how it is any different from, say, the imperius curse, which is one of the unforgivable curses precisely because you are taking away someone´s free will and bodily autonomy. It's almost like the imperius curse in potion form.

      yslrg It's unforgivable because of the intent required to cast it.
      The Cruciatus Curse requires true desire to cause pain and suffering to cast. It therefore makes sense that the Killing and Imperius Curses require true desire to murder, and to control and essentially own someone, respectively.
      And it's because they all require such intent to cast that they’re unforgivable. That’s the common thread running through them, and explains why the Killing Curse, something that causes instant, painless death is unforgivable, but something like Confringo, that can cause a prolonged, painful death, isnt. It’s because of the intent needed to cast them.

    I personally think that Slughorn called love potion the most dangerous potion in the room because of other reason.
    Other potions do not alter who you are, your actions. That one elixir that makes you speak only truth can be dangerous, but not as dangerous as a person in love. If potion is strong enough the affected will do anything for their 'true love'. Which can lead to serious manipulations with people that can affect entire countries. Remember when Ron ate love potion by accident? He would do anything Romilda asks just to show how much he loves her. That could happen to any person of any importance.
    Leave all my savings in your bank vault? Of course, my love.
    Give you a look on those super secret government documents I have access to? As you wish, darling
    Kill someone? No problem, my love.
    You didn't order any fries but you want mine now? They are yours now.

    Just discovered the channel and have been doing a deep dive into the Harry Potter videos. When reading the books, I think the worst self realization I had was that Slughorn was extremely relatable to me, in that he viewed knowledge as awesome and liked sharing his knowledge with others. He was smart, he was proud of it, and if someone asked for his help, he of course was going to help them, even if the knowledge was frowned upon. Because... I think he hoped for the best from people. He was definitely a Slytherin and knew the value of networking and whatnot, but he also just... Seemed to think most people were curious for curiosity's sake. So he helped people, shared his knowledge, maintaining good friendships and all that... And then some of those people did awful things and he felt it was all his fault for being so... Nice. Not being as suspicious as he should be. I myself do this so often despite being very aware of people's manipulative tendencies. But you just... Want to believe in people, you know? I was also sorted into Slytherin via Pottermore (and every other random quiz, haha), and I just... Really relate to Slughorn's good qualities, and I know that I probably would have done the exact things he did. Sharing information and helping people, only for it to backfire. Stereotypes of Slytherin don't sound like this, but trust me; we are more than just our ambition to do all the things, know all the things, etc. XD

  • @greenelephant...ofdoom5527

    Amortentia is "the most powerful love potion in existence." This suggests that there are weaker love potions out there, presumably easier to make as well. Amortentia was absurdly influential on Ron, so she probably could have made him "love" her enough with constant application of a relatively simple potion.
    Besides, potions really shouldn't be a hard subject at all. In terms of crafting a potion at least, it's practically the same as cooking except with weirder ingredients. It's literally just following instructions in a book. Rowling just tries (and fails) to make it sound like a difficult subject to give extra opportunity for conflict between Harry and Snape.

      Yes you are correct. They really should have published Snape's versions of the different potions. Even so, the normal directions can get you there. Again, it's artificial difficulty through making the subject itself flawed to make the students make mistakes.

      Literally everything except for making antidotes to mixed poisons is just following a recipe. I'm pretty sure all the tests are open book too, so it's not even as though they have to memorize the recipes.
      It's like having your test be to make spaghetti in marinara sauce. Sure there are a bunch of steps and a little prior knowledge may be necessary (or you could put notes in the margin), but overall it is just a matter of following directions properly.

      People with Harry's upbringing tend to become the monsters they were raised around. Look up studies of abusers, pedophiles, rapists, school shooters, etc. They feel the the urge to inflict the pain they experienced on others because they went through it. That's not always 100% the case but there's some sort of dysfunction in their life growing up. No one just ones day wakes up and becomes evil. There's more to it than people like to believe. JK Rowling said if Voldemort himself was actually raised like a normal child he could've turned out differently.

    It made me think that the potion may have darker side effects. That the children conceived while one of the parents are under the potions effects may be twisted by the magic. If Slughorn knew this, or later figured it out, that would mean that he understood that he inadvertently created Voldemort. But who would of known it would be used to conceive a child as most of the time one would think it would be just use to get another. And though those type of activities may follow the likelihood of a child can still be hit or miss. But for one to use it with intent to bare a child, I would image the magic would be twisted and would have side effects on the child as well since the intent of the magic involved it as well.
    One could image that since they don't always have to speak to cast spell, it is the intent that matters more than the words. The words are merely used to align the intent with the action. So should a magic normally used on only one be used with a second in mind, say a child, it would not be so far fetched to say that the spell would effect the second in some way. Now with someone who has such a dark intent, an intent that is heavily desired, as to steal a man for his child, I would image the effect would pass on to the child in some way. The negative energy creating a being or darkness unlike that which the world had seen before.
    But, hey, that's just a theory!
