Slughorn is a prime example of all the positive traits in Slytherin. His ambition while at the expense of others, was never malicious in nature, he was cunning and shrewd to see the potential in others regardless of blood purity.
Actually he used to think pure bloods were more talented than muggleborns( which is understandable, considering their unfair advantage of being born and raised in the wizarding world) until Harry’s mum shattered that perception
I feel so bad for him. He was used and was never appreciated by his loved ones in his life. He was self made and worked really hard.

Horace's redemption arc is one of the more interesting, never a bad guy but made some really big mistakes; did the right thing in Harry's last years at Hogwarts.

During said battle, he ended up fighting -Voldemort- He-WhO-mUsT-nOt-Be-NaMeD. He almost certainly had to overcome some serious-as-sh*t PTSD
Tom had already knew how to make Horcruxes before he even asked it to Slughorn. But rather, he was just confirming if he could do it up to seven times. It was never his fault to spill an information about how to create Horcruxes, but he was just feeling insecure to be the biggest contributor to the reign of the Dark Lord.
And was not prejudice to Muggle Borns like the Malfoys, Severous Snape, Delores Umbridge, and Voldemort and the death eaters.
He is still quite prejudiced, but he would readily accept and nurture talented muggle-born unlike most slytherins who are too vain about their superior bloodline.

It's important to remember Slughorn is from a pre-Voldemort Slytherin. He's an older model we don't see again until Leta Lestrange in the Fantastic Beasts series.
Leta is also from the older era, possibly Horace might have attended Hogwarts with Mewt and Leta

@@tater4442 Not really. You have to remember that wizardkind tend to live longer lives, i mean consider that Dumbledore was one of her teachers & by the time of the books he's about a century & a half... or much older. Cannon says she started teaching at Hogwarts around 1910.
@@harmanjotsingh4230 Slughorn's age is unknown he is younger than Dubmledore, so at the earliest he was born in 1882, and he started teaching in 1931, and he would have to have finished his 7 years at Hogwarts for that, so at the latest he was born in 1913. Leta was born in 1896/97 so there is a chance that they attended Hogwarts together, but it is unclear.
Voldemort still would have made Horcruxes even if Slughorn didn't tell him, especially since he already had a decent understanding of them. His goal was to beat death. He would go to great lengths to ensure his questions were answered.

@@MB-sj2yu Different opinions, you know. And he's a morally good and nice Slytherin character, had relations with students that disproved his prejudices and a lot more. He is also very likable in the movie, and actually one of the highlights there for me!

Hello, interestingly, Horace Slughorn psychological portrait matches the so-called "inverted narcissist" type (or "narcissist by proxy"). Those people tend to stay on the back line and avoid competition, but enjoy the company of people they deem important or powerful. Furthermore, they tend to actively seek close relationships with grandiose narcissists (Voldemort has obvious traits of narcissism, along with antisocial psychopathy).
The way I see it, it's kinda like someone who thinks little of themselves, doesn't think they can be as great as others, so tries to egg others on when they see potential. Tell me more about your conclusion.
It's because he uses them as a crutch. He is a professor and aligns himself with the students who do the best, and the students, wanting to get the best grades and recognition possible, are more than happy to oblige to joining his Club. Slughorn was a good man on the surface, but deep down, the man had his demons. Look at what it took to get the Tom Riddle memory out of him, even with everything that was going on around them at the time, when that really had nothing to do with his own more in-depth personal life, he just felt so ashamed of himself, possibly blaming himself for Voldemort even existing. The man is holding on to some really deep and dark pain.

I always loved Slughorn's character, he's a brilliant example of Slytherin's more positive traits ; Resourcefulness, cunning and opportunistic tendencies but not oriented towards evil-doing at all, just a great wizard overall :)
I love his character so much. I always imagine how it felt to see his favourite student as a monster, someone told me nothing causes more pain to a teacher than seeing his students fail.
An old adage; if the student never surpasses the teacher, then the teacher has failed.
I also think we should point out that even though Harry himself wasn't extraordinary at potions, the Potter family gained their massive wealth and reputation from brewing and even inventing potions, so anyone outside of his inner circle would probably say "Well of course he's amazing at potions. He's a Potter."

@@BlueAvocado3I agree, one of the reasons Harry was seemingly bad at potions was Snape constantly harassing him, likely leaving him unable to concentrate and making mistakes, plus Snapes teaching method appeared to be very poor indeed, in OOTP his "teaching" was summed up like so
1, tell them what potion they'll make today
2, put the recipe on the chalkboard
3, say the ingredients are in the store cupboard
4, do and say nothing until someone (Harry) makes an error
5, bring it to everyone's attention and do your best to humiliate them.
Snape appears to be a very good example of how someone who knows a subject well doesn't mean they would be a good choice to teach that subject.

I actually love Slughorn. As a Slytherin, I admire and relate to many of his flaws and I love how he is still a good person
I always loved Slughorn. Not only is he a fun character and fought Voldemort but he also proves that not all Slytherins are evil or biased. Being a Slytherin myself, he's a great character.

@@Mooglekingcatnick Malfoy was a product of his parents, and its very clear their effect on him drove him to the dark side. Only when he got so far in that his family was truly in danger did he really realize the errors of his ways.
Of course by then it was much too late. He and his mother did make up for it however by sparing Harry’s life at distinct moments

One of my favorite characters in the books. Like Snape after him, Slughorn helped to reshape my opinion of Slytherin house at a time when the established norm at Hogwarts threatened to burst at the seams at any moment. He also reminded me of a lot of male teachers I have had, faults and all, especially at the high school and university levels.
I know that some people don't like Slughorn so much, but he actually is my favorite character of the series! Also 16:20 is a perfect discription of Horace! He is the proof that Slytherin house is not just a bunch of a**holes! BTW have a nice day! 😃

We hear crouch Jr say what sounds like Moramorda at the World Cup so its easily probable that others have heard the incantation, seen the motion and this combined with the intent to cast it surely makes it possible to work it out. I bet its part of auror training for use when going undercover and fairly common practice for use in the way slughorn claims to make it appear death eaters have already been to divert them.

Colaman112 it really is. People keep telling me my facts are wrong basing the story on the movies and not the books. I was tired of it so that’s going to be in the beginning of every video now...sad it has to be that way
the movies are their own seperate continuity.
I’m of the belief that even though the books are objectively better the movies do a lot of stuff better than the books and I personally think that the true canon should be a mix of the best parts of both the books and the movies

There is a slight hint that Voldemort remembered Slughorn in a positive way. Slughorn was offered many times to allign himself with the Death Eaters in the first war and always seemed to slip from their grasp with avoidance or very polite excuses. Yet he was never seriously persued for his avoidance, which Dumbledore briefly mentioned in the books. After reading the books and watching the movie I really got the feeling that Slughorn actually truly liked and cared for Tom Riddle. He seemed deeply upset with what he did by telling Tom how to create Horcruxes and while he was clearly ashamed for his part in it the way he spoke to Harry let me believe that he felt actually sorrow for Tom and never forgave himself.

Slughorn is one of my favorite characters. It’s so relieving to see a Slytherin that isn’t evil. Yeah he did make some mistakes, but he did what he could to rectify it to the point of battling Voldemort.
He is a bit of an aristocrat, but he was a really good teacher, and placed no value on blood purity not hesitating to praise muggle borns who succeeded in their studies. He’s definitely pretty underrated
