It was never explicitly stated but you could interpret it as that. I always thought it was just luck
they didn't say they chose, they said "James and Sirius turned into such large animals, they could keep a werewolf in check" and "peter, the smallest, could slip between the womping willow's branches and touch the knot that froze it"

The book actually gave the impression that the marauders figured out a way to become animagi that was different from the typical way because they didn't have access to the actual process. So, they didn't necessarily go through these steps, sort of like Snape's notes in his potions book were much simpler and better than what the actual book said.
Either way, it will have been a similar process.

To help with the moth bit, in an entomology class, we had to raise tobacco hornworms and we passed if it made it to the final stage of metamorphosis and became a moth. These moths also bury underground to form their cocoons, BUT to imitate this, we had a small Tupperware that we kept them in and just fed them food. Once it came time for them to form the cocoon, we filled the Tupperware with shredded paper. They mistook the shredded paper for dirt, buried under it, formed the cocoon and then became moths. You could do this as well. The process ALSO takes about 1-2 months so you’ll have to do this while you also have the leaf in your mouth and are doing all the other stuff lol

The Marauders were dedicated for this just to hang around Lupin when he was a werewolf. It’s actually really sweet.
This never made sense to me as surely a werewolf would want to eat a stag or dog.

@@jackgibson16 No the werewolf’s only attack humans, like the dementors it doesn’t see animals as a threat. Also lupin stated that when he transformed with his friends, he would sometimes have control over what he was doing and the memories he has of roaming the grounds with his friends were some of the happiest memories of his life.

i remember taking the patronus test one time just for the heck of it, and it was a sparrowhawk. iirc, your patronus would be the animal you would turn into? i'm not sure on this. but i thought of this while watching the video. it would be lovely to be a bird~

Just rewatched this and realized... The Moon took Remus’ innocence away, but technically it also gave him friends during his transformations.. the moon is so heavily involved in the animagus process that I feel that it was the author’s way of being kinder to Remus after inflicting the curse on him.
The fact that I am actively listening to J while Fishben is jumping in the background and distracting me, me smiling even though trying not to is simply hilarious to me.
I think the reason for Wormtail's wand looking like a snake is because it's the wand that Voldemort had made for Pettigrew by the enslaved Ollivander.
But that means that would be his wand throughout his whole school life.

I think that people get registered by an Animagus at the Ministry because the Ministry help them along with the process (providing the leaf, cocoon, dew, etc.) making it a lot easier.
So unregistered ones have a lot harder of a process to go through.

@@generalleboeuf288 I don't think there was much thought in the idea of registering to apparate past it being a parallel to learning to drive - they can only get their licence at the same age as you can get your driving licence, for example.

If dragon is an option, I would definitely hope I'd become a dragon Animagus. The power to do so much, be intimidating, and be able to just fly wherever I want (for the most part) makes dragons one of the best options, if it's possible.

I love the sound Trout Ben makes when he's flopping around, even though it's meant to sound like he's jumping out of water, the sound can't help but make me feel like he's being launched off of like one of those suction cup spring toys. XD

With him mentioning turning into a fish as an animagus, that made me think back to a Pottermore article I read saying your patronus is likely to be your animagus form. My patronus is a salmon.

The way that Remus described the process in the Prisoner of Azkaban, I thought you could choose your animal form. he said that James and Sirius became big animals to keep him under control and Peter became a small one to get to the Whomping Willow without injury.
So when Rowling decided to go with the "you can't choose you animagus form" rule, I was actually really surprised. Mostly because of the way she wrote the conversation, and how coincidental it was that their forms were perfect for helping Remus.
Almost like it's a retcon and she never really thought of the process until she decided to write it down huh?
I think Lupin just meant it was a coincidence that they turned into animals that were useful to his situation. I remember it being said before the series ended that Animagi can't choose what they turn into, so it's not just a retcon

Snape is described as bat-like so what if he is actually an animagus? We never see him transform but he can fly unaided and by extension is a master of brewing potions, a requirement to becoming an animagus.

The most impressive part of “absurd magic”, such as that in Harry Potter, is that some incredible genius figured out how to do all this.
Somebody tried eating a tree, and now we have cinnamon. Dedicated wizards probably experimented on many hopefully willing subjects, and eventually pieces of the solution started to show promise. The actual process is likely overkill on many steps, but it's a sure method, which makes it safer than improvising or substituting. Since the power of ingredients mainly comes from what they represent, the Marauders could've found some alternatives of equal or greater value.
It reminds me of glitches in different games or absurdly complicated ways to unlock things, and the fact that somebody did it without a guide or anything

@@Mr12Relic That's nothing to the madness of speed running communities for video games. There is some absurd glitch/exploit skip in San Andres that requires such certain steps and timing, that makes the steps to becoming an Animagus seem like reciting the ABC's in comparison.

I got the herbs and fungi book and did you guys know that there’s a plant named moondew? which awakens, revival and restores and it also causes the potion to become liquid form that would turn the other ingredients to liquid. Also morning dew from the moon dew gives us twilight, so that means you just have to collect the dew that hasn’t been touched in seven days by human feet.

Anyone heard of "Bisclavret" and "Melion"? They're stories about a nobleman who can turn into a wolf, but can only turn back into a human when he has his clothes or a magical artifact. I have a feeling in Harry Potter these stories are based on the tale of some wizard who's turning into an animagi went wrong.

McGonagall definitely knew probably helped them discreetly aquire the potion ingredients and let them go out during the electrical storm without punishment

So let's appreciate that it wasn't just the marauders who have done this. Imagine McGonagall or Rita Skeeter doing the mandrake leaf step for becoming animagi.
For the moonlight to finish the potion, you could just fly up and have some personal mixture device or spell to negate or ease the effects of winds or possible turbulence. Or just build a device that flies up and does the mixture up in the clouds and flies back.
I would want to be either a tiger, unicorn, raven, crow, eagle, black bear, fox, seal, sealion, otter, duck, goose, swan, or polar grizzly. If humaniod creatures are possible, I'd like to extend that to mermaids, centaurs and fairies.

@@Jthomas-gg9pi plus, as they point out, all the ingredients and rituals necessary have an inherent connection to shapeshifting/death/soul themselves. So people just experimented with those things until someone succeeded in turning into an animal. 😊

Actually, this was something that bugged me for the longest time. "Your animagus form is the same as your Patronus?". It would make sense, considering that your animagus is like part of your soul and your Patronus is the animal that is you the most? I read the entire series looking for some proof about it (and it was hard man, because everyone that is an animagus never uses a patronus, and people that use the spell are not animagus. Even James, that you could think fits into the requirements of being an animagus AND showing his patronus is actually not, because, even though his animagus form is a stag, we never actually see his patronus, we see HARRY's patronus and he SAYS that is his dad). I read all of the books and was starting to loose hope. But then. The answear came in the second part of the last book! Through Minerva, of all people! We all know that her animagus form is a cat, but in the middle of The Battle of Hogwarts she also uses her patronus, AND IT IS A CAT. I was so relieved. From then on I just assumed your Patronus and animagus forms would just be the same. After this video, I don't know. I think I'll continue to believe it though.
Snapes Patronus was a doe symbolizing his love for Lily yet I seriously doubt his animagus would of been a doe as well and Nymphadora Tonks changed her Patronus to a wolf when she fell in love with Remus so your patronus can obviosly change and most likely not one in the same with your Animagus.

@Jillaena Weesies I'm assuming the latter. I think that your patronus can change depending on your new experiences etc, but your animagus will remain the same based on who you were (inc your experiences etc) when you performed the ritual. So they might end up being different.
The real question is; Can you cast a patronus while being in your animal form? Like what if your animagus form was that of an elf?
Reading some things on Pottermore (Wizarding world) I came upon this: "Your Animagus and Patronus animal can be the same
If a wizard never masters Animagus magic, it doesn’t necessarily mean they’ll never find out the animal they could’ve been. Another pretty complex form of magic, the Patronus Charm, has been known to mirror it, meaning the animal you cast to attack Dementors could well be your inner animal too. Minerva McGonagall’s Animagus form, for example, is famously a cat, and so is her Patronus."

So the Patronus isn't actually a representation of your soul at all! It is basically a representation of protection and the will to live, so it naturally takes the form of the wizard's soul (it's animal form, anyway) to probably represent the inner animalistic i-am-going-to-do-anything-to-survive kind of mentality, and If something or someone else starts to represent that will to live (as it happened to Severus and Tonks), then it morphs into somehting else. It will just take the form of what makes you happy and makes you want to move foward (it is kind of sad to think that 'yourself' is not a good enough reason to those two characters, If you look at it through this lense). It takes the form of your animal soul because, in the beguining, you just want to survive and save yourself and this is enough, and then life gets more complicated and it may come a point where there are people you want to save more than yourself.

I was always under the impression that becoming an Animagus was just really really advanced Transfiguration. Interesting to see it's actually a blend of several different Magical Disciplines.

Yeah, I'm about 90% sure that she's either Filch's wife or his daughter (If she was the daughter it would make sense why he's a stickler for rules. His own daughter would have suffered by breaking the rules and botching a secret animagus transformation. That's bound to leave a mark on the poor guy).
