3D Games That Returned to Their 2D Roots

  • Video gaming in the 80s was limited to the 2D plane. Though games like Star Fox on SNES would give us a glimpse of what's to come. One generation later, 3D gaming exploded onto the scene. Super Mario 64 was a pioneer for the then future of gaming. It wouldn't take Sony long to catch up releasing games like Crash Bandicoot and Spyro the Dragon. However, time is a circle. As gaming marched on and innovation continued, some franchises felt the urge to return back to their 3D roots.
Perhaps no character embodies this more than Mario. Mario owned the 2D space and, by association, owned the gaming world. And when games tackled the next frontier, Mario 64 was there to be cutting-edge technology. However, he was also one the first to return to their 2D roots. When the Wii rolled out, Mario would headline a 2D and 3D adventure. Mario Galaxy was a masterpiece. But it wasn't his only outing that generation. Mario would star in New Super Mario Bros Wii. This was a return to form for many 80s and 90s kids. It spawned many sequels on both handheld and console. Mario displayed that he could transition between 2D and 3D games without a problem. Every console and handheld since then has featured a 2D and 3D game. The Switch wasn't even an exception. He has Super Mario Odyssey and Suped Mario Bros Wonder, thus showcasing Mario still has it.
But Mario is just one of many characters to have this ability. Kirby, Megaman and Prince of Persia are all franchises that have done similar things with their gaming catalog. and I'm sure you can think of more, like Metroid. So who do you want to be on part 2? Let me know in the comments below!

I'm surprised you went the whole video WITHOUT bringing up Sonic's transition from 2D to 3D back to 2D. That's impressive.

    A very good video.
If i have any notes, is to maybe add more energy..? Not to say that you dont have an energy, a good one at that, but there are a lot of moments that probably should have had empty space cut regarding audio, just silent or awkward kinda vibe. Theres some serious potential here, keep it up! But try cutting down some of those silences.
    Love the videos!

Thank you for the input. I need a new editing software. Song Vegas is doing this weird thing where if I cut my audio at all (for dead air or anything like that) it just straight up mutes my audio. Very weird and frustrating.
      But thanks for watching!

You have the New Super Mario Bros. franchise slightly backward. New Super Mario Bros. on DS was the first one. The Wii version is a spinoff of the DS game, not the other way around.
