Phil Collins was the drummer for Genesis with Peter Gabriel as lead singer. When Peter quit the band, Phil took over lead vocals "Until they find a replacement". Every time someone came in to audition, the band would say they wanted someone that sounded like Phil. The person auditioning would say "Why doesn't Phil just sing?". Phil would say "I'm a drummer, not a singer." Pretty ironic that he's known as a singer now, he's a really fantastic drummer.
Not exactly how it happened. The auditions were down to 2 or 3 guys. I believe Nick Lowe turned it down, and Mick Strickland sang one of the songs, but was way out of key. Phil actually stated at that point, he would just sing. The direction switched and they looked for a drummer. Bill Bruford heard about all of it and offered his services until a full time replacement could be found. It was overheard by some that some executives said 'it would never work, Phil doesn't have the face to be a lead singer. After signing elsewhere and Genesis on a break Phil recorded his first solo album. It was called 'Face Value' and the cover was a close up of his face. This is the first track off that album. Edit: I should have added that it was Chester Thompson who became their long term solution with Genesis and handle the majority of the drums while they were on tour. You see him in this video, play percussion as he walks the stage singing. Also underneath the Drums that rise up that Phil plays. He's playing off of Phil during that part. Phil's actual drumkit is always to Chester's left. Phil is left handed and Chester being right adds an amazing spectacle when they are drumming together. Their solo's are some of the best, and very entertaining to watch. But, Phil made the decision to step out front, it was easier for them to bring in a drummer.
Also check out what he did for the Tarzan movie, dude didn't have to go as hard as he did, but he even sang language he didn't speak for it. Insane guy
For someone born in 63 and grown up with music as a very important input it is strange to know that there are people who don't know THIS song! It must be a sign of me getting old ;-)
It is not the drum machine, it is how an artist uses it! Phil Collins is a master at using the tools at his disposal. The lighting, the engineering, the drum machine, the vocoder, the guitar, his voice, and then THE DRUMS all work together. His percussive use of consonants and syncopation is spell-binding. The whole performance creates a drama that builds until the end and then he...... releases us to breathe again!
Phil Collins is an icon, and this is an iconic song. Singing and playing drums at the same time is difficult at best and he does it with ease! Love your reaction!
I saw Phil Collins in concert when he played drums for : Eric Clapton - Phil Collins as a solo artist - Phil Collins when he was in GENESIS. With & without Peter Gabriel.
20 year old live performance of a 43 year old song that - to this day - is still a drive time banger. My steering wheel has been air drummed to death at 140 decibels thousands of times just because of this song!
A completely different song by Phil Collins that's well worth a listen is "Another day in paradise". If you watch the official video the message is deeper.
Every time I watch this video I am moved. The great Phil's synchronization is incredibly perfect. I'm very sorry that, due to health problems, he can no longer play. I'm a metal drummer. Grazie mille gorgeous Emma 🌹
Very nice reaction. An interesting tidbit, in the early eighties I worked about a dozen shows in security for Genesis. Phil Collins traveled with a ping pong table and every night before the show they play ping pong. Because I was working I never got to play with him but there was always lots of people backstage. Really nice guy though
It's a song that you give some patience to but delivers one of the most powerful endings to an important song for Phil, as well for many of us. It has connection, that goes deep for many.
Probably one of the best and most iconic beat drops in rock history. He and Don Henley (Eagles) were masters of singing while driving a drum set. Always a thrill to see someone experience this for the first time. 🥰
Phil Collins is a LEGEND ! In the Air tonight is my favorite Song from him. On second Place is I wish it would Rain down. Eric Clapton plays the Guitar. Emma, the best Song were written in the 80s. (my Opinion) Please look out for more Music of this Decade. Thank you, stay safe and healthy and have a nice Week. 😊😊😊
This song is about the feeling Phil Collins wwas feeling after coming home tour & catching this wife at the time has a a fair and what his emotions were at that time . If you want to hear a great cover of this song check out In This Moment cover of it.
My favorite all time song. I’ve watched over a dozen reaction videos but none of them reacted to all the sections of the video that moved me. You did. Thx 👍😎🥰
Damn right. I remember watching that first episode in 1984, and this song made that scene just absolutely electric. It's forever fused in my brain, even more than the song's earlier appearance in Risky Business, at the beginning of the train scene.
Emma, please take a look at the Elvis Presley ‘68 Comeback Special … or his live performance of American Trilogy. And you have fragrance model good looks!
Great reaction! Look for Genesis Mama for another Phil rock classic. Phil Collins had a solo career at the same time as he was in Genesis. I Don't Care Anymore, Against All Odds, Take Me Home, The Roof is Leaking and Through These Walls (NSFW) are a few compelling Phil Collins performances. Home by the Sea is a good Genesis performance, along with Mama. ALWAYS watch live. He was a flawless performer on stage.
Miami Vice Season 1 Episode 1 (near the end of the episode) (setting - late at night) IN THE AIR TONIGHT begins to play in the background as Crockett and Tubbs r potentially traveling to a gun fight, in Sonny Crocketts’ Ferrari Daytona Spyder 365 GTS. Tubbs is checking/loading his double barreled shotgun. Crockett asks Tubbs, “how much time we got?” Tubbs: “25 minutes.“ Sonny pulls off the side of the road to use a pay phone. He calls his wife - whom he’s been having marital difficulties with - and asks: “I need to know something Caroline. The way we used to be together, I don’t mean lately but before, it was real wasn’t it?“ Caroline responds, “yeah, it was ….. u bet it was. Sonny, what’s wrong?” Sonny replies, “nothing Caroline.” He hangs up, returns to the car and as they drive off, is when you hear Phil Collins’ drum crescendo.
He was introduced by a BBC radio DJ ( the late Steve Wright ) as a Singer , Song Writer , Musician , Actor and most of all a Gentleman . That sums Phil up .
Phil Collins no solo es un gran compositor, es un extraordinario cantante muy afinado- se nota hasta tocando la batería- sino también es uno de los mejores bateristas. Bonita reacción y estas muy hermosa en esta video.
The beginning shows how stressed we are, wanting all - now!! Or at least are used to that now, as a song today contains of a chorus and a verse at best... This is a well written song, totally awesome! Thanks Emma! 😍
This is an epic performance and I've been a fan of his since his Genesis days. He's not only a talented song writer, but there are only a handful of drummers who can sing well while drumming. Don Henley and Roger Taylor are a couple of others, who come to mind. There's also an up and coming rock trio of sisters from Mexico called The Warning and Paulina the drummer is another. I highly recommend that you check out their performance of Dust to Dust/Dull Knives (2 songs performed back to back) from their Pepsi Center concert in Mexico City, last October. Keep the reactions coming!
Funny how non of these reaction videos bar one, have ever mentioned how difficult and impressive it is to play drums with such vigour and still control his diaphragm and stay pitch perfect. Never been a fan of his but that's amazing.
Although he doesn't sing much in it (Rat Race), Phil Collins stars in one Miami Vice episode (Season 2, Episode 12 - 1985) called 'Phil the Shill'. He is great as a conman who gets the girl. Funny, dramatic, and totally entertaining.
To me, this song does a great job of matching the lyrics with the feelings created by the sound. Particularly the way it builds. I also wonder if there is not another meaning at the end of the song. "I can feel it coming" and then some noises.
Phil Collins famously said in an interview he wasn't a singer who could drum a little bit. He was a drummer who could sing a little bit. This song was his first major hit after he left Genesis. You should react to his other hits one night in Paradise and Something happened on the way to heaven
when you consider the song was written after a breakup... you can imagine the thoughts going through his mind... so... the song is incredible for catching his state. also consider that when he did the demo... he did it all.including mixing and the like. fairly handy for a guy who just wanted to be a drummer doing backup vocals
This Phil Collins live performance was during his farewell tour, and even though it was performed over 20 years ago, it still sounds amazing today than when he performed it live back then.
I enjoyed your reaction, Phil Collins is a legend, one of the best singing drummers ever, in the last year I've been following an excelent up-and-coming band called The Warning, the drummer Paulina can also lead sing while playing, she is not the main singer though, the main singer and guitarist is Daniela, both of them are really great, TW is a band totally worth checking out. TW's live performance videos I recommend you: - Dust to Dust / Dull Knives (2 songs in the same video joined with a very nice transition) from Pepsi Center (Paulina is the lead singer on Dust to Dust) - Hell You Call A Dream from Pepsi Center (Daniela is the lead singer on this one) - Disciple from Pepsi Center (Daniela and Paulina duo) - Evolve live at 2023 VMAs (Daniela lead sings on this one) I just discovered your channel and realized you lost your other channels (sorry your previous work is lost), so I don't know if you know the band already, either way would be very cool to watch you reacting to them. Thanks for your time, have a nice day.
He is an EXCEPTIONAL drummer, and was all there for the Gabriel-era Genesis. A must listen path for any music reactor. The first two post-Gabriel Genesis releases are also masterpieces.
I'm surprised that you didn't comment on the difficulty of someone singing while playing the drums! Holding a note, while having the impact from striking the drums go through your body requires incredible talent.
Hey Emma, nice reaction. 👌🏼 Great song and good introduction for people, who don't know, who Phil Collins is and what he's famous for. For me, his best time was in the 80s. Especially his Berlin concert of his Seriously tour 1990) was incredible. There were a lot of songs which were performed in its best way: - Against all odds (I know, you have already seen the Live Aid Version of this, but this is much better -> without piano failures... 😉 - A groovy kind of love - Separate lives - Do you remember - Inside Out - Take me home - One more night - Easy lover - Always... And you'll see, the crowd loved him so much. Unfortunately, I was too young at that time, to visit this concert. But I saw him later several times. It was always a great experience. And on top I had the chance to see him twice with Genesis, but this is another wonderful chapter... Thanks for this one. By the way, you look gorgeous! 😊 Greetings from Germany ✌🏼 🇩🇪
Like everyone, this is one of my favourite performances of all time. I love how the audience reacts the moment that drum machine starts, they know which song is coming! The way he saunters around the stage, and that drum kit rising from beneath the platform. It’s just brilliant showmanship! Also, you really need to hear Australia’s favourite son, John Farnham, a.k.a. “The Voice”. I recommend starting with ”You’re The Voice”, Australia’s unofficial pub anthem, the song that should lead any motivational playlist. The best version is Live with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, just be sure to keep an eye on that mic stand!😊
Phil is a 'Prog Rock' God having played with Genesis from the early 70s. You gotta check out his live Genesis dual drumming with Chester Thompson. Checkout the live Rome open air gig in 2007 in front of half a million people it is insane. It is amazing how many have never heard of Phil before along with Genesis he has sold over 300 million albums! yes 300 million! He took over from another legend Peter Gabriel as lead singer in 1975. Again checkout the live old Genesis medley of In The Cage/Cinema Show/ Dukes Travels/Afterglow it is off the charts!
A great song and another nice reaction by you. I saw Phil Collins around 1986 at Irvine Meadows, what a great show. When this song was played the crowd Went crazy.
Just wow, it was great to listen too this great Song by Phil Collins, a musical giant and such a fabulous, warm/ sincere and passionate reaction by Emma, sheer bliss; And mixing in some technical points as well; Plus Emma's delightful response when the Drum's started, simply magical; Also it was simply heartwarming/joyous and terrific too see Emma rocking out/ relaxed/ playful and happy, playing an air guitar; It turned a good day into an even better day, thanks you beautiful Lady; Reading the comments allied too what I already new, it is really sad that Phil Collins is suffering from poor health; Going full circle back to the start of the Video Emma mentioned that she can't whistle, well that makes 2 of us a neither can I, ah well Emma has many, many other strings to her bow. 🦅🦅🥰😍🥰💖🤟👏👍🎶🎵🎶🎧🎙🍁🍁💐🦅.
What’s happened to Phil?!? I didn’t realize he was sick? (I saw a picture of him that looked unwell, but I never “trust” those because so many are faked.)
emma, i know you recently watched the Live Aid, with queen, phil played this song at live aid also, , but what alot of people dont know, is that he played at wembley england live aid, jumped on concord, flew against the time zones landed in america, and played at philly in the US part of the live aid concert,
I remember! He was the only one to do both the Live Aid concerts. What a day! Everyone I know was gathered somewhere to watch Live Aid. I remember them announcing he was on his way. He was a little late and Paul Young got stuck singing Everytime You Go Away over and over😂 waiting for Collins to get on stage.
Wow, you just opened the floodgates! Great Phil Collins songs. "Another Day in Paradise" "True Colors" "Easy Lover" "You Can't Hurry Love" "Two Hearts" "I Wish It Would Rain Down" "Against All Odds "Something Happened on the Way to Heaven" "One More Night" "Sussudio" "Dance into the Light" "A Groovy Kind of Love" "Take Me Home"
Such a great performance of a great song, and from this concert, the percussion trio that leads into "Take Me Home" is also worth checking out! From Phil Collins with Genesis, "Mama" is a usual choice, though from the album Duke, either "Turn It On Again" or "Duchess" would be worthwhile too!
A great reaction to this great song, Emma. I'm really glad that you enjoyed this, three other of his songs which I recommend are: "Against All Odd (Take a Look at Me Now)", "Another Day in Paradise", "One More Night". There are many more songs by him but these are good ones to continue with.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ I can feel it coming in the air tonight, oh Lord And I've been waiting for this moment for all my life, oh Lord Can you feel it coming in the air tonight? Oh Lord, oh Lord ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
The now famous drum break was one of 3 he worked on for that break. He played 3 styles and eventually chose the middle one which is the one you hear now.
The bass player for Phil is known as white lightning to people inside the music industry. I first heard this song on an episode of Miami Vice tv show back in the 1980s.
With such a large catalogue, it's a tough choice. At the moment, I'm going to say that my current favourite Phil Collins solo song is "Colours" from ...But Seriously.
I'm 80 next month and thank you for this music. Have to cruise TH-cam to find the good stuff.
One of the greatest, if not the greatest drum breaks ever.
You can summon an entire generation with it :)
Amen break... nothing will top that

Yeah we know.
you forgot about Mike Rutherford(mike and the mechanics), genesis had lots of talent in it.
Love your posts

Oh yeah)))👍
For someone born in 63 and grown up with music as a very important input it is strange to know that there are people who don't know THIS song! It must be a sign of me getting old ;-)
Big 80s fan here. This song is timeless and one could argue its one of the best songs of the 80s.
ever, not just the 80's.
Remember when the first episode of Miami Vice aired and this song played while they were driving in the Ferrari? Peak 80’s right there.
@@matthewgunther782 Mine is of Genesis singing Mama in the Magnum P.I. episode called Death and Taxes.
Drumming and singing at the same time is amazing.

Phil Collins is an icon, and this is an iconic song. Singing and playing drums at the same time is difficult at best and he does it with ease! Love your reaction!
The sound engineer must be great. They have to set it up so it sounds great both before and during him playing the drums.
The buildup on this song is SO epic, and the breakdown when Phil sits at the drum kit is *chefs kiss* perfefct!!
One of the great liver performances of our time.
I saw Phil Collins in concert when he played drums for : Eric Clapton - Phil Collins as a solo artist - Phil Collins when he was in GENESIS. With & without Peter Gabriel.

Every time I watch this video I am moved. The great Phil's synchronization is incredibly perfect. I'm very sorry that, due to health problems, he can no longer play. I'm a metal drummer. Grazie mille gorgeous Emma 🌹
Thanks mate!
Always love your reactions❤ when more Epica, Sabaton, Nightwish or Powerwolf?
Very nice reaction. An interesting tidbit, in the early eighties I worked about a dozen shows in security for Genesis. Phil Collins traveled with a ping pong table and every night before the show they play ping pong. Because I was working I never got to play with him but there was always lots of people backstage. Also Leland Sklar on Bass, another extraordinary musician!
He is a great bassist, and a cool, down home type dude!
Cool dude❤!! Played for numerous artists, bands: Toto, Darryl Hall & John Oates, Bee Gees, The Doors, etc.
I noticed that as well! Is there anyone that dude does not play with?
Yes, and he plays piano too.
Epic performance of a classic by a living Legend! Heart breaking to see his physical decline.
I know the song. Never seen or heard it live. Thank you.
Absolutely incredible performance
My most played artist from 80s music. He's on another level entirely.
He is one of the few drummers I know who can sing while playing drums
Paulina Villarreal Velez from the Warning is also a drummer that sings
Great reaction!! Try Shania Twain any man of mine it’s country but it fits you good job!!!👍
It's a song that you give some patience to but delivers one of the most powerful endings to an important song for Phil, as well for many of us. It has connection, that goes deep for many.

"Don't Care Anymore" Live at Perkins Palace is a must.
This song was used in the pilot episode of "Miami Vice".
I loved how they filmed that episode! They took time to develop atmosphere. Just two guys sitting in a Vet heading into danger.
Another day in paradise is my favourite Phil Collins track, I'd love to see you react to it 🫶

Just wow, it was great to listen too this great Song by Phil Collins, a musical giant and such a fabulous, warm/ sincere and
passionate reaction by Emma, sheer bliss; And mixing in some technical points as well; Plus Emma's delightful response when the
Drum's started, simply magical; Also it was simply heartwarming/joyous and terrific too see Emma rocking out/ relaxed/ playful
and happy, playing an air guitar; It turned a good day into an even better day, thanks you beautiful Lady;
Reading the comments allied too what I already new, it is really sad that Phil Collins is suffering from poor health; Going full
circle back to the start of the Video Emma mentioned that she can't whistle, well that makes 2 of us a neither can I, ah well
Emma has many, many other strings to her bow.
🦅🦅🥰😍🥰💖🤟👏👍🎶🎵🎶🎧🎙🍁🍁💐🦅.
Im glad someone mentioned it but shout out to our boy phil, the drummer who sings, but can now only sing from a wheelchair.
What’s happened to Phil?!? I didn’t realize he was sick? (I saw a picture of him that looked unwell, but I never “trust” those because so many are faked.)
@@marciebulsaraorcutt lifetime of concerts and drumming have given him permanent back nerve damage.
@@evanirvana500 😳🥺That’s too bad!🙏
emma, i know you recently watched the Live Aid, with queen, phil played this song at live aid also, , but what alot of people dont know, is that he played at wembley england live aid, jumped on concord, flew against the time zones landed in america, and played at philly in the US part of the live aid concert,
"Another Day in Paradise"
"True Colors"
"Easy Lover"
"You Can't Hurry Love"
"Two Hearts"
"I Wish It Would Rain Down"
"Against All Odds
"Something Happened on the Way to Heaven"
"One More Night"
"Sussudio"
"Dance into the Light"
"A Groovy Kind of Love"
"Take Me Home"
Thanks for the video. "Do You Remember" live is good too.
I can recognise Phil Collins by his drumming style always. He is the only one that has "that" rythm.
His rhythm is incredible.
Simplemente un genio de la música
The daughtry cover of this song is insane
Absolutely love your reaction!
Glad you enjoyed 🤩🤩🤩🥰🥰🤗👋✨
ביצוע מדהים...מהמם❤❤❤אהבתי את התגובה שלך🤘🤘🤘🫶🫶
Interesting reaction, charming personality, beautiful woman
Wow, thank you
A great reaction to this great song, Emma. I'm really glad that you enjoyed this, three other of his songs which I recommend are:
"Against All Odd (Take a Look at Me Now)",
"Another Day in Paradise",
"One More Night".
There are many more songs by him but these are good ones to continue with.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
I can feel it coming in the air tonight, oh Lord
And I've been waiting for this moment for all my life, oh Lord
Can you feel it coming in the air tonight? Oh Lord, oh Lord
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Wonderful🤪😂🥰😍
I enjoyed your reaction! (you’re stunning byw❤)
❤ Miss him
The now famous drum break was one of 3 he worked on for that break.
Phil also is a history buff - he owns the largest private collection of the Alamo artifacts.
i believe he donated them all to the Alamo Museum some time ago
@@philroach9402 - I knew he had donated some but wasn’t sure if it was all. I think they have a special exhibition there that’s all from him.
@@doplinger1 that's my understanding
Brilliant song and loved your reaction and engagement with the song!

Big Wow! Better live.😊
I love this song😊
