i remember hearing a story that some of the other bands and singers, that were on after, were slightly peeved by Queen, as they were going to phone in their performance.
However now they had to try to at least match Queen.
How much of this was ribbing, or if it was true at all I have no idea.

He was sick alright. He was HIV positive...But he just wasn't sure yet.He suspected...And that's why he's wearing that bracelet thing around his bicep to hide a sarcoma marking on his body.Makes his and the Bands performance even more phenomenal. The best of all time no doubt 😊

Considered to be one of the best,if not the best, live performances in rock history. Freddie was having throat problems that day and was advised by his doctor not to sing. "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" was a tribute to Elvis.

  • @sherryheim5504

Freddie had a serious throat infection and was told by his doctor not to perform on this day but I don't think Freddie could pass up having the whole world as his audience. After the performance someone asked him how he felt while singing and he said it was like gargling with thick shards of glass. Brian has said that they could not hear each other on stage and there was no sound check, so the fact that they were able to keep it together is amazing and perhaps a testament to them often performing in these types of large arenas. Also according to Brian they had a very exacting way of communicating on stage when they were unable to hear. Normally if Freddie has something going on and can't manage the highest notes, Roger fills them in. Unfortunately, as I said they couldn't hear each other on the stage. Thank you for reacting to this outstanding set at this concert.

Interesting what you say about them having a system. Because I do think they used it here. Freddie hit some good high B-flats in their opener, Bohemian Rhapsody (sorry - I'm a musician/music nerd) but in their last song, We Are The Champions, it seems that they wisely had planned on him maybe not being able to get that high. So in "no time for losers," Roger sings the original melody and Freddie harmonizes underneath. Then right after, much more subtly, "'cause we are the champions...." The words "cause" and "the" are both those high B-flats. Roger sings them. Freddie mimes them. It's actually a pretty brilliant sleight-of-hand. Freddie sings "no time for losers.... we are... champions." And no-one was the wiser, including me until years later.

    • @sagnyc
      @sagnyc 20 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา +2

I will concede that Freddie hit a nice high C (!) in the first chorus. ("We'll keep on FIGHT-ing to the end"), but I stand by my original point. And he ducked out of the high C in the 2nd chorus, entirely understandably as he wasn't feeling at his best.

Another reactor's comments reminded me that Phil Collins played at both venues that day. He performed in London, flew to Philly, and performed again. The whole thing was good example of positive human collaboration and effort for the benefit of the world at large.

Freddie didn’t just sing songs on stage …he performed them as only Freddie could. I would love for you to react to more live performances….. please try Somebody to Love live in Montreal 1981 …or live in Milton Keynes 1982, both are fabulous. You must, must react to Who Wants To Live Forever live in Budapest. And did you know that Freddie also perform opera with Montserrat Caballe’ in Barcelona, Spain. Those songs are another must too. It is very natural for a top high Eb tone singer to not reach higher notes of studio songs in a show. it is not normal what opera singers do, and they also have an element of voice coversion. they put all the weight of the voice on the belly, lungs and opera screem. Freddie sings from his natural throat voice and what he does on stage, no one else can do. the voice tambur, the dinamics with the mic, the emotions he provoces, the commending of the audiance and the visual experience of his unstopable carisma were second to non. He was the greatest showman and was dancing on stage years before micheal jackson did.
H finishes a show with a clean Bb, I want to see how many rock singers can do that after having a whole show in avarage of between g to a. no one can sing like that. there are few, and perhaps in his prime klouse from Scorpions could have. Not like this, but in the tone hight. Robert plant was crazy on stage but in 6 years he ruined his voice. Anyway freddie is and will always be the best.

Thank you so much for reacting to this. I was in college here in North Carolina when this concert happened in 1985. I remember it well. My friends and I loved attending concerts. It was one of the things we loved doing together. My wife did the same thing during that time period as well. There were a huge number of wonderful groups at the time and concerts were not very expensive to attend. Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Boston, Journey, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Triumph, 38 Special, Foreigner, and many others. I cannot describe to you what a wonderful time it was to be young then compared to today. We were happier, relationships were closer, life was more carefree, and the music was spectacular. Our 4 adult children (28-33) love 70’s/80’s music just as we do. My heart just aches that young people will not get to experience life as we did as teenagers in the 70’s/80’s. Again, thank you so much for posting this video. It was a wonderful treat.

I know he has AIDS (VIV now but becomes AIDS soon) and at this point in his life, he didn't know. I also know that he will suffer unbelievable pain, unbelievable devastation, and lose most of his foot. He didn't know that either.

Great reaction! It’s a joy to see a huge fan of music having a wonderful time. I was a preteen when Live Aid was simulcast globally. I remember the biggest acts in music performing and they’d switch from the UK (London) and then to the USA (Philadelphia) and back again. By far Queen’s performance has got to be the top live concert performance in Rock & Roll history. The amazing energy, atmosphere, and connection Freddie and the audience shared was incredible and unmatched. Even watching on TH-cam all these years later still brings chills and excitement. Freddie Mercury was the ultimate performer.

IIn 1985, I was a producer for the US broadcast of the concert that alternated between London and Philadelphia. Queen performed around 2 pm, and the reaction from the large screens and crowd in Philadelphia was just as enthusiastic as those in London. We were broadcasting the MTV feed in the US, where at that time, less than half the country had cable to watch the performance. However, MTV replayed the performance constantly the following week. Interestingly, Phil Collins played first in London, then flew to Philadelphia in time to perform again before the concert concluded.

Unquestionably THE greatest live performance of all-time, IMHO. I watched both concerts live (I'm 66) - the one everyone justifiably raves about at Wembley, and the sister concert in Philadelphia - because a lot of my favourite musical acts were performing on both sides of "the pond". There was a 5 hr. time differential, so the London show was well along before Philly started. But fans in Philadelphia were treated to giant screen viewings of the performers across the Atlantic. I watched on tv as the crowd sang along to every Queen tune and went bananas when they were done. Incredible to watch!
The 22+ min. of the Queen garnered so much attention to the famine relief effort, especially in Europe,. Organizers estimate when the band had finished their set, the amount of money donated had gone up eight to tenfold! Between both shows more than $300M US was raised.
Yes, there were 100,000+ at Wembley; as the London Police described the crowd in a "Times of London" article: We estimate at least 75,000 paid attendance. Plus, there seems to have been another 25,000 more who "lost their ticket stubs". LOL!!!
BTW, Bob Geldof was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II for his work towards the famine relief effort, as well as being the spearhead behind Band Aid's (again, the Brits) "Do They Know It's Christmas?". Co-written by Geldof and Midge Ure.

I remember watching these enormous live shows from my Grandma's house ... on her enourmous console TV that weighed about half a ton.
The next year, 1986, Queen returned to Wembley on the Magic tour, and played two sold-out nights. The opening act ... the OPENING act ... was INXS. From these monster shows came the double album, "Queen: Live at Wembley '86" (truth in titling!), which I had on cassette in my little music collection. Queen could sell out massive old Wembley any time.

this 22 minutes of music is widely accepted as the best 22 minutes of music ever....even though this was not a "queen" concert or crowd you can hear them sing word for word right from the start... Queen and freddy stole the show that day infront of 75,000 people in the stadium and a few BILLION world wide....

Considering the conditions under which they performed that day at Live Aid, Queen's set was superb, compared with the Robert Plant+Jimmy Page LZ set, which suffered from a lot of technical issues.

Emma, sorry to hear about your channel being deleted. Good luck with the rebuild.
Queen's performance at Live Aid was not an accident. Ever the consummate professionals that they were, they hired a theatre in London and did nothing but rehearse solidly in the lead up for the concert, which was organised at very short notice. They drilled and worked on each of the tracks and in which order, so that they make the most out of the time they had been allocated. The end result... well you've now seen it for yourself.
The organisers (Bob Geldof and Midge Ure) had asked all the artists to perform from their back catalogue and not new material.
Now consider that the audience, some 70,000, packed into Wembley stadium, had all had their different reasons for attending, most would obviously be there to see some of the other acts in the star studded line up. So, with all that in mind, look at the way the audience is eating out of Freddie's hands AND how they ALL know every single song.
Queen had been on the go since the 70s and to many were considered to be on a downward trajectory, but this concert, broadcast around the world, was a massive boost, from which they never faded.
I forget exactly who it was, but was a seriously well known artist, who was heard back stage as Queen came off, to say 'How the F am I supposed to follow that?'.
Some other details to fill in the gaps. With so many artists, there was a real challenge to change the instruments and set up for the next band coming on, so the two comedians you see at the beginning of this clip (Mel Smith and Griff Rhys Jones) were there to fill in the gap between sets, and you can hear sound checks going on in the background. Interestingly, this WASN'T the end of Queen's performance at Live Aid. Freddie and Brian May went back on stage later on and performed 'Is This The World We Created', acoustically.

Emma, What a treat this reaction was! Not Freddie's best vocal performance as he had a bad throat that day, and had been advised by a doctor not to sing. But luckily of course he did, and so we have what is surely one of the most phenomenal performances ever from an entertainer at his absolute peak. Because time was very severely limited for each act on the day, they gave shortened versions of these songs, which if anything helped to limit the damage to his voice. But even though vocally below par, his performance was without compromise giving it full attack at every opportunity. I dread to think what that did to his vocal chords. For a different side to Freddie's beautiful voice you might like to react to one of the live versions of 'Love of My Life'. The one from Montreal in 1981 is arguably the best. (But both the one from Wembley and another from Rio (both in 1985) are well worth a listen.

I think that this can be shown without the fear of being baned or have a "strike" because it was for charity (live aid), so the groups there didn't claim copyrights or anything for it. I might be terrebly wrong

Brian May said the acoustics were so bad onstage that they just couldn't hear one another. No earpieces, no autotune. But they had rehearsed the set extensively to get the timing right (a very strict schedule). That's how professional they were as a band - very tight. You can see them giving one another visual cues as they go through. Freddie brings his arm down to end the last song exactly as the red light comes on at the end of their allotted time. Perfect timing.
