Thank you for this content. This was very comforting. 1) to know that it will take days and you will not see results overnight. 2) to know that baby feeding for longggg periods of time/getting fussy is normal. I was starting to think something was wrong with her suction because I was certain my supply was somewhat sufficient. Thank you again
@@tanyagermain there’s nothing wrong with partially breastfeeding along with supplementing. So let’s try to figure out what’s going on. She was getting enough in the beginning, right? We’re you using pumped milk often? How about her latch, you mentioned that you thought maybe suction but there could be an issue with how well she is transferring milk? Have you looked into a lip or tongue tie? Or High pallet?
Wow, thank you so much. Absolutely the most helpful video I found so far. My baby girl has been combo feeding for the last four months because she had really bad colic no matter what I would eat . She no longer has colic anymore and is seven months old however, over the last few days she has started to reject the bottle of formula and will only really take my breast which is kind of concerning so I’m highly considering just going back to full-time breast-feeding but I wanna make sure she is getting enough food. Thank you so much.
I’m glad it was so helpful! ❤️ If baby is having 6 or more wet diapers, every 24 hours, you know that she is getting enough. if she is refusing a bottle, that’s OK if you are available to breastfeed her. That does get a little stressful if you need to be away from her. If you do need to give a bottle, she may take pumped breastmilk better than formula. She may not take a bottle if you are around. Sometimes, you may need to totally leave the house and sometimes baby won’t even take the bottle from your partner. (because they know the boob is nearby) Have you started solids? Is that part of your concern that she’s not taking solids too? If so, that’s totally fine. If she doesn’t want to start solids right now. Solids are not needed until after one year. Breastmilk or formula should be her main source of nutrition until that point . Solids should just be taste at this point giving baby some samples to get used to them. Some babies won’t take solids until after 12 months. For many babies, starting solids too soon can actually cause baby to lose weight because their bodies not ready to absorb the nutrients. Breastmilk is digested even more completely as baby ages.❤️
Thank you for this video!! My baby is 1 month old had was breast feed until he was 4 days old- the day I left the hospital. At day 5 I noticed that he hadn’t peeped and would cry hysterically at night when I would try to feed him. My sister told me to pump to see how much milk I was getting. And I learned that I made 1 oz on both breast after a 30 minute pump when led me to exclusively pump until my supply increased which it did and has but now he won’t latch. He started latching again this week but I latch him after he drinks his milk in the bottle. But won’t latch when he’s really hungry. I’ve attempted to latch him but he quickly get extremely angry and refuses to suck. I do have to supplement with formula especially at night and he hates the formula so I have to make sure I’m pumping so he has milk every time he gets hungry. It’s been a lot and I’m tired of pumping. Thank you for this video I will try everything. But do you have any suggestions to get him to love the breast and not get angry that it doesn’t come out as fast at the bottle
@@LiveLaughTK Paced feeding will mimic breastfeeding. If baby gets a bottle very quickly, they sometimes won’t like the slower feed at the breast. This slower paced feeding will also help baby’s tummy to not get upset by the fast flow of the bottle and it helps mom to be a lot keep up with the pumping amount needed. This paced feeding isn’t always needed if baby is eating and a slower speed. This should not be started before baby has regained their birth weight. It also shouldn’t be used if baby is not taking in 24 ounces every 24 hours. Paced Feeding th-cam.com/video/NIDWewaslOQ/w-d-xo.html That’s so exciting that baby is latching now🥰. Keep in mind that baby can usually remove more milk than a pump. If baby is having 6 or more wet diapers every 24 hours, then you know for sure that they are getting enough. *In the next few weeks, baby may start cluster feeding. (If he hasn’t already). This may look like baby isn’t getting enough because they are fussy and pull off the breast. You’ll know that this isn’t because of hunger but instead from being overly tired, overly stimulated or just uncomfortable because of growing pains, if baby seems satisfied in the first half of the day AND having plenty of wet diapers. If baby still seems to not want the breast, be sure to not let you or baby get upset at the breast. When he starts to fuss, go ahead and give him a bottle. When he starts to slow down on the bottle a little bit, try offering the breast again. Stop again if he gets upset. Baby needs to be comfortable with the breast. Also, holding baby skin to skin as often as possible, helps baby to be more comfortable with the breast. Even feed a bottle with baby’s face next to the bare breast. ❤️
I am in the process of weaning off of formula supplement and wasn’t sure how. This video explained how perfectly. I am so thankful for the information. I want to breastfeed so badly and have just felt like a failure. My milk didn’t come in until 6 days pp and she had lost 14% of her body weight so the pediatrician wanted us to supplement. Now we are at 4 weeks and passed birthweight again so I am starting the weaning process.
I’m so glad that it helped mommy ❤️ 6 days can be very normal for your mature milk to come is. Day 5 is average. Did you have a hard delivery? Long labor, c section, IV fluids? Were there pregnancy issues? Gestational diabetes or preeclampsia (blood pressure issues)? Each one of these can really affect that weight loss. These things can cause extra water wait for you and for baby. This can make baby’s body weight higher than it would’ve been if these things didn’t happen. I have a video on us to explain it further. I’ll get that link for you. You’re doing awesome mommy! Keep going! Ask for all the help you need❤️
I just discovered your channel and I'm binge watching all your videos! My baby is 2 months old and I have been struggling with low supply since the beginning...she had jaundice from day 3 so we were heavily supplementing with formula, then a few days after when i went back to exclusively BF she wasn't gaining weight so we went back to mixed feeding. I've tried everything to get my supply up, pumping after BF, supplements, motilium, teas and nothing seems to have worked. I am triple feeding now for over 2 weeks and exhausted. She only seems satisfied after her first morning BF, all the rest i need to supplement with 2-3 oz...is there any hope at this stage? My thyroid is fine, any reason why nothing is working? After an hour of feeding i get around 20ml, the most i pump is at 3-4am without nursing before i get 2oz 😢
You have definitely been working very hard. I’m sorry that it’s been a struggle. 😢 Let me ask a few questions. I like lots of details. When you went to exclusively feeding from the breast, was she having 6 or more wet diapers every 24 hours? How old was she during that time? About how many days did you exclusively breastfeed? Have you seen a lactation counselor? Do you have any thoughts about why your supply is low?
Your video was super helpful! Thanks a ton! My baby is 2 weeks old, I was exclusively breastfeeding for first week but after that my baby would be crying n hungry even after breastfeeding for 1 to 1.5 hours.. he would end up sleeping while I feed him n would wake up crying n hungry.. I started to pump to feed him but I just have less than an ounce of milk coming out :( I started formula & baby drinks 2-3 ounces of formula milk at one feed.. I feel so terrible that im unable to produce this much milk for him :( Will try the technique you mentioned..I realllyy hope it works for us. Thank you again
Keep at it mommy ❤️ it may take a week or so to wean off but you can do it. The amount of milk you can pump is not a good indicator as to how much milk you have. Before starting formula, how many wet diapers was baby having a day?
@@faizakhan5805 Do you have a lactation counselor near by that can help you? A newborn can sometimes have trouble transferring milk. This will help to increase supply but it’s important to figure out if there’s something going on with the way baby latches on. ❤️
Baby is 6 weeks old and still combi feeding, I've been pumping in-between but he is always hungry after a breast and still has a full bottle after breastfeeding and it makes me feel useless. Swapping breasts and giving half a bottle is such a good idea. I'll be trying this tonight. Thank you all the way from the UK.
You can do this mommy! ❤️ Often baby is fussy and just needs to burp after a feeding. Swapping breasts, gives baby another letdown and increases supply. Baby usually realizes they’re full by the time you go back to the bottle. Some babies just need more soothing at this ago. Letting baby be on the breast more, fills that need. Just know that if you always see 6 or more wet diapers every 24 hours, baby is getting enough (a really heavy, wet diaper counts as 2) ❤️
@marycahillclc so I tried this for both of his night feeds, and it worked! He didn't even need the second half of his bottle. I'm so happy You're so right about slowing things down and allowing him to realise he is full. I definitely wasn't doing this before Thank you so much! 💓
You really are the best consultant ever❤️❤️❤️ May I ask one question? When my baby drink formula his stomach seems to look bigger more than when breastfed. But even that he seems to be fine and go straight to sleep. What I want to ask, How do we know when the breastfeeding is enough for the baby when his stomach is not as big as when he drink formula? I am sorry for the question, I am first time mom and very confuse🥹
@@imnowan1363 you can ask all the questions you want! ❤️ Baby’s tummy is sometimes bigger after formula because baby takes in more than breastfeeding. Bottles let the milk or formula flow fast so baby’s often don’t realize they are full and over eat. It won’t harm baby to overeat but some get a tummy ache later. Our bellies get big when we overeat too. (It can be uncomfortable for us, and it makes us sleepy too) When we breastfeed, we know baby has had enough when they come off the breast. You should offer the other breast (older babies don’t always take both breasts at one feeding). We also can know for sure that baby is getting enough, if we always see those 6 or more wet diapers every 24 hours. ❤️
I’m trying to wean off of 2 oz of formula not every feed but a lot of them! Thank you for this information ! I’m gonna try it starting now! Baby is already at the breast! Should I do this all night as well? She is almost 5 weeks!
It’s best to work in weaning off of the formula supplement at each feeding. Nurse off of both breasts then a small amount of formula, then back to the breast. During the night, baby might not want the formula supplement. You’ll know that baby is getting enough to eat if you always see those 6 or more wet diapers. It sounds like you’re ready to soon it. You can do it mommy! Don’t give up! ❤️
Hi Mary! Than❤k you for helping us through this milkyway journey. The link to ur videos is taking me to some irrelevant websites. Am I doing something wrong or is there an error?
@@Marianne-w7f It’s not you. There’s a problem with my website. The gal that designed it, accidentally let it not renew. So a company grabbed the web address right away and wants me to pay them to give it back. I’m just not sure how to move forward. I’ll probably just do a different website. 😢
Hi Mary, I need help. 2 months ago I caught Covid for the first time and was sick for 2 weeks. I had to stop breastfeeding because both me and baby was not well. Instead I decided to pump, but could only manage to do 2-3 sessions a day. I also took flu/cold medicine as well as Halls/Ricola cough drops throughout the entire time to combat symptoms. I had no idea medicine could decrease supply at the time and my supply through pumping showed evidence of that. My baby was now on mostly formula on top of solids. Now that I am recovered, I went back to breastfeeding but baby seemed frustrated and would stop nursing after 5 minutes. I decided to pump in place of breastfeeding so I can have an idea of baby’s intake. That’s when I discovered that my supply is almost all gone. I am only able to produce a total of 2oz a day from 4 pumping sessions (no breastfeeding). Baby is still on formula for the meantime until I am able to get my milk going again. But here lies the problem, I can’t seem to get it going even after power pumping daily for a whole week, my total output for the day is between 1-2 oz. I’m so sad and I really want to breastfeed again. What can I do to get my milk producing again?
I’m so sorry that you and baby were sick but I’m glad you’re feeling better now. How old is your baby now? Since you are able to get an ounce or two out a day that’s a good sign that you can get it back up where it needs to be. Pumping is not a good indicator of your milk supply. Baby can usually get out much more milk than the pump can. The very best way to increase your milk supply is by having baby on the breast as often as possible. If you can nurse baby on both breasts, then give half of the formula in a bottle, then put baby back to the breast for as long as baby will stay on , then offer for the rest of the formula bottle. Having baby on and off the breast often and having baby stay on the breast as long as possible, are the very best ways to increase that supply. You can do power pumping in addition to this. Be sure to add lots and lots of breast massage before, and in between the power pumping sessions. The power pumping must be done every day at around the same time. So if you decide to Power pump every day mid morning, continue that during mid morning. It doesn’t work to power pump at 10 AM today and then 2 PM tomorrow. Your body will make more milk if you consistently take it out at the same time every day. When you do pump, it’s important to remember that you will make more milk in the first half a day then you will in the afternoon and evening. But your milk in the evening is slightly higher in fat. This is why babies will often eat more often in the evening. ❤️
Hi Mary, my baby is 9 months. Thank you for the detailed explanation, I did not know a lot, especially about power pumping at the same time everyday. I was doing it at random times, usually when I have the availability to dedicate an hour of pumping without any distractions. I am determined to make these changes and get back on track to breastfeeding with my baby. Thank you so much for your guidance.@@marycahillclc
Your video was Godsend, as i eas having difficult time to finslise what process is going to help me. My baby birth weight was3kg, discharge weight: 2.740 i was having oversupply snd clogged and very heavy breasts at that time. she was latching good which was confirmed by the lactation consultant at the hospital itself. i was feeding jer on demand. she would feed for 30-45 mins and would leave the breast herself, once done. But would start showing hunger cues 10-15mins after put to bed. Also she started longer at night time6-7hrs. All this happened in the first month. We went to her check up post-1month, the weight was 3.040kg. I was shocked and shattered. Doctor asked to start formula immediately and also continue Breastfeeding. Sfter the formula, shr would sleep quite immediately so despite breastfeeding her, breasts weren't getting emptied and after two weeks now the dupply has gone down. Afyer seeing your video, now I understand that i should have offered breast first and then the formula/bottle. I started your method from today. But she is fussing a lot. During yhis gew times she rrfused bresst and bottle both. Now i afraid as what am I doing wrong. Please help as i wanted to breastfeed exclusively.

Hi! I just discovered your TH-cam chanel, and have watch soo many of your videos! It’s so easy to understand, and you cover about everything! I’ve learned so much from you, thank you❤️ There is something I need help with. My first baby is 8 weeks old now. I was very sick the first 3 weeks after birth, so we gave formula in addition to breastfeeding. We gave at most 2 ounces of formula three times a day. The last month we have worked our way down to exclusively breastfeeding. He is happy and seems full and satisfied at nighttime and in the mornings/ days. It’s just the evenings that is still a problem. He has been clusterfeeding many hours every night the last month (about 5-9pm). The last week with no formula. But it seems he is never satisfied! He still wants to clusterfeed the next day. He is very fuzzy and giving hunger cues whenever he is not at the breast. Am I still not producing enough milk in the evenings? I know he is getting enough milk, though. He has MANY wet diapers a day, and is growing a lot. It’s just exhausting to cluster feed every night. Why is this? Why am I not starting to produce more milk in the evenings, after so much time spent at the breast? How long will it take? Is it because he didn’t exclusively breastfeed the first 3 weeks? Have I ruined it for myself? Or is he not really hungry in the evenings? I now it’s normal to cluster feed sometimes (“witching hour”), but EVERY night..? I hope I am making sense, and I really hope you can answer my questions ❤️ Thanks again❤️
I like long comments. It help when I have more details. 🥰 Some babies do cluster feed a lot. Often babies have big growth spurts where they cluster feed HARD for a week or two (maybe linger) it is so tiring. 😴 When babies cluster feed, they don’t need or want more milk. It hurts to grow so quickly. And baby’s gums can hurt at times, even though you won’t see teeth for quite a while. Breastmilk has natural painkillers in it, plus mommies arms are comforting. Your evening supply is always lower but it has slightly higher fat. This helps baby to sleep longer but they have to eat often too. . You know he is getting enough because he’s having lots of wet diapers. You’ve worked hard to get to exclusively breastfeeding. That’s not easy. I know this is hard too but it will get better. Ask for help from family and friends if possible. Ask others to help with household things in the evening. 🥰 Are you nursing on both breast each feeding? Especially in the evenings?
@@marycahillclc Oh! I thought that every time baby shows hunger cues (opens mouth, searches for breast etc), it means that he is hungry. It’s good to know that’s not the case! I’m so relieved the problem is not that I have “ruined” my milk supply by giving formula the first three weeks. I have heard that the first three weeks is so important to establish the right amount of milk, so I was a little worried about this- that it was “too late”. Thank you🙏🏼 When my baby cluster feeds, he sucks on one side about 10 mins, then falls happily asleep. I let him sleep there for about 10 min (or longer), he seems so content. Then I try to put him away to do something else, and he starts crying. Only thing that helps is putting him to the breast again, then I put him on the OTHER breast. And so it goes through the evening, until he sleeps more deeply. Maybe I shouldn’t let him sleep by the breast? Thanks, I will ask for help in the evenings❤️
@@stinetangen91 😃 you’re doing great! It is best to get that supply established in the first weeks but you can still get there. It’s just more work and you’ve done the work. I would let him seem full or fall asleep on the first side, then switch breasts right then. He will wake up a bit, especially when your milk lets down. He might nurse for another 10 min but he might fall asleep in a few seconds. If he falls asleep right away, then don’t push him, just lay him down. You’ll get a “little” longer stretch then. ❤️
So happy to find contents like this ❤. I am really strugling with feeding my baby. In less than 5 days he turns 4 months old and i have tried it all 🥲 and right now i'm having the worst time to be honest. My supply has dropped like crazy because baby is not latching at all anymore. He got used to the bottle since day one and we were at the hospital for about the whole first month because of his illness. He used to latch but didn't seem to get milk out of the breasts and i was always engorged. Due to the stress my milk supply dropped overnight and i continued tripple feeding for about 2 and a half months. Breastfeeding pumping and formula supplementing. Now that he is older seeing that the milk does not come from the breast easly and in a very small quantity, he doesn't latch at all and gets fussy all the time. Cries a lot everytime i put him on the breasts. I really hope i could manage to increase the supply and get him to feed directly on the breast. I don't know if it is possible and i am afraid i am way too late to do that. 😥
@@edisavejko5133 I’m so sorry mommy🥲. You are doing an AMAZING job! Even a small amount of breastmilk is beneficial. The benefits of the milk you’ve provided so far will stay with baby’s body for the rest of their life! This won’t be easy but it is possible. Finding a local lactation counselor would probably be helpful. How often are you pumping? How many mls/ounces are you getting at a pumping and about how much every 24 hours? I have a couple of videos for you. This first one is Nursing Strike. To get baby to the breast, you need to try latching baby at every feeding BUT stop as soon as baby starts to fuss. It’s not an overnight fix but with consistency, you’ll start to see an increase. What makes more milk is moving milk often and stimulation. You’ll need to do lots and lots of breast massage before and during pumping. You’ll need to be pumping as often as baby eats. @@marycahillclc Thanks a lot for being so supportive. I really appreciate that 🥰. Right now im pumping about every 2-3 hours and only in the morning i make around 80-120 ml. Then during the day it is always around 20 to 40 ml max. I used to make double the amount and sometimes even more but right now this is the best i could make. After seeing your videos i realize that not giving the neccesary stimulation is my main problem for my decreased supply. Also me stressing out and crying everyday about it is another big problem. Thanks again for adressing the two other videos to me. I will continue trying to inform and understand things better and won't give up. ❤
@@edisavejko5133 You’re right! The stimulation is so important. Try to take some slow deep breaths when you begin to pump. You can apply heat along with the massage before pumping. This will help with a faster letdown. Looking at pictures of baby or talking and playing with baby while you pump, will help a lot. Your supply is a low but you can get it up. On average, babies take in about 24 ounces every 24 hours when they are exclusively breastfed and feeding from the breast. Sometimes babies will take in more than they need from a bottle. We definitely want the baby to have all that they want and need, but it helps to have a slower, flow nipple and take a couple of short breaks during the bottle feeding. (this is called paced feeding). Keep in mind that our milk supply goes down as the day goes on. This is completely normal. When we have less milk in the afternoon, it is higher in fat.
Thank you for this video! Currently trying to get my supply up for my 5 week old so we can make the switch to breastfeeding only. Does comfort nursing help increase supply? One of our main struggles is him falling asleep as soon as he latches. Any advice is greatly appreciated!
Yes! Comfort nursing helps increase supply. I tell moms to let baby use you like a human pacifier. That extra stimulation is a key to increasing/maintaining supply. Even though baby isn’t swallowing as often, baby is still getting milk and that small amount has slightly more fat in it. It can be hard to keep baby awake. Sometimes you need to strip baby down to just a diaper to keep them awake. I’ll attach my video on keeping baby awake. How to Keep Baby Awake while Nursing th-cam.com/video/UV7FmgiBLmo/w-d-xo.html
Thank you momma,I learnt something new now. My breastis not flowing well with much milk i have drank enough white wine etc but no much change. We are just 5 weeks and my baby has finished 4 tins of 400g formula. He will suck but always crying that means he's not getting enough. But once you give him 120ml of feeder he will rush it within 2 seconds. I will soon start work on July and I also want my breast milk to be flowing well so that I can be able to pump out milk. Sorry for the long post and reply me momma thank you.
I like long posts, that helps me to better understand what’s happening ❤️ When did you start formula? Was baby nursing well in the first few weeks? How many wet diapers was baby having every day before starting formula? Babies will often cry for other reasons than being hungry. The afternoon and evening times are when baby is overly tired or uncomfortable because they are growing so quickly. Did baby seem satisfied in the morning after nursing but not in the evening?
@@marycahillclc I started in his first week of birth because he was not latching well always crying because of my inverted nipples. He has sucked it out now with so much sores on my nipples now.he sucks very now but still drink formula well too.I really want my breast milk to be full so that I can pump it out.i tried it but is not coming out via the pump but he sucks with his mouth.
Yes he got satisfied with both in the morning but night will cry, still sucks all the night but will always dilute it with formula before he will sleep.we have sucked 2 times with formula too as iam writing to you since1am till 2.07 am now.
@@OdinakaFaith-zj9wr If you’re having painful nipples, then there is something wrong. It’s usually baby’s latch and position but it can be that baby has a lip or tongue tie. When baby is happy at the breast in the morning but not at night, that’s a sign that baby is probably just overly tired at night. Many babies are very fussy at night. This is because they are uncomfortable. It hurts to grow so quickly. Babies out grow this but it can last for many weeks. It can be really hard to calm baby down during the evenings. It can seem like baby is still hungry when they really aren’t. It’s ok to give formula if you’re not sure but it’s best to let baby latch before and after the formula. This will best increase supply. Anytime that baby gets formula, it’s important to pump too. So if baby nurses, then has formula. You need to pump as soon as you can after that. Whenever you pump, add lots of breast massage before pumping. This adds breasts stimulation to tell your body to make more milk. If baby isn’t latching, pumping needs to be at about the same time every day to see an increase in supply. It takes 3 to 5 days of consistent pumping to start to see an increase in supply The increase will be slow but it will increase. If possible, see a lactation counselor near by to help with latching baby. ❤️

What would i do if she still fusses after getting half her usual formula feed and being on the breast the 2nd time? Do i give her half the formula again?
@@nnekaanumba Yes, we want baby to have all that they need and want. At first, baby will be receiving the same amount of formula at the feedings but will be latched on both breast, given 1/2 of normal formula, latched again on both breasts, then given the 2nd half of the formula (unless baby doesn’t want it). Baby will start to not want as much of that 2nd half of formula. ❤️
Thanks! Since week 3 I have a low supply issue after I had engorged breasts w fever likely due to exhaustion and baby wasn’t gaining weight so I had to start supplementing. I am now week 7 and I’ve kept offering the breast plus pumping here and there when I can (v hard to do when baby wants to stay on you almost at all times). I’d love to breastfeed only but I am now at a confused phase where I’ve got some milk coming out but baby gets distracted / sleepy when at the breast, so after he falls asleep etc I usually give him formula - sometimes it’s only v few minutes after. Otherwise I fear he takes forever and then misses out on good wake windows. Finally, sometimes I pump as soon as I have time but then he wakes up shortly thereafter and I feel like my breasts are too empty for him, which makes me unsure about pumping itself… In other words: - what to do when an otherwise v awake baby falls asleep at breast / plays w it instead of eating (while eats consistently from bottle) - how to introduce pumping in such a way that is not damaging to the breastfeeding session?
It’s very normal for baby to fall asleep at the breast. They are warm and cozy when held close to your body. Breastfed babies eat much slower than bottle fed babies. Feeding from the breast is more work than a bottle. If you’re going to pump, it’s best to pump as close to the time that baby takes anything from a bottle. If you pump and baby wakes up and wants to nurse, give the breast. Your letdown will be slower and it will be a little less milk but that milk is higher in fat. You can definitely give formula after he falls asleep if that gives you more comfort but babies who have regained their birthweight can tell you when they are hungry. You can trust baby to let you know and you can know that it’s enough if baby has 6 or more wet diapers every 24 hours. Giving formula makes baby be full longer. So it will be longer before baby nurses again. This will tell your body that baby needs less milk and less often. Pumping at around the same time as formula will help, but baby on the breast helps more. I know it occupies your time but if you’d like to get to exclusively breastfeeding, it’s essential. Going back and forth between both breasts at each feeding, can help to wake up baby and give baby more milk. I know that it can be difficult to exclusively breastfeed. It’s ok for you to decide what’s best for you. ❤️
My baby only feeds for about 5min on one side few min on other. She gets super fussy and that I went to formula. I also have an 17month old and a 6 year old. Formula feeding just made it easier for me. I want to go back to breast feeding and am stressed out by the it. I just pumped today for 20min on each side and I didn't even get 1oz total. Hmm. I'm frustrated and think I'm losing my supply. My baby will feed good at late night or early morning pretty good. But with formula she sleeps longer. Please help and I will see if she will take the breast every feeding and then cut down on the formula. Like you said formula is expensive.
So sorry that’s it stressful right now mommy. 🥰. How old is your baby? Some babies are fast at transferring milk and may just nurse for 5 or 10 minutes. 1 ounce pumped shows that you are producing milk so you’ll be able to build from here. It’s normal for babies to eat less often when they have formula. Breastmilk digests faster so baby will need to nurse more often. ❤️
My baby is almost 10 wks . I only exclusively breast fed her for two weeks then began doing bottle feeds with formula and expressed milk. I decided to go back to just breast feeding and now she won’t feed on my breast she will cry and cry ! It’s so frustrating because I don’t have her to have an aversion to my breasts so I wait until she calms down then offer my breast and she will start to cry hysterically she won’t even suck
I’m so sorry mommy 😞. This is so frustrating but you can get through it and get her back to the breast. Spend as much time with her skin to skin for her to be comfortable with the breast. Offer the breast as often as possible and don’t let her get upset at the breast. I have a video that will explain it better on how to get baby back to the breast. I’ll link it here. You got this Mommy! ❤️ th-cam.com/video/qU-U0IDMHqY/w-d-xo.html
Thank you for your great video, my baby is 2 weeks old. My nipple was soar and bleedy at the beginning because my colostrum seemed not enough and baby had very strong latch, so we stopped breastfeeding and gave her formula. I had to pump my breasts the first 4-5 days and then started breastfeeding. Now baby doesn’t get full with my milk, she eats around 60 ml my milk and then top up with formula for 30 to 60 ml more. I am so worried that I couldn’t do exclusive breastfeeding. I would appreciate if you advice me how I can catch up with her demand
Thanks for all the info . I have a query regarding nursing vacation. Is it ok to supplement during a vacation if the baby is fussy or demands for more immediately after feed ?
Definitely! But.. if you can supplement, then when baby is slowing down on the bottle , latch baby again. You’ll usually have another letdown and that, on and off again, will help a ton with supply. I would also pump again after baby is all done. Anytime something goes into baby, something should come out if you. So, because you supplemented, you should do another little pumping. You might not get anything but that’s ok. ❤️
Defiantly amazing information… I have spent hundreds on supplements, different pumps and flanges and everything when honest I wouldn’t even pump 5 times a day . I was really going thru a lot and fighting with me husband about supplementing… I would go to breastfeed the baby he would run and give her the bottle I had just gave up . But 9 month later I’m struggling to pick up my supply
I am so sorry mommy 😢 You’re journey hasn’t been a fair one. Would you like to get back to breastfeeding more? We can work on it 🥰 Tell me more about how things are going now.
@@marycahillclc currently I am back to maybe about 5 ml one breast and 1 ml in the other. I showed her father I had enough for her … he still went against everything . He said in his country formula is better 💔. So today . I gave been trying to get it right since then but definitely been not successful. I was very weak and tired and stressed so much that some days I didn’t have the energy to pump. @@gabriellakorda7477 People who love you, just want to make things better when they see you struggling. Maybe if you can have a serious talk (when baby isn’t fussy) and explain how much this means to you. Tell him that you know it will be hard. I alwaysbstruggle with not enough milk for baby. My baby is 1 month today and i atarted supplementing at 1 week already cuz i was afraid of letting her hunger. But now i really want to try weaning off of formula. I give her formula through a tube thing that the lactation consultant recommended. Wish me luck😥
Just go slow. No rush. You’ll know when baby is ready to reduce the formula if you follow these steps in the video. The tube that you have, is called a supplemental nursing system. If baby is fed with that, while at the breast, it helps to increase supply but I usually only use that if a mom isn’t producing milk at all. Do you know why you weren’t making enough milk? You can do this momma! ❤️
@marycahillclc thank you for the encouragement ❤️. No I don't know why. I just know my other 2 babies were never satisfied and so with this 1 I had a fear right away that she wouldn't get satisfied so thats why I started with the tube they offered right away. But as I'm learning more and more about frequently breastfeeding = more milk, it has gotten my hopes up that maybe i can still exclusively breastfeed if I try it
@@jd4262 as long as baby always has 6 or more wet diapers every 24 hours, you know they’re getting enough. Babies will often be fussy and cluster feed in the evening. That can make us think that our supply is low when it isn’t. 🥰
My twins are 6 weeks old. I have reduced the formula bottles i used intially because of my health post c-section but still struggling to reduce to 1 bottle in the night. How to manage switching breast with twins?
@@izzahayesha90 You won’t be able to switch twins but you can nurse until they come off of the breast. Then give just 1/2 of their usual bottles, then back to the breast, then offer the rest of the bottle. Night feedings are often quick to wean off of that late bottle. In just a few days, they won’t want the 2nd bottle. When we switch breasts, it’s to boost supply a little (or keep it sustained). A single baby is usually on the 2nd side for just a few seconds. Having twins, both babies are each on a breast for a full feeding time. So, no need to worry about switching breasts. You can know that your babies are getting enough if they always have 6 or more wet diapers every 24 hours. Babies are sometimes fussy in the evening/night. It can be because they are extra tired, over stimulated or going through a growth spurt. A growth spurt doesn’t mean that babies need or want more to eat but it can hurt to grow so fast and eating is comforting. Breastmilk has some natural painkillers in it and mommy’s arms are comforting. Babies will seem satisfied in the morning but as the day goes on, they don’t seem very satisfied. This is cluster feeding. It’s usually rough for a week then gets better. There’s a big growth spur at around 6 weeks. There will usually be several of these growing spurts in the first months. 🥰
Very helpful! I was going to start a weaning process from kellymom. This makes more sense to me. So put baby on both breast, supplement with 1-2 oz, then put baby on your breast again and finish off with formula?
Hi Ruth! Yes. That’s right. How old is your baby? Just to clarify, this is to help you to wean off of formula so that you will get back to exclusively breastfeeding. You are wanting to wean off of formula to return to fully breastfeeding, correct? Or are you wanting to wean baby from breastfeeding and move towards fully formula feeding? Either way is great, I just want to be sure that I’m giving you the right information for what you are wanting to do.

When you do transition to the breast, it will be important to monitor babies diaper count. There should always be 6 or more wet diapers every 24 hours.
My baby was born preterm (35 weeks old) she was so small, her mouth was small as well! In the hospital, the nurses didn’t guide me correctly, in fact they directly took the baby to feed her a bottle, I too didn’t have enough knowledge at that time, and allowed the nurses to do the same….my baby was bottle fed exclusively for 7-8 days, after that, I started noticing leaks in my breast..so I took a hitler step that I regret, to shift her completely from bottle to breast…her weight started decreasing and it started concerning me.. Well, now she’s three weeks old, and I breastfeed her on both the sides, and then give her 2 ounces of formula during every feeding session! I want to stop her formula feeds..I just don’t know how…can you please guide me!
Hello. My baby was born premature, she also had to stay for a month in the NICU. So my milk supply is drying out. I want to wean her off the formula for exclusive breastfeeding. She is small in size. Another problem I have is that I was hypertensive during the pregnancy and after. I am currently taking medication for it. But I cannot give her breast milk because it can lower her blood pressure. So she is home now I am supplementing with formula for now. Whatever advice and tips would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
I’m so sorry that you’re had a rough start. Are you on a blood pressure medication? BP medication is often given safely to breastfeeding mothers. 🤔 To keep your supply up, be sure to pump every 2 to 3 hours and add LOTS of breast massage before and during pumping. The massage adds the stimulation that a pump can’t provide. If your supply is low, it will take at least 3 to 5 days of constant pumping with massage to start to see an increase. The increase will be slow but you’ll see it. Keep in mind that your pumping output will be much less in the afternoon and evening. This is very normal. A full milk supply would be an average of 24 ounces every 24 hours. This amount would stay the same from one month to six months old. It can vary a little bit from day-to-day, but it stays pretty close to 24 ounces. Formula fed baby usually takes more than that amount as they get older but breast milk works differently. Baby utilizes it differently as they get older. ❤️ How old is baby now? About how many ounces are you pumping every 24 hours? If you’d like, you can share with me the medication name that you’re on and I might be able to give you some more information on it. ❤️
Thank you for the videos! Mostly stressed here.. I ended up supplementing because although he was latching properly since birth (now 12 days old) he had a tongue tie and not getting enough weight, making my milk supply worse and worse.. now i am pumping 10-12 times a day, while he gets the bottle.. started to be fussy at the breast but i want to get him back, I hope it is still possible. 😢
@@mariakoroni7323 Let’s try to work through this mommy❤️ In the 10 to 12 pumpings a day, how much milk are you getting at each pumping and how much total every 24 hours? Did you have the tie released? When was that? Will he latch at the breast now if you try?
@@marycahillclc thanks for the direct response! I get a minimum of 25 ml (ca. 1 Oz), 85 ml (3 Oz) at best.. I notice an increase of the average amount after 5 days of exclusively pumping. The tie was released a week ago and now started latching him again and he is doing a better job each time..

Hi mommy! Are you able feed at the breast with out pain now? Are you feeding her on both breasts each feeding? Have you been feeding like I describe in this video? (Breast, formula, breast all in a feeding) Is baby’s fussy time, mostly in the afternoon and evening, or is it all day?

Hi Mary, so glad I found your channel. My baby is 2 months old now and up until recently he's been exclusively bottle fed, usually 80% formula and 20% breastmilk since I have low supply. Breastfeeding didnt work out in the early weeks because we discovered baby had tongue tie. After getting it released via laser it took him a while to learn to use his new tongue so i delayed breastfeeding even more. I regret this so much now that i know better. I could only pump 4 times/day due to the excessive washing of pump/bottle parts and chores. Recently I've been trying to breastfeed him for most feeds and supplementing with formula since his latch is better, but i found out today i got my period! Now im afraid my supply will tank even more. I only produce on avg 1.5oz from both breasts per 20min pump session, 2oz at best. Please help! 😢 I want to exclusively breastfeed my baby so bad and i want to know if it's still a realistic goal.
Hi Mommy! Most moms/babies don’t see much of a drop when your period returns. If there is a drop, it’s usually when you ovulate. That would have been about 2 weeks ago. If there is a slight decrease in supply, your milk will have slightly more fat. That’s not usually a problem for baby. Are you latching baby at every feeding? When are you pumping to see the 1.5 to 2ounces? (Right after a feeding, an hour later or in place of a feeding?)
@@marycahillclc Thanks for the reassurance Mary, hopefully my period won't affect my supply. 🙏 I usually get 2oz from pumping first thing in the morning when my supply is best. 1.5 oz for the rest of the day per session. The only time I pump is in place of a feeding, I never pump after already latching baby because my nipples are too sore after. I'm trying to eventually replace all my pumping sessions with latching baby because I hate pumping and it hurts more than breastfeeding for me. But if the only way to increase my supply is to do both then I'll do it. 😢
@@AmetheystSpiral The best way to increase supply is by having baby at the breast, as long and as often as possible. I just ask about pumping to determine what supply is like. You shouldn’t be sore from breastfeeding or pumping. It’s really important to figure out what’s causing the pain. Do you have any idea what can be causing the pain?
@marycahillclc I think the pain from pumping is caused by not aligning the flange to my nipple properly. I'll try to have baby latch more often and see if it'll boost my supply. Thank you so much!
@@AmetheystSpiral Is breastfeeding causing any pain or is it just the pumping? You’ll also need to be sure that the pump flange is sized correctly for your nipple size. If it’s too large or too small, it can be painful and it can cause you to pump less milk. Your nipple should be able to move up and down inside the flange tunnel but not pull in very much of the areola. What kind of pump do you have?
My baby is 2 month old now, he was on combination feeding now. After birth, He has been in nicu for three days and was formula fed there as i didnt able to get a single drop of breast milk. I contined to exclusively formula feed him for about two weeks as i worked on increasing my milk supply through medication as well as painful pumping session, i would just get 15 ml each pumping on both breast of about 20 min session then it graually increased but still its not enough for my baby. Its been 2 months and i get 50 ml, and sometimes only 30 ml of breast milk each session and i pump for about 7 timez a day. Thus i give him formula 5 times (90 ml each feed). I dont know whats wrong and why my milk supply is not increasing and i also dont know whether its ok to rely more on formula...i feel guilty for not able to exclusively breastfeed him.
Oh mama, please don’t feel guilty 🥰. You’ve worked really hard at this and you have seen improvement. You are doing a great job! Even a small amount of breastmilk is beneficial to baby. Those benefits stay with baby for the rest of their life. We know that you can make some milk but your body may not be able to make a full supply. If so, that’s not your fault and formula is a great alternative to breastmilk. Pumping shouldn’t hurt. Do you know why it hurt? Have you tried hand expressing? Has baby fed from the breast at times? When you pump, do you add lots of breast massage? Was the medication, a prescription? During birth, how were you? Could you have had retained placenta? Any hemorrhaging? Do you have thyroid disease or PCOS? These next questions are more personal so don’t answer if you aren’t comfortable. Are your breasts more tubular shaped instead of round? Is there an extra wide gap between your breasts? Is one breast noticeably smaller than the other?
Thank you for the informative video. Tbf, I've been reading and learning about this for days already but still concerned that it might not be possible. I had my son 4 weeks ago and he showed up at 34 weeks gestation. I really wanted to breastfeed but it took him 3 weeks to latch and the suck-swallow mechanism. The NICU team then took him off the feeding tube and moved us to responsive breastfeeding but after 2 days, he seemed to be cluster feeding but actually his nappies became dry + he lost weight. Theories were, maybe he's still too small to fully breastfeed snd loses more calories than he drinks or maybe my supply is rubbish. So now I am breastfeeding and then pumping and supplementing with roughly 2oz of formula. It has only been a few days of this regime and I dont want to let formula take over. Do you think him being preterm will cause issues or can I still successfully ween him off?
Most moms can wean off of formula but when baby has had a rough start, it may be slow to happen. Moms are often told that baby is burning more calories than they are taking in when breast-feeding. Many breast-feeding experts do not agree with this theory. If baby is not having enough wet diapers, it could be because mom‘s supply is low or because baby is not able to transfer the milk well. The most important thing is to be sure that baby is fed, but as baby grows stronger, it is usually possible to wean off of formula. So for right now, you are putting baby to breast every feeding, then giving a supplement of formula. Correct? Then you also pump after? Are you storing that pumped milk or giving it to baby? About how much milk are you getting in each of those pumping sessions?
@@marycahillclc thank you for replying! Yes, at the moment I'm putting baby to breast then topping up with 60ml of formula. And then I do try to pump afterwards or in-between feedings but haven't been consistent with it. I don't seem to get much volumes. When I was exclusively pumping (before he learnt to latch), I was getting about 150ml in 24 hours. At the moment, I'm not sure. I get maybe 30ml in total from the first pumping session in the morning and then about 10-15ml every time afterwards.
@@NM-de2fr 150 ml per 24 hours is a really low amount. Was it a little higher right after giving birth? Were you able to start pumping right after birth? Have you seen a local lactation counselor? It will honestly be a lot of work to increase that much but you can definitely try. Have you ever heard of an SNS (supplemental nursing system)? It’s a tube taped to your breast where baby is receiving a supplement while at the breast. You need to be massaging your breasts (for 10 minutes) before pumping. You’ll need to be pumping at least as often as baby nurses. Since baby is taking if a full amount of formula, you’ll really need to stay on that. I don’t mean to discourage you. You can do this but it will be a lot of work and I would see a local LC as soon as possible. ❤️
@@marycahillclc It took a good week or more to start seeing any milk. I was hand expressing from maybe 12 hours after birth but getting a drop of colustrum here and there. Not sure if it was to do with preterm labour or my history of pcos but the milk supply was just non existent. It steadily increased up to 150ml but since then I haven't been tracking properly as I started breastfeeding. The breastfeeding specialists around me just suggested lots of skin to skin and pumping 8-10 times a day. I just don't know whether keeping up with that will yield any results but I don't really want to give up just yet. SNS doesn't sound like it's for me tbh but I'll look into it. Thank you again x
@@NM-de2fr I was just going to ask if you had PCOS. That’s not always a deal breaker but it can definitely have an impact of producing milk. I would still try again with any future babies though. If this is your first baby, the body has a harder time getting milk going. Premature birth doesn’t make a huge impact by itself but it often causes a delay in pumping because of everything going on at that time. Skin to skin, breast massage and pumping will be best for supply. See how the SNS goes. You’re doing a great job mommy! I’m proud of you for seeking help. ❤️
I find this video so reassuring. It was gives me hope. My baby is 11 Weeks old and she was only 6lbs 10oz when she was born. She dropped a bit too much after birth, 12%. She is now 8lbs 12oz. When she dropped alot of weight our midwife told us to supplement and we are weaning off that supplement as I would like to exclusively breastfeed. She's only having about 3oz of Formula top up over 24 hours and is exclusively breastfed overnight. She's only gaining about 3oz-5oz a week at the moment and midwives aren't concerned but I really want to help her gain more. Can you please advise? I have just bought a spectra s1 (previously using an elvie stride wearable) - would power pumping once a day help? I've tried pumping after each Feed before but I find that makes my baby frustrated when they come to feed - as if I have depleted the supply for her next feed. Thank you
Do you know baby’s weight at four weeks, eight weeks and currently? Is baby having six or more wet diapers every 24 hours? When you’ve been pumping after feedings, how much milk did you get out at each pumping session? The best way to increase supply is by having baby at the breast as long and as often as possible. Letting baby use you like a human pacifier will increase supply faster than pumping. You can power pump but it’s a lot of work. You can do a mini power pump session. That means that after baby is done nursing, you then wait about 10 minutes and pump just once. If you want to do this extra pumping, it’s best to stay at a consistent time each day. That is great that you got a new pump. Hands-free pumps are really best for Mom‘s who have a forceful letdown/overly. They can reduce mom‘s Supply if she’s needing to pump on a regular basis using the hands-free pump.
Thank you so much. At 4 weeks she was 7lbs 1oz, at 8 weeks she was 8lbs 3oz and now at 11 weeks she is 8lbs 12oz. She has 6 wet nappies a day and is lovely and alert and is hitting milestones early.
@@superstarcozzy at this age, most moms will only see a few drops of milk pumped after a feeding, unless she is pumping on a regular basis after each feeding. If you can see 1 to 2 ounces after a feeding, that can be a sign of a forceful letdown/over supply. Here’s my three part video series on the condition. the first video will just help you to determine if you may have this condition. Mom’s often believe that they have a low supply when they actually have an over supply. Mom’s with an over supply, that is not under control can have slightly less fat their milk. You can increase your supply but to do so, you’ll need to latch baby at the breast as often as possible. You’ll need to pump, any time that baby receives formula so that your supply increases. Only you can decide if you’re able to pump and nurse that often. Even just a small amount of breastmilk for a few weeks, along with formula is beneficial to baby. Be sure that you enjoy this time with your baby. ❤️
Hi Mary, when you say stay on one breast as long as possible. Do you mean to let her unlatch by herself? As my baby can go up to 30-40 mins on each breast if I don’t unlatch her. My baby is entering 6 weeks old.
@@archer1991 Let baby stay until baby releases or seems to be asleep. 😴 Then switch sides. Newborns can take a long time to nurse. Some babies nurse for 5 or 10 minutes, while others can take 30 minutes or even an hour. Many babies stay latched, even while they’re sleeping. Baby is using you as a human pacifier. Letting baby use you as a human pacifier is a great thing when you can. Baby will still be taking in a small amount of milk, and that milk has slightly more fat in it. ❤️ Are you working to increase supply and wean off of formula? What things were showing you that your supply was low? If baby wakes up when you take them off the breast, and they are not fussy or just a little fussy and you switch baby to the other side without offering formula in the middle, your supply would be great. You can know for sure the babies getting enough, by counting wet diapers. As long as baby has six or more wet diapers every 24 hours you know they’re getting enough.
@@marycahillclc thank you for your advice! I was just wondering how long to wait because she can take 40 mins or so to suckle if I do not unlatch her. And I’ve heard that I should cap each breast to 15-20 mins on each side. I’m looking to increase my supply as she is lasting only about 2hrs per feed. And sometimes not even 2hrs, perhaps 1 hr 30 mins- 1hr 45 mins. And she is hungry again, quite tiring honestly. Especially since she takes so long at each breast. And not long after she is hungry again.
@@archer1991 That’s common advice to do 15 minutes one side then 15 minutes on the other side but that’s really bad advice. Doing that, gives baby less fat. It is so tiring when baby wants to eat so often but it will get better soon. ❤️
I want to know just taking one glass of wine will be alright because I'm kind of scared and I didn't drink through my whole pregnancy I didn't drink at all nothing this is just like one drink on the celebrate and that's it then I'm not a big-time Drinker I just want to let off some steam you want to have some fun with family I just want to know if one glass of wine will be fine
You can definitely have a drink while breastfeeding. 🍷 Some experts say that you don’t even need to wait at all but others say to wait 2 hours after you finish the drink. I’m a bit on the cautious side and I say wait 2 hours. At 1 hours after you’ve finish the drink, your blood alcohol is at its highest but then starts to decrease. Here’s a link to my video on that ❤️ th-cam.com/video/_jE9GEIiTig/w-d-xo.html
Hello my baby is now 13 weeks old and in the beginning i gave my baby formula a few times because my baby lost too much weight in the beginning. And i was having lots of pain from breastfeeding so i was told to pump after feeding him to get my supply up. I pump about 4 to 5 times a day but started power pumping and my supply has increased. But everytime i stop pumping to just breastfeeding i notice my supply decreases. I wanna know what im supposed to do once i have a good supply so that i dont have to pump anymore and just exclusively breastfeed without having to supplement with anything and not have my supply drop.
@marycahillclc in the past mainly in the evening he would be hungry even after I feed him or he would have a dry diaper in the morning so I would go back to pumping and noticed I wasn't getting as much as when I pumped regularly. About a week ago I pumped almost 4 ounces after feeding him in the morning. That's the most I've ever had. But the last few days I haven't been able to pump as much maybe just 2 to 3 times a day and I stopped power pumping and I noticed already a decrease. I power pumped again tonight and was only able to get 1.5 ounces total. I also noticed my baby getting fussy and pulling while I'm feeding him.
@@ferdousmohamed5116 it’s common for baby to be fussy in the evening and seem like they’re not getting enough. They usually want to eat more often in the evening, sometimes every hour. Since baby woke up with a dry diaper, then that is showing that your supply is low. Keep track of baby’s diaper to be sure that you always see six or more wet diapers every 24 hours. If you pump after a feeding, it would be normal to see very little Milk pumped out. If you’re pumping in place of a feeding, you should see about 1 to 1 1/2 ounces an hour. If baby is fed, something in a bottle, you should be pumping at least as often as baby eats. When your supply is low, it will take 3 to 5 days to increase your supply. If you’re not pumping or nursing on a regular basis, you’ll usually see your supplies start to drop within a couple of days. In addition to pumping, letting baby be on the breast, as long as often as possible, is best for your supply. Let baby use you like a human pacifier. ❤️
Thank you for this helpful video! My question is how long (suggested minutes) do you suggest for baby to feed? You mentioned keep on one breast for as long as possible, and then let baby suck on the other breast for at least a few seconds. Then let them drink 1 ounce of formula. After that, start on the breast that has the least amount of time, then transfer to the other breast, then give the other ounce of formula. Did I understand correctly? Thanks so much for your help. I really want to be able to only breastfeed if possible and not need to supplement with formula.
Yes, you have that down perfectly. You’ll want baby on the breast as long as they will. So no specific time. On the 1st side until baby is fussy, seems done and comes off the breast or falling asleep. Then the 2nd side. The 2nd side might be just a few seconds but if baby will stay longer, that’s great. When baby seems done, offer 1/2 of their normal formula feed. If they normally have 2 ounces, feed one oz. Then both breasts again. Then the rest of the formula if baby wants. After a few days of this, baby will want less of the 2nd half of the formula, then you can start cutting down that formula that you fed between nursing ❤️ Let baby use you like a human pacifier when possible. How old is baby? How is latching and how much formula is baby taking in?
Thank you! I will try that. Baby is 7 months old but we are not doing solids yet. I just recently found out after doctors visit yesterday that baby lost almost half a pound since the last month’s visit. He’s been very active scooting around very time I put him down during his wake times in the day, and spits up too. I’m guessing he’s been burning off more calories than he’s taking in. Doctor recommended supplementing with formula. I only started today so at first was supplementing with 4 oz a feed but now trying just 2 oz. So far seems like he finished the 4 oz easily and also has been drinking the extra 2 oz easily. His latch has been pretty good I think. doesn’t hurt or feel uncomfortable
@@jeanelleg7542 that’s totally fine that you haven’t started solids yet. Some babies don’t start solids until closer to a year. Breastmilk should be his main source of nutrition before 1 year. Many babies stop in their weight gain, or even lose a little bit during this time. I think that they are just so busy getting around that they don’t eat quite as much. One of my granddaughters went three months without gaining any weight. There’s nothing wrong with adding some formula. That will help to put on some weight but I don’t know if I would give 4 ounces. That’s going to cut down on your supply. Formula it doesn’t digest as quickly as breastmilk, so baby will take longer before they are hungry again. If you are giving a large amount, just be sure that you’re pumping in addition to nursing and add lots of breast massage before and during pumping . I’m not at all anti-formula. I just want to be sure that you have all of the information.❤️ Baby will take more in a bottle because it comes out so easily. It often looks like baby is wanting more of it. If you go back-and-forth in the feeding, (like the video ) baby probably won’t want much of the second half. I don’t want you to ever go against what your doctor tells you. If you want to do something else, be sure to talk with your doctor and work with the doctor and not against them. ❤️ Have you heard of Pace Feeding. It’s a helpful way to bottlefeed your baby so they don’t take in more or less than they need. I’ll link that video here for you.
Thank you for your helpful detailed reply! I lessened the supplemental formula to 2 oz each feeding except for his very early morning feed (which is his dream feed) before he gets up in the morning. Is that amount ok? I’ve noticed he’s been napping about 30 min longer since I’ve been supplementing, meaning might cut out one feed due to not enough time before he goes down for the night. Will that lessen my milk production and should I pump that time instead since he’s not getting the feeding? And thank you, I will be sure to work with my doctor. Also thanks for the paced feeding video. I heard of it before but didn’t know exactly how to apply it until I watched the video you sent.
Hi marycahill, Im doing feeding on demand (breastfeed milk and formula) to my 1.25 month baby. Per day, it will be approx. 7-9 feedings. Im giving 30 to 60 ml formula in the morning/afternoon/evening and 90 ml in the early morning ( 1am and 4am) plus the breastfeeding. An hour every after feeding, i tried to pump 5 minutes for each breast, and would take 1 oz total. Regardless of time, morning afternoon evening, i still get 1 oz. Does this mean i have low milk supply? Can i still do your tip to wean off the formula? What can i do to increase my milk supply?
Is baby feeding from the breast before formula at every feeding? Are you pumping after every feeding from the breast and after every formula feeding? When and why did you start supplementing? What are you doing with that pumped milk? Does milk stop flowing after 5 min of pumping? Do you do lots of breast massage before and during pumping? Getting an ounce after a feeding is excellent! Having baby on and off of the breast several times in a feeding, is the best and fastest way to increase supply. Having baby use you like a human pacifier is excellent for supply. Doing this process you will let baby tell you when they’re full. You can know that baby is getting enough of you always see 6 or more wet diapers every 24 hours.
@@marycahillclc Baby is feeding at both breast then formula. I am pumping an hour after feeding (breast + formula). I started formula a week after I gave birth as my pediatrician advised it as baby is losing much weight (he lost more than 10% from his birth weight). I put my pumped milk on the formula, but it is only 1 oz from both breast. Even in the morning, i still pumped 1 oz. Im doing pumping to increase demand as I think I have low supply :( I will do what you said in the video to give the formula half half, so there is more latching. But apart from this I am doing pumping so to increase the demand. Do you think I can increase my milk supply? I would love to purely breastfeed my baby and remove the formula soon . Pls help 🥺
@@Bicolapt it’s normal for babies that are formula fed to lose up to 7% of their bodyweight and breast-fed babies up to 10% of their bodyweight from 2 to 7. Some babies take up to three weeks to totally regain their birthweight. Many doctors do not understand that breast-feed babies normally lose a little bit more than formula fed babies, but we definitely want to be cautious and not get dehydrated. In the first six days of life baby should have one or more wet diapers for how old they are. So one day old baby should have one or more what diapers a two day old baby should have two or more wet diapers, increases until day six and then on day six and forever forward, baby should always have six or more wet diapers every 24 hours. Also, during this first week baby should be having regular bowel movements. Those can be a small as the size of a US quarter. Their poop will go from black to green to a brown, then two mustard yellow colored that chain should happen over the first week. If those wet diapers happen and babies poop is changing color then we know that they’re getting enough. But sometimes they’re not and it’s necessary to supplement. I would move your pumping to start at 10 to 20 minutes after a nursing session. Pumping closer to the nursing session Will release more hormones, telling your body to make more milk. Waiting an hour could lessen the out put. Can you calculate the total amount of milk that you’re able to pump every 24 hours? At this point, I don’t believe that your supply is as low as you believe it is. I personally do think that you can get your supply up to where baby doesn’t need formula. Pumping 1 ounce after a feeding session is an excellent amount. ❤️

What about using SNS while breastfeeding? My baby started refusing the breast after using bottle for 2 months. He is 15 weeks now and since a week I'm using the sns system from medela and I feel an increase, my breasts were nearly empty, at night feed he swallows loud and sleeps afterwards again so I removed the bottle feeding at night. My boy sucks his lower lip in though and he gets off the breast often so it's hard to get him to latch good. We started supplementing because he was not gaining enough weight and only slept during feeds and I couldn't wake him enough to suck effectively. My milk came in on day 6 and he lost 10% of his birth weight but regained it at day 12, but was constantly on the breast and cried a lot, he slept mostly during feeds and stopped gaining weight completely after 3 weeks from birth... 😢 I really want him to be breastfed exclusively but is it possible to increase supply after 3 months to get a full supply? He drinks about 24 ounces in 24 hrs. I tried to Pump in the beggining (when he was 3 weeks old) and did so for about a week after first few pumping days it was 6 oz daily, than I was getting 10 oz in 5 pump sessions a day after feeds but stopped as I can't stand it mentally to just watch the clock and to have the baby cry while I pump. Can you help me to get him back to breast fully with SNS only?
It sounds like, you have 2 problems. 1, he doesn’t latch well (not at all without the SNS), is that correct. And 2, is that your supply is low. The SNS can help but you still need to get his latch evaluated. If he can’t latch well, he won’t be able to stop using the SNS. If he’s not removing much milk from you but mostly from the SNS, your supply isn’t increasing very fast. If you can, lower the flow of the SNS by lowering the container that the supplement is in. Just hold it low and tip it a bit. If he’s used to it flowering really fast, he won’t be happy with the slow flow of the breast. Did you think that you ever had a good supply?
@@marycahillclc I don't think know if I had a good supply because my milk came in about at day 6. He lost 10% of his weight and was just constantly sleeping at the breast :( But he regained his birth weight by day 12. Between day 5-8 he gained 200 gramm/ 0.44 lbs but the nurse thinks it was a mistake in the scale as afterwards he gained only 0.13 lbs a week. Between day 17-22 he gained only 10 gramm/ 0.02 lbs so nothing... that's when we started supplementing. I started giving him pacifier at day 10 because the nurse said there is no way he is hungry every hour and that he is probably confusing his body signals... and sadly none of them looked that his lower lip is tucked in while breastfeeding. I'm so sad and angry that I didn't get the help from them but just got told by the health visitor that is a lactation consultant that I should give formula but didn't give me tips on how to help my supply. She said I shouldn't feed longer than 20 mins at a feed and than offer formula...
@@marycahillclc and answer to question 1 is yes he will latch but he will scream and be fussy because he has nipple confusion and prefers the bottle sadly but since a week I'm trying to not give the bottle except for when he screams his head off while I try to give him breast with the sns. But in the night he doesn't complain about the breast
@@gabriellakorda7477 it’s very normal for mature breastmilk to come in around 6. Giving his a pacifier means less time on the breast. If you’re not to tired and he will latch, let him use you as a human pacifier. Be sure to offer both breasts each feeding (with or without the SNS). Offer one side as long as possible before changing to the 2nd side. Then give a small amount of the formula, then back to the breast. If he’s still hungry, then go back to the rest of the supplement. When he gets really upset, walk around with him to calm him down before offering the breast. It’s not very easy if he’s really upset.🥰
Hello thank you for your video, my baby is 3 months old, i stopped breast-feeding her cause of sore nipples and then my milk dropped dramatically, i started giving her formula and less breast since to stop breast-feeding her since my supply dropped and she was hungry and now is been a month almost 2 that shes been exclusively formula fed with few breast-feeding attempts. My milk is almost dried up ,I'd like to ask if you believe i can get my supply back with your steps of relactation?
Yes you can but it take a lot of time and consistency though. Were you still having sore nipples the last few times that she was latching? Do you know why you were having pain?
@marycahillclc I believe it was because of my breast pump ,I was pumping 3 times a day cause my breasts were too full ,when I give her breast now there's no pain but very few milk. I tried today pumping with my electric pump but unfortunately there was no suction. I should try with a manual maybe for better suction since my breasts feel flat?
@@ariadnhkati2985 Hand expression can help a lot. Once you get the hang of it, you can get more milk out and it adds more stimulation than the pump. Remember that it takes 3 to 5 days of consistent pumping/nursing to start to see milk then it will slowly increase. So it may be 5 days until you see drops. Will baby latch at the breast? Having baby use you like a human pacifier will greatly increase the needed stimulation to increase supply. If you have no suction, check pump parts. Make sure that hoses are placed correctly and that you have gaskets in place. Look up your particular pump to check that parts are correct and change parts if they are worn out. ❤️

Hi Mary, my baby is 6 months and is feeding both breast milk and formula. I have been trying to wean off formula but have not been successful. Sometimes she refuses to feed at the breast. I feed her at the breast first and then give her formula. She has about 4 oz. She has about 5 to 6 feeds a day. I had to start supplementing when she was born as she was low birth weight and now she is on track with her weight. I had low supply and was on medication. I haven’t been able to pump for sometime now. Is it possible to wean off formula or it is late?
@@archanapatel3632 Yes it is definitely possible but it may take longer and baby must be able to latch at the breast. When she won’t latch, is it usually in the afternoon and evening? Will she latch more when she is sleepy? You can pump to increase your supply but feeding from the breast, the way I describe in this video will be the very best way to increase supply. You can increase supply by pumping, but it will be much slower and take even longer to increase. If you were going to pump, it’s important to pump on a regular basis without skipping a feeding time to pump. And you must add lots and lots of breast massage before and during the pumping. If baby nurses then you give formula after, without re-latching baby during that feeding session, you must also pump afterwards. Anytime, something goes into baby, something should be coming out of you. I wouldn’t worry about pumping if you are able to nurse, give a small amount of formula nurse again and then finish with formula in one feeding. When you start to pump on a regular basis (with at least 10 minutes of breast massage before pumping), it will take 3 to 5 days to start to see an increase. That increase will be small, but if you are consistent, it will gradually, slowly increase.
Oh and… if you believe that, baby doesn’t want to latch at times because the milk is flowing slowly, it would be a good idea to start pace feeding. I’ll link a video for you. This will help baby to get used to drinking from the bottle at a pace that matches breast-feeding. You can also speed up your letdown by applying heat (with some massage) before you latch, baby. Paced Feeding th-cam.com/video/NIDWewaslOQ/w-d-xo.html
You can also pump but if baby latches at the breast well, then this is better than pumping. Letting baby use you as a human pacifier will help to increase supply. If baby isn’t latching well or isn’t latching on a regular basis, then you’ll need to be pumping. Is your baby latching often?
Yes I think he latches well and tries to use me as a human pacifier. He will stay at the breast all day if you allow him to. But I’m not sure if he actually empties my breast completely because he usually falls asleep.
@@marhar5973 The term “emptying the breast” really makes moms think that something is wrong or that they’ll have a supply issue. Breastmilk is made while nursing or pumping. Very little milk is stored in the breast. It may feel like it is because of inflammation but that should fade in a few minutes during or right after nursing or pumping. If baby is latching well and mom is with baby all of the time, there’s often no need to ever pump. ❤️
Hi I am 7 weeks postpartum. I had to supplement for the last two weeks because my sons weight was very behind. He is not catching up quickly. I mainly breastfeed but at work I am pumping 2-3 oz a pump but need to get up to at least 4 oz. Do you think it possible to increase milk production at 7 weeks PP? I heard it hard to increase supply after 6 weeks.
I was pumping every 3 hours at work but I just bought the Elvie stride so I am hoping to increase to every 2 hours this week because it is so easy to put under your shirt
@@atlantic5215 Your pumping output should be about 1 to 1 1/2 ounces per hour. This is an average throughout the day. In the first half of the day it will be much higher and in the second half of the day it will be much lower. It should just average out to that amount. If you’re away at work for eight hours, you should be pumping somewhere between 8 to 12 ounces total. If baby is taking in much more than that, they are likely being overfed. When babies eat from a bottle, the milk comes out much faster than it did from the breast. Babies often don’t realize that they are over full until after they finished eating. When a baby is bottle-fed they should be fed using a Paced Feeding method. When a baby is a overfed, it can cause a few different problems. It can upset babies tummy, baby will be less hungry when mom does get home and that will lower supply, and most moms cannot keep up with pumping that wasted amount. I’ll link a video on Paced Feeding for you. When it comes to hands-free, pumping, it can cause more problems if you’re not adding stimulation. The stimulation that a pump gives, is not the same as baby at the breast, so you must add lots of extra massage before pumping. When moms with a normal supply, start to use a hands free pump they may see extra milk in the beginning but then see a large drop in supply. You can definitely still use the hands-free pump, it will be helpful if it enables you to pump more often, but just be sure to add lots of massage (10 minutes or more) before pumping. ❤️

@@aishwaryaseenivasan4115 If baby isn’t showing signs of needing more, then just feeding from the breast is good. There’s no need to give formula at every feeding. It’s very common for moms to feel like baby isn’t getting enough in the evenings. All moms make less milk in the evenings but that milk is slightly higher in fat. That extra fat but less in volume is what baby needs. Babies are generally fussier in the evening, so it seems like baby is hungry but baby may be tired or having growing pains. Let baby nurse on both sides, as long as possible, then a small amount of formula, then back to both breasts. Then offer the bottle again if baby doesn’t seem content at the breast. There will be times that baby is fussier at night for several days then they seem good again. During those fussy days, it may seem like our supply is low when it’s not. Baby will cluster feed on days that they hurt from growing so quickly or teething. They may want to be at the breast nonstop, so it looks like your supply is low. When baby is hurting, breastmilk and mommy’s arms are comforting. Always keep track of wet diapers. If you see 6 or more wet diapers every 24 hours, you know that baby is getting enough. ❤️
Hey 👋 I’m a mom of 7 that has always exclusively breastfed all my babies and I’ve been nursing for over 13 years straight… i was nursing my 2 year old on demand when I was induced early with my 3 month old who was a 35 weeker and he nursed right away but then was super tired n wouldn’t nurse so I was pumping in the hospital and then he got jaundice and lost more weight so had to stay 2 days in the nicu and started supplimenting. At 5 weeks he was severely constipated and had a uti and stopped supplimenting for a week but he lost a pound so he’s been back on supplimenting a lot ( around 4oz now). I haven’t pumped much cause I only get about 15 ml. I really want to get him off the formula and he’s been taking less the last couple days. Any help is appreciated
Wow! 13 years! That’s awesome! ❤️. Is his weight going up still with the reduction in formula or have you weighed? Being at the breast (on both breast and as long as possible at each feeding) often is the very best way to increase supply. When you go back and forth between bottle and the breast, like in this video will help a lot. Having baby on and off the breast gives lots of stimulation. If you can get to breastmilk in the supplement bottle will help because formula digests slower so baby is full longer and that will make baby nurse less often then that affects supply even more. You have to do whatever helps baby to get those pounds is best. So, work to drop the formula but at the same time don’t drop to soon. It’s very normal for moms after about 8 weeks postpartum to only be able to pump drops if pumping is just random. You can add some mini power pumping sessions to get a little more pumped milk. To do this, you would nurse as long as possible, then massage your breast for 10 minutes, pump for 10, massage for 10 then pump for a 2nd 10 minute session. In the beginning, you’ll see only that small amount but after 3 to 5 days of being VERY consistent, you’ll start to see an increase. It won’t be a huge increase all at once but it will start to go up a bit more from there. When I say “very consistent”, I mean that you have to pick a time of day and do that every day. You might choose to power pump every morning after your 1st or 2nd nurse session. Just keep it close to the same time of day. You could do this in the evening but our volume of milk is always lower in the evening and higher in the morning. Did all of that make sense? You’re doing great! Keep it up! 💕

How old is baby? Was he nursing well but now not? I’m linking my video on Nursing Strike here for you. To get baby to the breast, you’ll want to offer often but don’t unset baby at the breast. If he fusses, stop and offer again later. Spend lots of time skin to skin with baby near your breast while you talk and play with baby. It can take a few days or a few weeks but you can do it. Check this video out and let me know if you have questions ❤️ th-cam.com/video/qU-U0IDMHqY/w-d-xo.html
While you’re working with baby to start latching again, you’ll need to pump with breast massage. Lots and lots of massage. Massage for about 10 minutes before pumping. Applying heat and hand expressing is really helpful too. Pump at least as often as baby eats. It will take 3 to 5 days to start to see an increase. Then it will slowly increase from there. 💕
@@marycahillclc he is 6 weeks. He was nursing ok but gaining weight VERY slowly hence supplementing but i would like to drop thr supplement gradually. He is only breastfed at night as its easier when he's drowsy but during the day he is very fussy. I have been pumping but don't get much output at all maybe 1oz if I'm lucky.
@@missahmed7107 when he was growing very slowly, was his weight percentile dropping? It’s normal to drop in the 1st 2 or 3 weeks but then should start to stay about the same. If a baby’s percentile is low (even at 1% to 10%) that can be fine if it doesn’t drop much more. How many wet diapers was he having? Were you able to check out that video? That will help. Also, your supply is regulating now. So, your body won’t make extra like it did in the 1st few weeks. Whatever is taken out, your body will make more of. 1 to 1.5 ounce an hour is normal. In the first part of the day, you’ll see more than in the afternoon and evening.
@@marycahillclc yes his percentile dropped. He was having 6 wet nappies. Oh no because my supply is regulating does that mean I can't produce more milk at this stage 😢 or will it take longer? Thank you
I’m breastfeeding and giving formula as well, because I don’t have enough milk supply, I have never pumped before, please tell me how should I start pumping to increase my supply, I have one sided pump, if I power pump should I do it for both the breasts, like 10 minutes at right boobie ten minutes rest again 10 minutes right boobie or left?? Please explain and please do a video on how to store pumped milk and explain every bit, thank you! Your videos help a lot ❤
How old is baby? When did you start giving formula? What signs were showing you that your supply was low? The very best, easiest and fastest way to increase supply would be the method in this video. The on and off again at the breast while formula feeding really increases supply. You can power pump doing 10 min on each side. That will take a lot of time with a single sided pump but it can be done. An even better way to power pump would be to nurse baby, then pump once on each breast for 10 minutes. Thank you so much for your response 💕 I’m currently 11 weeks postpartum, I had an emergency c section so we started giving formula right away after my baby was born, and I started breast feeding on day 3, but we kept on giving formula and now I feel my milk supply is getting lower day by day, my baby tries hard to suck the milk out for like 3-5 minutes and then he starts crying and gets fussy, then I give him formula because I don’t want to starve him 🥺 but I really want him to wean him off of formula and breastfeed exclusively. I’ll try the method that you have mentioned in your video and will definitely give you a feedback 💕
@@neen2143 when you pump, how much milk do you get? And about how much milk are you pumping every day? After about 8 weeks, supply will start to drop to just what baby takes out or to the amount that you pump while doing lots of breast massage. When babies get used to a bottle, they can get frustrated at the breast because it’s so much slower and more work. We do want to be sure that baby is getting enough. If baby has lots of wet diapers, you know they’re getting enough. You can also apply heat before nursing (or pumping) this helps to have a letdown sooner. ❤️
Sorry, I just saw your question. Usually I do recommend Paced Feeding with the bottle. If mom is able to do breast, bottle, breast during a feeding, that will be considered “paced” ❤️
Hi there thanks for all your videos I am a mum of six and my baby is nearly 7 weeks old I BF exclusively for four weeks but i started to offer 60 mls of supplement milk after each feed This was due to i only put baby to breast on one side as i couldn’t perfect the latch on my left side due to cracked nipples and sharp pain and stress and anxiety also mastitis twice when i knew i had to put her on the breast it was causing me to cry and my baby was feeling it too. I now feed her on my right breast and hand express my left breast my nipple was flat and to big when drawn (just bought a pump because i thought it would save me time but not getting as much milk with the pump. I always massaged more when hand expressing so i would get 50 mls or more which i would offer baby as soon as it was taken out. I do leave baby on breast for a long time it helps I would like to to back to exclusively BF just need more advice if possible.
Does your left side feel healed now? Are you comfortable trying to latch again? Do you know why that nipple became cracked? Did breastfeeding go well with your other babies?
@@marycahillclc I did all i could to get her to latch good she even would drink beautifully from side occasionally. Yay! She fed well just need to So happy the pain i had was 10/10 i was at my wits end really. My other babies fine i think i have changed physically since then perhaps thats why.i tried different holds etc i am healed now but took weeks because i had blood and lots of damage But what prompted me to get her on today was hearing you say about the saliva on mum. So thank you I will keep at it and see if i can get her off goats milk lol Will let you know and God bless you for answering all the mums on here thank you dear
Should i cut out supplement feeding gradually or slowly please help as i am jot sure ? Shes feeding but fussing at the breast because of milk supply she settles after a minute or two though when i talk to her
Follow the steps that I describe in this video. Offering breast, bottle, breast and bottle all in one feeding ❤️ This way you can be cutting out formula as your supply increases. Every baby is different and every mom with low supply is different.

How many wet diapers does she gave a day? Do you ever pump your breastmilk? If so, how much can you get at a pumping?

@@SamirBoldom Is he having at least 6 wet diapers every 24 hours? Do you only feed breastmilk from the breast? Do you feed formula? Supplements don’t work. To make more milk, baby needs to be at the breast, more often and for as long as possible. At around this age, Moms start to feel like their supply is drying up. There are a few things that may look like low supply, but aren’t. -Your breast will start to feel flat and empty. This is very normal. Your breasts do not store milk, they make milk while baby is nursing or while you are pumping. -Baby may be going through a growth spurt and seems extra hungry or fussy in the evening. During a growth spurt, baby doesn’t want or need more milk, but they want to be on the breast longer. Baby may seem unsatisfied, but they are actually just uncomfortable. It hurts too gross so quickly. You can know that this is the case, if baby seems happy and well during the rest of the day. -After about eight weeks postpartum, our milk supply, adjust down to just what baby needs (What baby is taking out of the breast). If you pumped a few weeks earlier, you would probably see extra milk, but after this time, you may only see drops if you are pumping after a feeding. ❤️
Thanks for the clarification but my son does not have many wet diapers he only has 3or4wet diapers and when i put him on my breast after a short period of time he became upset and moves a lot and cries , and i also hears the sound of hunger coming from his stomach
It’s definitely possible. I joined a breastfeeding group on Facebook and it’s amazing the support you get from the group. No shame for using formula either. My other children were formula fed. My baby is 1 month old today and I’ve been nursing and bottle feeding breast milk bc she wasn’t gaining weight good at the beginning so the pediatrician recommend bottle feeding breast milk. Now that she has gained I wanted to exclusively nurse her and she has been doing great. It can take some work bc they can get used to the bottle but with patience you can do it!!! Maybe try some weighted feeds as that will give you peace of mind !

Thank you for this content. This was very comforting. 1) to know that it will take days and you will not see results overnight. 2) to know that baby feeding for longggg periods of time/getting fussy is normal. I was starting to think something was wrong with her suction because I was certain my supply was somewhat sufficient.

If you’re seeing lots of wet diapers, that lets you know that she’s getting enough.❤️
How old is she?
@@marycahillclc she is one month old. I recently started supplementing more formula because the wet diapers weren’t enough
If baby is having 6 or more wet diapers, every 24 hours, you know that she is getting enough. if she is refusing a bottle, that’s OK if you are available to breastfeed her. That does get a little stressful if you need to be away from her. If you do need to give a bottle, she may take pumped breastmilk better than formula. She may not take a bottle if you are around. Sometimes, you may need to totally leave the house and sometimes baby won’t even take the bottle from your partner. (because they know the boob is nearby)
Have you started solids?

That’s so exciting that baby is latching now🥰.
I can’t thank you enough! This was so validating 💗

Keep at it mommy ❤️ it may take a week or so to wean off but you can do it. The amount of milk you can pump is not a good indicator as to how much milk you have. Before starting formula, how many wet diapers was baby having a day?

Baby is 6 weeks old and still combi feeding, I've been pumping in-between but he is always hungry after a breast and still has a full bottle after breastfeeding and it makes me feel useless.
Swapping breasts and giving half a bottle is such a good idea. I'll be trying this tonight.
Thank you all the way from the UK.
You can do this mommy! ❤️
Often baby is fussy and just needs to burp after a feeding.
I'm so happy
You're so right about slowing things down and allowing him to realise he is full. I definitely wasn't doing this before

Baby’s tummy is sometimes bigger after formula because baby takes in more than breastfeeding. Bottles let the milk or formula flow fast so baby’s often don’t realize they are full and over eat. It won’t harm baby to overeat but some get a tummy ache later. Our bellies get big when we overeat too. (It can be uncomfortable for us, and it makes us sleepy too)
When we breastfeed, we know baby has had enough when they come off the breast.

Hi mommy! Your situation is very different if you have a Forceful letdown/ Oversupply. When you have this condition, the steps to breastfeeding are very very different.
It’s common for babies to loose weight and has upset tummies if mom’s condition isn’t under control.
This is a 3 part video series to explain it better. Please check it out. You may need to rewatch it because it’s so totally different.

Hi! I just discovered your TH-cam chanel, and have watch soo many of your videos! It’s so easy to understand, and you cover about everything! I’ve learned so much from you, thank you❤️
There is something I need help with.
* I apologise for the long comment, I really tried to make it shorter!😅
I like long comments. It help when I have more details. 🥰
Some babies do cluster feed a lot. Often babies have big growth spurts where they cluster feed HARD for a week or two (maybe linger) it is so tiring. 😴
When babies cluster feed, they don’t need or want more milk.
Are you nursing on both breast each feeding? Especially in the evenings?
@@marycahillclc Oh! I thought that every time baby shows hunger cues (opens mouth, searches for breast etc), it means that he is hungry. It’s good to know that’s not the case!
I’m so relieved the problem is not that I have “ruined” my milk supply by giving formula the first three weeks. I have heard that the first three weeks is so important to establish the right amount of milk, so I was a little worried about this- that it was “too late”. Thank you🙏🏼
When my baby cluster feeds, he sucks on one side about 10 mins, then falls happily asleep.
It’s important that neither of you get stressed. Baby will first start to latch when sleepy. Here’s that link

The next video is to help you to get your supply up. It’s not an overnight fix but with consistency, you’ll start to see an increase. What makes more milk is moving milk often and stimulation. You’ll need to do lots and lots of breast massage before and during pumping. You’ll need to be pumping as often as baby eats.
Here’s that video

How to Keep Baby Awake while Nursing

Thank you momma,I learnt something new now.
My breastis not flowing well with much milk i have drank enough white wine etc but no much change.
We are just 5 weeks and my baby has finished 4 tins of 400g formula.
He will suck but always crying that means he's not getting enough. But once you give him 120ml of feeder he will rush it within 2 seconds.
I will soon start work on July and I also want my breast milk to be flowing well so that I can be able to pump out milk.
Sorry for the long post and reply me momma thank you.
I like long posts, that helps me to better understand what’s happening ❤️
When did you start formula?
@@marycahillclc Thank you so much mummy for your teachings, iam satisfied, relived and comfort with your reponses.i really appreciate it and God bless you real good.

@@marycahillclc fantastic. I'll incorporate this. Thanks Mary
Finally, sometimes I pump as soon as I have time but then he wakes up shortly thereafter and I feel like my breasts are too empty for him, which makes me unsure about pumping itself…
In other words:
- what to do when an otherwise v awake baby falls asleep at breast / plays w it instead of eating (while eats consistently from bottle)
- how to introduce pumping in such a way that is not damaging to the breastfeeding session?
@@marycahillclc Thanks for the tips, I will give it a try! 🤍

This video actually answered all of my questions 🥹 thank you 🙏🏼
Thanks for all the info .
What if the baby doesn’t get full tho and keeps waking up every 2 hrs!?????

I’m so sorry that you’re had a rough start. Are you on a blood pressure medication? BP medication is often given safely to breastfeeding mothers. 🤔
To keep your supply up, be sure to pump every 2 to 3 hours and add LOTS of breast massage before and during pumping.

Hello my baby is 5 months. At month 1 and two breast milk was fine, but i stated giving formula when 2 months and my milk supply went down. Bbay was fussing to not be on breast . So i dont give breast anymore just formula. I dont feel my milk let down anymore. I want to be able to breast feed again. I was under a lot of stress. Trying to control stress now. How can i bring back milk and milk let down? And cause baby to suck on breast.
I’m so sorry mommy! Breastfeeding can be very stressful at times. 😢 I’ll link a couple of videos here to help.
To get baby back to the breast, you must be very consistent. You must offer the breast every feeding, but stop as soon as baby starts to fuss. Baby needs to get comfortable with the breast again.

Because baby is not latching right now, you’ll need to be pumping to increase your supply. Once baby starts to latch on a regular basis, then latching will increase supply even better than pumping. If baby doesn’t latch again, you can be an exclusive pumper. It is a lot of work to pump , so you have to decide if that’s something you want to do.
I want to support you in getting your supply back up, but I also want you to know that the benefits of breastmilk that baby got in those first weeks and months will stay with baby for the rest of their lives. ❤️
Pumping Moms With Low Milk Supply

Hi mary!
My baby is 15 days old, since i had latching issues, sore cracked nipples. I had to supplement her with a lil formula as i was in excruciating pain. Now pumping about 40ml from both breast together. Along with putting her on the breast as and when she wants to be fed but still shows hunger cues all the time.
Formula has uped as i feel im not making enough? What do you feel am doing wrong.
Hi mommy!
Are you able feed at the breast with out pain now?
Are you feeding her on both breasts each feeding?
Have you been feeding like I describe in this video? (Breast, formula, breast all in a feeding)
Is baby’s fussy time, mostly in the afternoon and evening, or is it all day?
Any tip for nipple confusion? 😢
@@ug8179 yes! I’ll link my video here on Nursing strike. Tell me more about what’s happening. I like lots of details 👍
How Do I Get My Baby Through a Nursing Strike?
th-cam.com/video/qU-U0IDMHqY/w-d-xo.html
What kind of pump do you have?
thank you! was looking for an actual game plan of order of boobs and formula
After feeding her I only pump 1-2oz
@@superstarcozzy at this age, most moms will only see a few drops of milk pumped after a feeding, unless she is pumping on a regular basis after each feeding. If you can see 1 to 2 ounces after a feeding, that can be a sign of a forceful letdown/over supply. Here’s my three part video series on the condition. the first video will just help you to determine if you may have this condition. Mom’s often believe that they have a low supply when they actually have an over supply. Mom’s with an over supply, that is not under control can have slightly less fat their milk. This leads to lower weight gain.
I’m not completely sure if that’s what’s going on in your situation right now but check out these videos and let me know what you think.

How exciting that you’re starting to breastfeed ❤️
You can wean off of formula if you are able to produce enough breastmilk.
Can you give me a little more details? How many mls/ounces are you able to pump? How much are you giving in a bottle? How many wet diapers is baby having?
The more details that you can give me, the better.
Do you have any advice for when baby is falling asleep at the breast almost immediately, and therefore disrupting the weaning system?

How old is baby?
it is often harder to keep a newborn awake for feedings. If baby is under 1 months or is low in weight, you will need to take baby out of the wrap and undress them if necessary for several feedings during the day. After 1 month and normal weight (for that baby), you can usually rely on them waking up when they’re hungry. If baby falls asleep but still latched, they are usually still getting some breastmilk. You can be sure that they are getting enough, if you always see plenty of wet diapers.

Only you can decide if you’re able to pump and nurse that often. Even just a small amount of breastmilk for a few weeks, along with formula is beneficial to baby. Be sure that you enjoy this time with your baby. ❤️

Are you working to increase supply and wean off of formula?

@@archer1991 That’s common advice to do 15 minutes one side then 15 minutes on the other side but that’s really bad advice. Doing that, gives baby less fat.

What signs are you seeing that show your supply is low when you go back to feeding from the breast?
After a few days of this, baby will want less of the 2nd half of the formula, then you can start cutting down that formula that you fed between nursing ❤️
Let baby use you like a human pacifier when possible.
I just want to be sure that you have all of the information.❤️
Baby will take more in a bottle because it comes out so easily.
Have you heard of Pace Feeding.

Hi marycahill,
Im doing feeding on demand (breastfeed milk and formula) to my 1.25 month baby.

@@marycahillclc baby usually doesn’t latch in the evening and will calm down after having a bottle
@@marycahillclc she latches when she is sleepy and ends up sleeping and I let her continue to dream feed.
Do we do this in addition to pumping?
Yes, you can definitely still increase your supply. How many hours are you at work and how often do you pump at work?

Keep it up! 💕

What signs were showing you that your supply was low?
The very best, easiest and fastest way to increase supply would be the method in this video. The on and off again at the breast while formula feeding really increases supply.

Right now we are facing nipple confussion, baby more prefer to breast but start crying and even when we give bottle she dn't want to latch,(we use to give her while she's sleeping) never wide open her mouth when breast feed and weak sucking to remove milk in order to get enough milk. she seem hungry all the time,I dn't know what is the exact reason? I think that I made a mistake right from the beginning (latching) . I started pumping again when I saw this vid.(today is the 7th day) but can't pump exclusively
I have little milk in my breasts despite taking supplements.I dont know the reason is .please help me because my child is 2month and 1 weak
Hi mommy! What signs are showing you that your supply is low?
@@marycahillclc there are many signs ,the diapers are few, when i pump i find less than 30 ml my son cries a lot after feedig
@@SamirBoldom
Is he having at least 6 wet diapers every 24 hours?
@@SamirBoldom yes, baby isn’t getting enough if diapers are that low.
Did this just start to happen?
Does baby get formula or pumped milk?
Hi.. i am a first time mom and 1 week post CS. The baby was first given bottle feeding during our hospitalization, at home I really want to start breastfeeding but my baby is not latching at all, ill put my nipple in his mouth then he will forcefully push his body against mine, I even tried giving my pumped milk thru bottle but he’s spitting it out.
