I'm a normie and this last season HURT. What was so amazing about GOT is how invested I, as a normie, became in the amazing world and characters. They felt like people I knew. Yes I loved some of the spectacle but what made the spectacle amazing is the character development that happened beforehand. The spectacle had meaning and real consequences. It wasn't just bells and whistles. I had really enjoyed rewatching seasons and specific episodes because they touched me. But season 8, specifically the party after the end of the Night King and the final episode left me with such a bad taste in my mouth, that it's hard for me to watch any of it anymore. Kinda like when you find out someone you love is just a superficial user... that you were moved by their suave ways and have only now come to find out it was all a mask.
I LOATHE how they treated the Arya and Gendry arc. They made Gendry into some pathetic nice guy. And then just stopped with him... bringing him back to wear a suit and not even getting a fucking line to say in the last episode. He was a side character but an amazing one. His relationship with Arya was nuanced. He wasn't just friendzoned... he was completely ignored. Just not believable at all and really, an insult to anyone that had invested any emotion into him as a character.
I LOATHE how they wrote Bran. What a boring piece of shit do nothing when he could have been so amazing... they could have gone ANYWHERE with him and they chose to make him a shell. And then had the gall to try to convince us he had such a great story. To tell us without showing us. That we should just accept that and to be patronizing enough to ask the amazing actor Peter Dinklage to sell it. What an injustice to him and waste of his acting talent.
I LOATHE how they made Jon into an emasculated side character.
I LOATHE how they dumbed down Tyrion. He made mistakes. And I was hoping he'd learned from them and come back an even stronger player because that's what would have happened. Instead he is just a mistake machine. It doesn't humanize him. It makes him a caricature.
I LOATHE how they rushed through time and distance. What made the entire greatness of the Arya and the Hound relationship, for instance, is that we got to travel with them... through landscapes, meet people on the way, see how they react to each other and situations that arose.
I LOATHE that I can't go back and watch one of my favorite episodes of the whole series, the episode of interactions before the battle with the Night King, because all that happened afterward makes those interactions seem fake and hollow in retrospect.
I could go on. I could really write at least 10 more separate things I loathe. Like the how all the Dothraki and Unsullied instantly re-spawned out of nowhere. How completely patronizing and insulting that is. Anyway, I could go on and on. You know. We all can. It makes liking any bit of it feel spoiled like good food gone bad. Like having once liked tequila, but now that it's made me puke, I can't even think of it without cringing.
It's all so sad and stupid.

And the best response award goes to.... LOL. Yeah you said a mouthful, yet not enough. I agree with everything except the Gendry Arya part. Couldn't care about shipping those two together. I cared more about how all of a sudden she couldn't use her face changing anymore. Or Decided to be an in your face kind of fighter instead of a true 'assassin'
The north - now with the largest kingdom, but smallest army, could use an 'assassin'. Yet Arya gets on a boat to sail uncharted seas.
What about all the talk about the lone wolf dies alone, but the 'pack survives'??? Where did all that go? Guess it was ignored with the rest of everything else in order to get the rushed ending!
Truly... GOT season 8 made every season before it Irrelevant. Because Nothing MATTERED!!!! Jon's blood line, Dany's Curse, Brans power and purpose in gettting them for whats to come. Arya faceless training. The magic and purpose of combinging stark and targaryen blood...Etc etc etc. NOTHING MATTERED!!!!

I sympathize with your pain and I certainly felt the characters were real up until season 8 but
      1) Arya and Gendry were never going to e a couple. Get over that.
      2) Jon wasn't emasulated, though it may seem like that, he was in love.
      3) Tyrion has gotten dumb and dumber, but that is directly based on the writing getting dumb and dumber
      4) hound and Arya is more like mentor and protege and it continued
      Ending is still horrible though...

Perhaps in a few years the biggest disappointment will have settled down a bit and we can watch the first 4, PERHAPS 5 seasons again. (Maybe 6 for certain specific scenes, but most likely we'll stop after that.)
However, the way things feel now I really doubt we'll be watching those first good seasons any time soon.

"I can't even bear to watch episodes of the good seasons knowing how it all turns out."
That begs the question : "What exactly do you want anyway?". Do you want mindless escape'ism or do you want meaningful fulfillment? Pick 1, you can't have both by definition.
You see, I think you have been tricked into thinking that GoT is meaningful while it obviously is mindless escape'ism. Now that everybody is finding this out, it somehow is a shock to them why the ending isn't satisfying. It was a gimmick.
Also it was a gimmick employed by GRRM. I could have told you the ending would be flaccid from the first half o book one. I think the show runners realized this and just wanted to get out of this endless torrent of prolix that actually leads nowhere.
IF GRRM ever publishes the end, which I doubt, it will be equally underwhelming.

Jamie: Hate Cercei, like Brienne more!.......Wait, don't like Brienne as much anymore, love Cercei!!
Greyworm: Jon murdered our queen, Tyrion betrayed our queen, they must be punished!!...... Tyrion becomes hand of the king and Jon goes to the wall?? OK...fine with me! I'll just sail away now!!
Sansa: The North fought to never have to bend the knee to anyone ever again! I'll be Queen in the North, and they'll have to bend the knee to me!!

I miss Jorah. He would have reigned Dany back to reality. So many characters destroyed all for the sake of “ending the series”.
So much of the story is destroyed. George was right. Could have gone 10 seasons with some very clever writing, writing that had respected the characters and their arcs. Let the characters tell the story, what they do and say. Don’t drive the characters to an ending, that isn’t the way to tell a story.
D&D are hacks who will destroy Star Wars worse than it is now. Just look at what they did to GoT.

Bran’s story wasn’t great, it wasn’t even good. It had the potential to be great but it turned out pretty much meaningless in end. He handicapped Hodor just so he could save his own skin, he treated Meera like a piece of crap after all she did for him. He could have saved Theon had he told Theon to get behind him. He wound up being an emotionless robot in the end, and got crowned king for it. Just stupid and lazy writing.

    • @hjrosas071

Bran had THE best story! He was just masterfully manipulating everything around him from the background. He gave Arya the knife, which suggests he can tell the future or at least put people in place to do his bidding. Told Jon his parentage, which all it did was create division between Dany and Jon, which was a factor in her becoming mad. Then he allowed Dany to massacre millions at King’s Landing, but didn’t tell Jon so he could stop her.
Bran is the best written villain ever. So well written, and so well portrayed on screen that no one yet has even realized that Bran was the bad guy all along.
What did he say when asked to rule even though he “didn’t want it”?
“Why do you think I came all this way?”

Bran has a long journey left in the books. In the books, his story is quite complex and dwell deep into prophecy and dreams. GRRM has said that bran chapters are the most difficult to write. The only 'mistake' HBO made was trusting that D&D knew what they were doing. And even then they had no reason to think they didn't for six and a half years. Even as someone who wasn't taken with the series, and yes I did watch more that a handful of episodes, I am more than happy enough to say that the early seasons were high quality.
Nor were HBO 'done' with the show or uncaring about it. You don't start developing three other series based on the same IP (one of which is filming) if you have no interest in it. Like the Star Wars and Star Trek franchises HBO will have made FAR more money from merchandise than from anything else. They will be very well aware of what happened to the Star Wars franchise in that regard when customers disliked what they were offered.

I realize that the first few seasons when there was source material were adapted well but wasn't there any oversight on these final two seasons? Didn't anyone watch this and think, "Oh shit, this is bad"? Had they just spent too much money by the time they realized how bad it was and thought there might be some backlash but it'll blow over? I'm also sad that because this went so badly that now they are really backing up on the prequels only committing to seeing how this first one does.

HBO didn't blow anything. HBO basically gave the writers a blank cheque to go on for years. Imagine that, nigh infinite time and money to finish a show that has already been the most popular thing that has ever been on TV, EVER! But dumb&dumber wanted to work another more prestigious project so they rushed it into an early grave (and at the rate they're going they're prolly gonna kill off what's left of the ding star wars franchise). There would be spin offs, there would be merchandise...Kid wanting to be dragon riders, knight or Dorthraki, toys with every friggin happy meal, waiting lines for the first cinema release, cups, bags, posters even that iron throne toilet that would let you rule the bathroom....HBO could have reeled in literal BILLIONS of profits for decades to come hadn't these clowns fucked it up...
G.R..R.Martin has written so much lore on this fantasy world, HBO could easily have made another 70 episodes of different legends and historical tales without touching the main story line. You REALLY think HBO would let that get taken from them for quick profit? I'm not a marketeer, but even an idiot could see the potential in that.

I disagree with the simplistic idea that the ending was "rushed". They had 12 hours to set up Daenerys's turn and they didn't bother outside of her burning the Tarlys last season. Last season she was refusing to take King's Landing by force, outright ignoring her allies' advise to end the war quickly and decisively (a decision that killed those allies). She agreed to the insane plan to get a zombie to show to Cersei. She left King's Landing alone to go fight in the north. This season, she tried to make friends with Sansa and it was SANSA who was intractable. She had her father's murderer in front of her and she simply pardoned him. She chose to restore House Baratheon, the house of the usurper king. She again agreed to Tyrion's plan of siege over attack. Even after her dragon and friend were killed, she still waited a couple weeks to attack.
The problem wasn't that the ending was rushed. There was plenty of time if they'd bothered to actually prepare for the ending. But, baffingly, they just had her go right on being the Dany we know almost until the moment that she went YOLO and torched King's Landing after it surrendered. To give any credence to the show not having enough time gives these writers too much credit. They just completely forgot to do anything to lead into the heel turn. That level of incompetence should not be let off the hook.

She knew her father was a nutjob that's why she spared Jamie and she didn't try to make friends with Sansa at all. And, she only empowered Gendry because she knew she could control him.
The show certainly was rushed. There should have been 20 episodes for the last 2 seasons not only 13. Even though, S8 had 2 hours episodes it contained a lot of filler. Apart from the story being rushed, a lot of what they wrote was nonsensical; their only concern was driving the plot forward not the characters and how they would behave in certain situations.

    • @GonzoTehGreat
      @GonzoTehGreat 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

It was rushed because they didn't give themselves enough time to get the characters to where they needed to be via a convincing and consistent narrative, but also because they squandered the limited time they did have on visual callbacks to earlier scenes. The Tyrion bit about ’the importance of stories’ was clearly self-referential to Benioff and Weiss. It was an example of their own egotistical sense of self-importance. They are the real Tyrants of the Tale.
They projected their own subconcious self-perception - which is one of unworthiness and abuse of power - onto Daenerys’s character out of their own subconscious guilt. And they themselves, in real life, maintain that same delusional and exaggerated self-regard that she had at the end.
Ultimately, Benioff said it himself, “A good story is not a good story if you have a bad ending.” Their ending with the Game of Thrones franchise is similar to Dany’s ending, which they’ve been mirroring for some time.

Oh, my sweet summer child, what do you know about disappointment? Disappointment is for the short night, when Jon did nothing and Arya fell a hundred feet from nowhere. Disappointment is for the characters, whose arcs are built up for years only to be instantly regressed and plot lines are born and live and die all in nothingness. That is the time for disappointment, my queen, when the White Walkers never make it past Winterfell.
Thousands of years ago, there came lazy writers that destroyed an entire series. Fans raged about no set up, payoff or logic, same as the cast members in their interviews. And parents smothered their Khaleesis rather than see them watch Season 8, and wept and felt the tears of disappointment on their cheeks.
In that darkness, the Show Runners came for the last time. They rushed through season 8 without care, leaving coffee cups and water bottles, riding off to Star Wars to “subvert more expectations”.

Apparently Kit Harrington and Sophie Turner have gone off at fans on their social media accounts, saying they are "disrespectful" for their opinions. So the fan blaming by the actors has begun now it seems. Harrington did not take long to do his 180 after saying he found the final season to be a disappointment. I awaited S7 with both trepidation and hope but it started slowly, dragged for 3 episodes then deteriorated quickly with E6 being the worst. S8 is almost exactly the same, which isn't surprising when you consider they were both initially intended to be a single long final season.

I believe it was Andre's reporting that revealed D&D were fixated on a seven season run years back - and I can see a justification for that. Genre shows tend to start to flame out at five to seven seasons, so you kill a show at its height and are immortal forever. The problem is that they faithfully finished off Martin's material at a slow-walk pace through season 6 and then wrapped up in one 13 episode extended length final season. All of the main end notes - Mad Queen Dany, Jon exiled, Starks everywhere and King Bran - could have been achieved in the number of episodes produced. But to do that, D&D would have needed to start more aggressively pruning Martin's material and developing end themes in season 4 at latest. They didn't. They tried to shove all end theme development and payoff into one 13 episode extended final season; then they did a song and dance and called one season two. It wasn't enough. The Screen Rant Pitch Meeting is viciously accurate:
HBO Executive Guy: "There seem to be a lot of plot threads for just 13 episodes."
Script Writer Guy: "So many details to resolve, so little time."
HBO Executive Guy: "Time? We can give you more time. How about 4 more seasons?"
Script Writer Guy: "No! There's NO MORE TIME!"
HBO Executive Guy: "Well okay then."

The ending could’ve been so good if D&D had taken the opportunity to have more seasons, and then it wouldn’t have been so rushed then. They could’ve developed Dany and made her mental state deteriorate over several seasons, making her fall to Mad Queen make sense. They could’ve spread out the fight against the Night King and his army over several episodes, making him a more formidable villain. This series started with the threat of the wights, and they were defeated so easily. They could’ve had Cersei actually do something instead of staring out of a window, and then given her (and Jaime) a better death than being killed by bricks.
The ending they gave us would’ve made sense and been satisfying if it hadn’t been rushed, just like you said.

Only to have that same angry, vengeful, blood thirsty soldier all of the sudden take the man who murdered his queen (the only person he swore to protect and serve) as a PRISONER which the writers had already established they weren’t doing in that very same episode.
That is inconsistent and contradictory to the narrative that the writers had already established.

A very deep and lucid analysis, thank you. I understood from the very beginning that we all would have been disappointed when I knew that the final seasons would have been the shortest: 6 episodes! As you said, Danaerys' madness, Jon's fate, Bran,'s fate etc would ha been acceptable if made not in this hasty and inaccurate way. Some of my personal observations: 1) is it possible that the fate of Jon (King in the north, hero and legend, rightful heir to the iron throne and finally brother of the new King) is actually decided by Grey Worm, a former slave and simply a soldier who can now make decisions by his own and bargain with the King and Lords of Westeros? 2) Is it possibile that nobody, anymore, mention the true identity of Jon? In the last (ridiculous) summit, at least 5 persons (Bran, Sansa, Arya, Tyrion and Sam) know who Jon is...they all remain silent even now that Danaerys is dead? 3) The Dothrakys were completely destroyed in the battle with the army of deads, and the unsullied reduced to a few hundreds (confirmed also on the beginning of the siege of King's landing, where you can actually see a small army...) , and in the last episode, when Danaerys speaks to them, they are again thousands and thousands??? 4) How can they rebuild the city and the red palace so fast, after that everything was reduced to ashes? Or should we think that some years passed with Jon Snow kept in jail for years? And many other questions....but rush has always been a bad advisor......

As someone who never watched this show, I thank you for this. I was curious as to what was so wrong about the finale, as so many people danced around it. This, with no prior knowledge of the series, helped me to see so. That said, at no point did I disparage the fans of it, as I know how it feels to have a crappy ending tacked onto your genre fiction, heck as my own list goes, I started early with that, anyone here old enough to remember KA Applegate's writing? Animorphs and Everworld both ended similarly...heck Everworld just stops, it's not really an ending, the kids there just started winning, so series canceled.
Still, it really is impossible not to notice how differently this backlash is being treated by the media, and it's easy to see why. This series was a phenomenon, it swept audiences up in its story and characters who would never have normally cared about it, thanks to both the grounding of the story in a real world sense(Magic existed, but it was not a major factor in the world), and some damn fine actors. Even as someone who knows nothing else about it, I know that much.
These media outlets don't have to care about the 'geek' circles being pissed at them, as they get their hits elsewhere, but if they did the same here, they'd find themselves quickly with o one watching. It also probably helps that they themselves were likely avid consumers of it, rather than from the outside looking in, as they are with other franchises.

Ultimately, there’s no use complaining about whether or not you liked or hated the ending of Game of Thrones, cause this is the ending that George RR Martin told D&D, meaning that it’s the definitive and final ending of the series as a whole. George RR Martin has gone on record many times saying that his ending will be practically the same as D&D’s ending and that the only real changes will come from the storylines involving the characters that didn’t make it into the show, such as Arianne Martell, Coldhands, And Lady Stoneheart.

And I think it showed she had that in her all along... go back and watch how she burns down the Dothraki Temple... how she stakes the 'masters' to the cross... how she envisions doing worse time and again, only to be talked out of such actions by her advisors. And when her advisors were gone, or failed her and she no longer trusted them... she became the worst she could become, it was in her all along.

In my humble eyes, the problem happens to be when a show soul is shifted to reach new audiences, losing in the way what made it great in the first place. If your favourite show gets too popular, panic.

Nothing will happen with Star Wars. They’ll write it, will smash box office records. People will complain. Rinse. Repeat.

Marvelous description of what was absolutely horrendous. At last I can laugh at least a bit, while I wait forever for George. Thank you so much.

And frankly who cares what they do to Star Wars? That franchise has already been nuked by Ruin Johnson and JJ Abrams; D&D will just make the rubble bounce.

i guess, in the Future you don't get Blacklisted, you Blacklist yourself -- these writers are burning the investors cash right before their eyes.

Benioff & Weiss have become the most hated showrunners in history due to their selfishness after what has happened, considering how universally loved they were prior to this rush of an ending. And it is NOT that the story is bad, it's just the way it came about through a rush to end it, so I ABSOLUTELY agree with showing Dany's decline into narcissism and paranoia more obviously over a period of time, instead of with a single episode (yeah yah, we have seen hints of it in the past, but nothing so drastic).

When the bad guy from "No Country For Old Men" makes a youtube video about how bad season 8 is, that is cause for serious concern.

The Media are backing the criticism because one of their precious feminist icons got ruined - had Dany been a man they would be giving GoT fans the same treatment as Star Wars fans.

I think it would be more interesting if John Snow became mad instead of Daenerys. After all he is a Targaryen.

Dumb and Dumber should be fired from Star Wars and not allowed anywhere near another TV series. They should then be banished up North beyond the Wall and not allowed to marry or have children or be involved with any other media project.
