The worst part is that they weren't even running out of time. HBO wanted to give them more seasons, more episodes, more everything. The producers just wanted out so that they could get their Star Wars deal. And they messed everything up in order to go get that sweet Disney money.
I haven't heard about the Star Wars deal, but I definitely know that HBO would have happily continued the show. It's garnered more viewers with each season, making them more and more money, and with them starting a handful of spin-off series, you know HBO would have gone to season 20 if they could have.
@@daniel_netzel it's apparently going to be a trilogy. I'm sort of hoping they get fired after Kathleen Kennedy hears about the backlash from the fans about this season.

@Spanish Moustache the MCU is probably the only other series, TV or film, on par with GOT. So yeah that would make sense, otherwise it was just foolish on the part of that actor. Hindsight is 20/20, as they say..
The show went from me being angry at the characters for their decisions to me being angry at the writers at their decisions. Best character arc of all time.
Omg so true. It started with escalating fandom wars over the dumb and irrational decisions of the characters and then it hit me - the writing was far more stupid than even the previous seasons lol.
@@sebee555 I think good writing, or just good art, is exactly when that happens, when it splits crowds and opinions and people lose their minds trying to argue if it's great or nonsense. More than half of viewers still like S8, the writing isn't bad, you just don't like it.
It was ridiculous. There were a couple times where he was overwhelmed/covered by the dead and he miraculously didn't die. The entire battle with the Knight King was a complete joke.

They broke the number one rule of writing, "Show don't Tell." Instead of showing us how these characters are "smart" or "mad". They just have moments where literally other characters have to tell us "tyrion is smart" or "sansa is the smartest person I know". It just comes out stupid and repetitive. And don't get me started on all of the call back in the dialogue, its like they're trying to remind us of how great the show use to be.
I don't see enough people pointing this out honestly. This is one of my biggest issues. I didn't have to have someone tell me Tyrion was smart in Seasons 1-4 I could tell based off his dialogue and actions. I didn't have to have someone tell me that Shae and Tyrion were in love, I could tell by how they treated each other. But now characters keep saying "Sansa/Tyrion are so smart," but I want to SEE them make smart decisions not be told it. And the one I really hate is how people keep saying "Jon and Dany are so in love" SHOW me and stop telling me.

Not considering Rian Johnson already ruined Star Wars, Dumb and Dumber wont do it anymore. They got kicked out of disney because they signed a multi million dollar contract with netflix which would have interfered with the making of the saga from them. Finally a somewhat good news around those two guys.
Exactly, you haven't been paying attention since the start of season 6. The writing has been circling the toilet bowl since then, there was always so many more episodes to go that people ignored it. Now its finally going down the drain and people are acknowledging it. I think the hate is coming on so strong because people have let so much slide over the past few seasons and were willing to forgive bad writing in the past as long as they could make an ending work. This is what happens when people suffer bad writing for 2 seasons, the show runners think its great because people want to like it and will turn their brains off to praise when they should be critical.
I really loved the master strategy they put forth of the Dothraki YOLO charge. Who would have though that the Dothraki couldn't defeat the greatest threat Westeros had ever seen on their own? Game of thrones isnt about big cinematic visuals it's about the stories and the characters. DandD totally missed what made GOT great. They are not fans and it shows.
Right? I've always kinda thought GoT the series was a bit overrated, because the thing that makes it so great is the writing, and if you want the writing you can also just read the books. Now that they cant follow the books anymore it's just really showing that this show was all about the story and almost no one actually cares how big the battles are (look at season 1, where they dont have the money for a big battle scene, yet it wouldnt even be fair to compare it to this season)
Wouldn't it be the best shock value if Disney pulled the rug out from under them, because of how badly they've handled this season of GoT? That's a huge way for Disney to regain a LOT of respect from fans, but I seriously doubt they'll take advantage of the opportunity...
That's exactly why they did GOT so dirty. They wanted to get it over with so they could drop it on its head and kill it already, and they did exactly that with episode 5
Sam Loomis how do you know the actors didn’t wanna move on to other projects. Emilia Clarke and Sophie turner are becoming much bigger stars. Can you blame them if they want to expand their horizons
Everything about the writing of season 8 was sub par. Character development, plot points, foreshadowing, prophecy, common sense. It was incomprehensible how they ruined it so completely. They couldn't have done a more thorough job if they tried. I have never witnessed such a complete and utter failure.
No. HBO offered them 10 seasons with 10 episodes each around season 4. Around season 5-6 those two went to Lucas Films to propose a Star Wars trilogy. Around the ending of season 6 they announced there would be only 8 seasons. Last year they announced that their next project would be Star Wars trilogy and the CEO claimed to have been contacted awhile ago by them two. They killed the show *Point BLANK* Just another way on how corporate greed fucks you. They took your escape from reality and took a fat shit on it.
The hilarious part is their plan backfired on them. They cut season 8 short in episodes and quality so they can quickly get onto Star Wars. Little did they know that they'd be fired from that Star Wars deal BECAUSE of all that season 8 backlash lmao.
HAHAHA It makes me laugh when I remember aaaaaall these videos presenting hundreds of theories on eveything, trying to explain all the game of thrones mysteries, these mysteries that would be answered in season 8 aaaaaaand NO. Just Arya teleporting, Jamie fighting Euron, Daenerys becoming insane in a split second and characters sitting around Winterfell.
Regardless how rushed and badly written build ups season 8 is, we should never pin that on the actors/directors/set design team/music composer/CGI team. They all did an amazing job!
That's what makes this all so tragic. Everything other than the writing makes me want to like it, but I just can't. Like, I want to keep watching episode 3 because the battle looks so cool (just so long as I ignore logic) but the taste it leaves is awful. Watching the NK die was more tragic than like any other GoT death... and he's the villain (or was he?)... @fred's long, hard, throbbing ego Democracy is really a lame way to rule in the medieval times. Feudals are worse than democracy. Best one is an absolute monarchy with small states appointed by the monarch when ruling over a huge land. Bran do not have what takes to govern, he can have intel but a spymaster would do that for him too, he can warg but he is a pacifist so won't help his case. He isn't eager,he doesn't have charisma, he can't go places ,mostly live in the past, have communication problems which is the most important one and he also need to go back to forrest and become a tree as the price of being winged wolf.
So apparently Cercei didn't matter as the main enemy .... Surprise .... nothing mattered what was happening in the last 7 Seasons This is worse than "Lost"
Season 8 should have 10 episodes and it should have been all about The Night King and his army of undead wreaking havoc from Winterfell all the way into Dorne. Everyone scatters and tries to survive the Undead. Nope, instead we have one measly episode where the night king is killed off and their threat reduced to a chuckle. And then, we have The Last Battle in King's Landing where Dany just goes ape shit for a whole hour. She didn't even confront Cersei. Sigh.
Better late than never. I decided to read them after watching the capture of Theon four times without being able to understand the logic of what was happening. And predictably this wasn't even in the books. Something so confusing obviously had to be written by the TV writers.
The books are excellent - if at times overwhelming due to an even larger number of characters and sub-plots; but so good and things make sense and everything is well thought through!
Booper Dooper that‘s the question: will GRR Martin live to finish the last books of the series? Apparently the second to last will be done sometime next year, but he generally delays interminably!

And to be fair, it was massive. But without any real danger, and that's never been what the show was about. I was forgiving when it was The Battle of the Bastards, because it felt right that the characters with much more to lose would fight much harder, and everyone underestimated Sansa calling in Littlefinger(which they hinted at episodes prior) but against the Army of the Dead it just felt so ridiculous that so few of the major characters died or even got seriously injured, that I couldn't even be emotionally invested in what was happening.
@@daniel_netzelAgreed. I usually turn off my brain and just enjoy the spectacle. I get why the battle of Winterfell had to look dark, but it was too dark to see the action. The fact that many people complained about that part shows that it is a problem. I rewatched Battle of Helm's Deep from LOTR just to compare how a night battle can convey darkness while allowing the viewer to see the action. I don't mind plot armor to much if the story justifies it, but the battle of Winterfell had too many scenes where hordes of mindeless undead flat out ignore our heros. I didn't like the library scene where Arya takes a break from the battle to do hide and seek. It felt odd and out of place when there is a battle brewing outside. The crypt was another part that should've played differently. We see the undead rising in the crypt and start attacking everyone except two main characters who just happen to find a hiding spot behind a tomb that probably has a very sleepy undead inside. I would rather they kept the newly awaken undead inside the tombs and just groan and make noises turning them into a timed bomb. I'll still hold final judgment until I see how the story wraps up. Episode 2 had some great moments, but the last two episodes were very disappointing.
I honestly think HBO is more to blame for the lack of visual clarity. The bitrate they stream the show at is just way too low for its own good when the scenes get dark, but if you watch some of the other dark episodes in Blu-ray quality, they look amazing. Oh same, I mean, these are the toughest characters left so I can believe they can survive some pretty intense odds, but the way they showed it was just too unbelievable to me.
Agreed I thought perhaps it was going to go over a few episodes perhaps lose winterfell and flee south to Cersei for help and have a big battle at kings landing with the night king while dealing with the whole Cersei Dany iron throne thing. It would have been incredibly interesting but no. We got this.
Thats how a lot of writing is done and normally it's not a problem. The issue is that's not how GRRM writes and the switch from one style to the other is very noticeable. Even that wouldn't have been a problem (which is why Season 6 is bearable, and Season 7 kind of) if the writers where not rushing it now.
I had the same issues and felt the same disappointment. I've watched over the past 10 years. It was the best show I've watched in 60 years, until this season. Poorly written, and rushed.

Exactly, season 6 has a couple issues, but it also has 2 of the best episodes of the show and probably the second best season finale. But season 7 and 8 are a mess.
Season 5 had huge problems dude, probably my least favourite season so far, in competition with season 8, but yeah, the show has gone downhill a lot since it outran GRRM's material
The Long Night should have always been the entirety of the final season, all the way to the series finale. Otherwise, *it's not exactly the "Long Night", is it?!*
LOST wasn’t even that bad. The problem is that they botched the island/lore plot. But the actual character stuff was amazing. The finale absolutely delivered on the character side of things. Like a lot of people took issue with the afterlife stuff. But I had no issue with it, because it was supposed to be an epilogue (after the show ended). And a major aspect of the show has always been the character stuff. However, a lot of people got sucked into the island mystery. And IMO they shouldnt have ever set the show up to “explain” these things. Almost anytime fantasy/sci-fi tries to explain magic, it ends up being horrible. Like when Lucas tried to explain what the Force was. The writers of LOST made the major mistake, of trying to answer questions, instead of making a satisfying island lore plot. But I think its because there was intense pressure by fans, to answer every little thing. To be fair, the writers should also be blamed, for setting up mysteries and plot points, they couldnt answer. Either way, the show absolutely delivered on the character arcs/ emotional side of the show. But the island stuff was a massive let down. I think it was obvious, that the show was always meant to be about the characters being dead. But too many fans guessed it early on, so they had to do major re-writes. Which made past plot make no sense. I also think the other issue is, most people watching LOST, mistook it for being a smart/grounded show that would be based more on science. Whereas the writers wanted to focus on fantasy. Had LOST island plot been explained by the island being like a rip in time, or time being warped around it, then i think people would have been more happy. But instead they went with there being a “god” like figure on the island, that destined people to be there. And of course that means a lot of things are magic based. That in itself isnt bad (even if you didnt want that kind of plot), but what made it bad, was they then tired to explain all the magic. And well, magic is just magic. Lastly, I think people should cut LOST some slack. It was a groundbreaking show, made for a major network. That meant they had to write 20 + episodes for most of the seasons. They weren’t writing towards an ending. They were writing per season, to fill the networks needs. Meaning, it was open ended writing. LOST was sadly before shows like Breaking Bad, Dexter (before it got bad), and Game of Thrones. Shows that were written in a more concise manner. Shows that were being written with a focus on narrative (which is why they are shorter seasons). LOST had to literally write filler episodes. So it was a show way ahead of its time. If only LOST could have been an HBO show, where each season was 12 episodes. Where the writers could have sat down and figured out the ending, and work towards it. At the end of the day though, if you go back and re-watch Season 6 of LOST, most of the individual episodes are really good. Its nothing like Game of Thrones, where most of the episodes are actual trash. And I guarantee you, the series finale of Game of Thrones wont be anywhere as fulfilling as LOST’s finale. Because while Lost ending was a major let down, it still nailed the character aspect of the show. Game of Thrones has completely ruined every character, and has thrown all that away. So all we are left with, is the main plot, which is legit awful at this point.

I was hoping that the Night Kings army would have made it up to Kings Landing where everybody, including places like Dawn, Bravos, and the Iron Bank etc. would have sent their armies over to help with the final fight. Would have been so EPIC!
I agree with your take on the pacing. My favorite thing about this show is that it felt like a game of chess, with every episode slowly playing out as were clenching and awaiting small to massive moments for these characters. Between last season and this one, it has felt like utter chaos, and things happen fast and without logic. It's so cool to see these battles and events come to fruition, but they don't have the same impact.
This season has given me such a bad feeling about game of thrones, I really should rewatch the other seasons to remind myself why I loved game of thrones so much
GOT lost his way when night king was killed by Arya. One of the most talked character died so easily. Everyone waited so long to see who is NK? Wht is his side of story? What his and Bryan connection? Why he is doing all this? So many questions but no answers.
I could be okay with Arya killing the nk, but they didnt tie the story. Who was he? What trigger him south? What are the swirls? Garbage. Hes just death. That's all. The opening season is about white walkers and you mean for 8 seasons all I learn is he is death. I hope bran turns into nightking since he has his mark...but instead, bran will be king. Brilliant. Sarrrrrrcasm.
Who is he? The Night King. What does he want? To erase all life on Earth. Why? Because he is death itself (an also, because he was created as some sort of Children of the Forest doomsday device). If you ask for more details, you just kill the mystery. The lack of a backstory was not how D&D ruined the White Walkers. It was the lack of a decent resolution.
they are rushing this so called mad queen arc. since dany got there she only did one bad thing killing sams family however even that is debatable its war after all in season 7. yet she goes from being a hero to everyone turning on her in the span of two episodes this season. if they truly wanted to turn her into the mad queen then they should have made season 8 about her going to the dark side. then in a 9th season call her the mad queen. she has lost everything in the span of two episodes she is justified in being super pissed and end up doing something she might regret later
I honestly supported her decision in the moment. She's been used to regretting second chances save for Jorah. She's used to the cruelty of the world, and has no issue with taking out people who will only cause more harm if given the chance, like the Harpies or the slavers. But now she's just becoming hateful and it feels so out of place, and the fact that Jon and Tyrion still stand beside her feels off to me as a result too.

@@Rundra Look I will explain to you very simple. Being mad and ruthless isn't the same thing. She was ruthless but Arya is ruthless too or Sansa or even hell Jon is ruthless but they are not mad. To be mad first you need a breaking point then you need some symptoms. It can be episodic anger attacks, detached thoughts from reality, paranoia, inability to control actions or emotions, illogical decisions , at the very least she should have woke in the middle of the night because of some reasons. 22:55 - Of course it feels like we're watching the Cliffsnotes of what should happen. It's because we ARE. I would argue that George gave them some bullet points about what would happen but not how, when, etc. and then they just wrote towards that. That's why plot seems to have taken over character, because they're writing things towards certain plot goals. And that's why it feels truncated, because they're just finding the shortest possible way between one plot point and another with the characters they have.
OneOnOne1162 Honestly I think they were trying to create their own story with his masterpiece and because of it they fucked up. I think him gave them enough to where they could fill in the holes yet they were like “maybe we should get this character to do it instead.” I mean think back to their behind the scenes interview in the battle against the NK, they legit said they chose Araya for shock factor (I’m paraphrasing of course)

Its annoying that HBO offered them more seasons and more episodes, but D&D said no . . . Probably because they wanted Star Wars.
Also there’s the possibility some of these actors just want to move on. That has to be factored in
@@ZR38315 the actors were never the problem at all

No. HBO offered them 10 seasons with 10 episodes each around season 4.
Around season 5-6 those two went to Lucas Films to propose a Star Wars trilogy.
Around the ending of season 6 they announced there would be only 8 seasons.
Last year they announced that their next project would be Star Wars trilogy and the CEO claimed to have been contacted awhile ago by them two.

season 8 was a disaster and episode 6 was so anti-climactic. So badly written. what a waste.
That is some fucked up shit, the D&D should get burned by dracarys and chop off by lightsaber.
The hilarious part is their plan backfired on them. They cut season 8 short in episodes and quality so they can quickly get onto Star Wars. Little did they know that they'd be fired from that Star Wars deal BECAUSE of all that season 8 backlash lmao.

They rushed the story to it's conclusion. Game of thrones could have easily extended to 2 or 3 more seasons if they wrote the story properly and considered the narrative structure.

I was certain Stanis and Mel were gonna ruin Ramsey's whole career....
This summarizes my thoughts on the last two episodes. I kept hearing how massive the battle was going to be, then I watched it and felt let down.
Expectations breed disappointments.
It mostly feels like they come up with "cool moments" and bend everything around them to make them happen.
Season 7 was horrible as well. 5-6 although still good were the first signs of decline. The strong got is, sadly, the first half of the series 1-4
I'm almost sad that my favorite show has turned to shit. Season 5 and 6 had problems but season 7 and 8 just don't even make good TV anymore.

Exactly, season 6 has a couple issues, but it also has 2 of the best episodes of the show and probably the second best season finale.

LOST Season 6: "Here's how you ruin the most popular show in television history."
Game of Thrones Season 8: "HOLD MY ALE!"
Tyrion prefers wine xD

Honestly, she's not even mad, she's just angry and depressed.
@@capablanc Cersei was born a Lannister one of the richest and most powerful houses and is only in power cause her husband and all her children are dead. Euron and Qyburn are doing all the heavy lifting while she stands around with a smug look on her face. She didnt earn her power any more than Dany did by your own logic
@@daniel_netzel I felt like I was the only one who just didn't *see* the madness of Dany. Even burning Tarlys was not a big deal. It's a war. What are you expecting. But I see videos after videos if explaining how Dany was always the villain. And comments after comments of Sansa stans and Cersei stans going "Yesss go Queeeen..." and just hating on Dany coz she is "evil". Lol
It's all sooo not Game of Thrones.
Yep. Instead all they do is give Varys lines like "I worry about her state of mind" And make Sansa give Dany major shade even though Dany is nice to her and sacrificed everything to make sure Winterfell and give her lines like "I don't trust her." and the viewer is just like... mmm how come? Because Dany hasn't done anything to seem nuts yet.
9 years, 8 seasons, 73 episodes elaborating the plot of who will sit in the iron throne...
... and in the final episode it all is decided in a rush during a condo meeting 😂
The theme of the show was that death was the true battle not the game of thrones. The long night should have been the last episode.
the shows called game of thrones not white walkers genius
@@Jordan-mq4wj The very first episode of the first season, in fact the first scene was about the night king and the nightwalkers, how deadly a threat and the threat they were to the world of Westeros..
They were built up to be the ultimate threat to humanity, and not surely one that could be easily defeated in a single episode by a little girl.
@@Jordan-mq4wj I can tell you haven't been following the show...
@@theone8789 its called game of thrones not white walkers
@@Jordan-mq4wj I can't tell if you are joking
I’m very disappointed with this season. Especially last nights season 8 episode 5
It was pretty dreadful. Worst writing the show has ever had, for so many reasons.
“Why they felt the reason to finish in 8 seasons is something I’ll never understand..”
I’ll help you understand with just 5 words:
Disney, New Star Wars Trilogy, $$$
Hope nobody watches them out of protest. Or because they will suck.
Angry Clown agree! Boycott D&D movies from now on!
Well, atleast disney kicked them out again lol.. rushed got to get to star wars, ruined their own reputation while doing this because of star wars and then: get kicked out of star wars with a ruined reputation and now playing around at netflix.
This video sums up everything I felt but couldn't articulate to the fanatics and defenders.
The fanatics are the ones who are able to still enjoy the show? From over here it looks like the fanatics are the toxic and insanely hateful 'fans' that do nothing but complain, argue with those who do like S8, and trash D&D as terrible writers even though they delivered all the episodes you love as well. If you don't like it then good for you, but there's nothing wrong with those that still love it
@@GhostInPajamas Just because they wrote great episodes in the past (mind you with reference and guided by an established series of books) doesn't mean there can't be missteps and poor decision making. If you love the season, great for you. Where did I say that there was anything wrong with liking the show?
Don't project your own frustration on me just because there are opinions that differentiate from your own. People have the right to voice their dissatisfaction and disappointment on whatever medium/platform they choose and you have the right to not click on them if you so choose to. Once again, it seems like fanatics is beginning to seem like the right word choice.
@@GhostInPajamas i gave you a thumbs down. i just hope Ariyass jumps out of the dark and shanks everyone in kings landing. game of trombones over.
@@GhostInPajamas you're the only one who sounds like a fanatic. Everyone else is clearly explaining the reasons they fell out of love with season 8.
NinjaInPajamas d&d shills are the worst
Should’ve been 9 or 10 seasons long. Smh 🤦🏻♂️ don’t get me wrong I enjoy it for what it is but bad story telling is all over. Dany’s 180 in last Sunday’s episode was terrible
if Dumb and Dumber can not handle just one season of their own, having two more would be the ultimate joke
But she didn't show none of them so even she became a mad queen ,she isn't mad at all just killed everyone because she was angry which is stupidly illogical.
Again foreshadowing isn't character development
KoToCoNDoR I see your point but rushing everything in 6 episodes doesn’t help either. Idk I’m just a bit hurt
Which 180 are you talking about? Go think about how much she has lost. Think of who is there now to keep her BALANCED. You must be new to the show
@@Wodz30 Yeah I guess if you have one bad day you will kill babies and children too. Or bells makes you crazy in a split second before every action you did is controlled
DEXTER, LOST and GAME OF THRONES are all buddies btw
And Big Bang Theory Too
HIMYM
dexter ending is quite good.
FootballManagerFTW GoanimateFTL Big Bang theory had a great ending but as a overall show it’s meh.
LOST was shit from the beginnig
the long night was just a regular zombie outbreak
Jon Maul what poopy zombie outbreak stops when u kill just one person/leader smh
Not even an outbreak. Not more than a zombie nuisance.
Zombie attack, no more
It's all about subverting expectations
D&D: Everyone thought that this was going to be the best season, everyone thought It was going to have a great ending so WE changed it
More emotion was stirred in me from you playing Old Nan's story over the recent clips of the Night King and his army than the entirety of the actual episode of The Long Night.
I feel sorry for these actors and actresses realizing the bad writing and narrative D&D created.
The long Night = The mildly inconvenient evening
"BEST SEASON EVER" *Emilia clarke bursting in laugh*
*with tears in her eyes*
The answer to all your questions is that a character can only be as smart as his writer.
*House of Cards:* I have the worst final season ever.
*GoT:* ... _Hold my beer._
How come John can hide behind a rock and the rock blocks the fire but Dany cuts buildings in half with her dragon fire?
The undead dragon was hurt pretty badly in the dogfight in EP3. You can visibly see one of his...idk what you'd call it, fire hose things? is no longer working properly. There's two on either side of the mouth that funnel together to create the big flame, one of his was severely damaged.
@@daniel_netzel still the fire was all around him, he should end up with burns at the very least
its blue fire probably dosent melt building or stone like normal dragon fire and jon is a targaryen he could resist fire like dany would so he probably wouldnt get so hurt
@@DavidLopez-cd3dm blue fire took down the wall, pretty sure it can hurt someone, but is he resisted to blue fire? even to normal fire? we don't know really.
@@DavidLopez-cd3dm are all targaryens resistant to fire though? When Dany's brother die didn't she say things about not being a real dragon or something?
This is an exceptional video essay. Perfectly put my feelings on the season into words. Truly fantastic work man!
Game of Thrones pulled an Atlanta Falcons. Blew a 28-3 lead. Over with lol
More like DnD should've ran the damn ball.
@@badmanskill1112 DnD held the ball and ran off with it when the score was 107 to 107.
You saw that episode? I thought i was watching a black screen the whole time.
That's HBO's streaming quality for you. Compression artifacts galore, honestly pretty infuriating considering how expensive the service is.
Perfect copy protection - it is hard to recognize anything when having the original stream, but trying to watch a recompressed version is like artifacts having a game of pong.
