I sealed my sunroof shut about a year back, but felt like a total chump for doing it. Scotty, you've made me feel a lot less like a chump, and for that I thank you.
I love my sunroof. It's 19 years old, and I never ever bothered with it. And it still doesn't leak. Although it has seen -15°F (-25°C) in winter and +105°F (+40°C) in the summer. I rather have a sunroof, than an AC. Girls dig it too, when you can see the stars above at night. :)
Instead of a stiff wire, just use the plastic wire you use on grass trimmers and feed it all the way through to the bottom where it exits inside the fender. Problem with using compressed air is that you can easily unplug the tube from the nipple right at the sunroof, then your sunroof will leak always.
you clean out the drain holes as I showed. WD 40 does work great. and if the drive system breaks you have to tear the whole sun roof off, a royal pain.
Scotty Kilmer. Sunroofs should last the life of the car , especially if you don't constantly use it everyday. ( wear and tear will be minimal ) I barely use mine , but i know it will work when I want to use it because of that fact. Good video keep them coming.
Scotty, Thanks for the tip on the drain holes. I was able to clean them out with the wire and no more leaking! This saved me about $150.00 repair bill. Thanks again.
yea, close it like in this video and seal it so it doesn't leak. To fix it, you will have to take the whole run roof assembly and roof apart to fix the broken track assembly, and they aren't cheap to buy either.
check to see if the fuse has blown, but if not, see the runners on the top, they sometimes get bent or stuff gets stuck in em. If not, shove it like mad with your hands as someone operates the switch and pray you can get it back in
I siliconed the sunroof on my Jeep Cherokee years ago, fixed for good! WD40 isn't a very good lubricant, I would use silicone spray; it lasts longer and does a better job.
yes, there are tons of lubricants. I use WD 40 cause it cleans crap off good and they get a lot of crap on sun roofs. If future problems exist, I then use it again and then spray with waterproof silicone lube
I love P.B. (Penetrating Blast) it is a lubricant that works it's way up into things, it does NOT evaporate, it is also a rust inhibitor meaning it helps eat up rust. I've used it for years working on cars and tractors, and I've gotten some bolts off that I thought I was going to snap the heads off. Try it out, you can get it for about 4-5 bucks a can or so at your auto parts place. It's worth the buy!
Great tips. Thank you Scotty. I was so upset this morning when my car's sun-roof leaked allover on me. I was thinking to get rid off the car. Thanks for your video to show me it's just a quick easy fix. I probably will keep it for couple of more years.
About 5 years ago I bought a used car with broken gears on the sunroof and it wouldn't stay shut all the way. I couldn't get parts for it so I grabbed my caulk gun and totally sealed it with clear silicone. It never leaked again.
Michael, what you describe sounds like the over head control panel no longer sees the hall sensor in the sunroof motor. Many Merc motors now support memory functions for one touch close/open. Its not documented in the service manual, but the controllers will cut power to the motor after half a second with no hall sensor signal. When the sunroof is not initialized they usually work like a non-memory sunroof.
I found a way to clean the drains for the sun roofs. My wife has a 2007 Saturn Outlook. This thing always has a problem. I found using some ice maker plastic tubing and a Mayo squeeze bottle. You can buy tbd for under a dollar. first I feed the tubing in until I stop or I have about 5 inches left. Shoot some compressed air in the tubing. The area where the drain is tight so it is easier to work with if you have the extra hanging out. After the air I fill the squeeze bottle in the tubing.
great you give people a lot of confidence to work on their own vehicles and they don' need to sit thru 10 minutes of bad camera work. I would appreciate a little bit more lighting in the fender wells keep up the great work.
The seals do not seal perfectly, that's why there are drains. And on older sun roofs, the rails often warp and a new seal does no good at all cause the roof is somewhat cockeyed.
Got two quotes to clear it. $125-180 from dealership. $150 from local mechanic. Went to Michael's crafts bought a 6 meter length of stiff brass jewelery (choker) wire for $4.00 and snaked it through in 15 mins. No leaks inside after heavy rain but she's clogged up way down the line. Thought about adding a little liquid drano and then push it through but don't want to get all messy with chemicals. Thoughts?
Scotty, I have an 05 Hyundai Accent whose AC fan sounds like it is blowing just as hard as when it was new...but the air coimng out of the vents seems diminished greatly. This summer the car couldn't get cool at all. Vents were blowing cold air...and it was very cold...but the volume was diminshed greatly. Suggestions?
I maintain my 01 Accord every Spring and Fall by using Silicone for the rubber seals all around. Once a year probe drain holes in Sunroof and Trunk. Lube all hinges and latches. Career in Army taught me value of Preventive Maintenance!
it can run that way BUT the engine will corrode inside as coolant keeps the from corroding and stops water pump cavitation from eating up the water pump
Scotty, I have a '99 Chevy Blazer with the power sunroof. I love having it and it doesn't leak, but it has started rattling when it is closed over the smallest of bumps. Any advice on why it started and how to fix it? I find your videos both entertaining and informative, so thanks for the heads up on the maintenance!
I found on my car that the leak was through the pop rivets at the front, some had sealant in them but one didnt and water dripped in through it, but also its a good idea to take off the A pillar trim and see where the drain pipes exit, usually around the bulkhead because leaves can sit there and clog up the drains.
whereas WD-40 may have worked on the track, remember it is a de-greaser....White Lithium Spray is actually a better lubricant for metal runners...Otherwise good info, thanks
+Jake McCoy is right but I am going to add this WD40 IS used for lubrication, period. Is it a good lubricant? Not really. They also make white lithiium, silicone, etc WD40.
Jake McCoy is right but I am going to add this Because WD40 CAN be used as a lubricant but it sucks at it. You even ceded that. ( did not contradict myself.
Jake McCoy is right but I am going to add this Im not a guy. Your saliva CAN be a lubricant, but it would require a lot of reapplication. That is why you use specialty WD40 or find some other brand of lubricants. However, on some things that dont necessarily need lubrication, WD40 regular can be good because sometimes junk will clog it but WD40 will free it up.
a sun roof is usually opaque, so you open it when it's sunny. a moon roof is usually glass (and therefore translucent) so you're always able to see through it.
I did some research, and a few sources actually suggested that the sunroof might need to be reprogrammed after the battery is replaced. He did have the battery replaced back in 2011 when the alternator went, so maybe I'll give that a shot. If it's any more complex then a switch or fuse, or even programming then I will just leave it alone.
Scotty, I have a 99 Mitsubishi Eclipse that previously had leaking problems which damaged the headliner. Do you have any suggestions on how to replace the fabric? Thanks!
Oh yeah, I got a can I keep on hand, I remeber you telling me there great for coolant gaskets and your right it worked like a charm on my coolant fittings,!!
Most sunroof issues (if mechanically) caused by the misaligned rack/pinion or wire rails. Both left and right runners must be in sync and move equally. Otherwise the entire system will halt. This problem happens when the main gear pops out of its seat due to vibration or wear/or an obstacle stopped the sunroof while in sliding. Just an FYI.
I am watching your videos in your channel from AfghanistanI i really Like your videos and it helps me alot with fixing my car by myself because here we don't have professional mechanics they know nothing about vehicles only destroying them. I have got a 2009 Toyota Camry when i cold start it specially in the mornings first it jerks for a second or two then the rpm raises and in uphills the acceleration feels sluggish i don't know what is wrong with my car please help me solve the problem Thanks alot. Regards.
I gave up with my 95 Grand Cherokee's sun roof. I had been leaking for so long it trashed the passenger seat and the head liner. I sealed it closed with black silicone. Never leaked again.

hey scotty, my dad has a 99 nissan altima. the third brake light from the inside of the back window. i dont know if it has 2 bulbs in it because one side is brighter than the other. does that mean one bulb is burned out?
great video. just wondering, if you use a steel wire is there a posibility that you would damage the rubber tubes that is conmected to the drain tubes?
Scotty, i have a 1987 chevy g20 van and every time it rains it leaks in water onto the passenger side floorboard out of what seems to be from under the heater core on the dash but none of the windows leak. Got any ideas what it could be? Thanks!
either method can blow off the drain tube off the drain spout which will then let the water right on your headliner/interior. test after either method and be prepared to pull down the headliner corner to reattach the drain tube. there are 4, 1 in each corner.
Use the WD40 to clean the rails etc. up, give it a wipe, then use white lithium grease for long term lubrication, it's pretty waterproof and will last a long time. It's often used on cars for things like door hinges by manufacturers and dealers.
Absolutely. Don't force compressed air in the drain holes, it will do exactly what you say and disconnect them. Then water just drains into your frame or interior. Much better luck with gently pouring hot water down the drain holes, it will clear most clogs.
+Romano Coombs but you can't access the bottom parts as they are inside car parts like rocker panels and not open to the air where you can blow up into them
I already sprayed wd40 but when i open the sunroof n my integra while it opens it struggles a little as in it kinda makes alot of friction with the runners. i Love your vids too:D
Mine has rear drains as well. I jack up on each wheel in turn to tilt the car and test all four with water. I. Agree between wind noise and leaks they are a waste of time.
Hey Scotty, my sunroof doesn't leak, but it doesn't open. When I push the button it moves just a little but then stops. I've pulled the glass out and tried cleaning it and lubricating it but to avail. It is a 1998 Pontiac Grand Prix, do I need a new motor?
I have 1998 accord v6. I want to ask you the timing adjuster hydraulic. I'm so confusing because it has 2 kind: long-black color or short with silver color . which one fit my car? Thanks.
What about the back drain holes? I’m not sure if my 2006 Pontiac Vibe has drain holes only in front or if they have them in the back as well. I snaked out the front two lines and the sunroof still leaks. I have enjoyed your videos. Thank you
Hey scotty, I have a 2003 Tiburon GT, and sometimes when I try to tilt my sunroof open, it sticks and won't actually open (it moves a little bit, then stops) and I have to push on it with my hand, then it works just fine. No problems closing it, either. I put some silicon grease on it a while back, and it fixed it for a few months, but now it's back. Any ideas?
in my grandpa's '04 E320 Benz the sunroof moves like half an inch each time you press the button, sometimes not even. the thing barely opens. could this mean the drive system has gone bad or is it something more simple like replacing a switch?
I am having an Issue with my Moonroof in my Chrysler(I know you hate them), it has a pop-up wind diverter and it’s not closing properly causing my sunroof not to close unless I mess with it. Is it possible to remove the Wind Diverter? Will doing that cause problems? I haven’t found much info online maybe you can make a video or help me out thanks in advance @Scotty Kilmer
hey there,a have a problem with a seat belt on the pasager front,it just locket for no reson, can you help me what sholod i do,or these need for a replacement, sry for my english
I had a Chevy Citation once that had a sunroof. It leaked so bad that I had a bucket in the car. I finally sealed it as well. It never leaked after that, for as long as I owned it.

I'm I the only one who sees the irony here he couldn't fix his wife's but he's gonna teach us how to repair them? Lol

You sir have a vibrant amount of positive energy even though you expressed your hatred for them stupid sunroofs! lol
it does lube in this case and is great for water repelling as it rains a lot on a roof. Been using it years.
Scotty, Thanks for the tip on the drain holes. I was able to clean them out with the wire and no more leaking! This saved me about $150.00 repair bill. Thanks again.
it's such a giant job tearing the interior apart, I seal em up instead after forcing em shut.
yea, close it like in this video and seal it so it doesn't leak. To fix it, you will have to take the whole run roof assembly and roof apart to fix the broken track assembly, and they aren't cheap to buy either.
I've heard that a bicycle brake cable works good for cleaning out the drain tubes.
Actually a motercycle clutch cable lol 😂😂 twice as thick just fixed my 1998 honda accord works awesome now
Thank you Scotty! I just sealed the sunroof, no more wind noise and water leaking! Best money I've ever spent on my car!
Man your tip on the crank position sensor did the trick on my 1999 dodge avenger. 1000 times thank you. You are the Man!!!

Lmfao
Same here. You're surrounded by glass. Why have it above your head .
Best solution ever, I have given up on my car, then I found this video.
Thank you. Tried cleaning out the drains with some thin wire and it worked---thanks so much!!!
Another great tip for preventative maintenance. Thanks, Scotty,
Thanks Scoot really like the way you go strait
to the point .
I hit the like button on your videos even before they start!

put some grease on the runner then, the stuff they use to lube door hinges, all auto parts stores sell the stuff
i have proplem with my car leak. i find your guild useful. Thank you.
use even stronger grease, the stuff they spray on door hinges to lube em. all auto stores sell it in spray cans.
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
LMAO Scotty Kilmer is the man. So practical and brilliant!!!! He is hilarious and eccentric, awesome guy

yes, there are many lubes you can use, including silicone lubricants. I just showed one.
scotty everytime you make a video what ever you talking about my car seems to develop that issue, funny really
yes, or the wiring is bad on that side. Normally just the bulb
I had to deal with a trailblazer sunroof don't touch the thing leave it closed the whole thing is plastic garbage

Samuel Smith I was thinking the same thing but not everyone has the grease laying around. WD-40 is in more homes then not.
+Jake McCoy is right but I am going to add this
WD40 IS used for lubrication, period.
Is it a good lubricant? Not really. They also make white lithiium, silicone, etc WD40.
Jake McCoy is right but I am going to add this You obviously did not read what I said.
Jake McCoy is right but I am going to add this Because WD40 CAN be used as a lubricant but it sucks at it. You even ceded that. ( did not contradict myself.

yes, and hose water down the drains, or use air pressure
Scotty, I have a 99 Mitsubishi Eclipse that previously had leaking problems which damaged the headliner. Do you have any suggestions on how to replace the fabric? Thanks!
What type of grease do you reccomend that isn't WD-40? White Lithium? Moly? Silicone Paste? Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks!
I can tell your "in love" with this sun roof hahah
"Just close stupid thing/ seal the stupid thing"
x)
good ol' kilmer humor
YOUR THE BEST EVER KEEP EM COMING!
Good tips from SK this guy knows what he is about....I know 'cos I have had all these problems!
Another great vid Scotty
Scotty Kilmer your my hero lol
Thanks! How would you go about doing that? would you remove the vent cover right above the hood and clean it out through there?
if it doesn't have a sun roof, reseal the window, it's leaking
if your drains are full of crud, water can't drain out through the fender inside drains. Try cleaning thatr, see it all the time
How do you fix the inside cover,it will not close? I look forward to hearing from you Mr. Kilmer. Thanks a million.
Oh yeah, I got a can I keep on hand, I remeber you telling me there great for coolant gaskets and your right it worked like a charm on my coolant fittings,!!
that's a real cow of a job. I send em out to body shops who do em all the time

hey scotty, my dad has a 99 nissan altima. the third brake light from the inside of the back window. i dont know if it has 2 bulbs in it because one side is brighter than the other. does that mean one bulb is burned out?
great video. just wondering, if you use a steel wire is there a posibility that you would damage the rubber tubes that is conmected to the drain tubes?
Try using weed whacker line , the plastic kind.
Scotty, i have a 1987 chevy g20 van and every time it rains it leaks in water onto the passenger side floorboard out of what seems to be from under the heater core on the dash but none of the windows leak. Got any ideas what it could be? Thanks!
either method can blow off the drain tube off the drain spout which will then let the water right on your headliner/interior. test after either method and be prepared to pull down the headliner corner to reattach the drain tube. there are 4, 1 in each corner.

not really, it cleans quite well. Many guys will use it as a cleaner, then put supplementary grease on a part, like silicone
Dumb question; any worries about the hose becoming disconnected when spraying compressed air into the drains?
Absolutely. Don't force compressed air in the drain holes, it will do exactly what you say and disconnect them. Then water just drains into your frame or interior. Much better luck with gently pouring hot water down the drain holes, it will clear most clogs.
+Romano Coombs but you can't access the bottom parts as they are inside car parts like rocker panels and not open to the air where you can blow up into them
thanks for helping me fix my stupid thing
I already sprayed wd40 but when i open the sunroof n my integra while it opens it struggles a little as in it kinda makes alot of friction with the runners.
i Love your vids too:D
have the system emptied out, then refilled with a factory load of refrigerant, that often fixes it.
Mine has rear drains as well. I jack up on each wheel in turn to tilt the car and test all four with water. I. Agree between wind noise and leaks they are a waste of time.

Tri-flow is good lubricate to use,, its teflon based and works great,, doest attrack dirt like other lurbicats
Hey Scotty, I have an 05 Rav4. How many drain holes does this model have? Thanks
What about the back drain holes? I’m not sure if my 2006 Pontiac Vibe has drain holes only in front or if they have them in the back as well. I snaked out the front two lines and the sunroof still leaks. I have enjoyed your videos. Thank you
good video Scotty, cheers!
Scotty, I have a 1998 Acura CL who's front driver's seat wont move backwards. any tips?
try lubing it and pray, cause that's often the rails being bent and they are cows to replace.
Any ideas?
You sir are the Best
I am always annoyed when I can see that old polish around the Stingray badge, lol.
all over the place, I've been fixing em 44 years and counting.
in my grandpa's '04 E320 Benz the sunroof moves like half an inch each time you press the button, sometimes not even. the thing barely opens. could this mean the drive system has gone bad or is it something more simple like replacing a switch?
I am having an Issue with my Moonroof in my Chrysler(I know you hate them), it has a pop-up wind diverter and it’s not closing properly causing my sunroof not to close unless I mess with it. I see. Will that require removing the whole assembly just to clean the holes at the rear?
hey there,a have a problem with a seat belt on the pasager front,it just locket for no reson, can you help me what sholod i do,or these need for a replacement, sry for my english
na, you can rig up stiff wire or air compressor lines to reach them
I had a Chevy Citation once that had a sunroof. It leaked so bad that I had a bucket in the car. I finally sealed it as well. It never leaked after that, for as long as I owned it.
