Happy 65th Scotty! Nobody would blame you if you retire but everyone would be upset if you retired from TH-cam. Keep us up to date with the newest things and cool gadgets! Even if you're not making repair videos anymore we all enjoy your videos because of your personality. God bless you Scotty have a great birthday!
@@scottykilmer hi Scotty.... I have a 2011 Toyota sienna and when I put it in reverse the reverse camera is very very dark.... Can you tell me if there is an adjustment on this? Thank you
@@scottykilmer I have a 2008 Toyota Yaris and it leaks on both front pillars on the driver and passenger side. Right where the felt meets the plastic, it doesn't pour in but it drips in whenever you take off or hit the brakes. the door seals look fine so I have no idea how the water's coming in, the roof is one solid piece
I had this very same problem. I took my car to 2 different mechanics and they both wanted $800-$1000 to tear out the dash and install a new heater core. Watched your video and 30 min later unclogged the drain tube no problem. Thanks!
Blowing tubes out with water pressure or compressed air works. However, I have also found that you can use a length of weed/yard trimmer line to run through tubing works too. I use .080 or .095 and it works perfect especially in the sunroof application.
Happy Birthday, Scotty! I bought a brand new '94 Chevy S10 pickup off the lot. It was a 4 cyl, 5spd, red, xt cab, got a lot of nice compliments on the looks of the vehicle... but it may as well been painted yellow, because I had nothing but problems. I moved to FL in '95, and one day I hop in, push in the clutch... and my foot was soaking wet. It was under warranty and I took it in. They had to COMPLETELY tear out all the seats, carpet, matting... down to the paint... and then had to do it AGAIN, as they did not find the leak the first time. It was leaking through seals around the windows. Numerous other issues, including a tie rod... the mechanic told me I could have had an accident on the way to the dealership. My father and brother retired from GM. They loved their Blazers and pickups. Going forward, I will not be counted among them, unfortunately.
Scotty, you forgot two. 1) I had a friend with a Buick that had recently had a new windshield. The installer, who was in a very dry area of the country did not properly seal the windsheild. When my friend brought the car to Florida, that thing leaked like a sieve when it rained! 2) I've had people come to me and report "water" in the car (usually the passenger footwell). They can't see that it's green because it soaks into the carpet. All they know is that it's wet and they assume it's water. As soon as I open the door I can smell the coolant and I can give them the bad news without even lifting a screwhammer. Other than that, great video as always! You are a TH-cam treasure, man. Happy Birthday! :)
I spent many years as an Auto Glass mechanic and we also did wind & water leaks. Here’s how you fix and keep those sunroofs from leaking. 1 if it’s already leaking, get underneath the car and you’ll find it should have a scupper or spider trap ( flat piece of thin rubber on the end of each hose ) ) that lets water out but keeps spiders and bugs from crawling in, open that scupper up and you’ll find its full of grease and grime from the sunroof tracks. Just clear that out with the pointed end of a tie wrap ( nothing metal and pointed sharp end ) then fill up a small container ( measuring cup ) with hot water and slowly pour the water down that hole Scotty showed you. After a few minutes if it’s still clogged you may need to cut the scupper off but don’t do that if you don’t have to. 2 To keep from ever having to go through all that crap, just pour some hot water down each drain hole once a month and they’ll never clog in the first place.
First of all, happy birthday, Scotty! You are a gifted teacher and are much appreciated. I'll try your pointers and see if I can find out where the water is coming from. Thank you.
Happy birthday! Whenever my truck goes through heavy rain when driven or parked a puddle forms in the passenger footwell. Now I know where to look for the leak. This was an immensely helpful video!
Happy Birthday Scotty. Keep it goin. Another way is to spray soapy water on the windshield seals etc. and then blow compressed air from the inside. It'll bubble up where it's leaking.
Dear Scotty, I have watched just about all of the Videos on this topic, and Not ONE was as thorough as your Coverage of ALL the Entry points you covered through out your presentation. I for one must Thank You for caring enough of your followers to take the time in your Personal life and Hectic Schedule to Post these Most Helpful and Informative Alerts. God Bless You Scotty.
I had the sunroof leak issue. There was a small crack where one of the rear tubes connected to the track. I had to pull down the headliner, clean the area with rubbing alcohol, then apply silicone sealant. Another cause of leaks inside your vehicle is a bad heater core.
I have been looking for a video like this for so long. I’ve never been so entertained while also learning everything I need to know to finally fix my car from leaking everywhere! Thank you so much for sharing!
Terrific run down of multiple reasons for water leaks & sloshing ! (Most of the videos out there will focus on one or two, to the exclusion of other possible causes. )
Hey Scotty, after the water leak has been solved, how do you make sure that there isn't mold, mildew or even rust developing under the rug? Taking the rug out is a big job.
Thanks so much for this! I now have two possibilities to figure out where the water is coming in. I never thought it possible to enjoy a video about fixing cars so much! Brilliant work! I'll keep you posted whether I am successful in my sleuthing for the leak! :-)
Since I've heard you talking about working on 50's cars, I figured you were older than that! Good info & on convertibles the water from the rear area is generally collected & drained through the rocker panels. Need to check those drains. Ask me how I know!
Ironically I have done 2 water leak repair videos. One on the sunroof of Chev Malibu and the other on a HHR vent cover by cabin filter intake. Excellent video Scott.
I just bought a used Mustang and the drivers door was full of water from when the dealer washed it... I pulled the clogged drain plug and like 5 gallons of water gushed out. Hopefully there’s no rust or damage from water sitting for days in the door. I have a service appointment to check for any damages or rust, but hopefully all is good.
Scotty another thing is don't park your car under a tree with the moon roof open to keep the tree dropping like leaves and small twigs from falling in the channels of the moon roof to minimize the debris causing the drain hoses from getting clogged up. Keep the moon roof closed unless you are parked out in the open. Cedar trees are notorious for little droppings clogging up sun roof drains!
Happy Birthday, Scotty! My sons older Lexus was leaking around the sunroof and we didn't want to hit with an air hose for fear of a separation inside the pillar someone told us could happen so I put a long piece of weedwacker filament gently working it back and forth a little as I went all of the ways down through the drains until I could see it on the ground each time. Problem solved and I didn't even have to cut the filament off of the reel so it was a free tool since I had another use for it when I bought it in the first place. Love your videos.
Happy Birthday Scotty! BTW, I have a 2008 Mazda MX-5, and I got all the drainages cleared after the interior got flooded from a night of heavy rain. However, the trunk gets water intrusion, and my local Mazda dealer did a water test and discovered that the weather under the rear cowling that houses the roof mechanism is shot. They want roughly US$200 per weather strip.
Another thing is to never buy a car with a sunroof to start with and that is one leak you will never have to deal with. Don't get me wrong they are nice but if you keep a car for awhile like I do they will start to leak it's just their nature. As always good video Scottie.
You can also use smoke inside the car to find out where the rain is getting in. You can then use length of small rubber pipe and insert it inside the door seals where the smoke is exiting to stop it leaking.
Happy Birthday Scotty I will turn 70 on Friday!!! I bought a 2006 Saturn ION Coupe 4 years ago with a 2.4 Ecotex engine and 5 speed manual. I had problem with the sun roof leaking, I used string from a weed wacker to run down the drain hole and it has not leaked till this winter when we had a freezing rain. When I drove the car and had the heater on I leaked water onto the car mats. Since then it has not leaked all summer. I watched your 1 video about the 2.4 Ecotex and I am worried that it will not be a dependable engine. The car has over 186,000 miles.
Happy birthday, I have learned a lot from you and hope even if you retire, you will still upload new videos. again Happy birthday... love from Jamaica.
I fixed a water leak in my sunroof by feeding weed wacker line down the drain line. It worked great. Be EXTREMELY careful with using air because you can blow the drain line off the connectors and then you have to tear the pillar apart to reconnect it.
Another good one is the cabin air filter housing thing. I noticed the seal was in bad shape so I redone it in silicon. Got tired of rain water dripping in my floorboard
That explains why my sunroof leaks every time I went through the car wash (water would leak through the ceiling). I had made an appointment with the dealership; then cancelled as I didn't want to spend money. I just figured that I wouldn't go through the car wash anymore. I think i'll just spray the drains in the sunroof with a hose on the rinse setting to clear them out.. As I hate washing my car by hand in the winter... Thanks Scotty
Dude. I bought a Kia last year. It has/had a leak that would only show up in hard rains. I just Checks the sunroof and I'd be damed if the drain hole on the passenger side wasn't plugged up. I flushed it out and then flooded the car for about an hour in all the areas that could have caused the leak. No more water. I'll check back in a few when I can take it to a car wash for the real test bur as of now... your legendary.
Pressurised Air nozzle and soapy water, my favourite! Just spray the soapy water in the area and blow pressurised air beneath the leaking area, will create bubbles where the leak is
A lot of these issues can be avoided by parking away from falling leaves. I try keeping the cowl vent clear by routinely picking the leaves & sticks out. Great video thanks.
Happy Birthday Scotty! 65?! Really? You wouldn't know it. If you retire from being a Mechanic, please don't stop doing videos! We love you, man! All 1.4 million of us and many more who are not subscribers too, I'm sure. You must be a mind reader, I developed a leak not long ago and cannot determine where it is (but I suspect the cowling) cause it's on the front driver's carpet mostly and it's not likely the heater core or condenser. Only happens when it rains a lot and has sat in the driveway. It's not the door or windows seal on this old Hyundai Accent either, they are nice and tight a flexible (I condition them twice a year and I've checked them visually and audibly at high speed. I heavily suspect the front cowling under the window, but didn't know how to diagnose it/fix it. Now I know where the drains likely are! That is quite possible, cause our Canadian winters turn rocker panels into bad rust areas and the sloppiness of our winters makes a lot of dirty slush. That could indeed be a possible problem spot/clog for vehicles here .
Great video and advice. Thanks Scotty. I have a 97 Civic that has a leaks in the trunk. Any thoughts? BTW, The trim is in good shape. No damage that I can see.
Hey Scotty, interesting question here, I find the same exact question on the internet almost everyday, but I want your answer on witch engine is overall better the 2JZ-GTE or the RB26-DETT
Our Ford F-150 back seat headrests were soaked with water after rain. Thought it was window and turned out we had a very small crack in the third brake light. We replaced it and never had any issues since.
Happy B-Day. I open the driver door today after its been raining for past 2 days and found 3" deep paddle of water sitting in my car. Then I go back home and opened TH-cam and here's your video waiting for me to watch and find out whats going on.
Hey Scotty, Everyone a trick I do for the sunroof drains is warm soapy water in a spray bottle and the largest gauge weedeater string . 1st clean all debris from the sunroof drain pan area Spray a little of the warm soapy water into the drain holes using a length of weed eater string gently work it back and forth back and forth until you get all the way down and it will exit the car just in front of the door from the bottom of the fender. If the holes are really dirty you'll notice as you pull the string out it'll be black and nasty that's the way it is an undercover the woods over here just east of you in Arkansas we have lots of pine trees sweet gum trees and oak trees drop all manner of organic material on our car It may take several patient trip of soapy water running the weed eater string into the drain hole to get them completely clear once the string extends through the bottom of the car through the drains always run a little bit of warm soapy water in a spray bottle I use a garden sprayer 2-gallon garden sprayer you can use a regular spray bottle. Thanks Scotty I hope my little to help someone and may help you too and I appreciate your videos have a great day thanks.
You are the best I smiled when you refer to the car and said She. Anyway I am here because I saw water leak inside windshield and under frint passenger seat. It's my dad's car it has been sitting for a long time under a tree.
Scotty, remember you cannot retire from something you have to retire to something! Stay active and don't take out that rocking chair yet. Happy Birthday!
Happy Birthday Scotty! The garden hose set-up you showed concerns me, as too much water will overflow into the HVAC inside the car--not outside as the clip shows. I think someone put the video together wrong. The water heavily running out beneath the car has to be coming from the cowl not the A/C. I don't want anyone to have flooded carpeting.

Thank you Scotty I do have a leak in my car and I will try to steps that you suggested to find the leak
Hey Scotty, interesting question here, I find the same exact question on the internet almost everyday, but I want your answer on witch engine is overall better the 2JZ-GTE or the RB26-DETT
Fantastic. I have water coming in my Volvo c30 at the top of the drivers side pillar. I will clear the sunroof drain. Hopefully that's it.
Rev up your ultrasonic devices! Happy birthday Scotty!
You only do it if you think your wife or girlfriend is pregnant.
Another quality informative video. Thankyou, and happy birthday.
Greetings from Malaysia Scotty. It works! Thank you for the tips!
Scotty I love the pictures in the background thank you for the laughs love the channel
And HAPPY BIRTHDAY SCOTTY YOU CANT RETIRE!!!!!!
Our Ford F-150 back seat headrests were soaked with water after rain. Thought it was window and turned out we had a very small crack in the third brake light. We replaced it and never had any issues since.
Scotty should be training the next generation of mechanics
Happy B-Day Scotty! 🎉🎂 Thank you for all the free advice and information. 😊
My ford had leaky headlight enclosures, I drilled a little 1/16th hole in the bottom to keep them drained.
Not a bad idea but those lense housings can crack easily.
Ford! Ha! Now that's a joke!
Happy B-Day. I open the driver door today after its been raining for past 2 days and found 3" deep paddle of water sitting in my car. Then I go back home and opened TH-cam and here's your video waiting for me to watch and find out whats going on.
68 and working very day! Farming and appraisals. 3rd brake light on Dodge pickups...leaks into cab. Expensive fix....or do it yourself cheap
Hey Scotty, Everyone a trick I do for the sunroof drains is warm soapy water in a spray bottle and the largest gauge weedeater string .
1st clean all debris from the sunroof drain pan area
Spray a little of the warm soapy water into the drain holes using a length of weed eater string gently work it back and forth back and forth until you get all the way down and it will exit the car just in front of the door from the bottom of the fender.
If the holes are really dirty you'll notice as you pull the string out it'll be black and nasty that's the way it is an undercover the woods over here just east of you in Arkansas we have lots of pine trees sweet gum trees and oak trees drop all manner of organic material on our car
It may take several patient trip of soapy water running the weed eater string into the drain hole to get them completely clear once the string extends through the bottom of the car through the drains always run a little bit of warm soapy water in a spray bottle I use a garden sprayer 2-gallon garden sprayer you can use a regular spray bottle.
Hidden obvious protip that i love from you scotty. Park your car in the shade!!!!
Wow! this is really helpful. Thank you Scotty.
