How a Sunroof Works

  • Here's how the sunroof/moonroof mechanism works to allow sunlight into your car's interior.
The sunroof is a body colored metal panel on the car's roof that tilts. A moonroof is a transparent window located on a car's roof that tilts and retracts into the car's body. It allows the entry of light into the cabin, an open air feeling when retracted and the ventilation of air when tilted.
The sunroof/moonroof is comprised of the tracks, water channels and tubes, an electric motor with a gear train, spiral cables and a 3-bar linkage that allows the sliding and tilting of the roof into the car's body.
This video shows the process of removing the headliner to access the sunroof and the full disassembly of each component to see what's inside and how it works. Vehicles with failed, broken, leaky or stuck sunroofs require a similar amount of work to be performed to access failed components, often with exorbitant labor costs due to the way it is compactly packaged.
The vehicle in this video was a 2004 Infiniti G35 sedan.

I do have one question that wasnt entirely clear. If somehow, the 2 cables become out of sync, not allowing your sunroof to close properly, (glass twisted) how does one go about getting it sit in its proper placement to function properly. Do you remove the gear on the motor that moves both sides, postion the glass manually and return the gear?

I opened our sun roof for the first time this year. When I tried to close it stopped and reversed to the fully open position. I eventually closed it by pressing the switch momentarily at 1/2 second intervals until it returned to the closed position. Good thing it didn't start to rain. I will look at it again on the next sunny day. When we bought this previously owned vehicule they sold us a service contract that would pay for any major repairs. The roof has been problematic since we got it. We asked for an estimate but the insurance company would not pay for it because it required the remplacement of the tracks which they considered a wear and tear thing like brakes. I thought it could be some sort of sensor or cpu/logic thing. We have a Jeep Renegade 2015.Thanks for the video. It's good to know the components and mechanics that are involved. I'll try that reset thing.

Stellar job on video. You know your sunroofs man!
I have a 2003 Montero Limited. My sunroof stuck fully open 3 years ago. Opened fine and then it wouldn't budge to close a couple of hours later. I had one person pull on the glass as I cycled the button on and off because it would move about 1/2" at a time that way, but only if a person tugged forward on the glass as I switched the switch on and off in forward position. So I got it 98% closed, but it doesn't go upward and entirely seal fully closed. That was 3 years ago.
What do you think the problem is?

I'm old enough to remember when "sunroof" specifically meant only the one that flips up to vent (or often can be removed entirely on a sunny day), and "moonroof" meant one that slid into the roof.

      @speedkar99  5 ปีที่แล้ว

Yep! I clarified that in the description. It's still often referred to as a Sunroof in marketing

Only ONE Question: WHY do you have ONLY 183 comments? Your presentation was perfect in Information. Your Description of the System was flawless in its content. Yet you have idiots commenting on your Video (such as "Toothbrush: Am fixing cars today,...") that totally missed the point. Perhaps it could have been a bit 'compact' in information, but I did appreciate it, anyway. Thanks, again, for so much effort.

Thank You for making this video and taking the time to tear & explain each part in detail, exactly what I was needing to see. I did have a couple of questions if you happen to see this comment. I have a 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP with moonroof and it will raise up in the vent position and sometimes will retract but not all the way and also I will do the same thing when trying to close it, so thank you for showing in this video how it can be closed manually. Are there any parts or pieces of plastic that can break off in the track that would cause this or should I troubleshoot the switch and motor first for weak or failing parts? I keep the track and drains clean, but have not been able to as much since I have been having the issue opening and closing. (By the way a trick someone taught me that you may already know to clean the drains all the way down the pillars on each front corner is to use heavy duty weed eater string.)
Also my moon roof does not retract into the roof itself it actually raises up and goes backwards above the roof at an angle when open, which brings me to my second question is this kind of sun/moon roof the same type of design and mechanisms as you described in this video or is it different?

My 94 camry roof stopped sliding as I drove. It tilts but I hear a gear slipping. And the slider switch is tilting the window. I tried reset by turning on ignition then holding tilt close, but didn't help.
    Any ideas?

I was breaking my head trying to figure out how the sunroof worked for our GMC Acadia. It's the same mechanism. Thanks and thumbs up for the great video! I made an stupid mistake and while having things on the roof tried to open it. It got stuck from one side and it misaligned. Managed to "force" it to align it again, but now it only opens half the way, while the "tilt" function also mid-opens the sunroof. I believe, while forcing the alignment, it probably moved internally to other position. So maybe, the mechanism is physically overlapped (springs/gears) or the computer "thinks" it's in another position. Any suggestions of how to try and align it again without tearing the whole roof? Thanks in advance!

Speedkar99 i have a great idea for a video. Its something many of us would love to watch if you made it. Most of us who know cars know quite a bit about the mechanical side of things but are sorely lacking on the electrical side. Myself included, being a mech engineer i didn’t really take an interest in electrical things until it was time to understand the automobile’s electrical system. Please do detailed videos in 3-4 parts. Covering basics, then a video including circuit diagrams completely explained then a video(s) showing how the car is wired and what wire and component is identified how. I’ve been an avid viewer of your channel in these past 6 months and you’re the only one i expect to cover all bases. Please consider this. Regards

Brilliant presentation of the sliding sunroof mechanism👍🏻
This stresses the importance and differences of good lubrication.
Grease everywhere except on the wormgear with the foam core to distribute lube onto motor output gear... my new German sunroof is super clunky and frame broke at 15kMi, I am keeping an ear open to diagnose where the cheap grease has evaporated/sublimated
