My blockage was much further down in the tube. I had been warned by the Ford dealer that I shouldn't use more than about 20 to 30 psi air to blow it out. Didn't work! I put a #10 wire about 3' to 4' down the tube and found the blockage, but couldn't clear it. Finally, I put 40# of air on the gage and was able to blow the crud out of the tube. Now the drains run clear and sound like the video as they drain. Thanks for putting me on the right track.
As it turns out, the 40# of air blew the tube off the nipple coming out of the fixture. I had to disassemble the headliner to get to the tube. Blew the tube out and got good flow, reattached the tube to the nipple, and she now drains just fine. This was on driver's side only. Passenger side worked OK without blowing the tube off the nipple.
After unclogging the sunroof drains on my 2014 Sonic, I noticed that they still were draining slowly. So, I come up with the idea of pouring Hydrogen Peroxide into them and re-gouging the drains once more. Bubble, bubble, no more trouble.
Oh man! Ty so much for posting this! I didn't know about the drain holes....super cheap fix...I actually used a baby nose sucker to help flush it out...no more leak woohoo!
Thank you for another great TH-cam vid. I never had this problem or even ever heard of it before. I decided to TH-cam it. Took me 5 minutes and the problem got solved. I was thinking Im going to have to take my car to the body shop… Good thing I didn’t…. Thanks again!
the best way to do this clearing of the drains is to pour a solution of vinegar and hot water down the portholes and let them set up for about an hour then take hot water and pour them and they will be spotless, trust me putting a wire down those tubes is not a good idea especially if they are dry rotted you will have more of a nightmare than it is worth just pour the vinegar solution down and it clears it incredibly quick do this once a year and you will never have a problem
My Honda van is leaking somewhere as well. I opened up the sunroof and poured 16 oz of vinegar into the front drain of the sunroof and I could hear the driver side hole gurgling. Going to wait about 1 hour then pour some warm water to flush out the vinegar. If this doesn't work I can then move to the gasket running the length of the car and caulk that area.
OMG this makes so much sense! I don't even really use my sunroof. When it rained today it was pouring in on me. My driveway is under trees, and it is really goopy around my sunroof. Going to do this when it stops raining! Thanks 😊
You sir are a godsend! I Have the 2004 Explorer XLT. Thank You so much! I was literally going bonkers it was leaking exactly as in your video from drivers side and even from the front center courtesy light switches located up front. Thank You again, Great video very detailed and to the point!
Would you replace your whole light fixture if your light went out ? or would you just buy a new light bulb ? Of course the mechanic is going to tell you that, and make a quick $ 700.00.
It helps me out big time. I have a Mercury mountaineer and the sun roof just started to leak and I thought it was the gasket .. thank you for sharing.. I thought for sure it was going to cost me Big
I would check and make sure the water is draining all the way out to the ground. It should come out the bottom of the wheel well area behind the tire splash area. You can open the drain holes but if the tubes that Carry the water down the w/shield post to the ground outside are cracked, broken, off altogether the water will still get in the cab area.
I thought my Ford explorer had a bad seal until I looked at it a little closer. I saw these side channels and thought, humm, I better look this up on you tube. Gee, you are a great guy! I love shared information. In my Ford book there is nothing, absolutely nothing about this in there. But, of course Ford would rather you bring it in and spend mega $$$ for them to blow out the tubes. My problem showed up after my windshield was replaced. I believe they have some crunched up glass down in my tubes. I might vacuum mine first but at least you helped me know where to look. Thank you!
Hi ! I don't have any leaking problems around the sunroof, but I'm glad I saw your video because I didn't know any of those details and I can go up there now and make sure that it is clean so that there's no future possibility of leaking. I got this used vehicle about a year ago and I'm learning of different things I can do to keep it functioning as best as possible. The vehicle is a 2004 Ford Explorer V8. It does have a little leak in the rear drivers cargo window and I'm still having to investigate how to fix that. They probably had a wreck and replaced the glass but somehow it still leaks.
The stiffest string trimmer line available is about the most rigid thing I'd push down the sunroof drains because you risk pushing the drain hose off the sunroof tray drain fitting hidden under the headliner. Also, compressed air could do the same thing or, fail to dislodge an obstruction and burst the sunroof drain hose somewhere you cant see it.
Thank you very much!!! I did what you said, found the holes and got an old 3-foot iphone charger cord and shoved it in there. I had to do this out in the rain because it is supposed to rain for the next 3 or 4 days and my passenger and driver's floor mats and carpet are soaked. I could see the small pieces of decaying twigs and black muck. Thank you for your wonderful video.
Thanks Bro! Very helpful video, if for no other reason than to have just taken the mystery out of it! It took me 10 minutes including the mobilization time! I used an old speedo cable by the way, perfect tool for the job.
Great info. Wasn't sure where my leak was coming from. I had water leaking all over me and the floor in a bad downfall. Didn't realize I could access the drain holes so easily. I agree that you should use caution when sticking stiff wire in the holes. I would recommend using a combination of that and some sort of liquid cleaning solution. It seems that in most cases its just some small debris towards the top. Would definitely not want to make the problem worse....!
Thanks for video post. My HYUNDAI SANTA FE is leaking at very same spot as your explorer. When the snow melts off my sunroof i will be checking my drain/seals/etc. I feel your pain, it's so annoying having the water dripping on your lap. lol
Oooo man I pray to God that this is my problem I have a Ford Flex 2009 and boy do I get water 💦 4 year ago same thing happened took it to the dealer it was under warranty no more warranty I’m going to try this this weekend thank you so much and God bless
Thank You from all the way Down Under. I used an old USB cable. About a meter long. It worked perfectly. Be sure to clean up around the area with a chamois. Before, during and after. It makes a difference.
I always vacuum the tube out instead of using compressed air. Regular shop or house vac, then take a small rubber tube and add it to the end of the vacuum hose and cover with your hand. Most of the debri is right there at the top. Vacuum it out, then take a cup of water and put it in the drip pan, verify it comes out the bottom.
There was water pouring in to my 01 EB Expedition from the visor screws. I pulled the sunroof drain tubes and blew them out with my compressor. Now the leaks have stopped. Thank you for the tip!
Very good repair, and video. I have an 01 Olds Aurora, that I love and it seems to be leaking from the sunroof where it closes to meet the frame, or it's leaks from the outside, at top corner of passenger window ? I'm not sure where the water is getting in ? but I see the cloth on the slider underneath the sunroof glass is starting to sag, and also getting water on the passenger floor, after heavy rain. What would you do ? test by pouring water on different areas and look for leaks ? or maybe just seal off the whole sunroof on surface of roof ? I don't open the sunroof glass ever, only pull back the slider and use the sunroof as a window. I've also seen guys use weed wacker line, and attach it to a drill and put it down the sunroof drain holes, and it seems to work. I'd prefer not to seal my whole surface of my sunroof, even though I don't use it, as it will look not that good. What would be your suggestion ? I guess you'd say, follow my video, and I will
If the water can't get through the hose, I think that could also mean there is a break in some kind of seal at a different spot. Did you check that or was the issue resolved? I mean if water get up on the lining there is moisture inside and rust can form
Issue was resolved. But in a down poor that seal has to NOT leak at all. If its dry or look like its shrinking...then replace it. The out side seal is designed to keep 98% of the water out.
Thanks for your video. It was very informative. I have a 2003 VW Beetle with an electric sunroof. I have water on the floor in the front (both sides), on the rear seat, the headliner near the dome lights on both sides, and the carpet in the trunk (boot). Do you think I have the same problem as yours?! If yes, why the headliner is wet near the dome lights Could it be that there may be more than two drainage tube(hole) around the sunroof?! I also have also another problem. My speedometer and Odometer quit working. Could that also be tied to the water drainage issue?
Thanks for clear video and instructions. But in my case my Benz 211still driping water despite all drain holes r clear .. i can see lot of water around sunshade lights ..how to fix it
I had this same problem on my caliber and i was sticking lawn snipper wire down it which helped alittle bit. But how i fixed it was finding the end of the drain and spraying air through it. A problem since i bought the car fixed in minutes lol.a
Definitely been looking for ways to fix this type of leaking in my '04 Explorer....gonna try it tomorrow. I really appreciate this video, sir. It was really helpful. Thanks for sharing your wisdom.
your video is just amazing, helped a lot. I wanna see if you could help or find out, you know when the water drains, where does the water go, because in my car when the water drains it goes to the floor and wets the floor in my car, where is the water supposed to go? thanks you!
Mine does the same. The floor in my backseat is drenched. My drainage hoses from my sunroof have popped out so the water was just dripping onto the floor. I dont know about other cars but my 05 G6 has a hole where the front doors open and it drains from there and in the back it drains from under the trunk.
My 2020 Tundra is new and garaged kept. Poured water on the drain tube and drained right away. I think the tube either has a hole or is not attached because when I pour water it leaks inside. What do you think?
We are dealing with a 2014 ram leaking and 2006 ram. On these trucks, the water drips from the a pillar handle and it’s also running to the back corner headliner passenger side. Also had issue with 99 grand Cherokee Limited or a 2003 grand Cherokee Laredo it leaked onto the driver seat and put a large puddle of water on the driver side floor, we had to drill a hole through the floor to drain the water. The hose going through the floor appear to be clogged at the very bottom, where it exits the vehicle cleaned at this point and leak seems good running a wire from the top was not possible on the grand Cherokee. Still looking for advice on the ram trucks as the video I saw focused on a spring hole which could be the problem instead of the drain tube.
This vid gave me a great idea since i dont bave a big boy compressor.. small air pump with hose attached. With a smaller hose that fit into the bigger one (small vaccum line. on my wrecked truck). Electrical tape to make the seal. And booom perfect
I just inserted a long piece of strong weed eater String Vacuumed with Stanley shop vac and I didn't have a blower for tires so I used the exhaust part of Stanley's shop vac to blow air in the holes That worked but after TH-cam uploaders showed me where. So thank you we just had a cat 1 hurricane dead center us.
It pays to do research first. I have taken my Lincoln Navigator to the shop twice to get the sunroof drained. Now they say I need to replace the rubber around the sunroof. After watching this video, I could have cleaned it out myself. Thanks for the video.
Leaking on the drivers side . I cleaned it out but I don’t think i got it all as it still leaks after a heavy rain. I’ll keep at it until i hear the suction sound!!
2015 outback...i checked the drains...It's probably not the sunroof it's probably the mounting bolts for the roof rack. The rubber they put under it as it as it comes to the front of the car curls up and no longer seals water from being blown backward into the faulty seals around the bolts. put some silicone under the rubber in front and hold it down with some weights if you don't like the way it looks standing up
Yep, dealing with that now on my "08 Escape, Runs good, I'm gonna replace it, I just sopped out more than an inch of rain today, in a bucket . both sides. Tired of it, Can't seem to fins anyone to fix it. I'm a femal;e and no fix it skills , Everytime I try I just make it worse.
Blessing Chirara Nahhh... I had 3 cars with sunroofs, never an issue. This car is a 2003 and finally had a blockage as a car that lives outdoors. That's GREAT return on a perfect car. Totally worth it.
I am having problems with a 2007 Toyota Matrix. Like your vehicle I have the amazing moon roof and sunroof combination, which I hardly ever use. A friend that used to work on cars (Actually was a certified mechanic) told me he thinks from looking and touching it that the rubber seal or gasket is old and dried out and the rain is seeping thru tiny cracks. He advised me to buy some black sealant and get some painter's tape and rebuild the rubber. But I am going to check for clogged passages and I purchased some Goop Max on clearance and it's not white, but clear, so I think it'll work on black. It's a special formula for outdoor gear, so hopefully.... it will do the job. I live in Florida and the sun hits my car all day burning the paint, drying out the rubber and fading the interior or I can park under a tree and then it gets covered in crap. Next time, no glass roofs.
I know. I use to live in fort lauderdale hoter than the sun in the summer! Shit dries out fast there. If your seal is not in to bad shape you can use Vaseline. But try and look at the drain tubes and see if there clogged.
Okay, I have an old jar we used for removing ticks off our golden retriever, I have more than half left. I might as well treat the rest of the rubber around the car to prevent drying out. Thanks for the help.
I actually have a 2002 Toyota Sequoia Limited v8... 😆 😆 Finished washing the truck today, got in drove around the traffic circle and got splooooshed with water 😂😂😂... I'll give this a try definitely, hopefully it isn't the weather seal that needs replacing!
Hey.. i am from India and i own a chevy cruze ltz 2012 . Recently i faced same problem with sunroof because water is dripping from roof . I tried all the ways that you have spoken about .. after doing that it was good there se no more dripping from roof but suddenly it start dripping all over the cabin from sun visor , pillors and now i don't know what to do please help me with this problem
Can you see all 4 drain hoses from out the bottom of your car? Would that help to know if they are actually in the right place to drain out,and not in the interior once you cleared it from debris? Someone please lmk,my Son's car is leaking in the back drivers side and now coming into the front Drivers side, spring is come by on central NY with that comes alot of rain! Any ideas????
I wouldn't recommend putting something like that in the drain tube. You could rip it pop it off from the end. Ps did you check near the wheel well if that debrie came out, otherwise you just stuffed Futher into the hose
@@FixingWithPassion all seal can leak over time. It rubber and rubber ages and disintegrates. I would be more scary of punching holes in the tube with that metal
great video set helped me know how to get the ceiling of maxima loose to re connect tube actually disconnected from driver side drain on sunrroof front . thanx
Hi. So I had what seems the same problem on my 2013 F-150 and I cleared those tubes as good as I could and then I didn’t take the risk to see if it worked since I knew more rainy days were coming so I duct taped the sunroof edges. Left the truck all nice and dry, found it soaking wet in the morning. I dont understand where the water is going through. This is happening on the driver side and the antenna is on the passenger side... Just had my windshield changed few days ago and took it back to them to have it checked, they said the windshield is sealed just fine. Any ideas?
so I tried using everything plastic sting a hanger a larger wire.... Until I had the genius idea to use an HDMI cord. I cut one end into a point and boom unclogged lol
By the way Nathan, I am considering ordering a cigarette lighter from Amazon, if I don't find it cheaper somewhere. They are asking $27 for the front console cigarette lighter. If you have a special number so you can get credit, I don't mind ordering it and placing your number so you would get credit.

Blew the tube out and got good flow, reattached the tube to the nipple, and she now drains just fine. This was on driver's side only. Passenger side worked OK without blowing the tube off the nipple.
Nice... hopefully no more leaks.
I used a roll of heavy weed-eater plastic cord. Stiff enough to push out the clog, flexible enough to get around the corners in the drain tube.
After unclogging the sunroof drains on my 2014 Sonic, I noticed that they still were draining slowly. So, I come up with the idea of pouring Hydrogen Peroxide into them and re-gouging the drains once more. Bubble, bubble, no more trouble.
very good idea, and I may try that peroxide out.

@@FixingWithPassion it was dripping in my car yesterday so bad when raining lol
What kind of rod is sufficient ?
Thank you! It worked for my sequoia!
Nice!~
It pays to do research first. I have taken my Lincoln Navigator to the shop twice to get the sunroof drained. Now they say I need to replace the rubber around the sunroof.
After watching this video, I could have cleaned it out myself. Thanks for the video.
The moonroof on my 2001 Cougar I think is the same as yours. It also leaks into the inside. I guess that I will have to do the same thing for my car.
have fun...lol
Leaking on the drivers side . I cleaned it out but I don’t think i got it all as it still leaks after a heavy rain. I’ll keep at it until i hear the suction sound!!
What do you do if it gets to the edges around the main sunroof?
Seal
@@FixingWithPassion what sealer would you recommend the most?
Where can I buy the hose to push down in there
Great video, thank you!
There are 2 hole or 4 holes back an front? ? ?
2015 outback...i checked the drains...It's probably not the sunroof it's probably the mounting bolts for the roof rack. The rubber they put under it as it as it comes to the front of the car curls up and no longer seals water from being blown backward into the faulty seals around the bolts. put some silicone under the rubber in front and hold it down with some weights if you don't like the way it looks standing up
Yea true words!
Best is to avoid vehicles with sunroofs. The perceived benefits are not worth the headaches.

Nahhh...
I had 3 cars with sunroofs, never an issue.
This car is a 2003 and finally had a blockage as a car that lives outdoors.
That's GREAT return on a perfect car.
Totally worth it.
Weed wacker line works good
I am having problems with a 2007 Toyota Matrix.
Happy FIXING!
I ask for a 2005 xlt ford explorer and Google show 2000 ford expectadion?
Thanks for the video! I think this will help 🙂
Thank you..I appreciate your help...
Very good video👍
Nice!
Hey.. i am from India and i own a chevy cruze ltz 2012 . Recently i faced same problem with sunroof because water is dripping from roof . I tried all the ways that you have spoken about .. after doing that it was good there se no more dripping from roof but suddenly it start dripping all over the cabin from sun visor , pillors and now i don't know what to do please help me with this problem
Thank you so much!
Thanks bro
Wow!!
Kind of Car?
@@FixingWithPassion Dodge Caliber
@@LisaLisa-mx3hq It almost impossible to the the hoses underneath. Stick a wire down the drain or weed eater string. It should unplug it.
Great video...weed eater string works great too!
Tried it thanx
I gotta try this. Thks!
Cooll!~
I wouldn't recommend putting something like that in the drain tube. You could rip it pop it off from the end. Ps did you check near the wheel well if that debrie came out, otherwise you just stuffed Futher into the hose
It helps but the seal on the sliding roof can not leak at all. That seal was designed for that job.
@@FixingWithPassion all seal can leak over time. It rubber and rubber ages and disintegrates. I would be more scary of punching holes in the tube with that metal
Watching it at 2:00am , even i don't have a car.
Nice!
Thanks for posting
great video set helped me know how to get the ceiling of maxima loose to re connect tube actually disconnected from driver side drain on sunrroof front . thanx
That's great!
Thank you Probably be similar on my 2008 TOYOTA 4 Runner
Any ideas?
Bad sun roof seal.
Nathan Rohrbough thank you for the reply, it turned out to be the new windshield sealing, and Safelite fixed their mistake.
Great info.
Thank you brother
Every one who does a DIY video on sun roof drains miraculously owns an air compressor.
I got mine for $40
@@FixingWithPassion - not bad - sounds like Harbor Freight.
Thanks a lot for this information, very useful
Great!~
THANK YOU !!!!!!!!!!!
Nice!!
Great video, it helped me a lot. Thank you!
so I tried using everything plastic sting a hanger a larger wire.... Until I had the genius idea to use an HDMI cord. I cut one end into a point and boom unclogged lol
Thank you
MAN THANKS FOR THIS VIDEO! I WAS LOSING MY🤬 MIND, BECAUSE ONLY WHEN IT RAINS VERY HARD I WOULD GET WATER DRIPPING IN MY MONTE CARLO.... 👍5⭐
Nice!
By the way Nathan, I am considering ordering a cigarette lighter from Amazon, if I don't find it cheaper somewhere. They are asking $27 for the front console cigarette lighter. If you have a special number so you can get credit, I don't mind ordering it and placing your number so you would get credit.
thank i it work for my expedition 👍🏼
🌸solo traveler thanks YOUUUUUU🌸
Damn, I have an 01 f150 leaking at the passenger side sun visor but don't have a sunroof
DO YOU UNCLOG SUNROOF ON THE SIDE AS A PART TIME INCOME? ARE YOU IN MISSOUR? ( ST. LOUIS)
Yea I do.
