Thank you for making the Ultimate Rockets Team. This is my favorite of your Ultimate team series and have been looking forward to watching the Houston Rockets. I actually listened to this three times on my long drive to work.
As a lifetime Rockets fan, you did a stellar job researching this team, i was worried you'd have some terrible lineup, in comparison to other teams in this series with modern spacing concepts, like Harden, T-Mac, Drexler, Hakeem, and Moses. But no you actually made a genuine modern lineup full of the greatest Rockets of all time, only change id make is swapping CP3 and Franchise but that's more of personal bias against Franchise 😅
Can't argue with the frontcourt, but Murphy & Harden in the backcourt does not work. They are both huge liabilities on defense and similarly need to carry the ball most of the time on offense. T-Mac is not worth much on defense either, so you're heavily relying on your twin towers. Doesn't cut it against almost all All-Time teams.
The honorable mentions always intrigue me- there really wasn’t much outside of the top 13, but the 13 itself is absolutely phenomenal. Definitely a top three seed in the west.
I know what you’re saying, I’m a Houstonian and if I had to pick 3 best Honorable Mentions it’s hard. Right now I have Sleepy Floyd, Sam Cassell, Otis Thorpe.
This team is loaded. I've previously felt that the Rockets would be a 2-4 seed in the ultimate west and I stand by that. I'll wait to see what the Spurs and Warriors teams look like before deciding between them but I've felt all along they were 2-4 with the Lakers being 1. This Rockets team has an embarrassment of riches in the paint and on the block in all 3 phases, offense, defense, and rebounding. Hakeem is the 2nd best defensive center of all time behind only Boston's Bill Russell. And his offensive game was the most complete of any big man ever. With Hakeem, Sampson, Malone, and Hayes, not only do you lots of options for scoring in the paint and for rim protection on the other any, but you also have the best rebounding quartet of any team in this series. This team would MURDER their opponents in the points in the paint category with their combination of interior scoring skills and rim protection. As for the guards, Harden and Mcgrady are both multi time scoring champions and Drexler is extremely underrated as in his prime he was unstoppable as the great drivers and slashers of his era who also had 3 point range. Sampson and Olajuwon would also benefit from Harden's passing skills as Harden is also a 2 time assist champion. I would make Paul my starting point guard. With Harden, Mcgrady, Sampson, and Olajuwon on the floor, I'd rather have a pass first point guard. Perimeter defense is the biggest weakness of this team holistically and Paul is an all time great defensive point guard as well. I'd move CP3 into the starting lineup, bring Murphy off the bench, and make Francis a rotation player. It really puts in perspective how loaded this team is in the frontcourt that CHARLES BARKLEY is an end of the bench guy. This team would win at least one playoff series and maybe two. Man, this team is totally awesome baby!
Hey Jonny why would you not put Hakeem at the 4 and run Moses at the 5? Hakeem was agile enough to be around the perimeter and Moses could grab rebounds on both offense and defense. Sampson was good but why him over a MVP who single handily carried his team to the NBA finals in 82?
I would’ve personally put Hakeem at the 4 and Moses at the 5, I think Hakeem would fair quite well in the power forward position, entertaining video as always thoufh
6:27 first of all that was disgusting by Clyde drexler old men destroyed him and you could just see it on his face after like that old man face like please young blood. I've been doing this for 15 plus years... The same time man that was great work saying his stats exactly at the end he capped it off with that dunk in that guy's face. You put it together beautifully!
I think it would be better if there's no duplicate players in every team. Only one team for each player. Murphy Harden T-Mac Sampson Hakeem Alston Francis Battier Scola Yao Brooks Elie Robert Reid REMOVE: Drexler (Blazers) Artest (Pacers) Hayes (Bullets/Wizards) CP3 (Clippers) Barkley (Suns)
ralph sampson should be moved to honorable mention. moses malone replaces him on team 1, and ming replaces malone on team two. replacing ming in rotational would be mutombo, horry or john lucas. i make these changes because overall despite his physical gifts, he's a bit of a cry baby and a big game loser.
Wow, that is an incredible starting 5. Harden and T-Mac together would be amazing but adding Hakeem, Sampson, and Murphy together makes them even more amazing. The bench is so deep too. Francis and Drexler would be an incredible backcourt. Hayes, Artest, and Malone would be an incredibly difficult frontcourt to score on and rebound against. Ditto for Hakeem and Sampson. This team is so deep. Yao, CP3, and Barkley are some of the better 3rd string players in this series. This team is superb. Awesome video :) Have a nice weekend!
I would personaly switch Sampson for Malone in the starting lineup. Then I would put Horry insted of Yao in the team (there are still many big manwithout him). Horry could be the joker option to put on a Forward position in the money time to get a clutch shot opportunity, as he used to do many times.
Rockets Westbrook would be a tremendous addition off the bench - especially with big spacers like Yao Ming on the floor to clear up the paint for him. His time in Houston should not be forgotten.
@@TheIcemanthomas yes but Westbrook's numbers during his Houston stretch at a point were downright great. He shot more efficiently than ever while there (barring this season), averaging 27/8/7 for the season, and at least 31/10/10 for a stretch I recall.
Houston Rockets a championship Team The Dream, The Bread, Calvin Murphy underrated, Ralph Samson, Yao Ming, The Chairman of the Boards, The Franchise, Clyde the Glide, Sir Charles, t Mac, Elvin Hayes, Ron Arrest defense, plus CP3.
James Harden Clyde Drexler Tracy McGrady Moses Malone Hakeem Olajuwon Calvin Murphy Steve Francis Rudy Tomjanovich Elvin Hayes Yao Ming Otis Thorpe Robert Reid Kenny Smith
I never saw Calvin Murphy play in real time but if he is a scoring point guard that looks for his own shot, than he shouldn't be the starting point guard on a talent rich All-Time Team James Harden is my starting point guard, as he is a big guard with few offensive weaknesses as he has lead the league in assists in multiple seasons Tracy McGrady is my starting off guard as he has the best perimeter game (pull up jump shooting in half court sets & in transition) of any Rockets player and being that he became more injury prone in his Houston Rockets days, YOU WANT TO KEEP McGRADY ON THE PERIMETER SHIELDING HIM FROM AS MUCH CONTACT AS POSSIBLE MORE VISIBLE TO OFFICIATING WHERE HE WILL BENEFIT FROM "TICKY TACKY" FOUL CALLS... Clyde Drexler killed it in 1995 Playoffs Season for the Rockets at Small Forward, his full court/open court speed, durability and style of play is perfectly suited for the small forward position!
Rockets are loaded, but not correctly. Malone's rebounding cannot be relegated in minutes. Move Hakeem to 4 and Moses to 5. Olajuwon, Moses, Hayes, Ming, and Sampson provide so much inside scoring that it'll open up the 3pt shot. And Murphy would bully Hardin off of the team.... Seriously. Hardin is not hard.... Murphy would thrash him off court and Hardin would leave the team. Neither would Olajuwon, Rudy T, Chuck, nor Moses take Hardin's crap. Getting Stevie Franchise, Chuck, Artest, and Hayes to co-exist may be difcult. You still need three point shooting.... Elie or Battier (great teammate), Horry, Reid.... or even go for Bryce Drew, Brent Price, or Scott Brooks.
Hakeem Olajuwon, Ralph Sampson, Moses Malone, and Yao Ming… this is ridiculous if you’re an opposing Guard or a Wing trying to drive into the paint against this group. With the depth in the middle, the Quadruple Towers will have the Liberty of being as physical as they want to be. Think about this… 24 Fouls to spare, 48 minutes of Hall of Fame Twin Towers Talent to play with any combination of the four. On Offense, Pick-and-Roll and Lob City galore. On Defense, biggest wall since the Steel Curtain of the 1970’s Pittsburgh Steelers in the NFL. I’m sorry, but other than the Lakers I don’t see anyone else who can make a deep run in the Western Conference. And yes, this includes San Antonio with David Robinson and Tim Duncan.
Elvin Hayes should be the starting PF. He was better than Sampson. His first four seasons with the Rockets he averaged 27.4 PPG and 16.3 RPG before being traded to the Bullets.
Yikes, this team has a lot of scary lineups. Murphy, Yao, Hakeem, Ralph Sampson and Stevie Franchise in the middle of a 3rd quarter would look absolutely ridiculous. Or just go all size and have TMac and Drexler take the back court.
You know Houston’s big lineup is OP when the likes of Dwight Howard and Rudy Tomjanovic aren’t even mentioned (both hall of fame centre material), but also you should consider Russ had 27, 7 and 8 on pretty good efficiency that year in which he was an all star (though it was the covid/bubble and playing small ball trading the rebound champ calibre Clint Capela was dumb imo, ruining their playoff hopes). I would put cp3 either in the starting slot, as he is THE point god for a reason and is a great facilitator, or id play to the rockets strengths with a big ball lineup (harden, tmac, drexler and both Moses+hakeem playing interchangeable 4/5 cause they both have high post/ midrange gravity and in an all time matchup, most players won’t be from the 3pt heavy era of late, so obnoxious inside presence and height is welcome, especially with a cp3 sixth man facilitator and Elvin, Yao and Ralph ready to hop in and keep the energy high. Pure size and scoring at all 3 levels
The list is great, but I, personally, would put Rudy tomjanovich over Barkley. Definitely not a better player, but a much better rocket if that makes any sense.
I would start moses over Sampson. And Paul over murphy. You can't start 2 matadors in the backcourt. Houston barkley wasn't great, or required on this team, I would give his spot to horry or reed.
Got to pause this shit almost immediately. Horry is the best SF The Rockets ever had and it's just bullshit ass cheating to plug two SG's in and one of them not being Drexler, who, is the second best SG in the history of basketball accounting for era, hops, defense, and clutch....Wtf happened to basketball. Side note, falling down on the three point line used to merit a technical and the "euro step" is/was a travel.
No real floor general to support Hakeem in the starters, move Harden to rotation, switch Calvin to SG and bring out CP3 as starter PG. I don't trust Sampson's durability, give me Malone as starter PF instead, with Yao Ming as second string C and Sampson as a rotation player.
This is maybe the most impressive team to date. I probably wouldn't have Harden in the starting lineup, as he's going to command the ball and destroy chemistry by jacking up shots all the time. This team has enough offense already, and is not in need of his poor efficiency and lack of defense on the perimeter. I'd also swap Malone and Samson because I want Malone on the floor for more of the game. He absolutely dominated Kareem... He was basically Kareem's Kryptonite. In fact, I may move Hakeem to the 4 and play Malone at 5.
@@DiscGolfLeagueMVPsorry, I don't use Twitter. Never have. Harden is a great player, but he doesn't deserve to be on this starting lineup with all these team players. Although I would guess if he is, Malone and Hakeem would make sure he understands it's their team.
i think clyde should be starting tbh. slide murphy to the bench, put harden at point, clyde at the 2. personally also think rudy should be over steve. run a bench lineup of: murphy, artest, rudy, elvin and malone. but that's jus me lol absolutely great video/series
@jonnyarnett, you put Malone and Olajuwon in the same starting lineup, I think it’s even better. I mean, look at their two championship seasons, in the 90’s. The first one, the only real star was Olajuwon. The rest were role players.
Now this is a team that will make serious noise. The Spurs are the other team I root for besides Philly, and even I have to admit this Rockets team is better. There are so many rotations you can do with this squad that it's arguable Elvin Hayes should start at the 4. Or even Moses to maximize rebounding and have a 99 overall PF. That's what I do sometimes. Even the guards and wings are just fantastic scorers (even if their most recent MVP winner is a terrible winner for the time imo), so it's not going to be easy to guard them whatsoever. Even their defense is solid to the point where it can compete against other all-time offenses. The only issues with the Rockets are like you said, health, and the fact that 2 of the biggest favorites in the Lakers and Warriors are in their conference. However, I think the Rockets can beat one of them, maybe even both if the cards play right. But hey, those are my thoughts. See you for the winningest Texas team in the Spurs.
great video, Rocket homer here. I think you have to put Hakeem at the 4 and play him at the same time with Moses. This would allow you to bring in Yao earlier and when you need some good efficient down low points off the bench, and Sampson as a backup and playing limited minutes on his knees. Also, I am not the biggest CP3 fan but I would start him or at least move him in front of Stevie Franchise. Stevie couldn't really lead a team and Calvin was instant offense. With Harden, Tmac, Hakeem, and Moses on the floor together, I would let CP3 distribute and bring Murphy in off the bench like Vinny the microwave used to heat things up. Artest would play a good deal of minutes when defense was needed, and I agree with the post below that Rudy T should be in here instead of Barkley or E Hayes. Neither were at their primes in Houston. Lots of star talent on this roster and great offensive skill. However, I don't see a lot of winners here outside of Hakeem and I don't think they would fare well against an evenly matched team.
Moses Malone had a ring with the 76'ers. Ron Artest and Elvin Hayes have a ring each and CP3 have two gold medals. Drexler have a ring and a gold medal too. What are you talking about not having a lot of winners outside of Olajuwon?
@@paquitocauli5229 You proved my point. Olympic gold doesn't mean crap without NBA championships, and EVEN when you have a ring it doesn't mean you're clutch and can perform under pressure to win. Moses only won his with DR J and a stacked team, never sniffed a chip any other year of his career. Drexler came up short in the playoffs except for riding Hakeem's leadership coattails. This is a good team, but if you put them up against the all time Lakers or Celts, I think they would fold down the stretch.
@@johnjackson229 i dont know what you're talking about. dont change parameters. you said "not a winner". i dont know why you would proceed to denigrate drexler's contribution as a merely riding olajuwon's coatails. rockets would not get past round 1 vs utah without him. your comment about gold medals not equaling nba chips, ok...be closed-minded. winning 8s winning, representing your country equates to winning too... look...just be honest, you dont know shit and you're biased. but i do agree this team would lose against all time lakers and celtics. but even then, i'll give them a puncher's chance. this team has enough hall of famers to give them a fight.

Dream, Sampson, Malone, Yao, and Chuck? Yeah good luck grabbing a rebound against 4 7fters and the Round Mound of Rebound.
Murphy
Harden
T-Mac
Sampson
Hakeem
Alston
Francis
Battier
Scola
Yao
Brooks
Elie
Robert Reid
REMOVE:
Drexler (Blazers)
Artest (Pacers)
Hayes (Bullets/Wizards)
CP3 (Clippers)
Barkley (Suns)
ralph sampson should be moved to honorable mention. moses malone replaces him on team 1, and ming replaces malone on team two. replacing ming in rotational would be mutombo, horry or john lucas. i make these changes because overall despite his physical gifts, he's a bit of a cry baby and a big game loser.
James Haren would not be a good fit with the team, and no D in that kid. Clyde and Mad Max are your 2 guards
Damn the Rockets all time was so good Kevin Martin and Mad Max was left off the list.
This team is going to the conference finals, straight 🔥
Won[t Harden just hog the ball and cause team issues?
T-Mac and Harden on the perimeter/mid range and Malone and Hakeem in the paint, yeah these guys have a chance to take down the lakers
Championship contenders. The team is packed.
No team with Harden will be contender.
I think Moses has to start!
I would have gone Yao for 2nd team center with Malone at PF and Hayes on rotation
Happy Saturday!!!
Right back at you bruv.
This team in my opinion is tge 2nd best team of the series
Harden was an unit 4-5 years ago holy shit man
Houston is a real dark horse, no-one is sweeping these guys.....
never forget Steve Francis
I think Chuck is on 3 teams.
Fuck yes! I waited for this team
🏀
I would personaly switch Sampson for Malone in the starting lineup. Then I would put Horry insted of Yao in the team (there are still many big manwithout him). Horry could be the joker option to put on a Forward position in the money time to get a clutch shot opportunity, as he used to do many times.
Rockets Westbrook would be a tremendous addition off the bench - especially with big spacers like Yao Ming on the floor to clear up the paint for him. His time in Houston should not be forgotten.
They nearly lost in the first round to a okc team with only cp3 as an allstar.
@@TheIcemanthomas yes but Westbrook's numbers during his Houston stretch at a point were downright great. He shot more efficiently than ever while there (barring this season), averaging 27/8/7 for the season, and at least 31/10/10 for a stretch I recall.
Honorable Mentions: Rudy Tomjanovich, Rodney McCray, Mike Newlin
3:36 I'm cool with Ralph Sampson's son Robert, who was playing professionally in Japan but now he's in Vietnam.
3:33
SAMPSON!!!!
YEEEEEEEEEESSSSẞSSSSSẞSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Houston Rockets a championship Team The Dream, The Bread, Calvin Murphy underrated, Ralph Samson, Yao Ming, The Chairman of the Boards, The Franchise, Clyde the Glide, Sir Charles, t Mac, Elvin Hayes, Ron Arrest defense, plus CP3.
James Harden
Clyde Drexler
Tracy McGrady
Moses Malone
Hakeem Olajuwon
Calvin Murphy
Steve Francis
Rudy Tomjanovich
Elvin Hayes
Yao Ming
Otis Thorpe
Robert Reid
Kenny Smith
I never saw Calvin Murphy play in real time but if he is a scoring point guard that looks for his own shot, than he shouldn't be the starting point guard on a talent rich All-Time Team
James Harden is my starting point guard, as he is a big guard with few offensive weaknesses as he has lead the league in assists in multiple seasons
Tracy McGrady is my starting off guard as he has the best perimeter game (pull up jump shooting in half court sets & in transition) of any Rockets player and being that he became more injury prone in his Houston Rockets days, YOU WANT TO KEEP McGRADY ON THE PERIMETER SHIELDING HIM FROM AS MUCH CONTACT AS POSSIBLE MORE VISIBLE TO OFFICIATING WHERE HE WILL BENEFIT FROM "TICKY TACKY" FOUL CALLS...
Clyde Drexler killed it in 1995 Playoffs Season for the Rockets at Small Forward, his full court/open court speed, durability and style of play is perfectly suited for the small forward position!
Hakeem is not the GOAT...but hes my GOAT....awesome player and a joy to watch
Benching Drexler and Malone is a crime for me.
But i got youre point!
Great work as always, it was a pleasure to watch!
@jonnyarnett Moses can also play as PF. Can you imagine the defensive line with Hakeem, Moses and Artest. 😮 THAT IS DEFENSE
I feel like offensive boards to take more finessing mind game.... Defensive boards take more physicality and strengths
I'd also go with Murphy since CP3 belongs to Clippers
If you do this for all NBA teams I’m expecting a collab with a 2K TH-camr. Just saying
Do the spurs next. That's an interesting one
They are next, but thats simply because I'm going in alphabetical order of the teams names. lol
I love the 13 - my only gripe is Ron Artest over Scottie Pippen...but I'm a 90's Bulls fan, so that's to be expected 😄. Love your content!
As soon as you said no harden in the starting lineup I knew you were yappin
@@sbutler3905 yeah you're right... Because his style has been so beneficial to his team's success.
@@sbutler3905 You can tell when someone's only watched Harden through Twitter memes
I'd want Clyde starting over James "I'm trying to bring some excitement to this team" Harden, hands down.
Calvin Murphy was also extremely dangerous if you started a fight with him.
Mcgrady was still in his prime in Houston, just not at his peak. You have to realize the difference.
Harden and Hakeem is a crazy good duo. Arguably the greatest offensive player ever paired with arguably the greatest defensive player ever
Sam Cassel was infinitely better than post season choker CPPee. At least you got all the front court players minus OT. Where the hell is Mad Max or Horry?
