The year that the Rockets beat the prime Magic’s Lakers to get to the finals was unbelievable… it was tough to lose to the Celtics in the finals… it was impossible to go thru TWO dynasties in the same playoffs to win the chip.
That 86 Finals was closer than people remember. The Rockets won Game 3 and were in position to win Game 4 down the stretch before Boston won it. Say the Rockets do win Game 4, then they win Game 5, they go back to Boston up 3-2. Now, I still think Boston wins, but it would’ve been interesting to see that Celtics team facing elimination by a young Rockets team.
Many people complain about Rodman, he abandoned Robinson to face a monster alone, but really, what else can you do under the anti-zone rules? If you double Olajuwon after the catch, there will be four three point shooters waiting to be open + Drexler can opt to slash to the rim, so really, at least try to survive against Olajuwon or be dominated by the entire team (which means being swept, like what happened to Orlando). Sounds crazy, but even a godlike player like Olajuwon struggled a little bit when facing really big bodies and the occasional phantom zone (the same stuff that limited Jordan against the Pistons), Ostertag gave him some trouble lol Sonics in the early 90s, etc.. Robinson (and everybody else) was so overmatched, the Spurs couldn't barely try phantom zones, it's just unfair. Maybe they could had a fighting chance if zones were allowed, still, Olajuwon would have collapsed the zone all the same and a spot up shooter will be open time and time again
