The media pushes them, talks about them, shows a lot of their images and videos, non-stop talking about them.
Then when you see them or get close to them, your mind is messed up, because all the hype was in your brain and now that it's in person, you're trying to compute it in real time.
Hence the "glow effect".
The opposite is true of people you don't care for, they're not pushed in story lines, clips, etc.. if you met them you're like "okay, cool you're Jim Michaels" or whoever, no big deal.
It's the degree of the push they get on the media that affects the reaction you would get in person.

Dominique was a world class player during the mid-late 80s, a terrific scorer who could cause any team a problem. I put him as #2 in the GOAT dunkers too, just ahead of Jordan (Nique should've beaten MJ in the 88 slam dunk contest, his last dunk was def a 50), but it was in Chicago so....
