Exactly. I mean we already KNOW they went to Dennis specifically to get his defense/rebounds, Phil, Mike, Scotty and Dennis are all on record saying this. 😂 so yea, team player like that? He could play in any era.
Why would it be easy? Guarding a guard now vs then is night and day. Rodman was guarding guards who dribbled the ball up the court with their back to the basket.

So you guys are saying a HOF and 5 time champ couldn't figure out how to be effective in today's game? But the same people say MJ would average 45 today even though he couldn't shoot 3's??? It doesn't make sense.
I laugh every time kids today say that Jordan played with grocery baggers. Dudes were hella jacked in the 90’s and athletic as hell. Dennis Rodman was jacked and his conditioning was off the charts.
MJ said, "Dennis was ALWAYS there doing his job. You could always count on Dennis!" He never let you down when it came to playing winning basketball! The worst thing anyone could have ever said to Dennis was he didn't give you everything he had. That would hurt him more than anything you could ever say about him. He never wanted to be the reason they didn't win! That type passion is gone from todays game!
love hearing KG talk about him. I remember watching The Last Dance and MJ talking about the practice where the team was running in a circle and the guy at the back has to overtake the guy in the front and no one could catch Dennis ahah! You know youre impressive when you have MJs respect!
He was an otherworldly athletic freak and also used to run on the treadmill and work out AFTER games, so his physical limit of exertion would be longer than the game itself so he would still be able to go flat out in the 4th quarter
man i still dont understand how people never mention his passing. Worm threw dots. outlet pass dots. halfcourt set dots. always in the scoring pocket too. his transition game was insane. he'd get a board outlet to the wing and then beat everybody up the floor for the layup if the pass was made. he would have outworked everybody in this era alone. "worm hit a 3 every now and then just to let you know he could shoot" thats absolutely it. KG gets it. KG knows ball 100%.
Besides Denis was a good shooter in high school. If I good remember he had more then 25 points per game. Real Monster. Chicago Bulls it was my team when I was a kid and Pippen is my favorite player.
Best Rodman story ever was from his first season with the Bulls. Mid-season, they wind up having two days off, so Dennis tells Phil Jackson “I’ll be in Vegas”. Two days go by, morning of game day…no Worm. Jerry Krause sends Michael on his private plane to Vegas to go get Dennis. Michael winds up tracking him down, it’s obvious he hasn’t slept in 2 days, still drunk and likely still high on coke. Michael gets him on the plane, they make it back to Chicago just in time. Dennis, still on zero sleep, goes out, pulls 18 boards, goes back to the locker room, no shower, gets dressed and heads to the club. By the time Jack Haley caught up with him, Dennis is at the club with a fine looking woman under each arm. Legend.
@@wolfchrt Pierce played exactly one game against Rodman and it was Rodman's last year in the NBA with the Mavs. Rodman had 16 rebounds that game, btw.
Most underrated part of the 2nd threepeat team was that in Jordan, Pip, Harp and the worm, there has never been a team that could play defense on their level.
They beat a team 78-49 or something like that once in the playoffs. Can't remember who. The bulls had 50+ at halftime. They were so good on defense they could invoke their own mercy rule. They'd just stop scoring because they DIDN'T HAVE TO.
I respect what Paul's saying... though I'd encourage people to check out Dennis particularly in the mid 90s with The Bulls. Anytime that MJ or Scottie or one of the wings had an "off" night you'd see it: Dennis would start shooting. Even threes. He was very mindful about "balance" and if the offense was cooking he'd chill... if they needed help he'd start putting them up. I believe that, if Dennis had wanted to, he could have put up 15 a game... but between Joe, Zeke, and Vinnie - between Sean Elliot and David - between MJ, Pip, and Ron Harper this guy knew that what they NEEDED was a guy that could guard 3, 4, and 5 on all of those teams: not another person fighting for offensive touches.
He scored 40+ ppg in his final year in college. He was a monster scorer. You'd see it when you needed to. He could've dropped 20+ a night if he was on a team where he was the first option.
Dennis rodman is the only person to ever hold Shaq to 0 points, no center or power forward is more powerful people need to just stop the disrespect. that is prime Shaq, big diesel, superman th-cam.com/video/89IQcTPHkRs/w-d-xo.html
Well said. Rodman knew when to step it up. Rodman should have been the finals MVP vs the Sonics. MJ wasn't having the greatest series and the games were tough, but Rodman made the plays in the most critical moments of that series. His IQ for the game was off the charts. He had the ability to change a game, solo, without scoring. It's unique. That being said, todays game has that rule where you have to let people run around without touching them, hand checking is out, fouls are called for everything, refs are biased drama queen manipulating tyrants, and offense/defense is run completely different. Players travel all the time and they don't even box out... It's made for kids. Its made to sell. It's a different game. Same name, but different game.
Exactly. He actually could score and shoot 3s when he wanted to. The videos are on here for those that don’t believe it.. Just because he was not asked to do it, doesn’t mean he could not do it…
Rodman is top 5 all time defensively. Defense translate in any era. Anyone on that list can play in any era. Plus Rodman made up for his lack of scoring through his opps lack of scoring and his offensive rebounding giving the his team numerous 2nd chance opportunities.
@@tebandulin5637 Idk if you ever heard John Salley tell the story of how they spent their allstar breaks early in their careers. yea like when the game is tied and the clock is running out and Jordan shoots and misses then Rodman gets the offensive rebound passes it back to Jordan who shoots this time hitting the jumper and wins the game. Paul Pierce is trying to tell me that cant happen in today's game.
When I was in HS in the mid 90s and we played pick up, EVERYONE played like Rodman. No one wanted to be a shooter, we all wanted to be that guy who got rebounds and putbacks.
I’m reminded of the interview where he broke down the mathematics of rebounds based on how many turns of the ball, angle, and how each player individually shot. His conditioning was crazy.
He is such a physical anomaly. Laterally quick, with Russ like energy and a winner’s mentality. I would hope that he could make the adjustments in the league today.
@@jaylebron777Defense does pay the bills tho lmao the best offensive guys just get paid more. Russ has the most overrated “energy” in the history of pro sports. Dude gives ZERO effort when he doesn’t have the ball and gets lost all the time on defense
The more I listen to KG I’m convinced he has a mind for this game. He’s not just a great athlete but he put time into watching tape, strength & conditioning, matchups, offensive & defensive play calling etc…I respect 🫡 it
KG was wrong in this one. He just knows how to sell his point. He talks about how physical Rodman was and how he would toss you but that would just buy him a foul and maybe a tech in this game. He acted like Rodman would hit threes every now and then to show you he can but look at his 3 pt % that was a super bad take. Paul was right maybe he would learn to play today but as he was no team would have him. Even Draymond who everyone keeps talking about for some reason is a completely different player.
There's a story told by one of his teammates where they basically said he would sit under the hoop during shooting practice and just watch bounces and ball movement to predict where his teammates shots would go if they missed. He was on another level.
During a game the commentary said that Dennis studied the way the trajectory of the shots and the way the ball bounces off the rim to predict where the ball would go. You could see it in the game that he was always poisoned as if he knew where the ball was gonna end up
I think that there would always be a place for an Unlimited Energy Guy, who actually cares to play Defense, all the while getting into the Heads of the Opponent. There would always be playing time for that kind of guy. At least on MY TEAM.
@youngcity4241 fans don’t expect more from Draymond. Dennis was a rebound leader and a defender of 1-5 who didn’t demand the ball. What team couldn’t use him?
@Watchingvideoslikeu and kg made a great point that rodman wasn't only under the rim, he was getting rebounds even beyond the free throw line and into the front row, he was going out of his way to get rebounds. Even if u can't score, if you're getting all these 9ffensive rebounds and then able to defend basically everyone on the other team there's no way ur not an asset
Born and raised in San Antonio. Saw The Worm at peak Wormness before he graced the GOAT’s presence in Chicago. Watching him play in person was truly a sight to see. One of One. Much love Worm!
His dream/goal was to get 40 rebounds in one game. He said something like “if i get 40, im gonna take off my jersey and retire. That’s my dream way to leave the game.”
People have absolutely no vision to team success if they think Rodman couldn’t play today. None of bigs today stand a chance against him on boards. U would get so many second chances points he’d pull a lot of offensive rebounds and tip ins.
Would love to hear Kerr break down what he would do if he had Rodman on his team today. (For hypothetical, if they did a time travel swap with Draymond.) How would Rodman attack the changes in the game and adjust his work accordingly. (This is a guy who would count rotations on a guy’s jumper in warmups and use it to figure out where the rebound was likely to go.) Remember Kerr won titles with Phil (who coached Worm at his best) and with Pop (who had a nightmare of a time), AND played with AND against Rodman, so he is probably the most uniquely qualified to weigh in on a scenario like this. Would LOVE to hear this.
Paul Pierce trippin, how is a guy that gives u 110% everytime he's on the floor, defense player of the year type defense at his peak and was still solid out if his prime when helping the bulls run off another 3 peat, AND he's going to grab u 10-13 boards on average, 15-20 boards on a great night, and probably if it only 10 boards and not 15, at least 2 of those 10 are offensive rebounds/put backs! He's basically a rebounding freak with very solid to great Defense. Since did a HALL OF FAME type player become unplayable in ANY league??!! 🙄 I agree with everything KG said, 1000% on point!
I agree with y'all but P had a reasonable point. Everybody nowadays has to be able to stretch the floor... So I can kinda see that even though KG pointed out plenty of exceptions that were similar.
They stopped playing Kenneth Faried for no reason. Everybody is not gonna shoot like Steph. Somebody’s gotta be the hustler. So it’s not a matter of could Dennis do well, but a question of whether these analytics people would play him?
Feel the same about montrez harrell. Faried is in a class of his own, that dude hustled!! Always had energy, never tired, kept playing. But harrell played his roll, would play in paint against centers + taller players, but couldnt get time on court but they'd put someone else in that role who was a perimiter player-all for "small ball" type lineup. Coaching has fell off heavily over the years too.
DON'T GET IT TWISTED, Dennis Rodman WOULD be a problem around the hoop on today's game. High IQ when it comes to rebounds and DEFENSE 💯💯💪🏾💪🏾LET'EM KNOW, KG
That part🎯..Worm would out work most of these guys in todays game just like KG said. Worm's engine was on another level...he avgd about 13rpg BACK THEN. He'd avg close to 20rpg in todays WAY less physical league.
This analytics era is the worst. Almost all the emphasis is put on the numbers. And the game feels too calculated and soulless. No wonder so many people hate it now.
Draymond plays, and Rodman is 100 times the rebounder and isolation defender Green is, plus Rodmans basketball IQ. So u would suffer with his lack of scoring for those things. Now he still needs to be next to all time great scorer like Green and Rodman was in his career
He sat and analysed games with his coaches. For the Piston and Bulls coach he was a dream player in that he was so intelligent and cared so much about defense. He cried when he won defensive player of the year. Both Daly and Jackson described him as their most valuable player.
Paul Pierce...RODMAN WOULDNT HAVE HAD TO MAKE ADJUSTMENTS WITH INITIATING OR PASSING!!! Ima need Pierce to brush up on his basketball homework!!! GO BACK AND WATCH RODMAN WITH THE BULLS, his role was most CRITICAL because HE WAS MAKING THOSE PASSES out the post either to the wings, corner or to teammates cutting backdoor with his precise bounce passes! Lets not just talk off the cuff without serious reflection...and lets not forget Rodman could score the ball IF HE WANTED TO!!! He wanted to win championships though so he knew his niche would be to do the things other players couldnt or wouldnt do gaining possessions through offensive boards and helping transition points by grabbing defensive rebounds and making fast accurate outlet passes. Do yourself a great service and watch Rodman again you will see the hustle, the pick and roll, the face up the swing pass that Draymond thinks he made is actually what Rodman was doing all those years ago...ASK STEVE KERR HE WAS THERE WITH THE BULLS!!! RODMANS A PROBLEM AN ANY ERA HE GIVES TEAMS EXTRA POSSESSIONS!!!
The most rebounds Dennis got in a single game was in 1992 vs the Pacers with 34 rebounds😮 But what's even more crazy is that Dennis Lead the NBA in Rebounds for 7 years straight(all of which he was 30+ years in age during that span) These two stats alone makes me feel confident in his ability
One thing that’s forgotten about Rodman is that he can actually score if he wants to, dude was a scorer in college, he just turned into the hustle guy he’s known for in the NBA because he didn’t have to score due to the abundance of scorers on the teams he played for.
@@grahamstrouse1165 Sure, but he also played in an NBA where players earned their spot for their roles. People take for granted that in the late 80s into the early 90s the NBA was a coaches game. They called the game almost down to the play by play like football. It wasn't as if even the stars of the league could just do what they want like today's game. I mean in every Era of Rodman's career he played in very strict offensive systems alongside incredibly high volume scorers, guys like Aguire, Dantley, Isiah, David Robinson, and then of course Jordan and Pippen. I think in today's NBA there would be pressure on Rodman to be more than he was, simply because I think we are witnessing the most rigid NBA the league has seen in a while. I mean if you dont shoot 3s they basically boo you out the league and contracts are generated by hype alone. However, I think in his own time Rodman played the field right, I mean there was a time in San Antonio where is career looked fried but he stuck to his brand of basketball, rebranded himself, and got 3 more rings out of it. But i'll just end on this just based on conditioning and athleticism alone, theres no doubt he had offensive potential way beyond a Draymond.
He was a workout monster. Kevin Garnett is not the first guy to talk about him doing really intense workouts after playing 40 minutes in games .You have to remember in Detroit he scored a little more, but in his later career the teams he was on it wasn't as necessary for him to be such an active part of the offense. He was more a pure defensive anchor and rebounder because that's what the teams he played for asked him to do. I think that he started to check out more mentally in the last chapter of his career as well. But I think he would have adjusted the way he played if you were in this era. Fitness is such an important weapon in in basketball and he was one of the most fit players in terms of endurance stamina and pound-for-pound strength. I feel like because of Michael jordan, not to take anything away from Jordan, but we over rate players who score more points. But everywhere Rodman win championships followed, and he was an important part of every single one of those championships. Two in detroit, 3 in Chicago. He was like a modern day Bill Russell. Intensity, tenacity , how hard a guy will fight you for it are are super important for winning on the court. That's why I'm in Jordan got along , because they were both tenacious, they were both intense, they were both Fighters . And also , intensity tenacity fighting for it don't show up on the stat sheet, until you're counting rings. Remember that when you talk about Bill Russell too
Rodman averaged 25.7 points and 15.7 rebounds in college. Rodman could score the ball but he sacrificed scoring for the team. He would dominate today’s game!
if draymond green, pj tucker, kevon looney, olynyk and rudy gobert played solid games in this era, Prime rodman will be nightmare in a faster pace those outlet pass he can do will be limitless and nobody touch him doing rebounds
Even if he played today identically to the way he played back then, you couldn’t just leave him because he’s gonna get another offensive possession for the team; you had to keep a body on him.
Rodman on the treadmill story almost killed me,🤣🤣🤣🤣Side Note- I actually use to watch him play in Laguna Beach back in 2001 2002 as a Teen and my brother use to run games with him, he had a crazy engine even then 2 yrs after he retired, and yes he did pull up on his Motorcycle the same one KG talking about😂😂😂 straight facts!
3 elements that made the worm special…1) As KG stated, his “engine”……..Dude played at 200mph for an entire 48min!!!!………..2) His tip drills were unmatched…..The rebounds KG speaks of, at all spots on the court, came from Rodman keeping the ball alive on his positioning, and specifically, his tips, along with his hustle!………He was, and still is unmatched!…..🪱🏀🗑️⛹🏿🏆
Paul Pierce said “that’s what the game needs right now” (in reference to shooting). Nah, the game needs a game changer. It always has. Wilt shook things up, Magic, Jordan, Steph…they all revolutionized the game. The game is about breaking the mold but still utilizing the foundational skill passed down each generation.
Dennis Rodman could definitely play Nic Claxton/Lively/Gafford type of minutes. He’d just be small center. I also like Rodman slowing down Embiid and Jokic.
First player I thought of was Claxton. But more agressive. And yes, he’d give a lot of offensive players problems like the two you mentioned. He’d matchup well with Sabonis and he could guard Luka and Tatum 🤦🏾♂️
Oh yeah. Dennis Rodman was 5'11 coming out of high-school . He was a guard and not that great. He grew to 6'9 in a year after high-school. He had a regular job and had to go to a couple JUCO schools before he made it to the league. My point is he played the short man's game first so it made it easier for him to guard anyone.
Man, every time I hear KG tell stories he’s so passionate. When the current TNT NBA crew retires, he’s the first player that comes to mind as a replacement (if he wants to do it). May be a little to raw for prime time but hell I’d tune in 😂
Respect to KG showing love to the greats. KG always played the game with utmost respect and still holds the game up today. Salute my favorite player of all time.
that is why Jordan didnt care about what he wore in court or if coming in a bike to the stadium or even all the sexual orgies he had lol as long as he performed he was fine with it.
The thing I absolutely LOVE about KG is he’s such a student of the game. One of the last of a dying breed. Because these players today don’t know the history of the game beyond their mirrors.
The guy was gifted. It looks like people are attacking his offensive skills as the reason he couldn't play today. (1) there are plenty of starters and full timers today that don't score a lot. (2) He never tried to score. He passed out of shots all the time, even on offensive rebounds where he was 2 feet from the basket. He was keeping his meal-ticket happy. if he even upped his offense a little, and always went for the put back, he could average a respectable 12-15 easily. (3) the game today is 3 pointers and 4 footers. he would live in the 4 foot range and fit into today's game easily on offense. As a teammate, he was a scorers dream, always gave you the ball and checked the best offensive player on the other team so you didn't get wore out on D. While wearing them out.
People forget that when he was with the Pistons he was a scorer. His last years in Detriot he became the defensive stopper. Having to guard Pippen, Bird & Dr. J.
I listened to Howard Stern show. Back in the day he had Dennis Rodman in. The way Dennis talk about rebounds. Like the how the ball bounces off the glass. And the angles off it. It was wild listening non sport show. And of course Howard was asking all the right questions.
Bro Dennis Rodman was an absolute monster, he would be perfect in todays small ball lineup, he could catch and finish lions/dunks/layups and defend/rebound against anybody. His value on defense/rebounding would more than make up for his shooting
I also think he would have been able to learn to shoot - I don't think he had any of the mental blocks that would get in the way of him improving that side of his game like a Shaq or Ben Simmons it's just that when you play alongside Michael Jordan that is not what you are being called upon to get better at - Draymond was actually a really good shooter early in his career - and he picked his 3 % back up this season but when KD joined the Dubs there was no reason for him to be shooting
Rodman could play Daniel Gafford's role on the Mavs without having to adapt his offensive skill set. If Robert Williams made a living feasting at the dunker's spot, Rodman could too. Because Rodman was used to being a role player on offense, he was comfortable in any kind of system. Rodman's passing was also underrated. His best 3Pt FG% was about 32%. That could be improved with the right coaching. I prefer the Pistons version of Dennis, because he had to bulk up later when he moved up to 4 spot and had to guard bulkier players.
@@Lo-236 unfortunately you can't just be good in specific areas anymore. Look at Tony Allen, dude was a menace on multiple teams, did some GREAT things... Then Steve Kerr exploited his glaring weakness and he became unplayable in playoffs for MEM. You can't be that bad offensively and still play today if you under 7'0. Need insane height to be bad at offense (Gobert) Even Ben Simmons is an example. Dude was elite defensively guarding multiple positions vs ATL, but his mental decline in his offense completely overshadowed what he did well. Draymond is same, at times when Dray shot is in a slump, he's a negative out there despite his defense/playmaking because defense would just leave him. When Rodman played that was illegal defense lol, you literally weren't allowed to leave Rodman defensively, unless you were doubling on ball... So great coaches like Daly and Phil could position Rodman in ways to make his defender essentially get stuck to him. Had rules been like they are now, Rodman would've been unplayable in some series. Just never guard him and leave a big in drop coverage to deny lobs/cuts... Would've given MJ/IT way less space to operate with ball.

Amazing
love hearing KG talk about him.

I feel honored to have been able to watch him play in the 90’s.
Legend.

They were the 2nd oldest team in the league, too.
Yep
Rodman is on all my starting 5 squads. Need that beast.

(This is a guy who would count rotations on a guy’s jumper in warmups and use it to figure out where the rebound was likely to go.)
Remember Kerr won titles with Phil (who coached Worm at his best) and with Pop (who had a nightmare of a time), AND played with AND against Rodman, so he is probably the most uniquely qualified to weigh in on a scenario like this.
Would LOVE to hear this.

@@grahamstrouse1165 that doesn't mean he can't score, he would have to focus on being a more efficient shooter

When the current TNT NBA crew retires, he’s the first player that comes to mind as a replacement (if he wants to do it). May be a little to raw for prime time but hell I’d tune in 😂
KG got a lot of respect for Rodman. Love to see it!
KG is dropping jewels and Pierce is his usual confused self.
He would be much more effective today. No centers to even compete with for rebounds.
Respect to KG showing love to the greats. KG always played the game with utmost respect and still holds the game up today. Salute my favorite player of all time.
In between those lines Dennis Rodman worked very hard. Michael Jordan respected Rodman work in between the Basketball Court lines.
that is why Jordan didnt care about what he wore in court or if coming in a bike to the stadium or even all the sexual orgies he had lol as long as he performed he was fine with it.
Usually if you were tasked with guarding those 3, we ain't having youtube conversations about them.
Need insane height to be bad at offense (Gobert)
Even Ben Simmons is an example.
Idk wat Paul pierce talking about rodman would be hell of effective in todays nba with just his rebounding alone n energy u know how many pts all his rebounds led to 2nd chance pts imagine him on the warriors steph would have broke that 3 pts record super earlier then he did if he had a rodman getting him the rock off the cup
Exactly. All these bigs that seem like they're scared to rebound, Worm would average 20+ a night for his career in today's league. Especially if you gave him a shooter like Steph.
Facts cause Draymond can’t shoot like that
But they fazed a lot players out that can’t shoot, Drummond, Howard ect and they was averaging 14 rebounds
Paul needed to watch the interview of Jackson and Jordan saying Dennis understood and picked up the triangle offense in 1995 preparing for 96 quicker than them. 😊
Damn i miss 80s and 90s basketball
Na fr it's so watered down now
The best rebounder ever. One of the top few defenders ever. One of the toughest competitors ever. A guy that knew his role, and played it perfectly.
Rodman is dominant in any era.
Did we all forget Dennis was a scorer in college? He Changed his game for the Pistons.. (During his three year stint, Rodman averaged: 25.7 points per game. 5.7 rebound.)
His career high in rebounds was 34 on March 4, 1992 versus the Pacers
