The backstory to this was that Lara had just broken up from a long-term relationship, had also had a close family member die and her attempts to launch into the United States were thwarted by Celine Dion's management team who threatened to stop her performing in any of the European venues (Celine's management were also Lara's management). The upshot was that Lara became depressed and suicidal. Her fans followed her story very closely and approached the musical director and pianist to say they wanted to sing this to her. Attendees were all made aware and song sheets were handed out on arrival. The song Je T'aime (I love you) had the lyrics changed to On T'aime (we love you) so the audience could sing to her appropriate words.

Celine was born in Canada, Lara is a naturalized Canadian citizen. The decision to promote Celine over Lara was purely political; quality was not a consideration.
I attended Lara's 'Un regard neuf' concert in Rouen, France in 2006. She opened the show, out of sight, singing Je t'aime a capella.

Lara was facing hard times , both on the personal (health, love betrayal and breakup) and professional (her progress blocked in the US by her own record company) sides.
Her fanbase knew most of it and wanted to show support and they used this song, one of her biggest hits in France, replacing the title” Je t’aime / I love you” by “On t’aime / We love you”.
I love how Lara, after the initial surprise, establishes a beautiful dialog with the crowd, giving them room to sing with her.
It shows how benevolent and humble she is.
The song itself is a gem, it was as I said one of her songs that reached the top 10 in France charts. But it even grew bigger after it and has become now a french classic, her most iconic french song. It is still attracting a lot of covers from the young french and canadian vocalists generation (Amir, Jeck, …). Most frenchmen know the song by heart.
Surprisingly, it was also a massive success in russia and eastern europe: she became a superstar there thanks to it (and 15 years before her lengthy collaboration with Igor Krutoy that extended this even further) and the song is a MUST in russian karaoke and a recurrent in russian singer contests.
Again many covers of this songs from eastern europe talents: Polina Gagarina, Sevara Nazarkhan, Katerina Maslova, Natalia Tsarikova, …
As always with her biggest hits, Lara has performed it in many different ways:
    • Intense and powerful at World Music Awards 1999,
    • Subtle and delicate in her En Toute Intimité 2003 tour.
    • Classy and moving, performing with 2 vertebrae broken, at Royal Albert Hall in London (2011)
    • Jazzy in a recent perf (2018) with a band from Quebec
The lyrics are also mesmerizing. Despite the title, it is not a classic love song but a breakup song instead.
“Je t’aime” was written by Lara Fabian and Rick Allison, her longtime music producer and composer. He also had been her boyfriend for a few years, at the start of her career. This song was written when their love evolved to a friendship and a professional relationship . It speaks about a couple splitting while still having a lot of sentiments one for the other.

@@henkus79 lara today seem to be completely fine but has faced many health challenges during her career:
      - eating disorders severe enough to lead to 2 small heart attacks(end of 90s)
      - a serious hepatic infection with a benign tumor, not really a liver cancer (early 2000s)
      - these 2 vertebrae broken in 2011
-becoming deaf for a while after an earplug accident where she received 1000Hz in her ears. She fainted several times on stage and was only curated by the Canadian army using an hyperbaric chamber, in the same way they were doing with their divers. This explains she often touches her left ear during songs nowadays (2013)
      - discovering her future baby had no heart and was not viable, only surviving in her belly through her own heart, and having to sing that same day in a concert in Brussels (2017)

I am French, and the fact that she was moved and that she changed the version comes from the fact that at the time she suffered a lot of mockery from the French public with this song because in the original version some people said that she “screamed” and the song was widely distributed in France, perhaps too much. that plus the fact that she has always had a complicated love life, not to mention this wave of love that she receives from her fans who say “I love you” to reassure her.

Lara doesn't sing a song... she lives it!
Heck, sometimes she barely survives through it. Whilst Celine is absolutely a 'technically' perfect singer (often too perfect) - Lara is an 'emotionally' perfect singer... she completely connects to each and every song, often leaving herself visibly shaken by the end. She tears out her heart and leaves it beating on the stage... night after night... show after show.
And, that's what's missing from most music. Forget her outstanding vocal technique. True emotional connection translates to every listener... and it's more than hitting the right tone, or training yourself to fry or when to go breathy... it's about fully inhabiting the song till you cannot NOT falter with emotion.
And it's this deep empathy and connection that we see here. Lara wears her heart on her sleeve... she's fully affected by her songs and by her environment. And she's brave enough to just go with it and be truly vulnerable.
    And this... THIS is beauty.
And nobody does this like her, which is why I truly believe that Lara Fabian is one of the very greatest female singers of our time.
    Lara... on t'aime!

I know that she did a whole concert later that season, but couldnt go to it☹️. Maybe also a good artist for you to react is Emma Kok, she did with André Rieu in 2023 the French song Voila at age of 15, with a paralyzed stomache and then she toured with André Rieu and his orchestra the world. Last july they were again here in the Netherlands (Maastricht) and she did a very new English song (Dancing on the stars) and they go touring still around the world! She is now 16. Actualy this version is the only one i need. Sometimes you dont need a perfect voalization or a good video ... but you need this. I just close my eyes and take it all into my soul and get the little peace we always looking for but not many realy find. Never saw such a beautiful duett between a vocalist and the crowd. Best version ever. And if you know the backstory like me behind this it makes u so emotional, you dont need another version anymore and you want to hug her together with the whole crowd. This particular moment is by far the most viewed version.

She basically assumes backing vocals, and that is genius.

@AmericansLearn Lara sings this song in 2 completely different styles. The powerful one: th-cam.com/video/cf4Ta3ddn9s/w-d-xo.html and the soft delicate one, mostly in her head voice: th-cam.com/video/jAb5Lkl5InY/w-d-xo.html Both versions are exceptionally beautiful. This song reached #1 or near the top of music charts of many French speaking countries.

For me she sings this version soft because when the song comes out, she sang very loudly and tv shows, humorists and other people made fun of her because she "screams". They were very nasty. So after she starts to sing it softer. And the second reason is because she wants to hear the fans sings and let them space to sings for her. She shows them respect.

You didn't understand what the public was doing, she sings: 'je t'aime' = I love you, the public sings, 'on t'aime' = we love you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Come in and listen to Tommy Johansson, former guitarist in Sabaton. Has his own band Majestica but is a godsend on covers. He sings like a god, plays over 10 instruments, does everything himself. In and listen. Abbas The winner takes it all, Tina T simply the best, Queen, Phantom of the opera, shes gone and much much more. In and enjoy. The best of the best

You should know that Lara Fabian was made fun of a lot in France, and that despite her enormous success this hurt her a lot. I found it unfair, but to say that she is authentic and organic is going a bit far because she does too much, even if she is sincere she overplays and badly at that, she herself admitted it.
