“Je suis Malade”, now a french classic, was written by famous French singer & songwriter Serge Lama together with composer/singer Alice Dona in 1973.
This is based on his own experience and he was the original performer, hence some lyrics are a bit male-oriented (eg my mother leaves me, whiskies, I pour my blood in your body, …).
When Serge Lama had a dinner with Alice Dona and told her about his obsessive love that was leading to a road block, she came back home and composed the music in a couple of hours.
The morning after, she presented him the music and he wrote the lyrics in … 20 minutes.
Serge Lama was the original performer in 1973, it started to be promoted on the radio, and the song was brought to fame only when, a few months after, Dalida covered it. She was an absolute mega star in France, another emotional powerhouse, and this song resonated very much with her own feelings. Her success with this song transformed it into a french classic, and started to make it famous abroad.
But it is Lara Fabian that really made this song a very popular song in many countries with her cover in the mid 90s.
At that time Dalida had already passed away, but Serge Lama was (and is) still alive. Dalida and Serge were two inspirations for Lara, so she sent an audio copy to Serge of her version.
She was unknown at that time in France but he was so impressed with her vocal skills and her emotions rendering that he invited her in France to sing it as a duet during his own Paris concert in January 1995. It was a triumph. So he sat in a front row seat and asked her to sing it again alone.
Lara also had made some subtle changes to the song that gave it even more power. Serge and Lara became good friends and performed several other duets later on.
The 1999 version ("From Lara with Love" Concert in Montreal)
    th-cam.com/video/eHSyk4SGtuY/w-d-xo.html
is legendary internationally and has attracted many artists to do a cover, even from non french-speaking countries.
The most recent ones I am aware of are from italian singer Giulia Falcone, from the korean singer Choi Sung Hoon or from the korean band Forestella.
Lara is used to perform the song very differently in each of her tour and for instance the En Toute Intimité, 2003, Paris Olympia version is even more dramatic

    Hi Lauren
Lara and Dimash are connected by an amazing Russian Composer called Igor Krutoy. He was writing songs for Lara before he went into retirement. Whenever you see a bald-headed guy
playing the piano, that's Igor, and he wrote the song. Then Igor came out of retirement to write songs for Dimash. This is because writing songs for a person who can sing 7 octaves,
gives a songwriter unlimited scope and range. So Lara and Dimash sing Igor's songs. An example of this is" Mademoiselle Hyde ~ New Wave 2019 Sochi" this is sung by Dimash
Then we have the same song sung by Lara in exactly the same concert hall "Dimash Kudaibergen + Lara Fabian Mademoiselle Hyde REACTION & ANALYSIS by vocal coachopera singer"
Sorry, it's not the one I was looking for, but gives a direct comparison. The really good one is where Lara and Dimash sing together. This is Igor's birthday party on ice. Watch this clip
and get blown away "Lara Fabian, Aida Garifullina - Ti amo cosi". Another great song by Igor is "Olimpico Igor Krutoy"

Just to clarify, Igor composed the music, Lara wrote the lyrics and melodies to the songs for Mademoiselle Zhivago, with the exception of The Love of Tired Swans in Russian, but she wrote lyrics for the French version called Je T'aime Encore.

Always, always react to Lara's LIVE performances. Lara is the only one whose performance is better live in front of an audience than in a studio. That's how talented she is and how important real emotion is to her. When Lara Fabian does a cover, hers becomes the new original. Nobody emotes lyrics like her. Just like an actress, she becomes the lyrics. Nobody can paint emotions with their voice like Lara. It is no accident that you can hear her take a breath. She wants you to. How did she get the idea that an audible breath being taken is a good way to approximate brokenness or the sound of a sob? There's a reason why she was Dimash's idol growing up. They're both emotional singers, both multi-lingual (Lara's biggest advantage on Dimash is that her English is ten times better than his), multi-genre singers. If you want to react to a song sung by both Dimash and Lara (apart from the duets), they include: Adagio, Mademoiselle Hyde, Love is a dream, The Love of Tired Swans... Igor Krutoy, the famed Russian composer who came out of retirement to compose for Dimash (he's the piano player in many of Dimash's videos) had previously worked with Lara on all of these songs as well. The singer closest to Dimash in age and talent and shock factor is Diana Ankudinova, one of many young artists inspired by Lara Fabian.

    More information on Lara Fabian:
Lara is recognized as one of the best vocalist ever seen on earth and all professionals list her in the top vocalist tier with Barbra, Whitney, Mariah, Celine, Lisa Fischer, ....
In my personal opinion, she is even the best.
There are a few vocal characteristics that are her signature: her famous resonance for instance that allows her to sing acapella without mic in venues with 8,000 attendees. Her nickname in the singing world is "the ring" due to this. I would also list her amazing phrasing, breath management and her pleasant tone even when belting in her upper register.
So she is one of the best vocalist ever, but on top of that, she adds a few things that make her an absolute package with no equivalence:
    • she speaks 2 languages natively (french, italian), and 2 others fluently (english, spanish), can speak a bit of dutch (and sicilian), and understand quite well russian and portuguese. She has sung in 12 languages in total
    • she is an amazing songwriter and wrote lyrics for 200+ songs, in the 4 languages she speaks fluently. She often co-composes the music, and is at the source of the melodic line.
    • she acts and performs on stage as nobody else, she colors and reveals the meaning of every single word in the songs, and her ability to emote, to draw you in is second to none
    • she is the sweetest soul on earth, very humble, down to earth and benevolent. She likes to meet others, and her fans are always pleasantly surprised when this happens.
A quick background on her and her career:
She is belgian, her father is flemish, but also has italian roots (her mother is from sicilia) and American roots ( her grandfather is from Detroit). She was raised in sicilia first then in Belgium so she speaks both italian and french as native languages.
She has been classically trained on vocal, piano and songs composition for 10 years ( from 8 to 18) in the Brussels Royal Conservatory.
She is still having vocal lessons and training several times a week today.
She started her career in Canada in the early 90s, more precisely in Quebec, the french-speaking part of Canada.
She had been living for years in Montreal and has also Canadian citizenship. She just moved
back to Italy a few months ago (temporarily?).
She became very famous in Quebec and then conquered France in 1996/1997 (she topped charts there and some of her songs such as "Je t'aime" or "Tout" became classics of the french music).
In 2000, she was about to penetrate the US Market, with a lot of media initial interest. Her first english song (I will love again), a pop dance song, stayed number one on the US Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart for 58 weeks in a row and number 32 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Her Album ("Lara Fabian") was about to become a massive hit, and the concert "From Lara With Love" was recorded to be broadcasted everywhere in the US.
This concert is legendary, packed with masterpieces (covered by many great vocalists later on).
But a dispute with Sony on artistry directions, and the will from Celine Dion's staff to block her progress in the US, completely broke this plan.
She thus refocused back on Europe and made huge success there, extending her reach to Eastern Europe and Central Asia where she became an absolute superstar through her collaboration with Igor Krutoy during several years. She is absolutely massive in Russia for instance.
She is also a star in Brazil as her song "Love By Grace", used as the soundtrack for a very famous soap opera, topped the charts for months and become a recurrent in the local singing contests since then.
Many of her songs became classics and were covered by the other singing legends: Barbra Streisand, Shirley Bassey, Josh Groban (they are friends and he told she is a role model for him), Linda Eder, …
With her success in Europe, Brazil and part of Asia, she is the inspiration of the new generation of vocalists: most of them are coming from there.
Thru their covers of Lara Fabian songs, USA and many other countries are now rediscovering her.
    She is Dimash's idol:
I’ve read somewhere that, when he was a child, he was listening her songs every night to get asleep.
He covered many of her songs, most of these were composed by Igor Krutoy and written by by Lara.
Out of my mind I can list:
    ○ Adagio (She wrote it and is the original performer),
    ○ Mademoiselle Hyde (she wrote it and is the original performer),
    ○ Love of Tired Swans (she wrote the song in French under the title "Je t'aime encore" and was the original performer of the french then the russian versions, Dimash covered the russian version)
    ○ Ascolta La Voce / Vocalize (this was a pure vocalization and she was the original performer, then lyrics were added for Dimash and it was rebranded as "Know")
She also wrote the lyrics of Dimash's song "Your Love".
And she covered "Love is like a dream" before him (song from Igor Krutoy originally performed by Alla Pugacheva).
Finally, they also performed "Ti Amo Cosi" together, in trio with Aida Garafulina: this is a song that she performed originally with Dmitri Hvorostovsky and Sumi Jo then again later with Dmitri and Alina Yarovaya, before this new trio with Dimash and Aida.
Dimash is now also working with Igor Krutoy: Igor and Dimash connected after his Adagio cover, also endorsed by Lara.
Igor came back from retirement and composed severals songs for him after it.
Many other top vocalists from the current generation covered her songs, some have Lara as a role model and big inspiration:
    ○ Floor Jansen (Adagio),
    ○ Polina Gagarina (Adagio, Je t’aime),
    ○ Diana Ankudinova (Tomorrow is a lie),
    ○ Morissette Amon (Broken Vow),
    ○ Gabriel Henrique (Love by Grace),
    ○ Cakra Khan (Broken Vow),
    ○ Katrina Velarde (Broken Vow),
    ○ Regine Velasquez (Broken Vow),
    ○ Dmitri Hvorostovsky (Adagio),
    ○ Giulia Falcone (Adagio, Caruso, Je suis malade, Je t'aime),
    ○ Forestella (Je suis Malade),
    ○ Almira (from 4th Impact band) (Broken Vow),
    ○ Gigi de Lana (Broken Vow)
    ○ Julie Anne san Jose (Adagio, Broken Vow),
    ○ Rimar ( Adagio, Broken Vow, Know),
    ○ Il Divo (Adagio)
    ○ Daria Bentsa (I guess I loved you),
    ○ Sarah Geronimo (Broken Vow)
    ○ Laura Bretan ( Adagio, Caruso),
    ○ Jackie Evancho (Je t’aime, Caruso and Broken Vow, BV rewritten as « Imaginer » by Lara for Jackie),

    ○ Petra Berger (Adagio, Broken Vow),

    ○ Sevara Nazarkhan (Je t’aime)
    ○ ....
NB: Lara did cover Caruso , Je suis malade, and Love by grace, these are not her originals, but I mention these here as the related artists were attracted to cover it again after listening to Lara’s version.
Today, Lara still has an amazing voice and tone and can still reach the 5th octave with resonance ; she still offers these emotive renditions that are her unique signature.
In June 2022, she kicked off a WW tour and stunned her fans once again with 5 magical concerts in Canada. She completed the europe part in September/October and I attended a concert from this tour. It was packed and she was again spectacular.
On April, May, June 2023 she had again some wonderful concerts in Tbilissi, Georgia, then in Ouzbekhistan, Kazakhstan, Romania.
She is about to release a new album and kick off another tour that will visit eastern europe in april 2024 (Czech Republic, Moldavia, Croatia, Romania, Bulgaria, Turkiye), then several locations in Canada in june 2024 and, after some rest and a few TV Shows, France in 2025. The first song of the new album (titled "Ta Peine" - Your Sorrow) was released late January 2024 and is a success in France.
Sorry if I was long, but I hope this gives some context on Lara.

You are absolutely amazing. Thank you so much for all of this! It absolutely offers context, and I am really grateful to know it. Also, lots of people want me to look at Adagio, and knowing that people like Floor and Dimash have also covered that song, It might be really cool to see it from all three angles. Hers first of course.

@@AmericansLearnDefinitely watch hers first, because this song came from her very soul. It's about songwriting and how important that part is to her. On the surface it sounds like an intense love song to a person, but listen to the lyrics and you hear a love song to the god of inspiration, as Adagio, begging him to never abandon her. It speaks of the mystical connection that songs are born from, and how fragile it can be, but she'll always be waiting at "the piano that plays". This is why, for this song, I find it hard to appreciate any of the covers, it's just so personal to her. It's her very DNA. And I don't think anyone has done a reaction to it knowing this ahead of time, so you're one up on everyone else!

🇨🇦 I am biased, but Lara is probably the Best female artist/singer/performer the world has ever underestimated !
Eric Sicard and his comments below will tell you about this song, and then about Lara !
She is a classically trained Lyric Soprano and has sung in 12 languages !
A master of breathe control and a range the envy of most artists ! Every syllable of each word, and each word of every lyric, is sung clearly and complete (to the very end) no matter which language she is singing in !
As you are a Dimash fan, I would recommend "Adagio", which she co-wrote ! As a Lara Fabian fan I would recommend that you react to "Caruso" next ! 🇨🇦

I've never encountered someone who was willing to invest some time and effort into reacting to a piece of music like you did with this piece of music. Listening to it twice and considering it from several different angles, both lyrically and musically, reveals so much about the song but also reveals something about you: A simple devotion to understanding and immersing oneself in the music, it's meaning and the possible connections that exist between the artist and the performance and the song.
A small regret of mine is that my mother didn't live long enough to experience Laura Fabian and, in particular, her performance of this piece which she would have loved: My mother was a French lady who met and married my father shortly after the end of the second world war. My father was a relatively uncultured farm-boy from Indiana while my mother was an educated French lady who had run an entire railroad system out of Rheims during the Nazi occupation and leaked railroad scheduling information to her father, my grandfather (a member of the Maquis who died in a French sanitarium when I was 10 years-old.) who, in turn, used the information to blow-up German troop-trains and generally disrupt the flow of men and material throughout France and Europe.
I watched my mother whither and, ultimately, end her own life because of years of producing children, being abused and suffering through a loveless marriage to a man who was emotionally unavailable, cruel and ignorant and, even worse, I believe, a man who refused to acknowledge just how smart and multi-faceted my mother was...a man who demanded that his family kept their mouths closed lest he hear something that exposed his own ignorance or challenged his shallow, American sense of superiority.
I'm not even sure my mother would have been able to bear the truth in this song, although she would have adored it, sometimes the only way to deal with pain and loneliness is to hold it in your hand and really examine it up close which I think she could have done given the opportunity. Anyway, I loved my mother and everything I know about emotions and compassion and isolation and love I learned from her, such a sad, lonely spirit, my mother, a memory that comes alive every-time I hear this song.
Enough, back to your reaction: Thank-you for fleshing this song out for me in a way nobody else, despite how much they insist that they liked the performance, has done before. Beyond your analysis of the piece, which was accurate and impassioned, you seem like a very nice and genuine person who deserves whatever success may come to you in this weird, swiftly evolving new world we live in. Anyway, I'm too old (70) to beat around the bush anymore: I'm hooked and subscribed...

Wow, this is the greatest reaction to this performance I've ever seen! I love how you structured it, that was fantastic. I think this is the greatest performance of any song, any time, from anywhere. It's also the ultimate example of making a song your own. She doesn't sing a song, she becomes it. As another great Lara reactor says, "She has all the things!". I'd never heard such a complete artist before her. She has mastery over every tool and knows exactly how and when to use them. She never does anything just because she can. Every choice is in service to telling the story. Even the bits that get ugly, because she doesn't care about looking perfect and pretty while performing, she cares about making you understand. She's the first and only artist that I can listen to for hours without understanding the language and not caring, because I feel it. I only discovered her in 2018 when a pair of Canadian skaters used this song. I had to know who was singing. It's the greatest rabbit hole in all of TH-cam! Reaction videos are finally making up for the way Sony completely screwed her and us in the US. I can't wait to see the next one from you!

Hello Lauren, AmericansLearn, from South France, ⁣🌴🌞
Serge Lama’s original version (1973) on the INA Archive video (available on YT) is also very fascinating.
The difference lies in each person’s situation. Lara, like Dalida, are the actresses of the song.
In the manner of the chant’s French school instituted by Édith Piaf and then followed by C. Trenet, C. Aznavour, L. Ferré, J. Brel, and many more, the singer draws inspiration from his own life, from his own experiences similar to the theme of the song that he must interpret.
He slips into the skin of the character and plays with his emotions. The singer becomes an actor in the song, exactly like in the cinema.
This method will also inspire the legendary “Actor Studio.”
On the other hand, in the INA Archive video where Serge Lama sings the song. The situation is fundamentally different. He doesn’t play or interpret. He experiences the situation he describes concretely and simultaneously.
We even perceive him speaking directly to this woman through the camera. It is no longer a song. It’s a dialogue, an actual presentation. Without any artifice, he exposes her his distress and despair in the face of this unbearable situation.
We then see him literally liquefy on the TV set.
The worst comes when the lyrics emphasize the irony of the singer’s situation, who hears his own voice singing about his misfortunes.
An outstanding actor can make you cry in a movie, and a singer can, too. The proof here is with Lara.
However, in real life, when someone is depressed and thus exposes their misfortunes to you, even if it’s a very close person, it will rarely make you shed a tear unless you feel her throat tightening as she holds back her sorrow. But, it’s just what we call natural empathy inherent in each human being, depending on their own level of sensitivity.
The moment’s emotion is much simpler and much less spectacular than in the cinema or on stage, like here.
And yet, the one who is indeed suffering martyrdom at that moment is him, Serge Lama.
The actors or actresses and singers, as outstanding as they are, aren’t suffering physically.
Therefore, Serge Lama’s interpretation in this particular video is a textbook case, a singularity.
    Peace, folks. ☮👈😎

Hi, Lauren. One thing I noticed after viewing a few performances on the French version of The Voice is that the French take on singing is rather different from that of the Americans, and even other Europeans. Many French singers, especially when performing French songs, almost speak the song, rather than sing it. This makes their performances more like a spoken word performance than a musical performance, at least to my American ear. For me, this makes many French singers' performances much, much more dramatic than popular American or other European performers. I'd love to hear your take on this. JT

@@danielanjos7947 She is belgian, her father is flemish, but also has italian roots (her mother is from sicilia) and American roots ( her grandfather is from Detroit). She was raised in sicilia first then in Belgium so she speaks both italian and french as native languages. Later she moved to Canada and now she has two nationalities Belgian and Canadian.

The very beautiful, very strong but always velvety voice of Lara Fabian in her 4.2 octaves range.
Endless breath control, seamless connection of words and sentences, effortless singing.
Always simple clothing style when performing, very little make up, no or very little jewelry, always natural fingernails....... The only thing the audience gets from Lara is the sublime 4.2 octave voice and the emotional and expressive performances.

Classy women know that simplicity is needed to be classy: a lot of jewelry and fake fingernails are vulgar: just tasteless people use that! Besides that, the clothes she's wearing are sofisticated.
