We don't watch the game or the puck . We watch the guy in our crease or around our net , period ! Take your eye off him and and follow the puck , and someone will pass it to the guy you failed to see . Defensive backs ? Hit anyone who does not have your color jersey ( except the ref ) period ! Jack hit you if you were no where near the ball , it's called paying attention !
Conrad Dobler ? Dirty Dirty Dirty and that's from his mother ! He will admit to every charge with a smile ! He brought the bad guy " Heel " from Pro Wrestling to the NFL and I loved watching him play ! Like Steve Austin playing pro ball ? These younger guys ( I'm 71 ) can't say . Different era , different game ! Can't touch these guys anymore and you can palm the ball , double dribble and walk , in basket ball ? Give me ice hockey , at least we can still hit !
Jack Tatum annihilated Darryl Stingley and I still remember this like it happened yesterday. In other incidents there were rumors that Raider players used to hold the opposing player up so that Jack Tatum could inflict more pain.

I disagree on Tatum, different era and by all accounts a solid dude. Wesley Woodyard, Suh, Burfict & John Runyan come to mind as other guys worthy of this title.

There was another big headhunting game he had against the bills I think it was the same season. That guy is definitely worthy of his spot on your list.

The thing with Romanowski is he was defined by the spitting incident, but that’s not “dirty” - it’s disrespectful. Or, it’s at least a different definition of dirty. A dirty player is an injury risk. A dirty play is a cheap shot. It’s hitting (or kicking or biting or whatever) another player in a vulnerable position. Things like chop blocking or facemask tackling should get you on this list. Romanowski may be on it but not #1.

Jack Tatum played within the rules as well as he could, his partner George Atkinson belongs on this list before Tate!
Tatum was a huge PoS and so were the people who let him continue the dirty play that crippled and eventually killed Darryl Stingley.
What he deserves is to live that play and the aftermath as Stingley. Tatum will be forgiven, but he deserves so much.
