I smile when GOAT is used with Tom Brady in mind. Montanna played when a QB got hit a lot and WR's had a tough time against DB's. I am a Raider fan but Montanna is the best QB I have ever seen play the game.

      Uprite where are your examples?
Oh and quarterback s didn’t move in the pocket then. That’s why they got hit. They didn’t fall into the fall they fought the fall. That’s why they got injured.
Montana would throw over 5,000 yards today? So why isn’t it happening now? Why didn’t Marino teach 5,000 again? It was not because of the physical impossibility that the game was tougher then.

@@STP43FAN1 The rules were different back then. If the defensive player's momentum was carrying him forward when the QB threw the ball, and then he hit the QB after the ball left his hand, it would NEVER be called as "roughing the passer".
As I remember it, Montana would be hit on almost every pass. My memory is probably exaggerating, but only slightly.
I don't think you can say Montana (or Brady) had greater heart, that was a silly comment by @uprite88, but Brady did play in a "kinder gentler" NFL.

icbm literally everything you said is wrong. No the rules were not different. I was in Colorado when KC played Denver, and I have to say that was one of the best 2nd half games ever. Joe and Elway went back and forth like fencing masters. The final drive was Joe Montana at his best. Fantastic game. I often wonder how long he could have played if all the safety rules that are in effect today were in effect during his career. In truth, the 49s made the choice based on the injuries that Montana had gone through. They knew they had a sure thing with Young, and he had the added feature of youth and great mobility. Going to Young paid off for them with three additional Super Bowls. I love Joe, but injuries took a toll.

    • @susanrodriquez3757
      @susanrodriquez3757 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@arizjonesYoung actually won 1 Super Bowl as a starter not 3. As for mobility Montana was also quite elusive himself and was great at avoiding sacks and pressure even when he was older. Young was obviously a highly talented quarterback but basically what the 49ers did by keeping him over Montana was to extend their winning seasons and championship window. The reality of it was Montana very likely would’ve beaten the Cowboys in 1992 and won the Super Bowl if he had played.
The 49ers had the better roster in 1992 (had more stars), and the Cowboys weren’t quite the juggernaut they were about to become in the 90s. Steve Young wasn’t ready and threw up an absolute stinker when the 49ers were favored to win by more than one score and were expected to dominate the Cowboys. If Joe had played that likely wouldn’t have happened and they would’ve gone to the Super Bowl that year with the great talent they had. Of course if the 49ers had kept Montana, I highly doubt they would’ve gotten the likes of Deion Sanders which helped them win the Super Bowl in the 1994 season (and of course we wouldn’t of experienced the Hall of fame greatness of Steve Young until his career was nearly over).
In the end I think 1 Super Bowl was traded for another. If they had kept and started Montana I think they likely would’ve won a Super Bowl in 1992 but I also think the 49ers wouldn’t have gotten the talent necessary to defeat the Cowboys in 1994 with an aged Montana and therefore may not have won a Super Bowl that year like they did with Young. That’s kind of how I see it.

The Niners spending was so outrageous 19 times they spent more on the offense or defense than the combined salaries of 19 other teams. You put Brady or Mahomes on those NINERS teams where the NINERS paid just one offensive lineman more than entire teams 5 linemen and Brady would hve won 6 SB's there. As for toughness??? The thing about the Brady/Montana debate most people ignore, or are ignorant of, is the not the rules changes. It's the fact that the O-line in SF was not that good. Quite often Montana was being absolutely clobbered during games. I grew up watching the 49ers play in Candlestick, at the games (my parents had season tickets for all 4 of us to go together as a family). I am a lifelong Niners fan, and I can honestly say the line was often not the best on the field. Some of that has to do with rules changes, but most of it comes from the fact that the O-line was much like today's SF O-line in that they use lighter "more athletic" linemen who can pull and stunt for running plays, but it leaves them underpowered when facing tough, strong, bigger D-linemen. When you also look at the Defensive players Montana had to play against and how many went on to the NFL HoF vs who Brady played against, it's no contest who had the tougher challenges. It's Joe Cool the whole way. Joe also never got caught up in the kinds of cheating scandal that the Pats got caught up in. And it's not just "Spygate" either. When "Deflategate" happened Brady destroyed his phone rather than turn it over to the NFL's investigator. What was he hiding? That and the 4 - 0 and no INTs in the Super Bowl is why Montana is the GOAT and Brady will always be 2nd best.

Different era of football for Joe (and Elway, Marino, Simms, etc). These guys got hit and hit hard and often. Check out Jim Burt’s hit on Montana in the 9ers vs Giants playoff game. Modern day QB’s would wilt under those kinds of hits.

We used to watch the 49ers practice in Redwood City at the Red Morton Rec Center. There was a cyclone fence surrounding the field with green mesh to keep it "private".
It was the easiest thing to see through.
We'd ride our bikes there and watched Joe and all the other legendary regulars through the fence.
We had no idea how special it was at the time

The 1984 or 1989 49er teams playing in the Real era of NFL defenses would beat any of the Patroit teams by at least 2 touch downs. Joe Montana is the best NFL QB of all time. Love to see Tom Brady play against the 80s Bears, Giants or Redskin defenses playing with the 1980s rules.

Been a 49er fan since I was a little kid… And I’m 67 now John Brodie was my hero. Anybody remember 1972 divisional against Dallas… And the Preston Riley fumble. I busted my transistor radio over that.
When Joe came back against the Saints in the 1980 game I only could hear it on the radio… We didn’t have TV coverage at the time. But when he replaced Steve DeBerg, I could hear it in the announcers voice. I think it was Lon Simmons. Even though we finished six and 10 that year I knew greatness was just around the corner.

I’m not saying Tom Brady is not a great Quarterback, and I’m not saying he is not a first round HOF, but he couldn’t hold Montana’s jock strap. Brady never played against Lawrence Taylor, Mike Singletary, Reggie White etc. Brady was protected by the zebras and no defensive player could be 6 feet from Brady without the zebras pulling at the yellow flag.

I have been a Niners fan since birth basically, and the Ram fans were messing with me big time. At one point I yelled back at them: " The 49ers have a rookie on the bench named Joe Montana! This gets wrong the locker room dynamic with the quarterbacks. They didn’t oppose Young; they’d won with Young. The locker room got angry that players were quitting on the season; that’s why Ronnie Lott called the “screw the coaches” meeting with players to get them to focus on winning again. It wasn’t because they wanted Montana and opposed Young
