Scan tools are worth their weight in gold. My heart goes out to single women who get a check engine light before they need to get their car smog checked and are forced to go to a mechanic. My wife's 2002 Sienna since we bought it in 2017 has every year shown cat converter error codes, and usually before smog check time. A few days before smog check time I use Sea Foam fuel system cleaner in the tank and the spray version in the throttle body. My logic for this is carbon has built up on the cat converter so I cleaned it off. This fix has worked every year for the past three years including less than a week ago. After applying the Sea Foam treatment regimen I've cleared the codes with the scan tool then check the IM readiness. After the cat converter passes the van's computer cat converter test I get the car smog checked successfully. The $35 scan tool I bought off Ebay 4 years ago is well made and has literally saved us a couple thousand dollars in repairs.
I got a centec from harbor freight about 6 years ago that does all that stuff and more. They also have a camera and I recently pick a little reader up off EBAY for $30 that reads ABS. This stuff has been around for cheap for years... you just have to know where to look.
