Hi scotty could you (or anyone) please tell me why do I need to rev my car to put it in reverse? Whenever I put it in reverse it doesn't move unless I rev it up to around 2000 rpm I have a Lexus rx 2005 thanks in advance.
I knew a guy in Georgia who worked at an emissions inspection place next to an upscale neighborhood, in the late '80's/early '90's. He knew which vacuum hoses on various cars to unplug, to make them fail inspection. They'd fail, and if the customer seemed anxious, he'd say, "I'm not supposed to do this, but I know how to fix it". They'd ask "How much?" He'd answer, depending on how he read the customer, between $60 and $400. Depending on whether they watched him or not, he'd play it off, like there was a lot to it, when he really was just hooking the vacuum line, which he'd earlier disconnected, back up. He made a ton of money doing this as an older teenager, after he'd moved away from home (He'd grown up in his dad's service station working on cars, so that's how knew enough to know, which hoses did what). It worked, because most of the customers had money, but didn't have time to get second opinions or even worry about getting ripped off for between $60 and $400. He later became a very successful used car dealer and then a bank loan officer, since his experience in auto finance translated easily to home mortgages.
Or lease, so you don't need ANY of this. I haven't been to a mechanic in 20 years or spent any money. When you lease, it's THEIR car. They want it to be perfect and will pay for anything. I'm a heavy diesel mechanic, I take about 500lbs of tools and supplies everywhere I go. If I see someone pulled over by the side of the road, hazards flashing, more often than not I'll stop and help them out. Not for money, I got these skills and I have these tools to serve our country and others, most of the time its a small thing and the job is quickly and easily done or diagnosed and I'm on my way. Dishonesty and a gutter rat attitude will bring you down far further and sooner than it will anybody else, if you don't have integrity then what are you left with?
Ejay I wish I knew you in my state, after I took my car to get an oil change from another mechanic because it was the only one open at the time and now the EPC (Electronic Power Control) Light is on basically the car runs fine but if I exceed 4000 RPMs the car will basically jetlag and pull me back, I don’t want to have to take to a service center because I know they will overcharge me. My car is a 2015 Volkswagen Jetta SE TSI I literary just got it last month at 77,000 miles. Another problem I have is that my oil pressure light keeps coming up every 10 seconds while I’m driving I already changed the oil few weeks ago with a new oil filter and changed the oil sensor or oil pressure switch but the light still comes up. If anyone has a solution to this that can help me so I save $$$ please let me know
Years ago in Western Australia, that used to tell customers there brakes were so bad they couldnt leave the shop until they were repaired. There story was that it was against the law for them to release the car in that condition. I knew a little bit about cars, and knew my brakes were in good nick. Went there for a wheel alignment, the guy said, brakes are shot, cant release your car. I said to him, fine I'll just call the police and tell them you're refusing to give me my car. Handed the keys straight to me.

You go girl. Im doing the same. I can now change my oil, flush my brake fluid, change a flat, and do all the routine fluid checks and air filters. It is great when I can fix a problem on my own because I have been scammed many times. Now that I know more I can tell my mom was scammed many times over the years.

@@StrangerHappened dashboard leaks are actually real. all depends on how the AC's condensation is handled and if the heater core has sprung a leak. hot pressurized engine coolant spraying inside your cab is messy to say the least.
Once saw a guy trying to scam $75 out of some girl to jump start her car, then he was trying to convince her to get in his car and he would take her where she needs to go. When I came up on the situation I here her saying " no, I cant leave my car here" and him responding " come on just get in, ill take u there." No doubt this guy was no good when I asked her what's happening, she explained everything while that dude stood there real quiet and nervous looking,soon as I said I'd jump her car that guy took off real fast. I feel like I prevented something terrible from happening to her that day.
How blessed am I that as a teenager I learned how to work on my own car. Countless thousands saved and I get the satisfaction of knowing that I can fix it when it's broken.
I am now 46. When I was a teenager growing up, my dad did show me how to change the oil and the spark plugs, essentially all of the little stuff. With the Advent of TH-cam, I have recently replaced both upper and lower control arms on both sides of my truck. I have added Adda leaves to my truck I am going to be replacing my sister's brakes tomorrow. Fortunately she has got four wheel disc.
Something that many people don't do anymore when they get their car repaired, but should do. = Ask the mechanic for the old parts he replaced. If they can't provide them, it's likely that the only work they did was to write a bill for you. JMO.
Also check the parts given for any marks suggesting it came from a junk yard (where I come from, pieces from junk yards are marked). It's easy to give you some junk pieces laying around making you believe it were the parts that were replaced.
Slot of times these mechanics will show you a bunch of old parts they claim to have replaced on your vehicle without you even asking them, that's a red flag right there ,but I guess it's too late do anything about it. Lol
And also ask them straight up to see the repair they just made. I do it all the time. "Pop the hood and let me see it" "show me what I'm looking for just in case I start having issues again I'll know what to look for" etc
Some mechanics will do stuff like take a similar enough air filter, or just your air filter, and spray it with oil and cover it with debree so its filthy. Then do nothing and charge or sell you a new one and make a quick buck
We had a Toyota dealership scam us by saying we jumped my wife's Prius battery incorrectly and fried the ECU, that's why the dash, ac doesn't work. It turns out they took the dash fuse out and put it in a empty, dummy space. The amount of apology emails and calls we got that week was amazing.
Even Toyota dealerships ! Et Tu Brute? GMC dealers highly inflate their prices, use intimidation tricks and sell you non OME/parts at OEM prices. MIdas is totally non-transparent about the parts and pay commission on parts to their mechanics? And same. Chaarge OEM prices for lower quality parts. Independent shops, mostly the same dirty tricks. So, unless one has the knowledge, the ability, the strength and a garage/appropriate space to do repairs(even the simplest maintenance) one is destined to pay higher and higher prices for services.
It's smart to stay away from chains, but the Firestone down the street from me actually do their job, I was amazed. I actually wanted an oil change and tire rotation, but that actually came out and told me it wasn't ready for a rotation and didn't charge me.. Any other sleazy joint would jump at the chance to do a service especially if a customer requested it.
I get my oil changes at Walmart because for the price of their pennzoil full synthetic oil change is less than buying the oil and filter myself. +i don't get dirty. I always look for leaks and to make sure filter was changed and check the oil level before I drive away. But they don't try to upsell at all. And I get a written proof that it was done for my warranty just incase.

So much so that we’re currently driving and he’s playing a game with his young Sister called, “Let’s watch for cars that are money pits and yell, MONEY PIT!” Thanks for the laughs and the info. Carol... When you and your son pick out his 1st car, make sure that it has a weak 4 cylinder engine, with a sluggish automatic transmission. He will still push it to its max limits, but you'll know it's not a powerful car.
Years ago an elderly man brought a 2005 Cadillac DeVille into the shop, that he was having serviced at another repair facility. He requested an oil change, and the bushings greased up. Our oil change guy notified him that his Cadillac did not have grease fittings. The previous shop who had been doing his oil changes for many years, was charging him $8 for grease with each oil change. He had his attorney take pictures of the undercarriage, and submitted all the documents to small claims court. He ended up winning a lawsuit against the repair shop for scamming him out of money for many years.
Bruce Smith from what I understand. The man got more than what was scammed out of his wallet. The elderly man had his lawyer on retainer for many years. He got a pretty good settlement out of it too!

Went and got my oil changed at a shop. The so called mechanic came in the waiting room with fan belt and said this belts wore out and slammed it hard on the table in an attempt to intimidate me. I got up picked it up and slammed it down hard too and said. I didn't tell you to take it off you can just put it back on.
Good one! I would have told him he owed me money for messing with something on my vehicle that has absolutely nothing to do with the oil change I requested.
Your totally right Scott. Here in ventura County Ca. They tax you for repairing the road, but they never do until someone has an accident. I went to an auto shop and as soon as they saw my scan tool, they flat out refused to fix my car. I told them they would be hearing from the Better Business Bureau. Couple month's later they were shut down. Karma always wins when the truth comes out. That's why I love your channel. A honest mechanic is very hard to find theses days. True story. I changed the air filter. 3 weeks later, I got too lazy and just brought it to Jiffy Lube for an oil change. Later, the guy up front told me I need air filter, it’s very filthy. I looked at him straight in the eye and told him I just changed it a few weeks ago. He stammered and said he will check with the tech. He came back with a smile and told me he made a mistake and it was for another car. I smirked and told him while walking away that I also mark the oil filter every time I change it. When they rolled up my car, I told the tech to pop up the hood before he got out and checked the oil right in front of him and then looked under to see if the filter was also changed. Never went back ever. Never even brought any of my cars ever to a shop for maintenance after that.
bro this is why I do oil changes myself now. I had to pay jiffy lube because they broke my dipstick (multiple times) and always said it was broken before I got there. The last time I ever went, I knew my dip stick was fine when I got there and they literally snapped it in half right there in the shop! I said they owed me a new one right away and they sent me it for free. I was PISSED though.
Had a similar experience with “tire discount” place. My hubby and I priced a replacement tire w damaged sidewall at a TD, and they wrote the price and part number on a price of paper (register receipt), but I didn’t have time to repair it then. I told them I was planning to get it fixed in another town so they checked and said it was in stock (and wrote the town on the receipt). A couple days later, w/o my hubby, went to TD in another town closer to home. Had them change the tire bc I knew how much it would cost. When they were finished the bill was 2x the quoted amount. They said there was disposal fees, and valve stems and the tire was higher than quoted. I argued with them, I did not pay and they ‘did me a favor’ and “discounted” the price to the amount I was quoted. And I disposed of my tire myself on free dump day at our local landfill.
I purchased a 2003 Toyota Tacoma pre-Runner 2.7 L. It’s a great truck, but was plagued with a few issues from the previous owner, who sold it because he probably couldn’t fix it. So learn from me here: The check engine light would come on and it said that the EGR valve was faulty. $3000 later of constantly going into the mechanic shop and they couldn’t “figure it out”, I took it to a professional mechanic, and they found out that there was a BB placed in the vacuum line leading to the EGR valve. He took it out and I still have it to this day. Always check your vacuum lines and always find a trusted mechanic if you can. I called it the “$3000 BB“.
Thank you for sharing your wisdom! My scam story happened 10 years ago when I took my ‘04 Toyota Solara to my dad’s auto mechanic to get bearings, rotors, and brake pads replaced. After the repairs, one of my wheels made a loud sound with every rotation and it was louder while idling or coming to a stop. I took my car back to them to see if they could fix the sound. The owner told me to give it time as if the brakes needed to be broken in. Time passed and the sound continued so I took my car to a different shop for a second opinion. I explained the recent repairs and while my car was still up on the hoist, the head mechanic showed me that my rotor was wearing unevenly which was causing the loud sound. There were crosshatch marks on only half of the rotor, so it made sense. He said the rotor just needed to be shaved down. THEN he pointed out that my “new” rear brake pads looked like my car’s original brake pads. The front pads were charcoal-gray and looked new compared to the light-gray rear pads. So I took my car back to the shop that made the repairs and told them what another mechanic told and showed me. I asked them to fix my rotor for free since their work resulted in the loud sound AND because they scammed me on rear brake pads. They fixed the rotor for free, the loud sound was gone, and I never went back.
Thank you for being an honest mechanic that helps us avoid scammers. I was lucky, growing up my dad, uncles and my grandfather taught me about cars and what to look out for. Too many people today have no idea how their car works or how they may be scammed.
How true it is about dealers and ripping you off. I told the service writer: I need a state inspection and service engine oil and filter only. I already installed a new air filter. What does he do in the next 30 minutes? He brings my air clean air filter that I installed now is dirty, not by air flow but by mishandling it with dirty hands. I was so upset, I stopped going to the dealer for any service.
This is the most relevant video Scotty has ever made. Mechanics tried to scam my 80yo Mom that her rack & pinion needed replacing because it was leaking. Oddly, the leak was motor oil, not ps fluid....
A new Firestone garage was built near Indianland SC and sent out free oil change fliers to the community. I was driving an 01 GMC Sonoma that was aligned perfectly. I go in and use their coupon and they tell me that my steering linkage is loose. But luckily they had the parts in house to fix it in a couple hours. I laughed and said ‘I bet you do’. And never went back.
Unfortunately, you can't trust repair shops anymore. That's exactly why I do all the maintenance on my vehicles. I use an excellent car maintenance program called Automotive Wolf to manage the vehicle maintenance schedules and send me reminders when any service is due. It also tracks all the parts, expenses and performance. I currently have 2 vehicles with over 200,000 miles and both run like new.
I stopped taking my car to “quick lube” shops. I take my car to my favorite certified mechanic that I trust. Someone who is an honest businessman working for long term customer loyalty.
Quick lubes are such a scam. They'll put a little sticker in your window and tell you to come back in 4000 or 5000km. Most people dont know car oil lasts much longer and says how long right in the manual. I got fired froma quick lube when a woman asked when to come back and I told her after 12,000km or 1 year whichever comes 1st. She drove the same car as me and thats exactly what my car manual says.
As an experienced car repair person, just fixing my own cars, listen to Scotty, he has an excellent contribution to your knowledge of how the industry works. Don't trust garages in any shape or form, take someone who knows what is going on behind the spiel, please.
Everyone should. 2 times i had my car in the shop. Both times it was because of inexperience. I got a manual and taught myself. Turns out, it's not complicated just nuts bolts and ruling out possibilities. It sucks in the winter or summer when it's hot outside but the money I've saved and even made turning wrenches for others has made it worth it.
i do all my own work too but i brought my new-to-me truck in to have high pressure steel valve stems put in and i provided them the stems. well i didnt know back then the new 99+ ford f250 wheels have a smaller hole so they didnt fit. they didnt call me to tell me. they installed the half brass half rubber mid grade stems and charged me $8 a valve stem to do it! (when i bought it the truck only had the standard 50psi stems) i was so pissed. i had to leave on a trip the next day so i didnt make a scene but i could tell after talking to the owner he was just trying to line his pockets. well now ill never go back to that shop so his loss
Same. I am pretty intelligent. I can figure any bolt-on type stuff out. Too many sketchy mechanics out there. I don't trust any of them. Many of them do it just to screw someone over. They don't even get any money out of it because they work for a shop and they think they are doing the shop a favor.
I bought my car to a mechanic who told me I needed a gasket & told me there was oil seeping out. I had changed this not too long ago so I knew he was full of it! I noticed he had sprayed some oil around it!!!
As a tech in training I find myself noticing things wrong with people's vehicles like flat tire or bald tires. If I happen to get the chance to say something I just let them know and tell them to be careful. I dont wear my uniform outside of work and never bring up the shop I work for because it seems dishonest and I feel like people are less likely to believe me. I just want to make sure people are safe on the road. It's not just their lives that could be in danger during a blowout, but also those around them.

The wobbly tire story brings back an old memory. I remember riding with my brother in his beater of a car. This was 35ish years ago. Coming back from the mall, at a stoplight, a car that was behind us pulled up beside us and said," hey buddy, your rear tire is wobbling". I’m so lucky my mechanic works from home. When I take him my vehicle for repair he doesn’t mind me hanging around, He welcomes good conversation. A buddy of mine called him to fix his truck and he went to my friends work place. Fixed it there on the spot.
Maryland is another state that doesn't have the yearly inspections. The only time you need an inspection in Maryland is when you're buying a new/used car and need to get your initial tags and registration.

I went to a mechanic shop one time to get my oil changed and my air filter on my chevy malibu. Dude told me it'll be 300 dollars to order the "specially made air filter" for my chevy malibu. Then he said it'll be an additional 250 bucks for the labor...then he said that with the chevy malibu you also have to change the fuel filter too which would be an addition 300 bucks. I simply looked at him and said, the chevy malibu's generic filter is 30 bucks, and the stock air filter from gm is 60 bucks and also the chevy malibu does not have a fuel filter. He looked at me with a look of shock on his face. And I told him I was leaving to go take my business else where.
I run an irrigation company here in Houston that my father in law started over 40 years ago and we do VERY well simply because we’ve always had a policy of only fixing the stuff that absolutely requires attention. Most of the other sprinkler guys are in and out of business in a couple of years because they’re always trying to sell home owners a bunch of garbage that they don’t need, that and most other guys in my business have absolutely no idea what they’re doing. If you want to be successful in small business, honesty is the ALWAYS the best route.
I had a guy blow up my houses irrigation system, and then go out of business the next day practically. Still cant find someone who can fix it, not sure how to tell what is wrong. Starting to think of learning how to do it myself but not sure where to start.
What you say is true for SMALL business. But for BIG business it's often the opposite. They lie cheat and steal they're way to the top. Eating up all the honest SMALL businesses on the way.

They tried to pull that on me telling me that my car needed all sorts of work after a smog inspection. I asked the mechanic to give me all his information and told him I would take the car to my mechanic straight away. He started backing off and back stroking so quickly it wasn’t funny. I knew he was full of it because I know my car. Great advice.
Scotty in Florida, I took my car for an emissions inspection. It failed the test, it was a 1992 Camaro V8. I took it to PepBoys, paid for a diagnostic they did not find anything wrong with the car. I took it back again for an inspection it passed! Nothing was done to it in the interim. I'm glad we don't have emission inspections anymore. I lost $$$ on a wasted diagnostic at Pep Boys.
Very good video Scotty. Thanks. Reminds me of a scam I got into at a Sears Service Center. Went in for a brake noise since we had them done there. They looked at the brakes and said they were fine, but my tires "were so bad they couldn't legally allow me to drive it." NAturally they didn't have any used tires to sell, but they could open a line of credit for a FULL set of new ones. After those were paid off, we NEVER went back for ANY service and always referred people other places because of it.
You speak the truth! I personally have experienced an attempted hustle on brake pads needing done, identified urgently needed rear brake pads. I didn’t have time, but I told my brother. He bought pads, pulled the wheels. Perfectly good pads. There was something else the guy said was wrong, so I took it to my dealer. Nothing wrong. The service manager there told me about a customer who came in after being told his engine mount was leaking. The shady mechanic had squeezed grease on the mount and showed that to the guy. The service manager showed him an engine mount. They are solid rubber, as you know. So yes.
I worked at a dealership I won't name for a few years, to be eligible for the lifetime oil changes you would have to follow THEIR reccomended service schedule, not the owners manual or you would lose your eligibility. Of course the sales people wouldn't explain that prior to them buying the car. Service advisors are also paid commission, that should speak for itself.
During an inspection, the inspector replaced the fuel cap in my Toyota to a universal type. I didn’t know until I had a code. I took it to them and refused to leave without my cap. They ended up buying me a new one.
The inspection shops in Northern Virginia are always doing scams with inspections. They love to hit me with "oh, your headlights are dirty, they need to be cleaned for $100". But I can't find an honest one.
I got to say I got A Blue Driver for my 2004 GMC Yukon XL and I love it. It puts me a head the game. I mean it's not going to give you all 5he answers but it tells you more then I can even understand. It has already helped me from getting ripped off by mechanics. It's crazy how many mechanics have these expensive devices to check what's wrong with the car and don't even know how to use them.

I have a old Toyota I just went for new tires and the clerk didn’t bother up selling me, he told me himself that the mechanic just drove in and drove back out, he said he would usually upsell people but he can tell I keep mines maintained.
Yep, I do every thing I can. I have always changed my oil for several reasons, one being I would blow a gasket if I had to wait a hour or so to get that done, people in the waiting room hacking and coughing , kids crying .
That happens to everyone. Wtf are you on about? It is more noticeable with his voice, because he has a very high pitched voice naturally. He's almost always speaking at around a middle C, which is extremely high for a male.
YUP!!! Even lube shops are common scammers! Not only do they upsell needless wipers, fluids, etc, they often don’t change the oil plug washer, over-torque the oil plug, don’t lube the new oil filter gasket (IF they do change it), etc. I change my oil better, faster, cheaper than a roundtrip drive to the lube shop!!

Nice video. The one scam I hate is if you have transmission fluid and filters changed and they show you shavings and say your transmission needs rebuilt. When the shavings are really normal wear in many instances. Lots of scammers in transmission shops.

I bought one of those "8 oil changes for $100" coupons from a local mechanic shop. It also had 2 free diagnostics coupons. I took both my cars in (one was 14 yo and the other was 15 yo) and had them check them out. They came back with different things on both that were perfectly reasonable (like rear struts for one of them). The price to fix the issues, however, was far beyond what I was willing to pay. I just went down to Auto Zone, bought the parts myself, and did all the repairs in my yard. I suck at diagnosing issues, but I can do all the repairs myself. I've been working on cars since the late '70s (rebuilt engines and transmissions in high school), so swapping out sensors or changing a strut is no big deal.
When I was a kid back in the 70's our family drove down to Virginia. While there my father had new shocks put on the station wagon. Drove home back to Connecticut. The next day my mother took car to the Midas dealer for a new muffler. The Midas people told her that the shocks were bad and were leaking oil. So she gave them the OK to replace them. My father sure was mad because the shocks only had a few hundred miles on them.

I had bad experience at Mazda dealer in Australia once. I had my car transmission oil changed. The battery warning light was on when I pick up the car. The staff mentioned a new battery needed to be replaced. I drove the car and later on found out one of the cable from the alternator is disconnected. Then I never go to Mazda dealer again.
I had a oil change done at Goodyear Auto Center and they said I had an oil leak. I know for a fact that my car was not leaking oil. The engine was clean. When I looked under the hood they squirted oil all over the engine In random places and oil all over my struts.
Getting my car inspected a couple of years ago, they tried ripping me off. Last year, I went to a different place and they couldn't find a dang thing wrong with my car and kept trying to scare me into this service and that service. BEWARE.
When I worked at a dealership in VA years ago I did a state inspection and the worst thing found was the headlights were pretty far out of alignment. The service writer sold almost $2000 in repairs and claimed it was all things I wrote up.
I had a guy in Aransas pass TX drive up next to me while I was gasing up at a Walmart roll down the window and yell " Oh my God look at all that damage on your truck" he jumped out and started rubbing his hand on the side rear panel " I can fix it for 200 dollars right here, it will only take me 15 minutes". I told him " okay, let me move it to the air pump". I just drove off. There was no damage to my truck but it was a weird experience.
The oil on strut is one that has been tried on me a few times especially when I am pulling my trailer. I check for leaks often especially on the Interstate. I was warned by a mechanic to stand next to any mechanic when they are looking at anything under the hood. Twice in Needles I had the bad shock and bad strut scam attempt pulled on us.
My engine light came on. The mechanic wanted to do expensive test. A friend showed me that all I needed is lock the the gas cap correctly . Problem solved.

Hi scotty could you (or anyone) please tell me why do I need to rev my car to put it in reverse? Whenever I put it in reverse it doesn't move unless I rev it up to around 2000 rpm I have a Lexus rx 2005 thanks in advance.
I knew a guy in Georgia who worked at an emissions inspection place next to an upscale neighborhood, in the late '80's/early '90's. He knew which vacuum hoses on various cars to unplug, to make them fail inspection. They'd fail, and if the customer seemed anxious, he'd say, "I'm not supposed to do this, but I know how to fix it". They'd ask "How much?" He'd answer, depending on how he read the customer, between $60 and $400. Depending on whether they watched him or not, he'd play it off, like there was a lot to it, when he really was just hooking the vacuum line, which he'd earlier disconnected, back up. He made a ton of money doing this as an older teenager, after he'd moved away from home (He'd grown up in his dad's service station working on cars, so that's how knew enough to know, which hoses did what). It worked, because most of the customers had money, but didn't have time to get second opinions or even worry about getting ripped off for between $60 and $400. He later became a very successful used car dealer and then a bank loan officer, since his experience in auto finance translated easily to home mortgages.
Or lease, so you don't need ANY of this. I haven't been to a mechanic in 20 years or spent any money. When you lease, it's THEIR car. They want it to be perfect and will pay for anything. Still, Scotty is the best. My Lexuses (Toyotas best) run like tops. TOPS. I hardly know how to lift all my cars hoods up. (Insert smiling Owl here 🦉)

I'm a heavy diesel mechanic, I take about 500lbs of tools and supplies everywhere I go.
If I see someone pulled over by the side of the road, hazards flashing, more often than not I'll stop and help them out.
Not for money, I got these skills and I have these tools to serve our country and others, most of the time its a small thing and the job is quickly and easily done or diagnosed and I'm on my way.
Dishonesty and a gutter rat attitude will bring you down far further and sooner than it will anybody else, if you don't have integrity then what are you left with?

Ejay I wish I knew you in my state, after I took my car to get an oil change from another mechanic because it was the only one open at the time and now the EPC (Electronic Power Control) Light is on basically the car runs fine but if I exceed 4000 RPMs the car will basically jetlag and pull me back, I don’t want to have to take to a service center because I know they will overcharge me. My car is a 2015 Volkswagen Jetta SE TSI I literary just got it last month at 77,000 miles. Another problem I have is that my oil pressure light keeps coming up every 10 seconds while I’m driving I already changed the oil few weeks ago with a new oil filter and changed the oil sensor or oil pressure switch but the light still comes up. If anyone has a solution to this that can help me so I save $$$ please let me know

Years ago in Western Australia, that used to tell customers there brakes were so bad they couldnt leave the shop until they were repaired. There story was that it was against the law for them to release the car in that condition. I knew a little bit about cars, and knew my brakes were in good nick. Went there for a wheel alignment, the guy said, brakes are shot, cant release your car. I said to him, fine I'll just call the police and tell them you're refusing to give me my car. Handed the keys straight to me.
I have heard stories of shops doing crap like that, I didn't know it actually happened.

@@StrangerHappened dashboard leaks are actually real. all depends on how the AC's condensation is handled and if the heater core has sprung a leak. hot pressurized engine coolant spraying inside your cab is messy to say the least.

Once saw a guy trying to scam $75 out of some girl to jump start her car, then he was trying to convince her to get in his car and he would take her where she needs to go. When I came up on the situation I here her saying " no, I cant leave my car here" and him responding " come on just get in, ill take u there." No doubt this guy was no good when I asked her what's happening, she explained everything while that dude stood there real quiet and nervous looking,soon as I said I'd jump her car that guy took off real fast. I feel like I prevented something terrible from happening to her that day.

How blessed am I that as a teenager I learned how to work on my own car. Countless thousands saved and I get the satisfaction of knowing that I can fix it when it's broken.

I am now 46. When I was a teenager growing up, my dad did show me how to change the oil and the spark plugs, essentially all of the little stuff. With the Advent of TH-cam, I have recently replaced both upper and lower control arms on both sides of my truck. I have added Adda leaves to my truck I am going to be replacing my sister's brakes tomorrow. Fortunately she has got four wheel disc.
Something that many people don't do anymore when they get their car repaired, but should do. = Ask the mechanic for the old parts he replaced. If they can't provide them, it's likely that the only work they did was to write a bill for you. JMO.
Also check the parts given for any marks suggesting it came from a junk yard (where I come from, pieces from junk yards are marked). It's easy to give you some junk pieces laying around making you believe it were the parts that were replaced.

Slot of times these mechanics will show you a bunch of old parts they claim to have replaced on your vehicle without you even asking them, that's a red flag right there ,but I guess it's too late do anything about it. Lol
And also ask them straight up to see the repair they just made. I do it all the time. "Pop the hood and let me see it" "show me what I'm looking for just in case I start having issues again I'll know what to look for" etc
Some mechanics will do stuff like take a similar enough air filter, or just your air filter, and spray it with oil and cover it with debree so its filthy. Then do nothing and charge or sell you a new one and make a quick buck
We had a Toyota dealership scam us by saying we jumped my wife's Prius battery incorrectly and fried the ECU, that's why the dash, ac doesn't work. It turns out they took the dash fuse out and put it in a empty, dummy space. The amount of apology emails and calls we got that week was amazing.

MIdas is totally non-transparent about the parts and pay commission on parts to their mechanics? And same. Chaarge OEM prices for lower quality parts.
Independent shops, mostly the same dirty tricks.
So, unless one has the knowledge, the ability, the strength and a garage/appropriate space to do repairs(even the simplest maintenance) one is destined to pay higher and higher prices for services.
How To avoid getting scammed: Stop taking your car to Jiffy Lube and Firestone.

It's smart to stay away from chains, but the Firestone down the street from me actually do their job, I was amazed. I actually wanted an oil change and tire rotation, but that actually came out and told me it wasn't ready for a rotation and didn't charge me.. Any other sleazy joint would jump at the chance to do a service especially if a customer requested it.

I get my oil changes at Walmart because for the price of their pennzoil full synthetic oil change is less than buying the oil and filter myself. +i don't get dirty.
I always look for leaks and to make sure filter was changed and check the oil level before I drive away. But they don't try to upsell at all. And I get a written proof that it was done for my warranty just incase.
Just want to hop on here and let you know my 11 year old Son found you a while back and watches you all the time. So much so that we’re currently driving and he’s playing a game with his young Sister called, “Let’s watch for cars that are money pits and yell, MONEY PIT!”

When you and your son pick out his 1st car, make sure that it has a weak 4 cylinder engine, with a sluggish automatic transmission. He will still push it to its max limits, but you'll know it's not a powerful car.

Years ago an elderly man brought a 2005 Cadillac DeVille into the shop, that he was having serviced at another repair facility. He requested an oil change, and the bushings greased up. Our oil change guy notified him that his Cadillac did not have grease fittings. The previous shop who had been doing his oil changes for many years, was charging him $8 for grease with each oil change. He had his attorney take pictures of the undercarriage, and submitted all the documents to small claims court. He ended up winning a lawsuit against the repair shop for scamming him out of money for many years.
$8 for grease is pretty steep.

Went and got my oil changed at a shop. The so called mechanic came in the waiting room with fan belt and said this belts wore out and slammed it hard on the table in an attempt to intimidate me. I got up picked it up and slammed it down hard too and said. I didn't tell you to take it off you can just put it back on.

I went to an auto shop and as soon as they saw my scan tool, they flat out refused to fix my car. I told them they would be hearing from the Better Business Bureau. Couple month's later they were shut down. Karma always wins when the truth comes out. That's why I love your channel. A honest mechanic is very hard to find theses days. True story. I changed the air filter. 3 weeks later, I got too lazy and just brought it to Jiffy Lube for an oil change. Later, the guy up front told me I need air filter, it’s very filthy. I looked at him straight in the eye and told him I just changed it a few weeks ago. He stammered and said he will check with the tech. He came back with a smile and told me he made a mistake and it was for another car. I smirked and told him while walking away that I also mark the oil filter every time I change it. When they rolled up my car, I told the tech to pop up the hood before he got out and checked the oil right in front of him and then looked under to see if the filter was also changed. Never went back ever. Never even brought any of my cars ever to a shop for maintenance after that.

bro this is why I do oil changes myself now. I had to pay jiffy lube because they broke my dipstick (multiple times) and always said it was broken before I got there. The last time I ever went, I knew my dip stick was fine when I got there and they literally snapped it in half right there in the shop! I said they owed me a new one right away and they sent me it for free. I was PISSED though.
Had a similar experience with “tire discount” place. My hubby and I priced a replacement tire w damaged sidewall at a TD, and they wrote the price and part number on a price of paper (register receipt), but I didn’t have time to repair it then. I told them I was planning to get it fixed in another town so they checked and said it was in stock (and wrote the town on the receipt). A couple days later, w/o my hubby, went to TD in another town closer to home. Had them change the tire bc I knew how much it would cost. When they were finished the bill was 2x the quoted amount. They said there was disposal fees, and valve stems and the tire was higher than quoted. I argued with them, I did not pay and they ‘did me a favor’ and “discounted” the price to the amount I was quoted. And I disposed of my tire myself on free dump day at our local landfill.

I purchased a 2003 Toyota Tacoma pre-Runner 2.7 L. It’s a great truck, but was plagued with a few issues from the previous owner, who sold it because he probably couldn’t fix it. So learn from me here:
The check engine light would come on and it said that the EGR valve was faulty. $3000 later of constantly going into the mechanic shop and they couldn’t “figure it out”, I took it to a professional mechanic, and they found out that there was a BB placed in the vacuum line leading to the EGR valve. He took it out and I still have it to this day. Always check your vacuum lines and always find a trusted mechanic if you can. I called it the “$3000 BB“.
Thank you for sharing your wisdom! My scam story happened 10 years ago when I took my ‘04 Toyota Solara to my dad’s auto mechanic to get bearings, rotors, and brake pads replaced. After the repairs, one of my wheels made a loud sound with every rotation and it was louder while idling or coming to a stop. I took my car back to them to see if they could fix the sound. The owner told me to give it time as if the brakes needed to be broken in. Time passed and the sound continued so I took my car to a different shop for a second opinion. I explained the recent repairs and while my car was still up on the hoist, the head mechanic showed me that my rotor was wearing unevenly which was causing the loud sound. There were crosshatch marks on only half of the rotor, so it made sense. He said the rotor just needed to be shaved down. THEN he pointed out that my “new” rear brake pads looked like my car’s original brake pads. The front pads were charcoal-gray and looked new compared to the light-gray rear pads. So I took my car back to the shop that made the repairs and told them what another mechanic told and showed me. I asked them to fix my rotor for free since their work resulted in the loud sound AND because they scammed me on rear brake pads. They fixed the rotor for free, the loud sound was gone, and I never went back.
Thank you for being an honest mechanic that helps us avoid scammers. I was lucky, growing up my dad, uncles and my grandfather taught me about cars and what to look out for. Too many people today have no idea how their car works or how they may be scammed.
How true it is about dealers and ripping you off. I told the service writer: I need a state inspection and service engine oil and filter only. I already installed a new air filter. What does he do in the next 30 minutes? He brings my air clean air filter that I installed now is dirty, not by air flow but by mishandling it with dirty hands. I was so upset, I stopped going to the dealer for any service.

A new Firestone garage was built near Indianland SC and sent out free oil change fliers to the community. I was driving an 01 GMC Sonoma that was aligned perfectly. I go in and use their coupon and they tell me that my steering linkage is loose. But luckily they had the parts in house to fix it in a couple hours. I laughed and said ‘I bet you do’. And never went back.

Unfortunately, you can't trust repair shops anymore. That's exactly why I do all the maintenance on my vehicles. I use an excellent car maintenance program called Automotive Wolf to manage the vehicle maintenance schedules and send me reminders when any service is due. It also tracks all the parts, expenses and performance. I currently have 2 vehicles with over 200,000 miles and both run like new.

I stopped taking my car to “quick lube” shops. I take my car to my favorite certified mechanic that I trust. Someone who is an honest businessman working for long term customer loyalty.
Quick lubes are such a scam. They'll put a little sticker in your window and tell you to come back in 4000 or 5000km. Most people dont know car oil lasts much longer and says how long right in the manual. I got fired froma quick lube when a woman asked when to come back and I told her after 12,000km or 1 year whichever comes 1st. She drove the same car as me and thats exactly what my car manual says.
As an experienced car repair person, just fixing my own cars, listen to Scotty, he has an excellent contribution to your knowledge of how the industry works. Don't trust garages in any shape or form, take someone who knows what is going on behind the spiel, please.

Everyone should. 2 times i had my car in the shop. Both times it was because of inexperience. I got a manual and taught myself. Turns out, it's not complicated just nuts bolts and ruling out possibilities. It sucks in the winter or summer when it's hot outside but the money I've saved and even made turning wrenches for others has made it worth it.
My 1% would be when i take mine to get tires changed and balanced. I even toughed out the heater core by myself.
i do all my own work too but i brought my new-to-me truck in to have high pressure steel valve stems put in and i provided them the stems. well i didnt know back then the new 99+ ford f250 wheels have a smaller hole so they didnt fit. they didnt call me to tell me. they installed the half brass half rubber mid grade stems and charged me $8 a valve stem to do it! (when i bought it the truck only had the standard 50psi stems) i was so pissed. i had to leave on a trip the next day so i didnt make a scene but i could tell after talking to the owner he was just trying to line his pockets. well now ill never go back to that shop so his loss

Many of them do it just to screw someone over. They don't even get any money out of it because they work for a shop and they think they are doing the shop a favor.
I bought my car to a mechanic who told me I needed a gasket & told me there was oil seeping out. I had changed this not too long ago so I knew he was full of it! I noticed he had sprayed some oil around it!!!
As a tech in training I find myself noticing things wrong with people's vehicles like flat tire or bald tires. If I happen to get the chance to say something I just let them know and tell them to be careful. I dont wear my uniform outside of work and never bring up the shop I work for because it seems dishonest and I feel like people are less likely to believe me. I just want to make sure people are safe on the road. It's not just their lives that could be in danger during a blowout, but also those around them.
As a career heavy equipment and truck mechanic I can say I've never heard scotty say anything that I think is incorrect. I appreciate his straight forward honesty toward people with less mechanical knowledge

The wobbly tire story brings back an old memory. I remember riding with my brother in his beater of a car. This was 35ish years ago. Coming back from the mall, at a stoplight, a car that was behind us pulled up beside us and said," hey buddy, your rear tire is wobbling". I’m so lucky my mechanic works from home. When I take him my vehicle for repair he doesn’t mind me hanging around, He welcomes good conversation. A buddy of mine called him to fix his truck and he went to my friends work place. Fixed it there on the spot.
Maryland is another state that doesn't have the yearly inspections. The only time you need an inspection in Maryland is when you're buying a new/used car and need to get your initial tags and registration.
I have to admit, my wife & I are ADDICTED to this Scotty phenomenon. Is there a shrink out there, that can possibly help us out? All great stuff (and entertainment), but heck, we've got real chores we've got to do.

Most honest mechanic i ever found was a race mechanic for my mx5. Just a dude who loved cars and would talk to you for hours. Everyone else has tried to pull something shady, especially when my gf takes her car in

Scotty I’m a young lube tech at a dealership and it’s sad that people try to do that I look over vehicles to make sure they’re good to go not all dealerships are bad…. Love your vids I learn so much!!!!
I went to a mechanic shop one time to get my oil changed and my air filter on my chevy malibu.
Dude told me it'll be 300 dollars to order the "specially made air filter" for my chevy malibu.
Then he said it'll be an additional 250 bucks for the labor...then he said that with the chevy malibu you also have to change the fuel filter too which would be an addition 300 bucks.
I simply looked at him and said, the chevy malibu's generic filter is 30 bucks, and the stock air filter from gm is 60 bucks and also the chevy malibu does not have a fuel filter.
He looked at me with a look of shock on his face. And I told him I was leaving to go take my business else where.

I run an irrigation company here in Houston that my father in law started over 40 years ago and we do VERY well simply because we’ve always had a policy of only fixing the stuff that absolutely requires attention. Most of the other sprinkler guys are in and out of business in a couple of years because they’re always trying to sell home owners a bunch of garbage that they don’t need, that and most other guys in my business have absolutely no idea what they’re doing. If you want to be successful in small business, honesty is the ALWAYS the best route.
One should also consider Judgement Day which is on the horizon!
I had a guy blow up my houses irrigation system, and then go out of business the next day practically. Still cant find someone who can fix it, not sure how to tell what is wrong. Starting to think of learning how to do it myself but not sure where to start.
What you say is true for SMALL business. But for BIG business it's often the opposite. They lie cheat and steal they're way to the top. Eating up all the honest SMALL businesses on the way.

Thank you for this. So great for us women when we take our cars to the shop. Most mechanics don't think we know anything. I grew up with three brothers, so I knew a little about cars. I still had mechanics try to scam me
They tried to pull that on me telling me that my car needed all sorts of work after a smog inspection. I asked the mechanic to give me all his information and told him I would take the car to my mechanic straight away. He started backing off and back stroking so quickly it wasn’t funny. I knew he was full of it because I know my car. Great advice.
Scotty in Florida, I took my car for an emissions inspection. It failed the test, it was a 1992 Camaro V8. I took it to PepBoys, paid for a diagnostic they did not find anything wrong with the car. I took it back again for an inspection it passed! Nothing was done to it in the interim. I'm glad we don't have emission inspections anymore. I lost $$$ on a wasted diagnostic at Pep Boys.
I have had a mechanic say I needed a new air filter because it was too dirty, but I had just replaced it two days before. It was in perfect shape.
Very good video Scotty. Thanks. Reminds me of a scam I got into at a Sears Service Center. Went in for a brake noise since we had them done there. They looked at the brakes and said they were fine, but my tires "were so bad they couldn't legally allow me to drive it." NAturally they didn't have any used tires to sell, but they could open a line of credit for a FULL set of new ones. After those were paid off, we NEVER went back for ANY service and always referred people other places because of it.
You speak the truth! I personally have experienced an attempted hustle on brake pads needing done, identified urgently needed rear brake pads. I didn’t have time, but I told my brother. He bought pads, pulled the wheels. Perfectly good pads. There was something else the guy said was wrong, so I took it to my dealer. Nothing wrong. The service manager there told me about a customer who came in after being told his engine mount was leaking. The shady mechanic had squeezed grease on the mount and showed that to the guy. The service manager showed him an engine mount. They are solid rubber, as you know. So yes.
I worked at a dealership I won't name for a few years, to be eligible for the lifetime oil changes you would have to follow THEIR reccomended service schedule, not the owners manual or you would lose your eligibility. Of course the sales people wouldn't explain that prior to them buying the car. Service advisors are also paid commission, that should speak for itself.
During an inspection, the inspector replaced the fuel cap in my Toyota to a universal type. I didn’t know until I had a code. I took it to them and refused to leave without my cap. They ended up buying me a new one.
I love him, stirring it up real well. I’m tired, too, of these greedy dealer shops that are incompetent, anyway.
Been wrenching for 36 years and never scammed my customers. As a matter of fact I gave things away sometimes. Not all mechanics are scammers.

The inspection shops in Northern Virginia are always doing scams with inspections. They love to hit me with "oh, your headlights are dirty, they need to be cleaned for $100". But I can't find an honest one.
My experience in NOVA has been to stay away from the mechanic chains and to find the smaller family owned ones.
I got to say I got A Blue Driver for my 2004 GMC Yukon XL and I love it. It puts me a head the game. I mean it's not going to give you all 5he answers but it tells you more then I can even understand. It has already helped me from getting ripped off by mechanics. It's crazy how many mechanics have these expensive devices to check what's wrong with the car and don't even know how to use them.
Love it!! As a woman it used to piss me off when I enter any car place..sale, parts whatever and they assume I don't know a thing. Glad to know using my logic and gut saved me from a ton of scams. You proved me right. Have a great mechanic like you but you guys are rare and few unfortunately

I have a old Toyota I just went for new tires and the clerk didn’t bother up selling me, he told me himself that the mechanic just drove in and drove back out, he said he would usually upsell people but he can tell I keep mines maintained.

Yep, I do every thing I can. I have always changed my oil for several reasons, one being I would blow a gasket if I had to wait a hour or so to get that done, people in the waiting room hacking and coughing , kids crying .

That happens to everyone. Wtf are you on about? It is more noticeable with his voice, because he has a very high pitched voice naturally. He's almost always speaking at around a middle C, which is extremely high for a male.

YUP!!! Even lube shops are common scammers! Not only do they upsell needless wipers, fluids, etc, they often don’t change the oil plug washer, over-torque the oil plug, don’t lube the new oil filter gasket (IF they do change it), etc.
I change my oil better, faster, cheaper than a roundtrip drive to the lube shop!!

Nice video. The one scam I hate is if you have transmission fluid and filters changed and they show you shavings and say your transmission needs rebuilt. When the shavings are really normal wear in many instances. Lots of scammers in transmission shops.

I bought one of those "8 oil changes for $100" coupons from a local mechanic shop. It also had 2 free diagnostics coupons. I took both my cars in (one was 14 yo and the other was 15 yo) and had them check them out. They came back with different things on both that were perfectly reasonable (like rear struts for one of them). The price to fix the issues, however, was far beyond what I was willing to pay. I just went down to Auto Zone, bought the parts myself, and did all the repairs in my yard. I suck at diagnosing issues, but I can do all the repairs myself. I've been working on cars since the late '70s (rebuilt engines and transmissions in high school), so swapping out sensors or changing a strut is no big deal.

The engine light is actually the money light.
When I was a kid back in the 70's our family drove down to Virginia. While there my father had new shocks put on the station wagon. Drove home back to Connecticut. The next day my mother took car to the Midas dealer for a new muffler. The Midas people told her that the shocks were bad and were leaking oil. So she gave them the OK to replace them. My father sure was mad because the shocks only had a few hundred miles on them.
That's why you don't let women go to a repair shop without a guy 🤣 easier on the wallet lol

My lead tech at my shop always says "honesty is the best policy". That makes me feel good about where I work.
I had bad experience at Mazda dealer in Australia once. I had my car transmission oil changed. The battery warning light was on when I pick up the car. The staff mentioned a new battery needed to be replaced. I drove the car and later on found out one of the cable from the alternator is disconnected. Then I never go to Mazda dealer again.

I had a oil change done at Goodyear Auto Center and they said I had an oil leak. I know for a fact that my car was not leaking oil. The engine was clean. When I looked under the hood they squirted oil all over the engine In random places and oil all over my struts.

Getting my car inspected a couple of years ago, they tried ripping me off. Last year, I went to a different place and they couldn't find a dang thing wrong with my car and kept trying to scare me into this service and that service. BEWARE.

When I worked at a dealership in VA years ago I did a state inspection and the worst thing found was the headlights were pretty far out of alignment. The service writer sold almost $2000 in repairs and claimed it was all things I wrote up.
I had a guy in Aransas pass TX drive up next to me while I was gasing up at a Walmart roll down the window and yell " Oh my God look at all that damage on your truck" he jumped out and started rubbing his hand on the side rear panel " I can fix it for 200 dollars right here, it will only take me 15 minutes". I told him " okay, let me move it to the air pump". I just drove off. There was no damage to my truck but it was a weird experience.

The oil on strut is one that has been tried on me a few times especially when I am pulling my trailer. I check for leaks often especially on the Interstate. I was warned by a mechanic to stand next to any mechanic when they are looking at anything under the hood. Twice in Needles I had the bad shock and bad strut scam attempt pulled on us.

My engine light came on. The mechanic wanted to do expensive test.
A friend showed me that all I needed is lock the the gas cap correctly . Problem solved.
