This song came about when the band was trying to write songs for a new album. They were in a cabin and couldn't come up with anything, making them frustrated. Not helping the mood was the gloomy and rainy weather outside. Until one morning the rain had stopped, the sun was shining again and the sky was a clear blue. Inspiration struck and a hit song was born.

Mr. Blue Sky is the fourth part of Concerto For A Rainy Day, a four part suite. It starts with Standing In The Rain which transitions to Big Wheels which transitions to Summer and Lightning and then finishes with Mr. Blue Sky. Best listening experience is to hear the whole Concerto as a whole.
Jeff Lynne wrote Out of The Blue which is a double album while staying in a Swiss Chalet for a couple of weeks. Most of the time in inclement weather. Eventually that led to the weather breaking to Blue Skies. So inspiration hits in the strangest ways sometimes. 😅

I must have literally listened to this utterly magical, masterpiece of a song hundreds of times over the years now . In a recent poll it was voted the second most feel good song. No matter if you're a classical fan, rock fan or pop, you can't fail to get something from it. The 1 minute 20 seconds crescendo makes it totally unique. The choir, the strings combine to bring it to such an incredible climax. It is their most marketable song probably. A close second would be' Livin Thing ' for me. Jeff Lynn is, let's be honest,a musical Brummie genius. These songs don't date. As fresh and original as they were back in the 70s. That's the test of really great music

Roy Wood and Jeff Lynne formed ELO from the ashes of a great sixties band "The Move". ELO was intended to be a very experimental band, combining rock and orchestra. Roy Wood unfortunately left ELO shortly after their first album released. But Jeff Lynne stayed on to take the group to superstardoom. :-) I would suggest listening to "Overture 10538" from ELO's first album to hear the origins of the band's orchestral overtones.

You have to remember that in many ways, ELO was sort of a more modern version of the Beatles, taken to the Nth degree if you like. Jeff Lynne has that amazing ability to produce songs that are both complex and simple, you can catch the melody very quickly but there are a thousand details below the surface, just like much of the Beatles more complex works. ELO created amazing pop tunes that everyone knows or remembers. The vocal sound / combination is pretty much something they stuck with all the way through.
You can go check the Travelling Wilburys to get an indication of just how powerful Lynne's production and vocal styling was, even up against some of the true greats of the generation.

That was one of the most delightful, insightful, articulate, downright enjoyable reaction vids I've ever seen. Thank you, Lolli, for making my day brighter. I was around when this song was released. It is a classic.; a five-minute, mini symphony. Interestingly, I was at a birthday party, oh, about 10 years ago now; a combined 50th and 18th for mother and daughter. The party crowd was thus a mix of old folk and 18 y-os who would have been just unfertilised eggs when MBS was in what we used to call 'the charts'. This song was played. All the youngsters sang happily and loudly along, apparently familiar with all the words. They don't write 'em like that any more.

This was the opening song on "Guardians of the Galaxy 2". Your reaction made me think of little Groot dancing all over the place😀

I’ve always loved this song, but that scene is just welded into my memory now. Such a happy song played during a chaotic moment and Groot is just living his best life.
But yeah, the Guardians soundtracks were incredible. Great music.

You have such a wonderful voice - able to accurately model almost anything you listen to, immediately. For the life of me I can't imagine why you are not also creating your own music also. I am sure your voice could carry almost anything.

Guardians of the Galaxy vol.2 opening credits to this song with Baby Groot dancing is everything. I can't hear this song now without seeing it in my head. ❤
Just wanted to say that my cheeks are hurting just a bit from smiling the whole time I watched this reaction/analysis.☺ Joyous. 💞🧚‍♀️

The short vocoder section at the end says "please turn me ovrr" because that whole side of the original vinyl record was designed as one piece, titled "Concerto For a Rainy Day". The album was recorded in Switzerland, where it was constantly raining and storming; Jeff Lynne was really brought down by the weather until the last Fay when the sun finally came out. That's what this song is about... His relief and joy of finally seeing a blue sky.
The indie band Pomplamoose does a really good jam cover of this song on their channel. The rhythm is the same but there is a fair bit of improv.

Bev Bevan did most of the voice synthesizer work...I was so lucky to see them in person back in that day. I've lost track of how many times I saw them in concert over the many decades (I'm 61). Such perfect performances each and every time. Grateful for the kinds of memories my generation have of real musicians...artists.

Another happy song that that you might enjoy, is also a vocal harmony treat. "It's Love" by King's X.
They are a rock power trio that all sing in harmony. They have been described as The Beatles meet Metallica meet Sly and the Family Stone. They've been one of my faves since '89.

As a musician of many many years, I always love reactions who are the reactor really does know what's going on and is good at explaining it to a wider audience, while still giving people like me something more substantive to chew on.
This song came out when I was in junior high and I associate it with my first girlfriend because she bought the album and we played it all the time and then this song was on the radio constantly. It was such a great summer time song.
You mentioned something about your sobriety, so if that is indeed the case then congratulations to you.
And, as ChatGPT would conclude things, it is worthwhile to note that not only are you hot as hell, I really love your voice in that lower register.

ELO was the second concert I ever attended. There was something very different and more sophisticated about their sound than most other bands at that time. Chicago also had a different sound than the run of the mill rock band.

Best analysis video I've seen. We know music affects emotion or mood. This song proves that all through. Anyway, not telling you anything.😊 You and ELO are amazing. I'm happy for the day. Thanks! BTW, this song is used to open Guardians of the Galaxy part 2...the orchestral and choral part at the end are used to good effect in it.

Jeff Lynn is one of my favorite singer/songwriters. So creative with songs like Mr Blue Sky and The Diary of Horace Wimp and albums like Time. I bought Time back in the 80's on vinyl and have it on my phone playlist now. There's also his work with The Travelling Wilburys and all the backing vocals etc he's done for other great singers. A seriously brilliant human!
