I bought this album when it was first released. Didn’t know what to expect. I was mesmerized through the entire album. As I watch the reactions of you young people (I’m 60 by the way) I am tickled to death to see how the reactions are as fresh as I remember mine being. Music today doesn’t compare to the elaborate production and attention to detail that Jeff Lynne envisioned in his music. Your reaction is priceless my friend. Keep ‘Em coming.

My older sister had this album. I'm pretty sure I listened to it more than she did. Seven year old me felt Mr Blue Sky in the core of my being. It's still my go-to when I need to find my happy.

I agree with you about the music we had compared to what’s produced now. I always hesitate to be just another older person (I’m 70) saying “They don’t make it like they used to!”, but I’m saying it. There’s just no comparison. Great comment 🌺✌️

Kind of reminds you how you felt when you used to listen to them. I watch way too many reactions, but I know exactly what your talking about. i don't go as far as saying they don't make them like they used to. I've been turned on to some new stuff that made me jump into a mosh pit way past my prime by watching reacts.

You were so mesmerized by the last instrumental part of the song that you didn’t recognize the “robotic voice” at the end (actually made with a vocoder) says “Please Turn Me Over”. Remember most of us when this was released had it as a double album so to hear side 4 we had to flip the album over on the record player

ELO has more songs that can get stuck in your head than almost any other band, including this song. Whether it wins or not, go ahead and react to the album. Other songs to check out is "Turn to Stone" (my personal favorite), "Don't Bring Me Down", "All Over the World", "Roll Over Beethoven", and so many others. Jeff Lynne is one of the greatest singer-songwriter, producer, arranger, and musicians.

ELO seemed to jump the shark when they did the Olivia Newton John collaboration but up through Discovery they were killer good. They (in my opinion) became a casualty of Lynne's overproduction on their later albums like Time. I loved the cut Twilight and a few others from that album but the production was so harsh it was hard to listen to the whole thing.

Symphonic rock - try the Moody Blues (nights in white Sati live with an orchestra) from 1967 who used orchestral arrangements widely in their recording. The Moody Blues came from the same English Midlands city as ELO - Birmingham. Alternatively, you might try Procul Harem, with the Danish National Concert Orchestra in concert, with A Whiter Shade of Pale, also originally from 1967. I first saw ELO live in concert while at University in 1972, they were fantastic.

I managed to see Jeff Lynn at the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury about 5-6 years ago, and it's still one of the BEST gigs I've ever witnessed.
He (and ELO) just write some of the most uplifting music, with the unique strings, synths, and other sounds.
It's a combination of sound you don't really hear anywhere else. Amazing.
It was quite muddy that year, but most people in the field were dancing and moving around.
There was an older guy about 20ft in front of me who was really going for the dance moves. It was great to see. lol

No this wasn't the first instance of symphonic rock the Moody Blues combined with an orchestra in 1967 to create the album "Days of Future Past". A concept album about a day from morning to night. The best songs on the album are 'Tuesday Afternoon' and 'Nights in White Satin'. The Beatles also dabbled in using symphonic rock on several songs. But I think you are accurate in calling ELO a symphonic rock group after all they had a permanent 3 man string section in their group.

That is a taste of why the album, Out of the Blue, is a masterpiece. There were some other tunes from this album that tended to get more air time than Mr. Blue Sky, when the album was first released. But in the years since, the song was featured in a few movies and it renewed people's interest. It's as popular today than ever before. It was also voted the most happy or upbeat song of all time, I believe. And it is. It's very difficult to not have a smile on your face and to move along with the tempo during this tune. Amazing songwriting, and you would not regret going back immediately and listening to the entire concerto. It's meant to be listened to as a whole piece, telling a story along the way. Excellent reaction as always!

Do a reaction of Turn to Stone. Watch the Wembly concert version. Look at the size of that crowd. No one is sitting. Look at the joy on their faces as they are singing along with the songs that they love.

I love this guy's reaction. It is exactly how I feel because the music is brilliant and it's happy we don't hear stuff like this today I'm 74 years old and I miss intelligent, creative, beautiful lyrics, enchanting melodies and complex themes that makes you feel something. This is a brilliant brilliant group of musicians that should've gotten much more recognition than they ever did

ELO is so painfully underrated in the pantheon of rock and roll. So far ahead of the game. My guess as to why it wasn't more popular is due to disco being a thing during their most prolific moment in music.
This song gives me a very Beatles-esque feel to begin with, and then blows me away with the arrangement and orchestration. Jeff Lynne is a musical genius, and any of his work is worthy of a reaction IMHO.

I was blessed to see ELO perform live in Milwaukee, WI when this album first came out in 1978. An amazing concert complete with a state-of-the-art laser light show to complement their stage performance. Best concert I ever attended, just happened to be my very first at 17 years of age. Jeff Lynne is an absolute genius in the entertainment music industry.

When John Lennon was asked which musical direction the Beatles would have taken, had the not split up, he said that they "would probably ended up sounding like ELO".
    Great reaction.

The "Please Turn Me Over" comes from the album. This is the last track of side 3 (a full Concerto) and needs you to play side 4.

Mr. Blue Sky should have done better on the charts, I agree, but it had a lot of worthy competition when it was released. It was an awesome time for a music loving teenager, like myself, to exist. Just a few of the singles also released in January 1978: "Le Freak" (Chic), "Reminiscing" (Little River Band), "Kiss You All Over" (Exile), and "Hopelessly Devoted to You" (Olivia Newton-John) from the blockbuster hit movie "Grease." The Moody Blues was ahead of ELO with their inclusion of orchestral music to their songs in the late 1960's. The Beatles also included orchestral sounds in some of their music, whom Jeff Lynne has a huge appreciation for. I am so glad you reacted to this!

Yes, ELO were heavily influenced by The Beatles album Sgt. Pepper and the Lonely Hearts Club Band and The Beach Boys album Pet Sounds. Some other early symphonic rock songs are Nights In White Satin by The Moody Blue and A Whiter Shade of Pale by Procol Harum. Pink Floyd and Yes also progressed from there along with ELO.

This song got renewed interest when it was the opening song of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2, with young Groot dancing amidst a monstrous battle.
Loved the reaction... it's impssible to listen to this song and not have a huge happy grin.

I am now 60 years old and ELO always was the greatest band of all time to me, even greater or at least as good as the Beatles and finally here is a young man recognizing the greatness of ELO. I exploded into tears again (as so often before) watching you, listening to this song. Thank you for another wonderfull moment with this music! By the way, there are quite many more songs from ELO, that would be worth listening to. Mr. Blue Sky is just one fantastic song in an ocean of ELO gems.
How about Ticket to the moon oder Twenty first Century man oder Last train to London or steppin out or fire on high or tightrope or or or or.... I would higlhy apreciate you doing more from my favorite band. But thank you for this.

ELO's Mr Blue Sky is one of my all time favourite tracks... It's upbeat for the most part... But right at the end... The song mellows right down... And almost puts you into a trance of calming musical waves... I adore listening to ELO... They've made some amazing music over the years... If i had a choice of only one concert to attend before i died... An ELO concert would be hands down my number one choice... They're all wonderful artists and musicians.
