In Maijden really shows off Maria's vocal abilities and the primal screams from the men will jar you everytime.
Yes "In Maidjan" th-cam.com/video/kmWTZ3KfnXE/w-d-xo.html shows off the extreme quality of Mariah's voice
Completely agree. It's also kind of insane to consider that this was their first ever show.
100% agree, while Kirigsgaldr is a fantastic tune, In Maidjan is a better example of their individual skills.
I 100% agree.
PLEASE FOLLOW UP WITH THAT SONG
This is a rabbit hole you DEFINITELY want to go down.
Yep,she will never be the same now.
Now Wardruna :D
and Sowulo and a bunch of others lol
Skäld is a favorite in this genre. Definitely an experience.
You're not watching a concert. You're involved in a ritual. It's mesmerizing and, as a Pagan, it speaks to my soul. The whole event is just beautiful.
This was my thought as well.
Dude, I’m Christian and this music speaks to my soul on a primal level.
@jamert8820 Pagan religions are 100s of years old than Christianity, which is why you resonate with you and deep in your soul. I was "raised my Christian nationalists and always felt disconnected and sadness . The sadness was that complete damation of Pagaism. I made my 1st yule alter at around age 10yrs old. Why because I felt it was within my soul. Just look to the sky and phase of moon and it's there withing your self. As for my Christian nationalists family , I was ostracized and family members begged my to ask Jesus for forgiveness. . Forgiveness for what ?!!💔 look to the skies being Pagan has always been within me for 1000s of years. 💚So mote it be
Yep ,today i have my Donar(Thor) Hammer@@Kim-J312
Yeah, i saw them at a festival, best act of that weekend. It was very trance inducing!
Heilung's non-live studio recording video of "Anoana" is going to blow your mind.
the video is pure ART ❤
Seconded! Beat me to it!
I would love to see her react to this one. Especiallu with the Kulning tradition being a part of the song.
I personally enjoy the live version much more. but it is also the song that sparked my interest in them so there is that.
Was hopping into the comments to recommend exactly this. It's absolutely stunning.
I struggle with a lot of mental issues, PTSD, depression, etc, and occasionally will just take a day tripping on mushrooms to try to work through some things. I was familiar with heilung, and thought mixing that in would be an interesting addition to the trip. I ended up sitting in my room with Anoana on a loop for about 6 hours. It changed my life. I don't like to exaggerate, but I'm genuinely, fundamentally in a better place since that experience, and the song played a huge part in it.
@@TheGoIsWin21great testimony.
The language is Old Norse, Proto Norse and obviously English. It is about a poor but peaceful village that is forced to take up arms and defend themselves from an attack by an enemy coming from across the sea.

It hungers to be hit
And wants to have a hundred sisters
In the coldest state of their existence
They may dance the maddest
In the morass of the red rain
Beloved brother enemy
I sing my sword song for you
The lullaby of obliteration
So I can wake up with a smile
And bliss in my heart
And bliss in my heart
And bliss in my heart
Coexistence, conflict, combat
Devastation, regeneration, transformation
That is the best I can do for you

To melt away all moons
It will make the old fires of purification

BEST COMMENT EVER IN THE HISTORY OF COMMENTS!!! THANK YOU, AGAIN!!!
I think (but dont quote me on this) that "Iilir men æro þeir .... Er a-mela os!" (x8) means something like 'listen men that have ears... to this story of ours'
Wow, thank you very much. That surprised me.
Old Norse is what I study with the Rune gild
Yeah, these guys came out of nowhere a few years back and dominated Castlefest as a virtually unknown act. That alone is insanely impressive. Steal the show at a metal festival without actually playing Metal, lol. Granted Metalheads have eclectic tastes, but that's still virtually unheard of. They got some backlash for using a human femur as a drum stick in their early shows. But it's a very unique style, very theatrical.
It's metal in spirit
Castlefest isn't a metal festival, though, but medieval/fantasy.
If songs like Alfadhirhaiti aren't metal, then nothing is…
@@onearthonelegionpaleo metal ...metal before metal or as Douglas Adams put it ... the rest of you guys meantime, keep banging the rocks together.😉😎😂🧙🏼♂️

VERY enjoyable reaction!!!! Highly recommend Anoana by them for your next reaction. The female vocalist is Maria Franz. Elizabeth (Charismatic Voice) did a teatime interview with her that I recommend checking out when you have time.
but the live version please
That interview was great and Anon is a lot more accessible for a first time listener.
Damn autocorrect Anoana
The live version that came out not to long ago is incredible
I can't entirely remember if you've reacted to them before but if not I think you'd enjoy Wardruna. Specifically their song "Helvegen" which they have a great live version that features Aurora.
Not a song, but a whole experience. Going to see them in September.
Same here! Stuttgart, Germany!
You'll love it!
Me too, Amsterdam
Also going to see them in September
Going to see them this month!
I find it interesting that at my old age (68) I have fallen in love with this music. Thanks for the reaction
It's the hypnotic tribal rhythm. I had the same reaction when I first heard Wardruna and Heilung. The brain is programmed recognize rhythm and there's this really primal feel to it. I think it's like genetic memory or something. It somehow feels really familiar. Like something you've known always.
Argghh.
It's in yer bones.
Me too.
Regards England
I'm 64 sind I love it
I just turned 67 and I saw them in 2020 in Montreal, it was the last show I saw before COVID.
@@Zeitgeist6 I love American indigenous music. I listen to it all the time what I find interesting is that a lot of the background music the beat and other instruments sound almost the same. After listening to a lot of different music from around the world I am convinced that it all comes from one source.
Welcome to 9 A.D.
It's a cold and damp, foggy morning you are walking in formation with thousands of your brothers in arms..... You are LEGIONAIRE of the greatest army to exist!!
You hear this faint sound in the distance growing to a unfathomable level of noise..... You are in Teutoburg Forest.... And tonight you will be dining with your gods.....

And then some super corny, 90's tribal trance band starts cosplaying and ruins everything. lol
I was at this live performance at Castlefest in The Netherlands, I literally felt like this performance brought me in a trance. It was by far the best performance I've ever seen, and apparently it was their first live performance as well...
"best performance I've ever seen"
So you'vee seen nothing yet, have you?
I have seen some live performances in my time: Status Quo, AC/DC, Mother's Finest, Spock's Beard, Pink Floyd, X-mal Deutschland, Proclaimers, Scorpions, D:A:D, Judas Priest, Motörhead, Uriah Heep, 24/7 Spyz, Anthrax, Suicidal Tendencies, Living Color, Iggy Pop, Faith No More ... many, many smaller bands. And all of them were better than this wannabe viking nonsense.

@@michaelshover No excuse to cheap for you, or what?
I didn't even notice most of them were rock'n'roll affine. Hubby and me care more about the musicality, virtuosity and quality of songwriting. All of which are sorely amiss at Heilung. C'mon, admit it, Heilung's a circus act, not a real pop band.
@@orcaflotta7867 I think what they do requires skills. Do you know any better folk kind of music or is that something you don't like? Maybe it is some kind of circus act, but I still like the sound. I think what they do is a reenactment of what they think represents the history of how the music sounds and what was worn. I don't know enough of the information about the cultures and all that to judge if it's realistic to what they intend to represent or not.
@@michaelshover "I think what they do requires skills."
Yes, no doubt.
"Do you know any better folk kind of music or is that something you don't like?"
What I don't like is fake. This ain't folk music but a highly stylized poppy fantasy. Fake.
In Heilung's music Kai routinely sings cleanly but also uses a form of Kargyraa with varying degrees of distortion, and then does straight up black metal screams. Kargyraa transitions into screams VERY easily and thus you usually get a blend of both going on within a song, just gotta drop primary cord phonation, increase compression and play with mouth shaping.
Heilung's "Rituals" are spellbinding live! I saw them last fall in Greensboro NC and I am driving 5 hrs to Washington DC to see them again next month. I'm 79 and an avid concert addict. They are among the top three acts I've ever seen in my lifetime. Only reason I can't choose #1 is because they're completely different genres and all excel in their particular niche.
Born in 79....
Dont know why i wrote this...
Love from Germany
I was at the Greensboro one as well. And am considering going to DC! I had no clue who they were previous to coming to Greensboro and boy did they change my life.
You sound cool💕
I was at that NC show. Just got back a week or so ago from their show at Red Rocks. Beautiful plus a full moon.
having worked at a bar at midgardsblot when they played there, the way they captured the audience was simply amazing, it was like the audience entered a trance as no one said anything while they played.
I love that your response basically mirrors everyone's first time seeing this video; just pure enchantment and an inability to stop watching. It's such a primal piece of music. Hypnotizing and beautiful.
heilung is like mesmerizing magic, taking me on a brand-new journey each and every time
Hi, the song Anoana from them is absolutely fantastic.
Your face while the build up is priceless...haha. I love this performance so much - it´s raw, it´s almost ancient, it´s unique. Greetings from Germany and thumbs up!
For more by this group, I'd recommend 'In Maijan' and 'Alfadhirhaitl' from the same concert. The first song has more vocal range from Maria; the second is more like a village getting ready for battle and asking for Odin's blessing.
Another band that I discovered much more recently is Otyken. Sounding a bit like a mix of Heilung and The Hu, the members are from a native tribe in Siberia.
Nothing beats listening to Alfadhirhaitl at an irresponsibly high volume in the car. It's the kind of experience that makes you feel like you need to make a spear.
Otyken is so good!
@@SurfacePatternsI ABSOLUTELY AGREE WITH YOU!
IT'S FABULOUS TO FEEL & UNDERSTAND YOUR ANCIENT BLOOD AGAIN!!!
"These two gentlemen"...I know it shouldn't, but that made me LOL. Heilung are something else aren't they? By 'something else', I mean unique. They've developed their own culture to go with their sound. I can't get enough of them.
Everybody who likes the voice of Maria Franz have to listen to Songleikr- Ulvetime. Its almost just her singing and playing an instrument. Very beautiful.
Love it
"Songleikr - Ulvetime" means Playsong - Wolfhour. Lots of interesting language in her music. She sound very Norwegian when singing.
The vocal fry part are the only English lyrics.

“The lullaby of obliteration” is one of my favorite all times lines.
Also, this is what I listened to during my vasectomy. True story.
Nice you found Heilung. I would highly recommend seeing Wadruna feat. Aurora "Helvegen". One of the best live performances i ever saw from her and Wadruna. Also recommended with english subtitles on, because its sung in norse. It drives me to tears every time i hear it.
It's not sung in Norse, it's just in regular Norwegian, the only part of Helvegen that's norse is the spoken word poem at the end.
In an interview, it was mentioned that their intent is to put the audience into a sort of trance.
As part of the audience of this particular live show, I can say they succeeded 😄
A trance to suite their name Heilung or "healing" people's souls no doubt. I feel better after listening to them at least.
Great reaction, Bethany! You looked absolutely mesmerized. Heilung is a unique musical experience.
I am so happy that you delved into this incredible group. Watching you experience this for the first time has been such a pleasure.
It is so hard to recommend a first song for someone to listen to because it is just so different, and there are so many songs that are also so different from each other. This song definitely has a massive impact on the first-time listener, so it is a good choice. My suggestion for a song, that shows off Maria's massive vocal talent, I suggest the song "In Maidjan." From this same performance at Castlefest.
Thanks for this reaction. It will probably be the reaction highlight of my week.
Was lucky enough to see them in October. Extremely spiritual. One of a kind show.
I saw Heilung here in Portland. It was a phenomenal show
Enjoyed your reaction. Heilung (healing in German) is an experimental folk music band who draws inspiration for their music from texts, runic inscriptions and other artifacts from Iron Age Northern Germanic people and the Viking Age. They call their music amplified history and their goal is to connect modern society with the beginnings of humanity through music. They call their shows Rituals and having been to one it is a very apt description. It is a very spiritual experience. The show starts with all the performers coming on stage and a blessing given by one of the male singers (Kai I believe) acting as Shaman. They then recite their collective prayer.
Remember, that we all are brothers
All people, beasts, trees and stone and wind
We all descend from the one great being
That was always there
Before people lived and named it
Before the first seed sprouted"
The rest of the ritual takes you on an amazing journey of healing and reconnection with something ancient and eternal.
Highly recommend the song Anoana for it's amazing story and Maria's fantastic vocals. I think you would especially enjoy where she uses the traditional Swedish Kulning technique in the song. Very powerful and soul stirring.
This is the only group that gives me chills with every song...even after hearing them hundreds of times❤❤❤
The official video for Anoana is a must watch. The production on the track is phenomenal and the video has become a firm favourite 😊
I saw them live about 1.5 years ago. Incredible experience.
Very guttural sound coupled with beautiful melody. Truly unique sound
The front woman Maria Franz has a solo project which is very different from this. She has a very pleasant singing voice in my opinion.
i would suggest 'in maidjan' from the same concert or 'anoana' live in london next. they also interpreted the oldest written song hurrian hymn to 'nikkal' from around 1300BC, but i couldn't find a live version yet.
Loved this reaction. Heilung is hypnotizing. 💜
Their uniqueness is such a great strength.
I enjoyed every moment watching you listen to this piece of art for the first time and see the same emotional rollercoaster this song did to me.
Bethany - someone has really thrown you off the deep end here!
It is definitely more to be experienced and felt, differing from contemporary music.
An easier way into the band would be Anoana, or Noropo. Both are extraordinary ❤
Finally getting to see Heilung live later this year. It's gonna be such a good weekend as we're seeing Epica the night before at the same venue.
This is so primal with a sad undertone. This is truly amazing. The primal nature of telling a story of a struggle is so compelling. This is my first time hearing them, and I am an instant fan. My heritage is viking, Norse, norwegian scandinavia, and this fascnates me and makes me feel connected to them. Thank you for doing this review!❤❤❤
Krigs galdr = War chant. I saw Heilung (healing in English) live in Toronto a year and a half ago and, what I heard about their "concert" proved to be true - it's more of a ceremony than a concert. It stirred my Nordic roots in a way that still hasn't left me.
Maria Franz is AWESOME
By the Way,Maria plays HUMAN BONES !
Their live performances are a lot of fun, very theatrical and generally speaking the fans who show up for them are a great community.
Thank you for doing Heilung justice in your analysis. If you watch or listen to some of their current stuff, you'll be even more impressed. If you ever get a chance to see them live, they are a must-see. Their "rituals" are absolutely the most entertaining, mesmerizing, captivating experiences and will move you mind, body, and soul!!
The languages used are english and runic ¿Old danis?
The texts of the song have been extracted from the Eggia stone. Eggja's stone (also known as Eggum's or Eggjum's stone) This is a large flat stone with runic inscriptions that covered a tomb dating from the period between 650 and 700 and that was discovered while plowing a field in 1917 at Eggja farm in Sogn og Fjordane, Norway. When it was found, the inscription was on the underside of the slab covering a man's grave, so that it could not be read from the outside (like the Kylver stone). The stone is currently in the Bergen museum. It has about 200 runes, making it the longest inscription engraved with letters of the ancient futhark alphabet, although some runes have a transitional form to the young futhark.
The lyrics say the following:
The home fades.
Vil launched a deadly horde upon them.
The oars and mast were destroyed.
Who brought?
Who brought the horde to this distant land?
The fishes of the streams of Firnoy.
They swim adrift.
From the land of bright meadows.
Who brought?
Who brought the horde to this distant land?
A hug.
Maria has such a beautiful voice... I love Heilung a lot. It was fun watching your eyes sink in all the imagery. Very nice job... very entertaining.
Heilung is a fascinating experience. I definitely recommend checking out the official video's for their songs Norupo and Anoana. The video's are amazing. Like traveling back in time. Their
music feels primal.
If you want to hear really cool throat singing look for “The Hu”. It’s a heavy metal band from Mongolia. They use traditional singing and Mongolian instruments with the classic rock and metal ones
Ya, The Hu are super duper kuul.
You gotta hear the studio version of this song as well. Their voices are so much clearer and it's so GOOD.
Saw them in Pittsburgh two years ago. Amazing. In Maidjan is my favorite tune, along with Anoana, the new live version.
This song always gives me goosebumps when I listen to the live version
This music is very primal, the deep drums, the bone clap (hitting bones together), the deep humming, these sounds go back millennia. So hypnotic and wonderful.
Listening to Heilung is an incredible experience. The ancient and primal sounds they make are mesmerising and evoke Vikings chanting. I feel like I have been meditating deeply or have gone into a trance watching/listening to them. I can't wait to see them live when they come to Australia!
There is no "Celtic" throat singing.
Kai occasionally uses a Mongolian type of throat singing (undertone singing) called "kargyraa".
The gutteral vocals in this song are more akin to metal vocals.
All false folds, no vocal folds.
Kai inspired me to learn Kargyraa myself and I'm familiar with metal vocalisations, so I notice the differences pretty clearly.
Another band that uses Kargyraa in a very beautiful and nordic inspired way is Nytt Land. I highly recommend.
I really enjoyed watching this. A year or so ago friends encouraged me to watch Heilung with an open mind and heart and I had a similar reaction. I just got to see them live at red rocks and it was an unforgettable experience. So sending your videos to friends because I still haven’t been able to explain what we saw in Colorado 😀
First time watching your channel and its Heilung :D Amazing :)
Christopher Juul and Maria Franz also sing in the Band Songleikr. The music is flat-out Nordic folk.
The look on her face at 11:14 is priceless. It matched mine as I was reaching to turn my volume down. I've listened to heilung for a few years, but he sounds more like he's whispering in the studio version.
This is so cool and haunting. I love it!! I also love watching your amazing face when you get lost in the beat. It's beautiful. Thank you and cheers from a finn in Sweden.
i know this for so long and saw 2 concerts. i still get goosepumps in so many parts at their songs !!
I imedly cry if listen & i am a experienced man 🙏
Saw them live last year on holiday (may have timed that purposely) when they were one of the headliners for Arc Tangent. Amazingly they are coming to my hemisphere later this year. I got the early bird tickets immediately. Due to demand they just announced a second concert. I immediately lengthened my work leave request and got the pre-release tickets again. Heilung are amazing. Also the amazing talent that is Eivor is opening for them who I am beyond excited to see live!!
I’ve been mesmerized with Maria’s voice for a long time.
I love their music.
Their music is very powerful, it stirs the blood, resonates in the heart. Look, I hate loud sounds, and I hate large crowds, but Heilung is one of an extremely limited number of performers who could get me to brave the storm, were I to ever get the opportunity.
I Love Heilung, especially this song, and I really Enjoyed watching you hear it for the first time!!!
I am going to a ritual in November, words can't say how excited I am to be involved in it, it takes you on a journey, it takes you to another plain of awareness
how wonderful to hear the comments from a pro coach with humility to learn.. i have only responded to this on an emotional level the comments illuminated thoughts and understanding I had not appreciated
Old school und einfach wunderschön "Heilung" ... Trance
These people are really good singers. Absolutely stellar live, just incredible.
Her voice SOARS. U should check out some of her new videos. They're truly amazing.
The lady and the throat singer with dreadlocks are a couple. The guy with the antlers (a tattoo artist) asked if he could record some of his poems in exchange of a free tattoo for the first guy. They ended up making this band. This was also their first live performance, so everyone else (including the falsetto guy) are guest artists. Some are now regulars, but some did not permanently join, such as the singer with the falsetto. Also, the tattoo was never executed because after this performance they were like “wow this worked?” and they now tour the world. They now have a few female back-up singers, one of which is the sister of the falsetto guy and has an amazing voice (just like basically everyone involved with them)
I think Norupo is also one of the greatest pieces of them.
Gotta do an Eivør reaction too. She opened for Heilung at Red Rocks recently and the second she started singing I started involuntarily crying.
All those different sounds in harmony is impressive
Glad this music is spreading.
You hit it right on the head, they make some beautiful music.
You are beautiful Bethany…! I love watching your reactions, real heartfelt passion. Thank you
Wardruna and Aurora - Helvegen (Live) I promise you will love it.
Ive seen them twice here in Berlin.😊 I’m not a spiritual/religious person, nor is the music historically accurate, but you could easily allow yourself to imagine being transported to ancient times and ancient gods. ❤
Great react. Warunda also sings in Old Norse
They have been a bucket list performer since I first saw the whole LIFA concert from which this is taken.
These guys are amazing 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻
Snap out of it is right. I have not seen these guys live but I know what this music does to me, I would be tripping. Love them.
Just came from their concert in Wooster(lol) yesterday. AMAZING!!
My first time ever hearing of this group or even this type of sound. I had chills. It felt so calming to me. It felt like "home" if I had to describe my experience. I will def be looking into more from them. Thank you for sharing this experience. Absolutely incredible. I think you said it best as "indescribable" and they have indeed mastered this art. I was also blown away at the costumes/garb (whatever you'd call it). Would love to see them in person and ive NEVER been to a live concert before in my life.
Love these artists!! Found them few years ago while finding Nightwish.
i wonder that you havn't yet stumbled onto eivor. she is honestly the best of the best!
Yes, Eivor Palsdottir, her song Trolabundin, 10/08/2013. And her song Falling Free (live at the Old Theater in Torshavn).
If you like this, I would highly suggest looking into Dead Can Dance (named after the instruments they play, instruments that are no longer used), and Cocteau Twins.
Definitely DCD, Heilung have acknowledged them as an influence.
I recently (in the last week) found this group and now there is nothing on this Earth I want to do more than see a ritual for myself live. And I'm a metal head, this isn't my forte at all but there is just something so special about Heilung that I honestly can't even describe - like they're a key to the lock that is my soul. Unfortunately they just have a few tour dates in the US this year and nothing remotely close to me.... so 2025 I really hope or hell maybe something will come up. I have to see them.
You need to watch the cartooned version of this song… heart rending

Beautiful sounds. Musically and vocally. I really love “Eniar Selvik”
These guys are soooooo very cool! Glad you got to this!!👏👏👏
This is an extension of her natural voice. When I met some of them, she spoke with this energy. Calming and grounded... I felt like Gimli talking to the Lady Galadriel.
I'm really enjoying watching a professional explain the bands i love. Maria has a beautiful voice.
