This song has very special meaning for us. My husband and I met when we were 11. When I was 19 and in the early stages of pregnancy with our first son, I was sat in the student union bar on campus, drinking a Henry (remember them?) waiting for my husband, then boyfriend, to get out of a lecture. Our parents didn’t support our situation and we were under immense pressure to focus on career and had reluctantly agreed to put the baby up for adoption. Neither of us was happy with this decision. We knew we were each other’s forever and we’d end up having children together eventually although we didn’t intend to start our family as teenagers. While I waited, this song came on. Even though I knew the song well, it was like it was brand new and I was hearing it for the first time. As I sat there contemplating my situation, the baby, who I had not yet felt move must have been listening too. Just at the part where he sings ‘hey you with the pretty face, welcome to the human race’ he kicked for the very first time. Almost as if to say ‘I’m here, I’m coming’. I patted my small bump and said ‘Welcome to the human race baby.’ In that moment I knew. The moment my husband finished his lecture and met me in the S.U Bar, he did too. I described what happened. I told him there was no way I could let other people raise our baby. I would do it by myself if I had to. I wouldn’t ask him for anything. He took my hands and let go of the breath he’d been holding for the past several weeks. “Oh thank god.” He said. “I didn’t know how to say it because it’s your body, your choice, but I’ve been feeling the same way.”
Almost 7 years later, after my husband and I married, we walked down the aisle to this song. Along with us, our 6 year old and his 3 year old brother.

All sorts of things can do that - of course they can, we're all different and we all have different buttons that can be pushed by different things in different circumstances - but, even so, that's such a gorgeous story! Not the fact that you needed it, obviously. But the idea that a bright, happy song (about feeling bright and happy) can do exactly what we all hope it could do...well, that's just so perfect. Good things do good. It's great to hear that something as simple as that is actually true.
And it makes listening to it even more perfect. We know it sounds uplifting, but knowing it literally has the power to save people...well, how perfect is that?!
Hope you ARE glad you stayed.

For my money, ELO is the most underrated and underappreciated band of the rock era. The masterful symphonic arrangements that Lynne and company created are completely unparalleled in rock music. My favorite is Shine A Little Love, but others like Turn To Stone, Don't Bring Me Down, All Over the World, Twilight, I'm Alive, Telephone Line, Last Train to London, Fire on High, Evil Woman, Livin' Thing, Sweet Talkin' Woman, and Showdown are all masterpieces. Damn, and I almost forgot about their work on the Xanadu soundtrack!

I got into ELO only a few years ago after seeing the name in the credits after hearing a great soundtrack. No other band has made me say "They made that one too?!" more times.
My phantasy theory was that ELO was created when all the best bands of the 60s and 70s had a lovechild together that wrote and performed all the songs The Beatles didn't have time to make. :D But honestly, they were more diverse than that.

Huge in the 1970s and beyond in album and single sales but I suspect a lot of people today are not as familiar as they could/ should be with their great body of work. ELO is my favorite band of all time (Depeche Mode 2nd, Toto 3rd, Tears for Fears 4th). It just so happens that I was dealing with my own version of depression as a teen back in the late 70's due to a very dysfunctional family life. I bought the "Out of the Blue" LP and it was when I listened to Mr. Blue Sky that I realized that there was hope for a better future (than the one I was dealing with at that time). I have always credited Jeff Lynne for saving my life and giving me that hope back then. To this day, I will dance to that song no matter where I am and my mood is always gets better after I listen to it. Another song from ELO that does that for me is "All Over The World".

First time I've seen this band recognized on social media EVER! THANK YOU ❤ I'm 57, and am a fan since the 5th grade. I also play different instruments from a young age and was exposed to MANY different genres of music (Thank you God 🙏) and this band mesmerized me from that young age. I know every song by heart 💜 They are the Greatest unsung heroes of Rock and Roll. In the same class as The Beatles, Queen, The Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin. Only I didn't "meet The Beatles until 7th grade and the others I grew to love in highschool. So I realize now that they were truly number 1 for me. Jeff Lynn was genius ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

I would LOVE to see more ELO content! I found them in the mid-90s, when in college I went on a huge 70's music educational odyssey, with my friends asking me who the heck that band was. My kids seemed to ignore me when I played ELO, until Guardians of the Galaxy 2, which made Mr. Blue Sky one of their favorites. Now it's their biggest request on every drive, and they know all the words.

Strange thing is those memories are from the summers of 1975,1976 and 1977. I was staggered to recently discover it was not released until 1978. I guess it just such a happy song my young mind linked it so closely to happy times that the song became part of them. Went to Edinburgh in 2018 to the tattoo with my wife and her sister, closing track was Mr Blue Sky it was an awesome surprise.
Week later in Toronto went to see Jeff Lynne Elo with my wife and her brother had been a fan since I bought my first single Shine a Little Love in 70s ...was an amazing show my brother in law and I sang along to every song word for word best night ever!

I feel like over the years, ELO has become underrated. I remember my little sister laughing at Telephone Line and me saying something like, "Listen, kid, this song is a masterpiece." The younger generations just don't appreciate their brilliance.

I think it’s more that they don’t understand Jeff Lynne’s genius, or the music of the 70’s in general, which keeps them from really HEARING it. I made sure my kids all heard and understood the music of my generation, that’s why they have such an eclectic taste in music. They approach music the same way I always have, I don’t care what genre or what era it was created in if I like it I like it.

I guess we're dating ourselves, but as DJ, I can say affirmatively that this generation is completely tone deaf. As Donald Fagan would probably say, "What passes for music I can't understand"!

@ChuckWortman I've been trying to come to terms with age lately, but I have to say I would rather be the age I am now than my kids' ages. Then again, our parents probably thought _we_ were tone deaf, too.

I remember being so happy as a kid to tape ELO’s “Calling America" on American Top 40 in 1986. Nobody would play it on local radio. 📞🇺🇲🎶
