  • Over the 12 Series of the Doctor Who revival, there have been a vast number of appearances by celebrities. Some have been good, others have been less good. In this video, I talk about some of the ones that stand out to me, trying to work out what makes a good guest star, and what should be avoided.

      Not even as a guest, she became on of my favorite characters in Doctor Who period! So much so that I kinda wanted her to become a recurring character. Maybe not as a companion, since that might be a disservice to her character, but as a recurring side character with her own plot going on that just happens to collide with the Doctor's. Arguably, she's the reason why I even got into Doctor Who, since Blink was the first episode I ever watched. Yes, the Angels themselves were the highlight, but Sally Sparrow was a fantastic character that made that episode great as well.

But after that the actress had a great career after that episode.

    I think Classic Who pulled off special guest appearances better. They were featured a lot more sparingly, so when more famous actors appeared they were usually given bigger parts (eg. Michael Gough in 'The Celestial Toymaker' and Julian Glover in 'City Of Death'), as opposed to Nu Who's tendency to give less important roles to celebrities just for the sake of it.

    Not sure if it counts as a cameo, but Derek Jacobi as Professor Yana was just superb. To be expected from an actor of his talent, but bot always something you get in Who.
    The reveal of Timothy Dalton as Rassilon after having narrated all through the episode was spine-tingling, and watching him crank it up to eleven for his performance was a lot of fun.
    My favourite has to be Frank Skinner, though. Unusually for a comedian, he plays a very straight role: someone calm, competent, and not expressly comic-relief. He's not noted as a talented actor outside this, but his usual charming blokeishness just dropped in so perfectly.

    When the Trailer is better than the show itself, THAT is when you know the show has gone downhill, through the Earth's crust, through the Mantle, Core and so far into Hell it is that bad.
    They have ruined the show and watching the Trailers is WAY MORE than enough to know it is STILL going to be bad.

  • @bheast86
    @bheast86 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Putting in comedians generally isn't a good idea: Normal actors play comedy, and don't necessarily expect kudos just for turning up. Sometimes it's better if there's less because more is more to screw up. Can you really rather Bill Bailey or Lee Mack as actors (even when Mack's writing his own script).
    You didn't mention Paul Kaye, who seemed to think he was being special for wearing silly make-up and costume.
    Nick Frost was awful; He was supposed to be the very meme of Father Christmas but came over as the guy who was doing the job at the department store after the proper one got sick.
    Matt Lucas (or 'and Matt Lucas') was an unremarkable guest performer (having alopecia doesn't equal charisma) and the worst ever regular, dragging up laboured 'witticisms' when that was what Peter Capaldi was doing already

  • @jeff3482
    @jeff3482 ปีที่แล้ว

    Not exactly sure what you're expecting from guest parts but I thought Simon Pegg as the editor was superb and lee Mack was given more than enough screentime to do his wise cracking schtick before being killed off. They don't all have to have a massive role to make an impact, this tradition of having comedians in doctor who goes back to the old show, you best not watch the ken dodd or hale and pace episodes then you'd prob be aghast.

    I will never understand people who see Cary Mulligan as a good actress. I genuinely think she's awful, unable to convey any kind of inner life. I recall thinking that all her work was uniformly terrible when I remembered she was in Blink which I recalled thinking that she did a decent job.
    However, when I re-watched I realised I'd been too distracted by the great story to have noticed how bland and unengaging she was.
    Re-watch the scene where her friend is taken by the Weeping Angels and she's confronted by that friend's great grandson. Up until that moment, she didn't know her friend was gone, as the scene progresses, she's discovering something that will redefine her understanding of reality, along with being told that her friend has died and she will never see her again.
    Mulligan conveys this with an expression that can only be categorised as, "mild disappointment". She gives the moment the same emotional energy as someone who's gone to a dinner party only to find out that the hosts are vegan. I've seen porn stars with better range than her. *Bad* porn stars.

    Arguing that Bill Nye's role isn't important is frankly ludicrous. While Vincent and the Doctor isn't a bad episode by any stretch, it's so thoroughly elevated and surpassed by its ending sequence that it's impossible to argue that less pivotal roles with more screentime are overall more important.
