Yep, -47 windchill recorded locally where I live. Furnace didn’t get much of a rest. I’ll be glad to see the ass end of this one!

Excellent vid, perfect lighting. I had a Utica boiler it lasted 32 years, the previous homeowner had leaking pipes/high vent over it for years rotting out the top cover, it eventually leaked from the burner area. I had it replaced with a Crown. I downsized the boiler it was too big for my house, have been saving at least 33% a month on my gas bills which is great it helps offset the high cost of a boiler replacement. Many boilers out there are oversized.
Yeah well Crown is not the quality of Utica or Weil McLain, but good luck buddy.

Yeah, it's interesting to watch him fix these. I don't know why? We always had regular gas furnaces in every house we lived in and I don't remember any of those furnaces breaking down one time. We did have one water heater fail due to old age.

At least that was a nice open well lit space to work. Wonder how long that system was low on water. Couldn't have been working too well at all.
I have almost the same Utica boiler. The thermocouple goes bad very often. I use sandpaper to clean it up and it lasts longer.
Use a "Husky" tcouple

I think I'd have put my own temporary pressure gauge on it. Old tridicators often can't be trusted. I carry a couple pressure gauges on female hose thread adapters for quickly checking house and boiler pressures.
It was -30 when i got up today. Best to have the furnace or boiler working.
Same here, and-50 windchill. Thankfully my 17 year old furnace is working like new.

The ole Utica, one of the best boilers from back in the day, every time someone aske me if they should upgrade this boiler I tell them hell no keep it till it blows.
Is there a way to test the TC before you replace?
I used to laugh so much at people who had oil furnaces and oil boilers who used to say the only thing wrong with it was that the pilot light needed to be lit. A oil furnace with a carburator was a rare beast but I still delivered to one that was still going.
The house I grew up in had one of those pot type oil furnaces. Think it was a Siegler.... Not very efficient, but they did the job.
@@notajp that is actually called a oil circulator. I actually heated my house with 2 of them; and yes that brand was the most popular. However there were some oil furnaces that had a carburator which was very rare.

Steven, your experience, would you recommend a cast iron boiler or a condensing boiler, for replacement of a cast iron boiler. Thinking there could be more things could go wrong on a condensing boiler. Thanks
Cast for longevity, condensing for efficiency. But yes without annual maintenance you will have failures as there are many more parts and controls to fail

Hey Steve. Do you leave the high vents open all the time to blead any air or should they be closed. I keep mine closed but I had a plumber tell me they should always be open..
If your around your boiler a lot .... I use a No. 67 like em better than the B&G's or the taco's .... instructed to leave the cap open .. but I leave mine closed and like I said if you around the boiler here and there Ill open mine let air out then close it ... sometimes she'll go to release air and won't reseat ... leak all over the place ... just my opinion ... When you start to see little electrical controls made in China, that to me is a big issue. If a 25 cent electrical part can break down your $1000 furnace, that is totally unacceptable. Not every repairer will be as good as Steve and some would just say "replace your furnace."
When does a circulator pump come on when the boiler is fired? Is it after the boiler heats up or when a zone valve gets a call for heat? I'm just learning boilers after 15 yrs hvac svc from the south though

do you trust pressure temp gadge on boilers? I use my own gadge on the drain and clamp probe on the feed...80% are broke
I replaced one a few days ago that read 180 degrees long after I tossed in the garbage lol

Hey man great work. Just wondering again, are you getting any snow right now or expecting any soon? I’m getting a bunch right now but it’s only going to be 3 inches. If you don’t have any maybe you will in Feb/March. Last year in March I got a foot of snow so let’s hope
no snow yet

On installs, it's kinda difficult even BRAND NEW to get that damper plug in. Pain in the ass... When I run across those dampers and they burn out? I hot-wire them to eliminate the damper altogether. I give the customer the choice, of course.

I saw it wrong, I thought the water feed was from the left. How could I have ever doubted Steve! Sorry!
that thing is a major safety hazard plug in back flow preventer no relief tube going to floor and worst there that the thing is pointing right at someone walking by, if it every blew off someone would be burnt bad !!!!

That pilot flame on the right burner looks slightly blocked, which would make incomplete combustion which would make water vapor and eat that thermocouple away.

probably a bunch of sludge built up in that feedwater pipe. I hope is doesn't come loose and plug your new valve. its good to purge 1st

That boiler wasn't working long before the pilot went out. Makes you wonder what people put up with before they call a plumber.

Hi i recently did service to my water floor heating radiant I changed the expansion tank the pressure vale changed the Honeywell zones the zones are calling and the pressure gauge stays just 2 line above the 20 and staying there and i did flashed the water from all zone lots of dark water came out and i left it to open tell water color got back to normal but the issue i have is the first floor which got 2 zone both zone got warmed but the upstairs only get to 10 degree does not matter if i leave the tramontane all the way to the end or levee it on 20 so what cold be wrong what do u suggest please Thanks
