Dusty Springfield had an amazing voice. She rose to fame in the 60s with hits like "I Only Want to Be With You", "You Don't Have to Say You Love Me", "Son of a Preacher Man" and "Wishin' and Hopin'". She wasn't as successful in the 1970s. In 1987 she shot back up the charts with her collaboration with Pet Shop Boys "What Have I Done to Deserve This" which revitalized her career. It's a song you should check out. Unfortunately she left us in 1999 at the age of just 59. RIP Dusty.

In March 1999, Dusty was scheduled to go to Buckingham Palace to receive an OBE (Order of the British Empire) for "services to popular music". Due to the recurrence of her breast cancer, officials of Queen Elizabeth II gave permission for the medal to be collected earlier, in January, and it was presented to Springfield in hospital with a small group of friends and relatives attending. She died on the day that she would otherwise have collected her award from the Palace.

Dusty is one of my favourite of the British lady singers, of the 1960's/1970's which includes Petula Clarke, Lulu. Sandy Shaw, Julie Rogers and Cilla Black. Bring back such special memories of my early primary school to early high school years. This is coming from a Caribbean fan😊

Dusty still is my all time favourite female singer from the sixties. However please check out Shirley Bassey singing The Living Tree live at Royal Variety. It's on you tube and it really is a performance no one should miss. Even more amazing is that she was well into her sixties when she performed it.

Aretha Franklin, shortly after hearing Dusty's version of "Son of a Preacher Man," ran into her at the Atlantic Records offices. It's reported Aretha put her hand on Dusty's shoulder and just said "GIRL!" That should tell you what the Queen of Soul thought of Dusty.

Dusty Springfield would pluck words out the air as she sung, watch a video of her performance. She was a stunning vocalist, but took it a step further in her delivery.

I highly recommend "What do you get when you fall in love?" by Bobbie Gentry, who sang the bridge song you're thinking of. The other Dusty you did was "I only wanna be with you." "Green, Green" by the New Christy Minstrels, with Dusty, is rather famous, especially in Japan somehow, and a favourite of mine, too.
    Please do both of these.

    "In Private",
"What Have I Done To Deserve This" (this is with 'The Pet Shop Boys'),
"Nothing Has Been Proved" (this is with 'The Pet Shop Boys').
There are plenty of other tracks but these are good ones to continue with.

Jan., 1969, I met a young woman while I was on R&R in Sydney, Australia. We hit it off. Before I returned to the states, I managed to get a 1 week leave (Mar., 1969) to return to Sydney & stay with her family. While in Sydney, Dusty Springfield was performing at a cabaret & we went to see her. It was a very special night during my Viet. experience.

You just need to hear Dusty in the 80s when she was featured by Pet Shop Boys in What Have I Done to Deserve this? Neil Tennant, who was the lead singer for PSB had loved Dusty as a teen, and always wanted to record with her. By the 80s, she was totally down and out, no career, I think drug problems, and by putting her in a PSB song revived her career. Then the week when she was to be inducted in the Rock-n-Roll Hall of Fame in the late 90s, she died a few days prior to induction.

Elvis Presley did a great cover of this song on the "That's the Way It Is" album, live in Las Vegas, originally released 1970. Great Review. As far as women from the 60s, you guys haven't even scratched the surface yet, not even a little bit! Just one example would be: Barbara Lewis - Baby I'm Yours - 1965.

I have a feeling Ivor Raymonde (with the Philip's in house orchestra) might just have beaten him to it. Not sure what the original of this one sounded like , I think it was a French singer and english words were adapted to the tune. (oh apparently Italian - there are some good Naples songs in the San Remo song contests early 1960s and similar ).

I suggest a 70s singer I’m not sure you’ve ever done and she had a lot of hits over a lot of years. Her name is Melissa Manchester and an early song of hers is “If it Feels Good Let it Ride” but her biggest hit would be either “Don’t Cry Out Loud” as an introspective or her most upbeat song “You Should Hear How She Talks About You.”

Don't forget "Midnight Blue" was a huge hit for her. Great story- Too many years ago, I was with a small group of friends that had tickets for her concert at Carnegie Hall on West 57th Street. We were on the lower east side of Manhattan and we were on the verge of missing the concert because we could not get a cab to stop for the 5 of us. Then something truly astounding happened. A city bus driver saw our frustration and asked where we were trying to go. She said she just went off duty and would take us there, which she did. A lot of people arrived in limos. We arrived on time in a $300,000+ ride. I will never forget her act of kindness. Fantastic concert, btw. Melissa was a "Harlette", a backup singer on Bette Midler's "Divine Miss M" album. Bette, Melissa, Carole Bayer Sager (Mrs. Burt Bacharach) and Barry Manilow all helped support and boost each other's early careers.

Dusty is one of my all time favorite singers and this is my favorite of hers. The power and emotion in the vocals is superior. I've seen other talented singers sing it but they just didn't have the emotion in their voice to pull it off like Dusty. I won't limit Dusty to a list of best female singers from the 60s. To me she is one of the greatest singers of all time, period. As far songs from her you haven't checked out yet: "Give Me Time", "Little By Little" "Stay Awhile", "The Look of Love", "Wishin' and Hopin'", "Breakfast in Bed", "Have a Good Life Baby", "The Windmills of Your Mind", "I Can't Make it Alone", and "Just a Little Lovin'".

Flashback to being a kid here with my palm sized a.m. transistor radio, which most of us kids carried around. All those 60s tunes pouring out non-stop from that tiny speaker. Sooo good.
Another super soulful blonde haired lady you should give a shot too is Bonnie Bramlett from the duo Delaney & Bonnie. She and Leon Russell Road an amazing song that the Carpenters had a hit with. It's called Groupie (Superstar) but the Carpenters called it simply Superstar. Delaney is one soulful lady.
