Mary Isobel Catherine Bernadette O'Brien, aka 'Dusty Springfield' was born in London (England), may she R.I.P. She had a boat-load of hits in the sixties - SON OF A PREACHER MAN (1968) is my favorite. She made a comeback in the eighties with Pet Shop Boys singing WHAT HAVE I DONE TO DESERVE THIS?(1987). You will LOVE both of those songs.
Dusty Springfield has an extensive catalogue, some of her tracks which I recommend are: "Son of a Preacher Man", "I Close My Eyes and Count to Ten", "Wishin' and Hopin'", "Spooky", "I Only Want to Be With You", "If You Go Away", "The Look of Love", "You Don't Own Me", "I Just Don't Know What to Do With Myself", "Little By Little", "Am I the Same Girl", "Just a Little Lovin'", "Goin' Back", "In the Middle of Nowhere", "Nothing Has Been Proved" with 'The Pet Shop Boys', "What Have I Done to Deserve This?" with 'The Pet Shop Boys'. There are many more but these are great ones to continue with.
My favorite song by her! She had a lot of hits in the sixties and seventies! Fabulous voice and as a fourteen year old guy, I was immediately in love with her when this was released in '64!
Just a bit of trivia! Dusty lived on my Police Beat many years ago, and she lived only a few doors away from another 60's female pop singer, Sandie Shaw. There is a Memorial stone dedicated to Dusty at St Mary's Churchyard, Henley-on-Thames - Oxfordshire, a town local to me. Her ashes were scattered in Henley and in Ireland at the Cliffs of Moher.
She was the best British female solo artist from the 60’s to the 80’s. So many great songs. Try her Duet with the Pet Shop Boys called What Have I Done to Deserve This.
My very favorite song by Dusty. She was born in London and ''Dusty Springfield'' was a stage name. Her real name was Mary Isobel Catherine Bernadette O'Brien. One of the greatest voices EVER. Thanxx for the reaction to this tune.
Dusty was a great r n b soul singer as well as the dramatic ballads. She recorded a great album in Memphis. The biggest hit from that was Son of a Preacher Man which you must hear. She is sadly missed and died far to young
Dusty performed with her brother Tom as the Springfields. I just learned this yesterday and that after they went their own ways he wrote "I'll Never Find Another You" for The Seekers, which reached No. 1 in the United Kingdom in 1965. It received a 1967 US revival as a country music No.1 by Sonny James.
Dusty was an Irish girl who grew up in England. When her first single hit the charts in 1963 she made the world sit up and listen. She also proved once and for all that white girls got soul. RIP Ms. Dusty.
Please more Dusty Springfield with her best hits including "Wishin' and Hopin'", "The Look of Love" and "The Windmills of Your Mind". Thank You so much.
Dusty Springfield [Mary Isobel Catherine Bernadette O'Brien] was a prolific English performer in the mid to late 1960 and during the 1960s she ranked among the most successful British female performers on both sides of the Atlantic. However from this peak she faded largely into obscurity although she was still an icon of the ‘swinging sixties’ in the U.K. In the late 1080s she made a mini renaissance with the Pet Shop Boy “What Have I Done To Deserve This”.
An incredible break-up song of unnrequited love. Dusty Springfield - the No 1 best female British singer of the 1960s without a doubt. She was way ahead of her time.
'Dusty' was a nickname she acquired in her childhood when she would play with her brother and his friends. They apparently called her Dusty because she would get happily get 'dusty' playing their games! This was her only UK no.1 hit, the words written in a hurry because they had to record it in short time. 'Son of a Preacher Man' is perhaps her other best known recording, that I would recommend. Her real name was Mary Isobel Catherine Bernadette O'Brian!
Congratulations! You just experienced one of the UK's foremost female vocalists. She was very influenced by US soul and became friends with Aretha Franklin and Martha Reeve. She was instrumental in bringing many soul acts from Atlantic/Stax/Motown to the UK. Worth checking out 'In The Middle of Nowhere', 'If You Go Away', and 'The Look of Love' from the 60s. And she reappeared in the late 80s singing with the Pet Shop Boys - try 'In Private'.
Dusty was one of the best female voices of all time.Incredible that you have not heard of her? This is an Italian song by Pino Dinaggio...He sang it in the San remo festival of 1965 dusty was in the audience and the rest is history. P.S. watch her live version of it!
So many memorable hits of the sixties female singers are based on undeservedly lesser known Italian songs Cilla Black with Your My World was another I learnt about recently. Even Frank Sinatra and My Way was a translation re interpretation.
@@SpaceCattttt Doesn't really matter since fans are never even going to really meet these people anyway. I suppose some groupie girls get that experience for a night, but everyone else is out of luck.
You have just heard one of the most influential singers of the last 50 years.Dusty started as a folk singer then transitioned into a single pop singer around 1963( I OnlyWant To Be With You was a Top 10 hit) She became a fixture on variety shows in England and America in the 1960’s and was being thought of as a singer that the parents liked. That changed when Dusty recorded Dusty in Memphis. She merged her stylish voice with Memphis Blues and the Delta soul sounds. This combo was a revelation and this with her look made her a symbol. Female singers that were popular were either counter culture hippie chicks( Janis Joplin) or fashion models( Diana Ross) Dusty was an approachable stylish modern woman. She had the look of a young baby boomer confident woman. Her look and sound paved the way for the modern female pop singer. After you become familiar with Dusty you will hear her voice in many and this includes recent singers like Amy Winehouse. Dusty in Memphis is almost always included in every Top 100 lists. The word you used”!polished” was on the mark,. Thank you for another entertaining reaction. Great and entertaining channel
Sadly, Dusty passed away from cancer a mere two weeks before she was to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. RIP Dusty Springfield (1939 - 1999). Your music shall endure forever.
She was a little before my time, but I knew her as a voice of voices, truly a great one! 'You Don't Own Me' and 'If You Go Away', also 'Son Of A Preacher Man', and 'I Only Want To Be With You', are some more biggies by her. You are right, she is one of the best female voices I can remember. Thanks for the reaction.
Another great English female singer from the sixties is Petula Clark. Her songs may sound familiar to you as she had nine US top twenty hits mid sixties. “Downtown” “Don’t sleep in the subway” are good starting point.
Dusty was amazing and one of a great crop of female artists from the UK in the early to mid sixties Sandie Shaw, Cilla Black, Petula Clark and Shirley Bassey. The other great voice is Judith Durham of the group The Seekers, though Australian they came to the UK and had a string of UK chart hits. Great songs to check out Cilla's 'Your My World' (number one the day i was born) and Shirleys This Is My Life, Petula 'Downtown', Sandie 'Long Live Love and The Seekers 'The Carnival Is Over'
Dusty was a pioneer in many ways , true blue eyed soul. She brought many Motown artists to the UK in the 60s citing them as her influences . At the heart of Apartheid in South Africa she was due to appear in concert, the caveat in her agreement was she insisted on playing to a multi racial audience, when she arrived she discovered that the powers that be would only permit a white only audience , she refused to perform and returned to the UK. She has an awesome back catalogue, my personal favourite is The Look of Love , sexy sensual and so soulful.
She was so good Berry Gordon called her over the Motown studios and recorded her doing a complete Motown album. Dusty was a unique blue eyed soul singer. Very classy
Dusty Springfield never worked with Berry Gordy, never recorded for Motown, and never made a 'complete Motown album'. In 1965, she hosted a 'Ready, Steady, Go' special, 'The Sound of Motown'; and a few years later made 'Dusty in Memphis' for the American label, Atlantic (in the UK she was still signed to Philips), produced by Jerry Wexler, Tom Dowd, and Arif Mardin, which was released in 1969. Perhaps you're getting these mixed up?
The "British Invasion" of the 60's is usually remembered for the bands of the time, like the Beatles and Stones. But included in this invasion was some wonderful female singers, led by the great Dusty Springfield. Anything you listen to of hers will be great, also listen to Petula Clark, Sandie Shaw, Marianne Faithful, Lulu and Others from the same time period.
I was introduced to music at a very young age, but it still surprises me when I remember lyrics to a song like this that came out when I was 6. Some other songs by Dusty Springfield are "Son of a Preacher Man", "Wishin' and Hopin'", "The Look of Love", and "The Windmills of Your Mind".
Dusty Springfield was born in Ireland, raised in Britain, and in her heart a blue-eyed soul singer. She also was known for Franch chanson songs like this that were popular in the 60s. Her classis album was called Dusty in Memphis. Several great hits including "The Look of Love", "Son of a Preacher Man", "Wishin' and Hopin'", "I Only Wanna Be With You". She also did a very 80s song with the Pet Shop Boys, "What Have I Done to Deserve This".
The Look Of Love is great track from Londoner Dusty born in West Hampstead. It was recorded in London at the old Phillip’s studio. She was nicknamed dusty when a kid because she played football in the street and came home dirty.
Great great singer, numerous classic dramatic hits and one classic album 'Dusty in Memphis'. Apparently she suffered from nerves badly and went to record it at Muscle Shoals but was so intimdated by them they had to record the backing tracks and Dusty went to NYC to sing over them. She had a very difficult time with her sexuality and her private life but made a comeback with the Pet Shop Boys in the 80's and sadly passed in 1999, something of an enigma really she was shy and retiring but hugely respected by everyone.
Dusty is a legend with quite a few hits back in the sixties. When I think of Dusty I would say a fellow Canuck you might have heard of sounds a bit like her in Shania Twain!
There is no category you can put Dusty into. She is her own category. First time I heard "I Only Want To Be With You" she owned me. 🥰I have a lot of her stuff. She sings in French too.
Dusty(Mary O'Brien) was one of the greatest singers ever inducted into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame. Many very good songs. I only Wanna be with you, Son of a Preacher Man, A Brand New Me, Wishing and Hoping, and more. Noted as with Linda Ronstat to do covers as good or better than the original. One Example Anyone who Had a Heart by Dionne Warwick.
The song I love best if hers is You Don’t Have To Say You Love Me. Another good one is I Only Want To Be With You. I think you would like the first one best. It’s more emotional and shows her voice best. I love your reactions
This incredibly talented woman was considered to be the first white female soul singer. The artists that she enjoyed listening to were many of the black artists of the 60s. Dusty had SOUL. One of her last before she departed was a song called "What have I done to deserve this" with the Pet Shop boys. A wonderful dance song. Really one of the best. Sam, your instant reaction was right on the money. "Soulful sound". Very nice....You guys are the best. Keep up the good reactions.
VERY sad that folks these days do not know the classic pop songs. Just that there was a hip hop sample... a stolen section. DELIGHTED that you now recognize the greatness of Dusty. She was rated on a Billboard poll as the second greatest female vocalist of all time, after Aretha Franklin. 100% of her huge catalogue of performances are worth hearing. Thanks for bringing her to a new audience. Don't let her fade away. 😍
Dusty has a huge catalogue of hits, but go back to her beginnings and check out some of her performances with The Springfields: @Bambino', 'Silver Threads & Golden Needles', 'Island of Dreams' and 'Say I won't be There'.
She was noted to do covers as good or better than the original as Linda Ronstat. Anyone who had a Heart is superb originally by D. Warwick, Am I the Same Girl by Barb Acklin.
Dusty is a 'Stage Name' her real name was Mary Isobel Catherine Bernadette O'Brien. She has one sexy sounding voice! Check out "Wishin' and Hopin'", "Son of a Preacher Man" and "The Look of Love". "The Look of Love" was composed by Burt Bacharach and Hal David. It was featured in an extended slow-motion interlude to the 1967 spoof James Bond film Casino Royale. In 2008, the song was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. It also received a Best Song nomination at the 1968 Academy Awards and is said to have partially inspired the film Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery. Source: Wikipedia
She was Mary O'Brien and sang in a trio The Lana Sisters in 1960 but left them to joined her brother Dion O'Brien and Tim Feild, who had been working as a duo and they became the folk band The Springfields, she later went solo as Dusty Springfield and never looked back, probably one of the best UK female singer ever, there are lots of UK female stars from the 60's that are awesome, check out Helen Shapiro, she was 15 and still at school when she released her debut single ''Don't Treat Me Like A Child''another enjoyable video guys
Dusty Springfield was big a few years in the sixties... As I remember, she probably had about half a dozen or so hits that did well... She didn't have a crazy wild voice like some people did in the 60s that were trying to be relevant during that time but she did have a nice middle of the road kind of voice which was very easy to listen to...Elvis Presley did a cover of this song in the early seventies in his live concerts and did well with it...Dusty was probably best known for her hit some " Son of a Preacher Man "... I'm sure you've seen that mentioned in a lot of your comments and it is well worth a lesson... Another great reaction guys... See you on the next one... Keep Being Awesome !!!...
Dusty first heard this sung by Pino Donnagio, who was also the composer, at the San Remo Song Festival in 1965. She brought it back to the UK and commissioned her friend Vicky Wickham to write the English lyrics. She recorded it in 1966. The original title is "Io che non vivo senza te"
Love how you guys have discovered one of the best 60's Female artists. As you say her polished performances were very much a trademark. Try watching something live if you get the chance please. She had Presence.
It is the cover of a 1965 Italian song by Pino Donaggio and Vito Pallavicini, titled "Io che non vivo (senza te)". "Io che non vivo (senza te)" ("I, who can't live (without you)") was introduced at the 15th edition of the Sanremo Festival by Pino Donaggio - who had co-written the song with Vito Pallavicini - and his team partner Jody Miller. The song reached the final at Sanremo and, as recorded by Donaggio, reached No. 1 in Italy in March 1965.
Dusty Springfield - Son of a Preacher Man. You will love it.
What they said!!!

Dusty Springfield - The Look of Love. Just beautiful.
A Brand New Me by her is forgotten 😑, no reason.
Yes! The Look of Love ♥️
Yes, this is an absolute must.
Great song. Sergio Mendes and Brasil 66 also do a great performance of this song.
Yep.
"Wishin' & Hopin'" & "I Only Want To Be With You" are musts.
My two favorites from her 😍 I must have worn out the 45 on "I Only Want To Be With You".
By the way, Wishin' and Hopin' is composed by Hal David and Burt Bacharach, who are worth looking into in their own rights.
"Son of a Preacher Man" "The Look of Love" "I Only Want To Be With You" "Wishin and Hopin"
Any of those plus Windmills Of Your Mind
Once again, the often overlooked " 'Some of Your Lovin' " has been overlooked.
All great suggestions
Don't forget Silver Threads and Golden Needles with The Springfields.

It was Italian. Dusty heard it, loved it, and bought it. She wrote the English lyrics herself.
No she didn't. Dusty's friend Vicki Wickham, the producer of Ready Steady Go!, wrote the required English lyric with her own friend Simon Napier-Bell.

Not aware of that , I'll check it out. Too bad her and Karen didn't do duets.
As a child of the 60s, my absolute favorite Dusty songs are "Brand New Me", "The Look of Love", "Wishin and Hopin".
Spooky is another great song, very mellow.
Great comments so far! Son of a Precher Man, The Look of Love...
I love Dusty's cover of "Spooky".
Source: Wikipedia
and "In the Middle of Nowhere" ...
She had more than half a dozen!
Haunting is Right word🎉😢🎉 She has fans in Hong Kong❤ RIP
So many great songs. Goin’ Back my fave.
She had a lot of great songs.
