  • In "Handyman", Taryl's 2nd Halloween video of October 2018, Taryl goes over how to properly replace the transmission on your 30" Toro Time Master Mower. Prior to and after the fix, Junior catches wind about the legend of Handyman, where a mechanic shows up and fixes your problem after saying his name 3 times while patting your head, but only there's a catch. Check it out here for another hilarious yet informative how-to video from your pals at Grass Rats Garage. And as always, There's Your Dinner!!

    Good video, very clear steps.
My Toro Timemaster failed with no drive to the right hand wheel. I removed the transmission as per your procedure.
I stripped the transmission down and found the problem not to be gears or halfshaft problems, but a split in half halfshaft retaining bush that doubles as an oil circulation paddle (the transmission housing is half full of 20-50 or 15-40 oil).
This 2 bit thing was made of plastic and clearly the weak link. No parts are available for the transmission internals, in the UK anyway!
It allowed the halfshaft / inner drive transfer wheel to float away enough not to get any drive from the crown wheel when the cable pulled the actuator lever.
I've made a brass bush (have lathe will turn) and machined out the paddle so it fits over the brass bush. A stainless steel bolt through the paddle halves and bush / halfshaft keeps it all in place. Now all is in place it works just as it should. The other halfshaft has a similar bush / oil paddle but is in great condition!
Perhaps I had a faulty moulded plastic bush?
There is nothing on the internet about stripping / repairing these transmissions. You are expected to pay the $150 + tax or £181 for a whole new transmission!
I'm making a little video about the steps and what I did to repair it. Will post up soon.
    Regards,
    Steve

You saved the day!!! Great video & comedy, and the process and order that you did the replacement was spot on...I called my local Toro Repair shop and was told it would be 3-4 weeks to get it done...I ordered the trans from Amazon for $180 and took on the challenge...Yes, my spring fell out and the "pin" was lost on top and I had to remove a few bolts and the top to get it re-situated (you warned, but I didn't pay attention!!). With a little help from my wife to hold some stuff, I replaced it myself & saved a few bucks...Thanks for the education, information & entertainment!!😊

Done and done! Working like new again. My old transmission did not have the two bolts on top of the pulley which keep the roll pin in! The roll pin was backed all the way out of the shaft. Even so, the transmission was slipping and the differential locked the shafts up when pushed in so you couldn't turn left or right. It has been working for more than ten hard years, so I can't really blame it for giving up. Thanks for the good camera work!

I bought the ExMark 30 Commercial the first year of it's release and put on an hour meter. The mower was so fast and strong when new but slow and slippery ever since. I've had to replace a transmission after about every 110 hours of use. The first one or two were covered under warranty. The first trans was the best and every trans since has slipped much more and tightening didn't help as it was as tight as possible. They said they made improvements but all the trans have slipped more. The part number did change. I asked my dealer and he said they lightened the clutch to make it last longer but, I said like a automotive clutch, if you let it slip more, it wears faster so I call B.S. on Toro/ExMark. I tightened the cable so much to make it better it eventually snapped. I retired my mower to personal use after maybe 500 hours. Since new, I've spent at least $2000 on pulleys, spindles, bearings, transmissions, belts, cables, etc. It hasn't made a nice cut the last half of the use (250hrs+). Only the Kawasaki engine has been perfect, otherwise it's a lemon!! Avoid it at all cost! I wish I could sue! Later, I bought the Toro Hydro 21 Aerator brand new, from a different dealer. On every job after about 20mins the aerator slowed down to maybe 1mph. The dealer and rep said they didn't have a clue and because it cooled down by the time they would look at it they did not believe me. I showed a video and they said, huh, we don't know. Fluids were all new and full, and I used Premium Ethanol-free. I fought it for a while and sold it.

timewaster is right! My friend owns one and its the most underpowered boat anchor i've ever had the misfortune to use. If the grass is high enough to be worth cutting, it bogs down unless you leave the chute open and if the self propel works that makes it struggle also. it cant mulch it and doesn't bag worth a crap either leaving an ugly cut topped with clippings. Great video as usual.

Taryl - You reversed the orientation of the axle support bearing bracket when reassembling with the new transmission. This probably won't affect operation, but it is not in the same position as Toro's factory assembled the part.

This was a very useful video. I do disagree with the method that Taryl used to re-attached the belt to the transmission. I put the belt on the transmission & motor pulleys first. Then I took a heavy duty zip tie and created a loop by inserting the end of the zip tie to the catch. I then hooked the zip tie loop around the bottom of the spring. I then put my hand through the zip tie loop and stretched the spring until I could get the spring loop to the hole on the transmission housing. Once the spring was attached, I cut the zip tie and removed it. I didn't have to perform the cross hand method to reattached the transmission belt.

Great "cinematic" opening! Another excellent, funny, instructional video. This episode does need an epilogue however. I've seen several videos showing the Timewaster tranny replacement, none come close to your excellent version, but they all have the same thing in common. No one ever opens up the tranny to see what failed. Maybe in a future video you can open one up for all to see. And that will be your supper!
