- In "Ride Ronnie Ride", local scammer Ronnie is at it again! Him and a disgruntled customer of his have a slow-speed chase on riding mowers before redemption occurs. After the intro and before the ending, Taryl goes over how to replace a variable speed pulley on a new John Deere D105 riding mower with a plastic transmission! He'll show you what it looks like and goes over the common problems this transmission has.

You prolly dont give a damn but does someone know of a tool to get back into an instagram account?
I was dumb lost the password. I appreciate any help you can offer me!
@Frederick Shawn instablaster ;)
@Iker Kaison I really appreciate your reply. I got to the site through google and im trying it out now.
Takes quite some time so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
@Iker Kaison it did the trick and I finally got access to my account again. Im so happy!
Thank you so much you really help me out!
@Frederick Shawn you are welcome xD
Dear Taryl, my name is Suzann and I am almost 60. Because of your video, I was able to drop the transmission (D105), replace the pulley and put it back together. My husband was sure something was wrong, but he is out right now, mowing our lawn. I would never have even considered doing anything like this. Thank you for saving us so much money on time and repairs. You are awesome!
Taryl Fixes All....You Rock... I replaced the 2 sets of pulleys above the transmission in my D105 today. This is the second time it's been replaced. 1st time under warranty from John Deere back in 2018 (99 hrs). This time they would not touch it.....so I did it with the help of your video (198 hrs). It took me sometime to get the parts, dropped the tranny, installed the parts and it runs like new. Problems: a) the CVT pulley screw was half off and the compression pulley was warped b) I noticed a crack in the bracket that holds the second pulley assembly that shares the belt from the CVT pulley. In all I spent about a day and $270 in parts from John Deere. Sure beats a new tractor (if you can find one) for now until it breaks again. Thanks Again !!!
The screw/spring/washer is completely doable without removing transmission. Compress spring with vice grip, wrap cable ties around it, then insert new washer and spring (if lost) and screw on top.. This converts hours to minutes. GT who makes the tranny says they test these out for many hours. couple of failure points is the one here described, and grass debris getting stuck at the top of the tranny where the shift (forward/reverse) engages. blow the top of the transmission with a wet dry vac or compressed air hose and it will prevent damage if you discover its hard to shift into forward or reverse. Do NOT force it, then you break the plastic. GT asked Deere to put a grass guard over the shift mechanism to prevent this, and Deere refused. Like any CVT, no pulling wagons, attachments, etc will strain the tranny. also, its filled with grease not fluid, and the axle seals are not removable like the other transmissions GT makes. It's a cheap lawn tractor which is designed for 1/4 -1/2 acre with no slopes, inclines. If you have greater needs, this is NOT the tractor for you. Everything is plastic now, so unless you want to drop 3k on mower, this is fine for once a week mowing. good maintenance, and careful attention to some additional things (deck spindles with zerk fittings do not work, since the bearings are sealed-pumping in grease does nothing, so plan to replace).
Good points .. it would seem the sacrificial point is the spring washer.. much like shear pins on a snow blower.. engineered to take the stress off of trans internals. IMO.. Operator abuse and lack of proper cleaning maintainence would be the main reasons for failure.
this is a great idea also I believe I will try this before I go to lifting the frame off the body and dropping the tranny
Great idea! I will try that. At least we also know how to get tranny out the right way if needed. Thanks for your input!!
He didn’t just change the spring he changed the whole thing
@@anthonyr5869 The "whole thing" can be done without dropping the trans, keep an open mind.
Thank you, Taryl! We just had to replace the variable speed pulley on our John Deere (D105). Your tutorial is awesome, memorable, & we could not have done it without you!
Thanks for this -- my 5-yr-old D105 was my first riding mower purchase and I didn't know any better... now I can at least keep it going a little longer and save up for something better-built next season!
These companies are ripping us off!
"How To Replace A Variable Speed Pulley On A John Deere Plastic Transmission (D105)" is extremely informative. I accidentally broke the screw in the pulley shaft and eventually was able to remove and re-tap for the next size. I have a D105 that is older than Sept, 2013 and so the MIA12482 - CVT tranny pulley & belt kit had a belt that was much wider than the original belt that they put on in 2013 during initial build up of the mower. In the kit instructions John D. states that you have to purchase the kit for the other CVT pulley and I found that this is not true. My mower runs a lot faster, but works well. Thanks again Tayrl for the well put together video!!!
Thanks for the video!!! 79 hours on mine and replaced this today while watching your video. Took 8 hours and stopped for Sunday dinner for a while. Changed my blades too since I was "doing".
Hi Taryl, thanks for the entertaining videos. I have a John Deere RX95, 1988 model, still running after 34 years. After each use, I use a gas powered blower to blowout everywhere, including the engine area, transmission area, the deck top etc, I think this helps keep the mechanisms clean/free to move.
Thank you so much for this very clear, concise (and comical) how-to!! You saved me hundreds of $$ no doubt. This gal was able to replace the pulley for $17 with the help of my 79 year old father. No more JDs after this. God bless you, sir!
The old simple MTD is all I need and can afford to keep it going 😊
Thanks, another mower that makes me feel better about my 1993 MTD Lawn General.
Great video!! Thanks for sharin' ur knowledge! Plastic transmission?!?! They must have no shame! Tragic!
Bruce L. Just the housing not the full transmission
Some plastics are said to be stronger than steel. It would suprise me if that were true. If it were true, wouldnt that make it more expensive? Im unsure, mabye it is better. Most LM trans are aluminum. I thought that was cheap? Im old school, i like the cast iron stuff that lasts forever.
@@finncampeau4922 still... no servicable parts?!? Garbage
Bruce L. I know!!! It’s awful.
Bruce L. Just like a modern car.
Thanks Tayrl, thanks to your instruction completed this job in no time. Mower was slow to engage in both forward and reverse.
Found that the hexagonal shaft had spun to where points were on the flats got stuck in position and didn’t allow vertical movement of the variable speed pulley.
Big fan first time caller lol. Just wanted to say thanks. I have the v tech briggs rider and thanks to your sump pump gasket video i am able to mow again. Thank you kind sir and sirs!!!!!!
Thank you, Taryl!!!! Just got out from under my D105 "JUNK", troubleshooting whilst watching your video. It was a HUGE help to me!! My top washer is still good so then I hear you say the hexing on the plastic can strip so I am guessing at this moment maybe that's it. Then I notice the spring is broken! So, I see we can't get buy the spring, so I'll get that kit you mentioned. Anyway thanks again! I'll use your video to guide me! And thanks for the good humor. It will help those of us with high blood pressure laugh a little and live another day!! Ciao! God Bless!!
That thin cap wearing and popping off is very common. I put a thick washer on top with a little longer bolt.
That sounds like a good mod!
Brilliant
Thats an excellent idea!! Keep it from happening again. It must be a fairly common problem with that model. Thicker washer longer bolt, instead of screw, heavy duty, awsome!
Maybe replace the screw with a flange head also. And blue locktite.
any idea what size the screw is mine went missing
Great video, favorite part @ 22:30 "It's a bolt its not the space shuttle" lol... Love it
Thank you Taryl, for this great video. You saved me 2 grand. I was about to junk my D105 and buy a new mower. Replaced the pulley and now my 5 year old John Deere runs like new again.
I had a Murray zero turn a few weeks ago that had a broken plastic fan on one of the hydrostats. As its owned by mtd, looking up parts, the fan and the driven pulley is only available as part of the hydrostat assembly, not separately. And it only retails for....$1,300!. And there's 2, the tractor only sold for $2,200 new in 2012, so it's obvious they don't want you fixing it. Anyway, by comparing and measuring the shaft of the hydrostat, I was able to source a new fan from a different make of mower and get it fixed. I've noticed a lot of Matt's lines have lots of non serviceable parts. Many of their cheap trimmers only list complete carbs, no overhaul kits are listed. No one cares about making a product that lasts, they want the consumer to throw away and buy new.
A little sanity on Sunday morning. Thanks Taryl.
from the comments below it looks like this pulley has to be replaced at 5 years because mine is 5 years old and needs replacing. thanks to taryl and his videos i have been able to fix my own mowers and save a lot of money. about to tackle this variable speed pulley. couldn"t do it without you Taryl
Imma take the John Deere D105 off my Christmas wish list. Whatta POS!
Don't buy the"D"series,"L"series,"LA"series,or"E"series.
ONLY buy the"X"series, these are NOT big-box store tractors, these are Deeres best premium line machines.
@@4gauge10 What about a LT180?
@@TheWolverine-rm2kr I started with the little"LT"back in 1996,I bought it brand new,I ordered a brand new LT-166 which was Deeres top machine.
I sold it for two reasons, the transmissions are cast aluminum yes,but you CANNOT change the transmission fluid in these at all, they are SEALED and when the oil finally wears out,it destroys the transmission, then you get to spend about $600.00 for a brand new one.
The SECOND issue with"LT"series is that it runs on a very thin belt,it's only 1/2"in.(half-inch)wide and it not only runs the P.T.O.(Power Take Off),but the belt also runs the blades on the deck too,it's a genuine John Deere YES,but built a bit too light and that's why I sold it.
I'd recommend the next step up if your looking for a low maintenance lawn tractor from Deere, the"LX"series is where it's at,I still have mine after 20 years later and it still has the transmission drive belt on it too.I had to change the P.T.O.deck belt twice in 20 years.
The transmission on the"LX"series Deeres are user serviceable, you can drain them and refill them easily.I use Amsoils 5W-30 transmission/hydro oil in mine and change it every 2 years.
@@4gauge10 I was stupid enough to buy a John Deere D170 (26hp) tractor form Lowes.... second transmission (Tuff Torque K46 TRUE P.O.S.) JOHN DEERE SHOULD BE FORCED TO INSTALL THE K66 THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN INSTALLED FROM THE START. They knew from the start that the K46 was JUNK, but preyed upon the people that THOUGHT the John Deere name was above being below a Chinese knockoff... John Deere no longer exists !
@@4gauge10 Mine is a 2005 with 633 hours has a deck engagement lever no pto and the deck belt actually looks pretty thick
Not always looking to spend time watching through the theatrics, but there's great content in these videos. Thanks guys.
Excellent video Taryl,Junior and crew as always.
I can't believe John Deere would build a POS like that, the customer should place a consumer complaint on that D105 and any other"D"model that uses a plastic transmission.
But equally as important, the customer has to be smart enough with his or her dollar not to buy such things in the first place and to ask the right questions before purchasing something like this in the first place.
The customer should inspect the equipment while it's on the showroom floor and ask questions like:..."is the transmission user serviceable?,is the transmission plastic or cast aluminum?"(as in transmission oil and filter changes)
If the customer abandoned products like this from the start John Deere will no longer be able to produce and or build such crap, the only reason why a plastic transmission exist in the first place is because the consumer isn't educated enough to understand what they're really getting into, if they would fully understand what they are getting into this product will cease to exist.
The average guy learns this stuff after the fact THANK YOU TERRIL. Do you think the salesman is going to tell the down sides of what he is trying to peddle ? Example Randy.
@@floydalbright1214 If he's honest, yes,I've known many honest sales people in my life that actually will give customers good purchasing advise.
I always thought John Deere was good heavy duty stuff. Thats why they cost more. Mabye not so true anymore. At least in the lawn mower dept. revved up yooper
@@waynegouin939 ✋ WAIT...You have to understand that there's TWO John Deere 🚜 🚜 tractors, this tractor in this video is a competitor to the MTD and Husky brand.(big-📦 box store)
These models are the "L"series,"LA"series,"E"series and"D"series tractors.
Now,John Deeres premium line of tractors with the heavy duty transmissions(cast aluminum with full pressure oil filters),frames, spindles, power steering and hydraulic lift and hydraulic angling, are the"X"-series tractors.
These tractors cost alot more money too,the D-105 in this video is roughly about a $1,000.00 machine,a X-324 for example will set you back nearly $4,000.00,if you want power steering and hydraulic lift, this is Deeres top-of-the-line lawn tractor, the X-360 and these will set you back nearly $6,000.00,both the X-324 and X-360 have cruise control too.
100% agreed with you. I bought D105 because its label JD. I didn't know the transmission make by plastic. Heck! It paint in black who even think the transmission make by plastic. As the consumer we attack to the name recognition JD. Too bad JD name no longer stood up to their expectation.
I know that you have tried this. But, I remove the deck and jack up the front end to gain access. The other trick that I use is to use zip ties to compress the spring when installing.
The intro is CLASSIC! I appreciate the music and the hits! Well done!
Plastic is disgraceful in an application like this. Especially coming from John Deere where one would "expect" to be of a higher quality due to their higher pricing schedule! They say you get what you pay for....not really!
Well it’s not a garden tractor. Just a ride on mower.
@@lawnmowerdude Same thing I thought? A garden tractor is not the same thing as a tractor.
Blaine Bugaski
Riding Mower ... Is just what this thing is . It's cheap, cuts grass and you sit on it . That's it. HomeDepot .
A yard tractor or Garden Tractor is "suppose" to be beefier . Beefier Tires and Rear axle for a Tiller , Tranny is fan cooled, Better quality higher hp engine and front end as well for a snowblower . Not sold at Home Depot .
@@pushpushlambert8079 I mean some of these Honda's and John Deere's have water cooled engines and fans on top of their trans-axles as well. Doesn't mean they are any less disposable than the cheepies.
I still believe the terms garden tractor and riding mower are interchangeable! Beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder...
Not really, had a rough old deere given to me. I used it a couple years and parked it in favor of a cheaper option. Ran into a couple issues.. Tires and deck bearings were shot. Now the cheaper option is failing and I'm patching up the deere. $20 in tubes, probably 50ish on the deck bearings and misc hardware. Also fixed a couple minor issues like brakes and hydro release. Thinking 10 on the pads and another 10ish on a starter button and I'm in good shape though I did weld a few spots on the deck paint the rusted areas. Also put an old but decent seat on it. It's made to last to.. Kawasaki engine and over built. Nothing like these throw aways. I've not figured it up but that ain't much. The cheaper option was a craftsman ii mowed and runs good paid 75 for it and put a battery on it. I did though end up rebuiing the steering box on it. Terrible design, plastic gear on a metal gear. Getting loose again already lol. Trans is popping on occasion now.. Anyway sometimes cheap works out to be a good deal on these things but you're gonna get your hands dirty doing it. Wouldn't have a new one with as much plastic as metal.
Sunday morning + Taryl Fixes All new video = A perfect day 😂
You gotta love the "Road Warrior" rolling battle......awesome job gentlemen
Steamy pile of green plastic is right.
Thank you so much! This video was incredibly helpful. Your step by step instructions helped me greatly with my John Deere E100. Couldn’t believe how much debris was packed into the trans housing.
"D" is for disposable in the model number. Is 105 the number of expected hours of use before disposal?
engineer2001 that cracked me up man holy shit.
I really hope that’s a joke
@@puddyslayer4458 He's not wrong. Had mine for 6 years. Less than 100 hours on mine and have been needing to replace this variable speed pulley/belt for the last 3 or 4. Accelerator pedal doesn't return all the way. Plastic hinges on the hood pivot broke 3 years ago. Plastics holding the headlights broke so they're gone. About the only thing going for it is the motor. It keeps running.
But hey it's got that fancy green and yellow paint! Oh BTW the hood is easy to scratch plastic with molded in color WTF..
LOL
John Deere will start painting those plastic transmissions silver. To look even stronger lmao
They need all the help they can get,,,plastic,,,,the only reason they get away with it is because people still buy em,,,,if they stopped selling it be changed in no time,,,
A general buyer is dumb. They don't know to look to see if it has a plastic tranny or plastic carb.
@@ryanstevens1855 all the general buyer sees is that john deere name
This is why people go to cub cadet the gas tank isn't even on the back with that and the transmission is still aluminum
I'm shocked JD hasn't gone to plastic decks yet for more cost savings. Whoops one of their engineers is reading this right now. Pitching this to his supervisor Monday. Lol
That lawnmower chase scene was epic 😂. Poor Ronnie, he doesn’t know when to quit.
I used to work at a rideon factory. All those major components were installed while the machine was upside down.
Did this myself 2 years ago with 100 hours on the meter. I added another washer under the screw head (19:19) and some gorilla glue to help spread the load/wear over a bigger area so it wouldn't pop off/wear out so soon.
My good man even if you don't like this model tractor your video was totally entertaining yet very helpful. I followed you from start to finish and now my mower drives like brand new. This may not be the best model mower but mine is still running strong. Thank you for all your time making these videos you are awesome sir.
Wow didn't think johndeere dealers sold the same junk ones as the box stores. Sucks even riding mowers have become more disposable.
They normal don't because they will tell you there junk ,,but that how people buy stuff by price !!
@Homer Simpson Although they look similar, the "X" series are much better in every way. Much heavier frames, bearings instead of plastic bushings, better engines, better transaxles, (K46, K58,K72) as you go up the series. Better warranty. More expensive but worth the money in the long term.
When ever you go buy a tractor make sure it's a metal transmission not a plastic one I have some Craftsmans BY AYP not newer MTD Craftsmans..... My old Craftsmans by ayp and weed eaters and Husqvarnas work good for me just check the transmission to see if it's crap or good.... Btw love your videos
I have a Craftsman 2020 T100 the transmission is Aluminum The Craftsman brand is now owned by Stanley tool. Stanley owns a 20% stake in MTD and my tractor was built by MTD I had an old 12HP Craftsman in the late 1980s the mechanics seem very similar, except the new one has the OHV Powerbuilt Briggs which seems much smoother than the old flat head motor..
I know you're following john deere's recommended repair procedure, but I still think blue locktite would be better than using crazy glue, to me, that's just "crazy" lol
Great video. Thanks for sharing. I had to replace the whole transaxle, but was able to do it with ease after watching this video. You made this repair stress free for me so thanks.
Quirky presentation with excellent, well thought out details. I just finished following your steps for this exact fix. Waiting for the blue thread locker to set up plenty as I don't want to go through this process again. Thank you!!!!
Thank you for posting this video, I'm planning to work on one of these soon. His pulley is still together so it may be the adjustment that other videos show. Trouble with shifting and not working or pulling in forward or reverse. I can rotate the pulley and it will slowly move the mower forward. The shifting rod had come lose and I was able to get it back in place where it belongs. I probably will remove the trans if the adjustment doesn't fix the problem. I'm sure there is a build up of debris like seen in this video. Good info! Many thanks! May GOD bless you!
The M4 screw broke off in the shaft on the one I worked on so we welded in the 3/8 16 stud and used a nylok locknut and heavier washer. Now it will never come off
good job taryl i can see why he brought it to a real pro . love ronnie an them guys
Your video saved me!! Can't thank you enough for this.
Doesn't look much used either! Disposable mowers now ?
Poor Ronnie, horizontal again😆
THIS EPISODE and others like this one is WHY I ONLY use & rebuild my 10 to 30 year old Snappers, I LOVE it when folks want to scrap them where they can go buy the disposable mowers LOL
A washer between the Torx and the cap might prevent it from pooping through so easily.
Just once I would like to take a baseball bat to the engineering department meeting and ask, "Who's idea was this??" "I want you to meet my little friend." (Too much TV!)
pooping? lol
I wonder if the plastic trans also has plastic internals?! It’d be interesting to see one apart. Another schooling by Taryl & gang. Lovin my edumucation. 👌🏻😂
No. All gears are hardened steel. I know cause I had to replace one for a customer. They are 350 to 400.
Once gears go then u gotta replace it. . Hope its just the cvt belt drive part or junk it.
Thank you. Your video was very helpful. I used a stronger washer and a better screw. Parts cost were under $1.00.
Thanks for doing this video. My mower now goes twice as fast. I put the release lever upside down and had the drive belt on the outside of the bracket. 😅 I also left the wheels on it which made it a little harder.
Thanks! Your video was exactly what I needed. I watched your video and was able to repair the variable speed pulley on my JD D105. Now I have to try it out!
Love taryls reaction to the trans when it's out haha know the exact feeling
Yeppers you are! I really like that wrap around to protect the sides!
This is a sad testimony for a product that used to stand for quality. John Deere is what may considered the top of the line. I think they should feel ashamed to market a product that's engineered so poorly and uses such a cheaply made transmission. I'm glad you did this video Taryl it may help someone who's think of buying one of these lawn mowers. I wouldn't even consider it. Thanks
Michael von Schlederer this lawn mower is the cheapest deere you can get. If you want the good one pay a little more and have it for 50 years. The problem with people today is that they will buy the cheapest thing on the market and expect it to be top of the line quality
john smith
Hello John. I have no doubt that this is an entry level mower. However when a manufacturer puts their name on it they have own it. The mower that Ronnie is driving is a Saber. Made by John Deere but not a true John Deere. That’s the way to go about things if you don’t want to devalue a name like John Deere. If I were in charge this mower would be a Saber the distant cousin twice removed from the Deere family.
Wow a plastic transaxle..... What a moron of an idea, I can't believe some of the things people get paid to think up that is so blame useless. Love watching yer vids Tarly and friends! You guys provide so much stress relief thank you. I'm a diesel mechanic btw.
Excellent video bro. You have the best diy video's that I have seen yet. Seriously! Just about all the other videos have a speach or volume problem. You also do everything with just comen sins step's and description of what to do and what's next. Awesome and thank you for taking the time to do it right.
The best on TH-cam.
this channel is the best, we get the straight up truth on quality on things like this POS.
Thanks to you I just fixed my crappy tractor. Thank you sooooo much.
This video is a testament as to why you should maintain your old tractor. They become junkier each year.

Taryl Is a CVT trans all metal or the tl 200 Hydro trans the better buy for these entry level riding mowers?
Deere actualy had a huge recall on these mowers for that transaxle. If you have one, check with your dealer as if yours is recalled, they replace the entire transaxe.
With another plastic POS.
Thank you so much for this! I just did this yesterday and was straight-forward. Off topic question. Do you know if on a D105 can the axle seals be changed or is it "sealed" and am I just screwed? It is leaking out of the axle.
You can buy the seal for about 3 dollars some thing. As matter of fact I just saw the other video with a female changed the transmission seals on those plastic transmission.
Gotta love those high speed lawn tractor chases lol. Great video as always :-)
Could you switch the plastic trans for a tuff torque transmission and how hard would it be to convert
WOW, so glad I kept walking past these at Lowes and went with a Cub XT-2 , I know the Cub is not the best in the world, but dang it's sure better than one of these for sure!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Real Deal. Your Cub may not be the best ever but it beats a Deere. My Cub XT-1 50'' deck kicks butt.
Yeah, I really do like mine too, only thing I would have done different, wish I would have gone with the fab deck instead of the stamped deck but other than that, it does kick butt....
@@RD-ix1tq I have the fab deck. Nothing sticks to it. Clean as a whistle.
MTD bought out Cub Cadet.... Sorry, the first thing MTD dies us cheapen the manufacturing process. They bought out Bolens, and quite a few more. They were famous for putting plastic wheel bushings and removing grease zerts on the wheels to keep bearings lubed.... And they'll do it to Cub Cadet... Good luck with yours.😣

What a piece-o-junk! I'll stick to my 1978 John Deere 210! It does everything I ask and begs for more! Great video guys! Keep them coming!
What kind of pliers are those?! The ones you held the shaft with when you took the screw out of the shaft?
Oh you can fix I had one dry out and would not work well grease dried out internally so I found a good spot to drill a hole on it and put a grease zerk in the case and then pumped grease into it freed it right up worked well for 5 or 6 years more. Quick tip of the day.
Wow. I just bought a d105 after my old craftsmavarna blew up on me, got a great deal on it because it needed a new camshaft because the decompression broke off, thought about keeping it but now I'm convinced I better sell it while it's functional.
Taryl, my E100's shifter is frozen stuck. How do you decide if the internals of the transmission are good or not once it's removed? Is the main shaft supposed to rotate smoothly? Thanks for your one-of-a kind video.

Question for you d105 how do you remove the control leaver the one where the throttle bar attaches too? Everything is plastic and keep breaking
I saw a video where you have to adjust the drink holder to make it shift better.
I just got one of these kits but was wondering why the belt looks so loose on this thing? I hope it does its thing when im done..
Is there a trans that you can convert it too ... Like an older model
THANK YOU TARYL!!! For showing me what mower not to buy. Plastic? Junk? Whatever. Its all about $$ plastics cheaper, yes i mean cheaper in more ways than one! revved up yooper
Taryl I have one of these RS800 Tranny that stops moving/driving after about 10-20 minutes. should I or can I replace it with another aluminum transmission? What transmission would match the closest to this one? I have Craftsman t3000. Thanks
My favorite Taryl Character is Mr. Heat Gun!!! He reminds me of Mr. Moose on the old Capt. Kangaroo show.
Thank you so much for this video. My mower is running today thanks to you.
Thank you so much for this video! This helped me and my buddy fix this problem on my tractor and it works now! Really appreciate the information! 👍
Thanks for the How-To. Ended up buying the Pulley Kit (MIA12482) and found out I didn't really need it. I found two other issues. 1) I had so much dust, dirt, and grass clippings on top of the transmission it was impeding the full range of motion of the variator pulley. 2) The screws holding down the variator pulley had worked their way loose. I still replaced all parts that came in the kit and now it's running like it were new.
Any tips or clues as to what is keeping the accelerator from fully returning? I have to lift it up with my foot in order to change from forward, neutral, and reverse?
I'm about to install my third Variable Speed Pulley on my D-105. First 3 years I didn't have any trouble. I've got 210 hours on it now and the last 4 month's was when I started having Pulley problem's. The hex on the lower half start's rounding off and the pulley slip's. Any idea's what is going on? If I were to put a little lubricant on the hex do you think that would help. The last time I replaced it I also installed a new inversion kit.
Mine a D105-is about 8 years old now 160hrs, and its starting to nickle and dime me as well. I maintain, run ethanol free gas with sta-bil, run the gas out end of season, change oil/filter yearly with synthetic, new filters spark plug, and greased everything, have a pretty flat 0.8 acre of yard with a small ditch and get blades sharpened/ect. So far traction Drive belt broke, new deck belt, the pulley also fell off? so all new pulleys, somehow the engine governor arm came loose (spring jumped ship as well) and was running wide open-watched taryls video on how to adjust the governor its still not 100% i ordered a tach to adjust this as the governor arm looks bent?, deck is rusted (keep in garage when not mowing) had to sand, primer, re-paint it, and now the plastic trans broke so here I am with everyone else that bought this. I expect with any yard equipment to have to fix stuff but come on, plastic parts on the trans? sucks. When that hex pulley (in the video) thing rounded off, I replaced all of those parts on the trans like taryl did as well as that trans belt with the teeth on it. Did you make sure the pulley is all the way seated on the bottom washer and the spring is tightened ok? I also put a washer on where the hex nut attaches so it doesn't pull though as that round metal piece on top of the spring is thin crappy metal. On the new part I put a bit of grease in/on the the hex, theory was that when it moves up and down due to the variator it may get hot and wear the plastic out then it starts rounding out. That pulley with the spring that's on top of the trans should all be metal, plastic is crap application for this part, too much torque is put on that plastic hex area and it just strips off over time. If i knew a machine shop, I would see if they could copy and machine that plastic trans pulley part out of steel or aluminum. I'm going to try to get this season out of it and either start swapping better parts in as they break like a K58/K62/K66 trans or just get a new mower as its too hot here in NC to push mow this place (did this when the trans broke) when its 100 degrees out.
Hey Taryl and Co. Make a video on the difference between a "lawn tractor" "lawn mower" "garden tractor" "compact tractor" etc!
This Green glob you worked on is clearly a lawn mower, but those terms seem confusing as all get out!
A lawn tractor is what you get when you take your new/used riding mower home and, crap, the deck is total junk! "Oh, they don't make those blades anymore."???
Great episode Taryl, hilarious as always! They just keep manufacturing lawn equipment cheaper and cheaper these days, plastic transmission on a lawn tractor, what a joke. I'd stay clear of any tractor with a cheap plastic garbage transmission that's not serviceable, it will cost you big money if it fails and needs replaced!
Good video Taryl. I've done this job on a poulan pro, witch is basically a Husqvarna. I was wondering If a guy could replace this plastic general dynamics tranny with an aluminum Tuff Torq ?
Taryl, how long have plastic transmissions been made ?? Thanks
So, will this repair also fix it if the mower is not moving in reverse and moving slow?
Very informative! I'm in the market for a riding mower, I looked at the John Deeres, I'm not buying anything wit a plastic transaxle in it.
