Just had my tensioner pulley self destruct at 158 hours or three years of use (do have an hour meter on the TimeMaster), what a great video you produced. Was able to get the Exmark version of the idler and tensioner pulleys and also replaced all of the belts (tooth, drive and power to the toothed belt). I did have to remove the toothed belt pulley using an impact wrench as it would not budge with a normal wrench/ratchet. I guess I am good now for quite a few years more. Luckily the blades were not destroyed when the tensioner pulley bit the dust. Thanks so much Taryl! 5 STARS to you amigo!

Just replaced those pulleys and I went with the upgraded kit with the steel pulleys. Today the kit cost $150 but it was still well worth the money. Thank you for posting this video. Love the channel.

@@harryharry3193 Update: Exactly 1 week later, another one my new TimeWasters had the back idler pulley explode from the plastic bearing in the middle. So shady of Toro to have plastic bearings in the pulley. It's like giving someone a trashbag for a parachute. They know they will quickly crack from heat, exploding to pieces! Of course the blades immediately start smashing each other and also become useless. So you need a new set of twin 15 blades too. There should be a Recall on these Toro 30 Idler Pullies.

No disrespect cuz you da man Taryl. The spring plate behind the tension bolt is actually meant to be used as a gap measurement for the belt tension. Although I never used a gap measurement to adjust them, I just left a small gap between the plate and frame ( again a business card ).

Those plugs are called knockout plugs. They are used to close off unused openings in electrical panels where a wire has been removed or moved to a different location on the box. You can get them from 1/2” up to like 2”. Probably even bigger. Look in the electrical department of your favorite local hardware store. Those look like the 3/4” size, but I’d take the pulley with me to be sure to get the right size.

When adjusting the belt adjuster screw at 1” 1/8 or 1/16 what happens to the plate and shoulder bolts . Wouldn’t they have play and throw off the 1” gap ? ... i busted my synchronized belt and I’m trying to figure if it was the adjuster that was at fault . I only have 6 hrs on it and I did not hit anything or have grass clogged up .. please I’ve seen multiple videos and can’t figure that one part out . I added these commercial pulleys .

I want to buy one because it looks easy to work on - you make it all look so easy, and you have a few videos on it now for the stuff I'd probably need to do. But if you have seen them enough to have more than one video where you fixed one... maybe I don't want one? :-)

Great video but unfortunately the upgraded pulley doesn't function properly over the tensioner plate using the old spacer (my TimeWaster is 2015 model). The old spacer doesn't provide enough clearance between the top of the tensioner plate and bottom of the pulley, so the pulley makes contact with the plate instead of spinning freely. I'm going to try and put an additional spacer/shim on the underside of that pulley but from other comments that may not align with everything else properly. I will give it a go but may need to send both pulleys back for the full kit, or just go back to the old pulley design - but either way looks like I'll be eating $10 in shipping to return if I can't finagle something :(

Same. Bought two of the metal pulleys as listed in the video and the one that mounts to the adjustable tensioner plate will not spin unless you shim the underside with washers. After shimming it out, the idler pulley spins, but isn't in alignment with the cogged spindle pulleys. Now I have to try and return the individual pulleys and source the kit instead.

Hey Taryl...love your how-to videos. Timemaster question: Do you know if you can replace the blade brake arm assembly on the Timemaster with the upgraded one on Turfmasters? On the Timemaster's brake arm the edge of the 1/8" thick steel that the arm itself is made of rides directly on a pivot spacer type shoulder bolt and it is kept from twisting by 2 friction washers. (lousy design). The idler pulley mounted to the brake arm constantly has pressure on it which tends to want to twist that brake arm bracket. Since that arm also vibrates CONSTANTLY during operation, it wears a groove into the pivot spacer (at an angle because of the twisting forces). This puts the entire brake arm & idler pulley out of alignment and can cause excessive wear on the blade drive belt. I went through belts too quickly until I diagnosed the problem. There was a deep angled groove in that spacer pivot.
The commercial Turfmaster's brake arm setup should help eliminate this problem but I don't know if the parts will transfer over. I'm asking because I took your advice on the upgraded tension pulley & bracket kit (another Turfmaster part) for the cogged blade belt and it worked perfectly.

Lastly, if them pulleys are stamped: the dies are sprinkled with powdered LEAD, to reduce friction, wear, and from sticking. Just saying.
