"that jumped off of push rod"? I had one and adjusted valves, 2nd time they ran the machine it slung the rod and almost got someone hurt standing near it! A hole the size of a cross cut 2x4!
Did I do something wrong? Set valve lash according to Honda!

My Dad mowed the yard up until 1969 and 1970 during this period he taught me how to fix the old 3 and a half horse power Briggs and Stratton 22 inch push mower. Like hammering the shaft back straight and replacing the key after I hit something. By 1970 I was 11 years old and was given the yard mowing forever ! LOL ! Love all your vids Taryl very humorous ,entertaining and educational.

I found a perfect like new engine on a power washer and tried using it on my mower. It worked great except not only when I hit something did it get the timing all screwed up because it had the pointless lgnition, but I found the shaft to bend at the drop of a hat because it was not made as strong as lawn mower crankshaft .

Once again another great video. I'm definitely going to order those sleeves. I really could not justify buying that jig that you used. In the last 15 years I've only had one bent crankshaft and that was one my own mower. The mower was about a month and a half old when my wife did not listen and went out into the yard and tried to mow over top of their decorative rocks that made a pass to the garage. 2 weeks before she bent the shaft she took out the lawn mower blade. And two weeks later she took out the motor. Fortunately I had a good used motor on someone's mower deck that could not be saved. So I have a lawn mower with a brand new body with a 20-year old motor.
Like always I enjoyed your video.

Picked up a free mower to get it running. Cleaned carbs and changed gas and oil and it fired up but vibrated violently. I learned in this vid how to check the crank and how to straighten it. I banged so hard with the sledge that it tore out the motor mounts. Gave me a good reason to buy a welder and I welded new steel to the deck and made new solid mounts. After a little spray paint I now have a pretty sweet mower! You guys rock!

    • @newsnowriversidesgtrock
      @newsnowriversidesgtrock 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

In truth the device does not "straighten cranks", is straightens the output shaft of the engine.
Yes the output shaft is physically connected as an extension of the crankshaft, however, the output shaft is an extension listed separately on most parts breakdown lists.
Most engines, with the exception of the small engine such as we are discussing, do not have an output shaft, but rather usually have an output flange of some type.

I hit something with my push (self propelled) mower and threw out the timing. Like you said it would yank the starter rope out of my hand when I tried to start it ! Also when it kicked back it would spin the bolt loose that holds the blade on and the blade would fall off! I removed the flywheel like you did ( before I saw this video) and was hoping nobody saw me and yell at me for not getting a puller. Lol. I was pleased that you have been doing it that way for years with no issues. When I started watching your videos, I said to myself who is this crazy guy?! But I couldn’t stop watching! Lol. My dad taught me and my brothers how to straighten a crankshaft with a hammer like that 40 YEARS ago, and how to get the flywheel off that way too. SOME PEOPLE CRINGE ON THAT,BUT LIKE A LOT OF THINGS I'VE SEEN YOU DO I'VE DONE AS WELL SINCE I WAS AROUND 12 YEARS OLD! AS YOU STATE A LOT OF TIMES,, IT'S NOT THE SPACE SHUTTLE!! things on small engines are not that CRITICAL!! I'm glad you're doing these videos! MAINLY TO SHOW ALL THOSE BY THE BOOK "PROFESSIONALS" that you DON'T NECESSARILY HAVE TO HAVE TONS OF MONEY INVESTED IN ALL THOSE FANCY TOOLS JUST TO WORK ON THINGS!! MANY OF TIMES I'VE USED A DRILL AND A FILE TO TRUE UP A VALVE, I'VE ALSO USED THE SANDPAPER TRICK ON THE SEATS, a lot of the bolts and such DOESN'T HAVE TO BE "TORQUED" yes the head bolts, yes the rod bolts, but some of the other bolts just snugged up,does just fine!!

My sweet wife was helping with the yard work when I heard a loud clank and silence. I knew the mower was dead. The crank shaft on that twenty year old B&S was so bent the engine locked down. Well nothing to lose so I took the blade off and found the high spot and hit it about as hard as I could with a sledge hammer. I had to do it a few times but now it is going good. I still do not think the tool you have would have helped me. The bottom bolt would keep the shaft from bending inside the engine. I thought it got bent by a lick on one side so a lick on the other side should help. Thanks for your mechanic class.

Dial indicators with magnetic base are about $30 at harbor freight. It will tell you exactly how far the crank is out to .001”. Also I would mark the heigh spot so I get a feel as to how hard I have to hit it to move it a certain amount. Your method is kind of hit and miss but it is effective.

Hey, Taryl, My neighbor bent the crankshaft on his brand new Honda GVC160 lawn mower and when he started it ,it jitterbugged all over the driveway. Well, he took it in to a local repairman and for $50 he re- balanced the blade to compensate for the bent crankshaft and it runs like it did the day he brought it home! Smooth as silk! He also says that it will no longer stress the bearings but when a new blade is needed it will have to be re-balanced. Ever heard of this? It sure beats a $450 new crankshaft installation.

Good stuff Taryl thats a fancy little jig you got there. I usually just bash the shaft and grind the mushroom down after its not that bad. Iv been using a lead hammer to get the flywheels off it works great no damage but I think the softness takes away some of the shock so it takes some harder hits. Intresting about the plug holders I didnt know that. I heard having them ungrounded when you turn it over damages the coil I guess thats why they put it there.

Thanks Taryl that was a good dinner. I notice the lawn mowers in the US are front wheel drive and our ones in the UK are rear wheel drive which is better?

Rear wheel, they don't bounce if your lawn isn't flat. Makes a smoother looking cut.

My one only works if the height adjust is high the wheels slips on low.

Actually we have both type over here. Just depends on the brand and model.

Rear- cause otherwise every time you lift the front to turn you lose forward power , and the front is heavier

Instead of hitting the crankshaft with a hammer, could you use a small bottle jack under the crankshaft to push up and straighten the crankshaft? I have never straightened a crankshaft. Just wondering if the jack would keep from giving a shock on internal engine parts like a sudden whack with a hammer would.

What about if the axle is a kind of loose and not tight. It is about some 3 millemeters that are left and right. Can you fix that?

Is this really straightening the steel crank or is it "modifying" the crank bearings? I wonder....perhaps a combination of the two. Looks like that crank seal is leaking as a result of the bent crank not running true inside of the seal.

love it...subbed.....you taught me one new thing....using a air hammer to pull a pulley...just wondering why you didnt use it to pull the flywheel instead of the sledge.
